Sometimes when I close Firefox and then try to reopen, I get a message that "Firefox is still running" and suggests I close it (which I have already done) or restart my computer, what do I do?

I really have had a problem with Firefox responding sluggishly for the last 6 months or so. I have difficulty opening it, closing it properly, freezing up. I don't have this problem with other programs, so don't know what is going on. Also I can't use my latest version....10 of Adobe Acrobat now. Dont know if that is my computers fault or Firefox. Any help will be appreciated.

After closing down firefox I may click on a URL to go to a web site and Instead of Firefox reloading I get a window stating it is still running and I have to close it down before it will reload. Well, there is nothing to close down......how do I fix this. It happens quite often and is very frustrating.
I do not want to have to reboot my PC just to get firefox shut down.

Try holding control, alt and delete down in succession and then a dialogue box will appear with windows task manager. Once open click on the Processes Tab and look for firefox.exe. Highlight this and then click end process. It should come up with a warning but just click Yes. This should then close firefox and allow you to reopen it from your desktop without shutting down your computer. Hope this helps.

  • I will think that I have closed Firefox, I will go to open it again and I will get a message that it is still running on my system and my system must first be restarted. I am using a special Laptop desk for it. Sorry so long.

I've been on it a bunch lately, plus I tend to watch a lot of movies, back to back, streaming, from Netflix. My laptop was hacked so badly that it was taken back to factory settings and I now use Glary Utilities and CCleaner every two weeks. I use AVG as antivirus. Monthly I run Glary, CCleaner, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Disk Cleanup and Dfrag.
I haven't given my computer a break to breathe. I've been updating my information, like I said already, on all those websites, which is like neverending.
I do have to use Internet Explorer for some things, but Firefox has actually been staying open on my system a lot more than Internet Explorer has been crashing. And I swear, there are no indicators to me, other than opening up Task Manager, I suppose, and I haven't done that, that Firefox is staying open. It truly is looking totally closed. Yet my laptop is giving me this weird message stating that it isn't, so I click Restart, and open it again, then go on my merry way with my work in Firefox.
I have no idea how to tell if my plug-ins are old or not cooperating with my current, updated version of Firefox.
Can somebody dummy their answer down, please? I will give you more details if you ask for them. I don't know what other details to give. I did read through the other options, and this is what fit me the best, I thought. Who knows. Thanks, Tigerstripe

The proper way to close Firefox is through the File menu "Exit" or the equivalent with the Firefox button.

Firefox already running, to properly shutdown Firefox when closing the last window use File → Exit/Quit (or Firefox button → Exit). Closing Firefox with the [X] in the upper right corner closes the window ("Ctrl+W") but that does not necessarily close Firefox if it has subtasks running. If you want to close and reopen Firefox use the "Restart" within Add-ons if you made a change requiring a restart, or install "[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/ Restartless Restart]" ("Ctrl+Alt+R") which will allow you to take Firefox down and restart without having to check the Windows Task Manager to see if Firefox first actually ended. • I close out Firefox then when I try to reopen it, I get a message that it is still running. I've had so many bugs with Firefox that I'm removing it and going back to IE.

The problems I've had with Firefox are numerous. It keeps running in the background and won't reopen. I have to go to the task manager and close it manually. Now, it won't load my iGoogle homepage. I was loading fine, earlier but now won't. My other browsers work fine. There are just too many bugs here.

  • When I close Firefox by clicking on X in the upper right corner of Vista, Firebox doesn't close and the next time I click on FireFox I get a message that FF is still running but not responding. I use alt, ctlr, delete to use Task Manager to close FF. Why?

The details are in the question. Don't know what else to add.

  • Firefox won't close. When I shut it down, the window closes, but I can't reopen it. I get a message that it is still running. When I shut down my PC, I get a message that Windows can't shut down Firefox.

The question pretty much details my problem. I have to force a shutdown of Firefox and reboot to be able to browse again.

  • Iphoto shuts down immediately upon opening.  It goes to the last picture that I was viewing and then errors out.  I get the message that "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" and then get to Ignore, Report, or Reopen.  Nothing has been successful.

What can I do to correct the problem with iPhoto closing immediately without loosing my photos?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • I keep getting the message, "Windows cannot find 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get it when I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon.

I've just installed Firefox on my laptop and keep getting the message, "Windows cannot find 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I get this message whenever I either try to open it from the Start menu or from the desktop icon. I've never gotten it to work and even uninstalled it and then redownloaded it and still cannot get it to open. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Are you installing from the official site? http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
If you use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to check that path, is the Mozilla Firefox folder there? That is the normal installation location, but I think it's worth checking.
If the folder isn't there or firefox.exe is not in it, I wonder whether some other software might be interfering. You might want to run some supplemental security scans. These two tools are highly regarded:

  • When I use a GSI external antenna for WiFi I first get a message that "Firefox is already running but not responding etc", and then Firefox crashes. Can anyone help please?

Because of weak WiFi signal I need to use an external antenna (GSI USB wireless WIFI long range network adapter). My computer can see the signal clearly and shows that I am connected to the right network. But when I try to launch Firefox I get a message that "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." When I click "OK" Firefox tries to load websites but gives up and reports "Problem Loading". It looks like Firefox is having trouble "seeing" the signal from the external antenna. What do I need to do please?

Try Ubuntu support, I don't think your problem is with Firefox - it will use the connection that the Operating System "makes". I'm a real noob with Ubuntu myself, and don't think I can help you figure out the problem.

When I try to sync I get a message that says "waiting for items the sync" then it just stays there and runs for as long as I keep it hooked up. Any ideas?

I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!
