Sometimes, Force quit does not work

With some applications, when I try to stop it, the color wheel is there turning. If I try to go to the Apple logo to force quit the program, nothing happens. The program is stalled and there is nothing I can do to rectify the problem. It has happened with several version of OS X. That looks like a bug in the OS. Has anybody experienced the same problem? Thanks.

You are right. Force shutdown is not an ideal way of shutting down the computer.
Occasionally that may be the only way to get out of the jam.
Here are other ways to Force Quit.

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

  • On iphoto my stop import is not working and the force quit does not work either

please help - the stop import and force quit on iphoto both not working. thx!

This happened to me today on the iPad; I put in the password 4 or 5 times. I began to think my account had been hacked. I tried again on my iPhone and it worked first time. Then I tried again on the iPad and same thing—worked first time. Maybe just a temporary glitch in the server?

force quit will not work what do I try next

Other than the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your iMac.
Check out:  Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball/freezing & crashing and  Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball.  Not sure if you have tried everything mentioned in these articles.  If you have, and no one else can come up w/any suggestions, then it's time to lug your iMac to your local AS or an AASP.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!!!

there is panel in the upper right corner of my screen that says 'copy' preparing to duplicate to "desktop". I clicked stop three days ago and it is still trying to stop. Tried to 'force quit' does not show up in finder, looked in activity monitor but i am not sure how it is listed. I am new to the mac world.

    Force quit/Restart the Finder.
    Then for safety...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • My iPhoto has a constant spinning pinwheel. Even Forced Quit does not fix the problem. Any advice?

My iPhoto has been doing this for the past 4 days. The pinwheel never goes away. I have forced quit countless times and still it does not work. I have looked all over the internet but have yet to find a solution that makes my iPhoto usable again. Can anyone help? Thank you!
A little background: I have a feeling I started the problem as I pulled out my camera's memory stick in a rush before I had ejected it on the iPhoto program.

You tv probably has 2 seperate inputs, DVI and HDMI. You will need one these adapters if you want to connect via HDMI however on a machine as old as yours neither the  HDMI or DVI will only output video, not audio.

If you want to use the HDMI you will need:

Finally OS X has been available for well over a decade. Please look at About this Mac (click the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of the display. Then look to see what version of OS X is installed.

  • How can I shutdown my Mac since my Google Chrome is "open" and Force Quit is not working

Can someone help me shutdown my mac?
Problem: Google Chrome is not responding, and force quit from the dock, and using the apple icon seems to not work in quitting Google Chrome. Because of this, I cannot shutdown/restart my macbook pro.

    Try this:
    Command+Control+Option+Power button
If that does not work, as a last resort, hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the MacBook powers off. Wait 30 seconds before starting up again.

  • Recently bought Mac air in March 2014, but it keeps freezing and force quit is not working?

    Hi all,
I had trouble with my mid-2009 Macbook Pro during finals week (it kept shutting down by itself), so I opted out and thought it was time to upgrade. I had bought myself the Macbook air 13 inch, Version 10.9.2, processor 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 4 GB... everything was fine until on the third day, the air froze for the first time. The rainbow wheel started showing up, so I wanted to force quit (I think I had youtube running). Force quit wouldn't work when I moved my mouse over to the apple logo on the top left. I also tried holding down control+command+esc but nothing came up.. I'm quite disappointed since I literally bought this two weeks ago. From the first freeze, it has frozen 4 times and I have been force restarting it. What can I do to fix this? Will apple replace this machine?
Thanks for your help in advance!
    Jenny

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Mail won't display the viewer window, and it will not close (force quit does not show in menu bar).  Can't shut down to reboot because the open mail program prevents it.   Any advice?

Mail does not show the viewer window even when new viewer window is cliced.  I tried to close mail and reopen, but it will not close, and force quit option does not appear in window bar.   I tried to shut down the computer and reboot, but it cannot close because of open mail program it says.    Help!

Many thanks.  Once I was able to close mail, it reopened and behaved quite normally.  Thank you.  I'll remember the option quit for force quite!

  • Force quit is not working

It started when I update from lion to mountain lion. every time I want to use force quit, it doesn't come up and my mac plays the alert sound. I can still go to the apple and use force quit there. all my other keyboard shortcuts work, its just the force quit. help is appreciated

I'd just like to say I've been having these exact problems - an app will hang, I force quit it, the app disappears but stays in the Force Quit window and doesn't disappear from the dock, so it can't be relaunched and nor can I restart or shutdown unless I do a hard shut down.
It could be my imagination but it's been happening more and more since I started having major Time Machine errors with a 1TB WD MyBook Studio over Firewire 800. Had a couple of power cuts and it's odds on I caught the TM mid backup or something, so likely that kicked off the whole thing. Hangs of this nature seemed to coincide with endless TM Preparing Backup stuff, and then I had mounting problems, I/O errors, all sorts. Ended up reformatting the drive and re-TM-ing it, which worked fine for about a week, then this weekend I seemed to lose the FW800 port, but a PMU reset startup solved that (shutdown, pull all plugs including power out of the Mac for at least half an hour, then restart).
That got the FW800 back but then TM started playing up again, not backing up, preparing forever, unable to complete etc. Finally wiped the drive and started over with a SuperDuper bootable clone yesterday, but this morning started getting hanging errors on the Mac again. Read this thread, decided to dismount the drive. Ejecting officially didn't work at all so in the end I just pulled the power on the drive and LO! Everything came back to normal including two hung apps.
However, just after pulling the drive (literally as I pulled it) I got a dialogue that said "This drive is in use by an application. Try quitting applications to free up the drive" or something. This was instantly replaced by the usual "Unsafe dismount" warning.
So... seems to be either external drive or FW related?

    brookesuk,

    A Quick primer
On Macs, the Macintosh HD (or whatever you have renamed it to) icon is on the desktop, right?
So if you open this, you see a Library folder, it is also referred to as /Library
(with the "/" indicating root level, i.e. Macintosh HD)
If you go to your Home folder, it has a Library folder too. It is referred to as ~/Library. (With the "~/" indicating user level)
Now, these steps (taken from KB 25398, section B3), summarize this well:
    1. Go to ~/Library
    2. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    3. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    4. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
    5. If issue persists, go to /Library.
    6. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    7. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    8. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash
    Hope this helps,
    Generik

  • Leopard hangs - have to power off  - force quit doesn't work

On several occasions Leopard has hung - try to run activity monitor to kill problem app - I get the bouncing icon but nothing else. force quit does not work on it. Can't log off - can put to sleep, but resumes in same hung state. Once I hard power off and restart, a I get a series of beeps, not just one and a normal start - no error messages. Other programs also would not respond to force quit including parallels desktop.

    Hi,
Have had same problem here. My iMac is only a few days old, and barely anything on it before the upgrade from tiger to leopard.
Tried lauching thunderbird tonight, and the app just sat on the dock bouncing for a while, but the application never actually seemed to launch.
Tried force quit, but didn't have any effect. Also could not log-off, or shut down, as it said the application wasn't responding. This does seem very windoze-like!
