Sometimes Gnome just logs out, instead of rebooting/shutting down

I'm running Gnome with GDM. I randomly have the experience that every once in a while when I select "restart" or "shutdown" from the Gnome shutdown dialogue, it just logs out intsead and returns me to the GDM login screen. I can then shutdown or reboot successfully from the login screen. It's not really a big deal. It happens a couple times a week. I'm just curious if anyone else is experiencing this and/or can shed any light on it.

I'm having the same issue and still looking for a solution as it's a bit annoying for me. I've found a couple of threads about similiar problems on this forum (as well as on forums for other distros), but couldn't find a workaround. I've changed PolicyKit settings to allow anyone or just specific user to shutdown the system, but it didn't help. I've also tried to strace gnome-session and gdm, but couldn't find any clues.
Has anyone of you managed to find a workaround for this problem?

  • Creative Cloud desktop app logged out instead login

    Hi,
I can't login to Creative Cloud on desktop Windows 7 x64 with my email. It's saying 'you have successfully logged out' instead 'you have successfully logged in'. I use Russian OS so actualiy I translated message from Russian.
Otherwise I can without any problems login to https://creative.adobe.com/ web page.
P.S. I'm prerelease member of some projects. During last 10 days CC was autoupdated and I think that update broke login system...

  • KDE4 Cannot log out ,reboot, shut down

I using kde from svn and xorg from git. Before updating xorg all works fine. Now when I click on logout/reboot/shut down button nothing happen. What log should I attach to give more information ?

Hi there EEP1 - I have had the same problem with my Mac Mini for years and cannot solve it either. When my Mac comes awake from sleep Mail usually looks for new mail and hangs indefinitely. I try and quit or force quit and this will stay in the dock. I'm not sure whether Mail is the problem or not, but it seems to take out actions associated with file control in the Finder [saving, quitting, shutting down, force quitting etc.]. It's really frustrating and I'm sure it's not healthy to force restart each time it does this.
Did you manage to call Apple again? Or find any other soloutions? It's a tricky search term to define when looking for advice from forums!
    Many thanks, Ben

  • Help! Mid files cause "out of memory" session shut down.

When I export .mid files from Reason 7 and import them into Logic Pro 9, it give me the error message "out of memory" and shuts down the session. Help!!

I tried a number of values that were multiples of 1024 (2048, etc).
The only thing that worked seemed to be changing the number and rebooting the server machine.
Not sure what caused the initial problem though.  Saw very wierd activity in the FMS console.  Had a few hundred users connected, as I typically do for one of my events, and the chat application was repeatedly unloaded from FMS.  When it was reloaded the FMS console would show crazy large numbers in the "Clients" column - numbers like 3954.  Then it would drop to like 340.  Then shoot up again to wildly large numbers.
Is that the result of a memory problem?

  • My mac air won't start up.it is frozen right before the log on screen. It shut down fine the time before, what should I do? Does it have a safe mode like windows?

My Mac book air wont start up.it is freezing up right before the log on screen. It shut down properly. I cant figure out what could of caused this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Justin,
Are you getting to the Login screen? Or is freezing up on a blue screen? Are you still at the gray screen? Run any updates recently?
You can try Safe Boot/Mode and see if that does anything - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
The next step would be to try and verify/repair Disk Permissions, but you'll need access to another computer for DVD/CD sharing or an external DVD drive.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

As Larry mentioned I use a different DAM (digital asset management) appliclation, Media Pro 1. For other possible DAM apps visit  The DAM Forum which is for professional photographers.  There the various apps are discussed along with workflows.  If nothing else you'll get some good information on managing digital "negatives".
Media Pro lets you manage the folder organization of your photos and write metadata, keywords, titles, and other metadata directly back to the files.  No matter what app you go with have a backup plan in place to keep current backups of your source photos on separate hard drives.

  • Reboot/Shut down log

    Hey,
when I reboot or shut down Arch Linux I can see various messages.
One of them is related to my WLAN device problem which isn't properly recognized sometimes. But the message disappears to fast and I can't read it.
That's why I'm looking for some kind of dump file or log file where these messages are stored. At this moment I'm looking in /var/log but I can't
find anything that is related to my problem.
I've already used the search function. But with "reboot log" or "shut down log" I can't find related entries. Maybe I just need the name of this log...

  • Weekly Crashes, Kernel Panics, Freezes, Reboot, Shut Downs, HELP!

I've posted this problem everywhere but no one seems to care or have anything useful to say, so I'm asking you guys now.
    _My current situation:_
I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, bought in Late 2008, so it's the first generation of Unibodies.
It came with Leopard and *everything was perfect and wonderful, until I upgraded to Snow Leopard*.
Since then, approximately once or twice a week, I get various problems that involve a hard reset of the computer. This is sometimes a *complete freeze, a spontaneous reboot, a power-off without warning, or a kernel panic*. So sometimes the computer will reboot on its own, sometimes it will power off without rebooting, and sometimes it just freezes requiring me to power it off by holding the power button.
For example, the problem I just had 10 minutes ago can be described as follows:
The mouse suddenly moves a lot faster than usual, and seems to freeze from time to time. The Skype audio conversation I am having still works perfectly fine. I try to click, press exposé, but nothing reacts. The mouse reacts to movement, but moves way too fast. Then, all of a sudden, the last bit of audio from Skype keeps *looping forever*, and everything has frozen, including the mouse. Then the computer goes black and starts to reboot automatically.
This has happened many times before. Often, the computer would start to reboot (totally on its own), I would hear the startup chime, and then it would go black again, and start booting *all over again*.
Sometimes the screensaver just freezes, with random thick grey horizontal lines scanning and flickering across the screen. It won't react to anything, even the Caps Lock key won't light up when pressed.
I have noticed that these problems only seem happen when I am using the *9600M graphics card*. Not when using the 9400M. This is not for sure, as I rarely use the 9400M.
However, before you say it's a graphics card failure, let me just clarify that NONE of this happened on Leopard for a year. Absolutely nothing. Now I don't believe that by coincidence, my graphics card failed for no reason right on the day I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I have talked with a genius and all he could say that he has no idea and that there's nothing he can do. He said it could be RAM or it could be the graphics card, but that's just based on what I told him. He could take the machine for some time and run tests on it, but I can't live without my computer at the moment, it is crucial for my studies, I'd rather have it crash every 4 days than not have a computer at all for a few days.
_What I have tried so far:_
I have run the basic Apple Hardware Test, I haven't run the Extended one yet.
I used Tech Tool Pro's non-booting interface and it shows no problems.
I repaired permissions more times that the number of atoms in the universe.
I checked the hard drive for errors using Disk Utility, nothing.
I will try reinstalling Snow Leopard if the upcoming 10.6.3 update doesn't solve the problem.
    *Then I will reinstall Leopard.*
Until then, can anyone think of anything that could help? I'm looking for SOFTWARE related issues, not hardware. If my problem is hardware, I'm doomed, as I am out of warranty, and I'm NOT paying any amount of money to fix this as I've only bought this super expensive computer a year and a half ago.
So, please help me. I'm very annoyed. My 8 year old Pentium III with Windows 2000 is more stable than this.

Here are two extracts from the Console.app, both generated during the time of two separate crashes, I would like someone who knows anything about the Console messages to have a look through it and check what's similar in both of them, and maybe point to what may be the cause. I found that each time there's something about "64 bit mode enabled" and also something like "launchd[1] has started up". I don't know what these mean but all I know is that these messages were generated during at least two crashes. The way the last two crashes happened were as follows: the mouse started being over sensitive, as I moved my finger over the trackpad, the pointer moved way too fast compared to normally. I could not click anything, and the rest of the screen was frozen, except for the strange mouse pointer. The Skype conversation in the background was still working fine, except that the person reported not seeing me anymore on the webcam. My green iSight light was still on though. Then the mouse froze and in one case the system rebooted on its own, in another case I had to do it manually.
    Here are the two logs:

  • Urgent:  JavaScript runtime is out of memory; server shutting down instance

I'm getting this error with one chat application.
    According to
    http://www.adobe.com/livedocs/flashmediaserver/3.0/docs/help.html?content=09_config_status codes_1.html
..I should "Check the JavaScript runtime size for this application in the  configuration file".
By default it was set to 1024.  Any attempt to increase it causes FMS not to start again.
This problem just came out of the blue.  This same chat app has been in operation with no trouble for about 10 months.  I restart the server machine on which it resides before each new chat session.
    Any suggestions?

  • Why freezing (mini 2011) and how to get out from there without shutting down?

Still difficult to know why/what action/what behaviour, but why am I getting (at least once avery 4-5 hours of use, to be fair...), a hang/freeze (that kaleidoscope ball...) - sometimes with nothing special (it just happened as I was starting to write this message!...) ?
I hear people who are going for years (or at least they claim it) without a single freeze or crash wth their Mac (reason why I invested in one mini, and soon another one...).
Ok I would get it if I had 5 apps going on with 4GB of ram (still, depends which apps...). I get it with Photo Booth, I get it with Microsoft Office 2011 (a simple plain Word document), I get it surfing on Safari... So nothing very ''specific''.
And sometimes, it is the shut down that freezes.... I come up hours later or the day after and realize it had not completed shut down (still that rolling wheel on the white background).
I have all OS X (Lion) and other apps updates to date.
So, to which extent is it ''normal'' to get a crash (or is it a crash ? - when I cannot go further and there is no other way but to force shut down physically (Power button)? - And is there another way to get out from there on a Mac ? (Being a Windows user, my automatic reflex would be Ctrl+Alt+Del... when this works...)
    Thanks,
    Rob

Can anyone tell me how to restart my iPad that just shut down, while I was reading a book on Overdrive? I still had plenty of battery life.  I tried to reboot holding down the off button, but no response at all.

Photos that are in the cloud stay there until they are removed by a device that has the right privileges. If your iPad is logged in with the same AppleID, then doesn't it show the photos from iCloud?
You will only be on iCloud Drive if you expressly chose to upgrade.
