Somewhat Blurry Slideshow

Hi,
I scanned some 4 X 6 print photos in JPEG format. They look quite clear and sharp in Preview. After I imported them into DVDSP for a slideshow and built the project, the photos look like they lost a good deal of their sharpness, at least using DVD Player on the VIDEO_TS folder.
Any ideas on what to do?

Anything above 720 x 480 (I assume you work in NTSC) will make DVDSP to resize the images . . . and DVDSP is not good doing that job.
Try resizing the images before importing in Photoshop that makes a great scaling job.

Blurry Slideshow

I just upgraded to Aperture 3. I use the slide show to preview portraits with clients. The new version seems very blurry/has poor resolution. I'm using Large RAW images. The images are clear and sharp on my full sceen view but look terrible in the slide show. Any help appreciated.

Aperture uses your previews to generate the slideshow. What are your preview settings in the preferences? I would check that first, and make sure resolution is at least the one that is the longest side of your display (i.e. on my 20" iMac I choose 1680x1680, and Apple has helpfully asterisked the correct choice for me/you).
The next thing to check is that quality is set somewhere north of at least 8. To be honest, I keep my preview quality at 8, and when I want to make a slideshow to preview with people, I set the quality to 10 (or even 12, though not sure that's necessary, I think 12 just bloats the files with no real discernible quality increase). I would then command-click (or select all) the photos in the slideshow, then option-"right click"(or control-option-click) to bring up the menu and select "generate previews".
If it just says "update previews" you haven't held "option" down. "option" changes "update" to "generate". Generate previews forces new previews, whereas just "update" only makes new previews if something has changed in the photo since the last time the preview was made.
This should regenerate the previews for those photos with your new settings and they should look better.
Try those things, and play around with the resolution/quality to find a setting that works best for you.

Blurry slideshow photos when exported to iTunes

My photos in iPhoto are crisp and clear, but when I export a slideshow (into iTunes) they come out blurry. What am I doing wrong?

Text in 4b5 is somewhat blurry on most sites; text was clear in 4b4 and earlier. How can I fix this?

On the left is FF 4b5, with slightly blurry text on Lifehacker. On the right is Chrome 6.0.472.59 beta, without the blurry text.
I should note that the blurry text was not an issue in FF 4b4 or earlier.
I have also upgraded just now to 4b6, and the same issue is present.

This is caused by hardware acceleration. You can resort to the previous font rendering by turning off hardware acceleration. To do that open the options dialog (Click on the Firefox button, then select Options...), go to the Advanced panel then select the General tab, then de-select the setting to use hardware acceleration.

Thin vertical black lines and somewhat blurry fonts

I was using the App store when all of a sudden my screen goes into a trange whitish background. I rebooted the laptop when when it came back on it is fuzzy in the fonts are a little blurry with small black lines running vertically across the entire screen. Could anyone help? Its a macbok pro 2009.

Take it in for diagnosis. A hardware problem cannot be diagnosed remotely.

Why do my pictures become blurry after exporting from lightroom 5?

My pictures become somewhat blurry or not as sharp after I export them from lightroom 5. PLEASE HELP!!!

If you are looking at your exported pictures in preview.app than that is the culprit. It uses an extremely poor downscaling algorithm for displaying large images and will make every large image, no matter how sharp originally, display blurry. In preview you can hit command-0 (that's a zero) to make the image display 1:1 to see the actual detail. Make sure you have it's preferences in the images panel set to "Define 100% scale as 1 image pixel equals 1 screen pixel". I think in older Mac OS X versions, it was called something like ignore image dpi for display or so but I don't remember. You can also make sure to downscale (with correct output sharpening in the export panel) upon export from Lightroom. If the exported image is smaller than the display, Preview should display 1:1 by default upon opening.

.wmv output looks blurry

Ok here's the scene..boom:
CS5
SD footage with titles and logo trying to encode as .wmv. When switching back between source and output window, the output is considerably blurrier than the source. I have scaled down my images and logos in PS before importing into PP. The main problem is that my lower third is somewhat blurry.
I have been succussful in the past encoding the exact same video to .WMV. This is why I'm stumped. It has worked before and now the output is slightly blurry for everything on the screen no matter what I change in the encoding options.
.mp4 (H .264) works great, but, I need .WMV in addition to MP4. Thats just what my employer wants. We use .WMV to send to customer PCs and .MP4's for youtube.
Output: 720x480 (.9091), compressed, VBR, 2 pass, Avg 1500kbps

I have been fiddling with images and the timeline itself sine the first successful encode to .WMV a few months ago. is there anything that I could've done to the timeline or certain importing that might affect this for .WMV.

That’s exactly what I was thinking about bringing up with my employer. Isn't .wmv good in the sense that a lot of people can make use of it.
Is .avi just as compatibile with Media Player.
We send out dozens of different videos to thousands of different potential customers. Some have PCs of different capabilities and others have Macs.
What would be a better format that could serve all those people? Or most of those people I guess. I was thinking .avi and maybe start doing .mov for the Mac users.

Project Settings for an HD Slideshow

Hi,
I'm creating a somewhat lengthy slideshow in Final Cut Express using 200+ images. The images are of many different resolutions — all very high (some up to 6-7000px wide. Some are JPEG, some are TIFF. My film consists mainly of these images (with some intermittent video), using Ken Burns style pans and zooms and titles created in Photoshop overlayed.
A while back I did a little trial render of an image pan at 1080i, but when I played the quicktime file on my computer the quality was bad — the image was not smooth at all. I don't remember exactly what settings those were, and I don't know if that was due to my computer not being able to handle the size of the movie.
I am using a 2.2 ghz MacBook Pro with 2GB of memory (I might be getting 4GB in the near future).
I would like to know what initial video settings I should use for this type of project in order to get optimal quality in the end. This is a very special project. I would be OK with using either 720i/p or 1080i/p. Of course, it would be nice to use the highest resolution possible but I understand if this would be too much for my hardware
Also, I need to know whether I will need to do anything to the images (like, in photoshop?) in order to format them for optimal quality in the video, or if I can use different sized JPEGs and TIFFs and still have it all look perfectly consistent in Final Cut Express.

thanks for your reply. I will try to get FCP, but it's very cost-prohibitive and I may have to stick with Express. Is there no hope for a high quality final render if I use FCE?
Also, the problem with resizing all of the images is that a lot of them will start very zoomed-in, and then slowly zoom all the way out to convey a sense of the scale of the object itself.
I can easily convert everything to TIFFs in photoshop. Is that all you think needs to be done, besides resizing? Any other formatting, like pixel shape, I should do?
If I'm constrained to FCE, what are the ideal HD settings to use? I don't mind if it takes a ton of time to render the large images, all I care about is quality.

I am looking to make presentations on a DVD as well as to Apple TV for displaying work to clients.
The reason I choose FCE was I wanted much more control then iPhoto was giving me. I have looked at all the other pre-canned apps that make slidshows from photos and they just dont offer enough control.
Is this even possible with FCE?

"Access to this album or movie is restricted"

When I attempt to view a page within one of my published web gallery albums, I rarely get past the first page without getting the message "Access to this album or movie is restricted. Please contact the site host for a username and password." This message also comes up anytime I attempt to switch the view from Grid (switching to Mosaic, Carousel or Slideshow also sets this off). I'm assuming this is a bug. Any thoughts? I apologize in advance if this has been covered.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I'm able to view all of the galleries without issue. You might try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again. If that doesn't help log into another account on your Mac, access the web galleries and see if you can from there. Report back the results.
NOTE: I'm noticing the photos are somewhat blurry/grainy. What size are the originals that you're using for the web gallery.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Camera Raw - saving photos- help!

I edit my photos in camera raw, and after clicking "done", I save my photos in another folder on my computer. This has never been a problem until recently. When I go to that folder to open the photo, the photo is somewhat blurry, grainy, and the color is not at all what it looked like when I saved it from camera raw. I have been trying all day to figure out where I went wrong. I have tried saving as pjeg, tif, psd from raw - opening to PS and saving different ways from there - exporting instead of "saving". ---- because this is something that just started yesterday I am wondering if there is something I clicked by accident in camera raw to make this happen. PLEASE help!!! thanks so much!!

The small pixilated preview image sounds like a thumbnail embedded by the camera and the full-res preview is not getting updated and it used to be.
How are you saving your photos after you click Done and how are you viewing those photos after they are saved? Are you creating copies of your raw files as JPGs and looking at those, or are you expecting the embedded previews in the raw files to change after clicking Done in ACR?
Do you save ACR edits to XMP sidecar files or to a central camera-raw database. This is in the ACR preferences, somewhere.

In administration server (machine A) I defined two servers to be run in

in machine A
I'm going to bind a same service into these above servers of my DECluster.
In machine B's startManagedWeblogic.sh I have:

configure something with admin console or is everything handled by
connecting to the administation server and reading the domain's config.xml
from machine A.
I'm sure I have missed some fundamental idea for building clustered services
and would greatly appreciate if someone had any good tips or ideas.

Logging onto admin server via admin port is broken currently. I wouldsuggest
you to set only listen port
and see how that goes.

Exported Video Does Not Look Right

I am sure this is a basic setting I am overlooking, but a lot of this is new to me - any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
My goal is to create a high quality 640x480 movie for Computer/Web viewing only.
• I shot a short video using a Canon Vixia HV30 to mini DV tape using the SD standard - no problem. I guess that records at 720x480 non-square pixels at 29.97fps - is that right?
• I used log and capture inside of FCP v6.0.5 to capture the various clips I needed - no problem (I don't think). If I open each of those clips from the finder in Quicktime they look "pretty" good, but a bit of aliasing on the diagonals and somewhat blurry, but not sure why? Everything looks sharp on the smaller camera LCD screen? and looks pretty good inside of FCP on the Canvas? If I open one of these captures directly inside of Quicktime and do a get info, it says...

FPS: 29.95
Normal Size: 640x480 pixels
Current Size: 640x480 pixels (Actual)
All these Quicktime movies appear slightly larger in height and width than the same clips when viewed in the FCP Canvas?
If I open the Sequence Settings in FCP it says...
Frame Size 720 x 480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio NTSC - CCIR 601 /DV (720x480)
Field Dominance: None
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Everything looked pretty good inside FCP so I Exported a QT Movie using "Current Settings". Then opened the resulting self-contained movie in QT and it looks pretty bad. When I get info in QT on the rendered final movie it reads...
DV 720x480 (640x480)
FPS: 29.97
Normal Size: 720x480 pixels
Current Size: 640x480 pixels (Actual)
So... the FPS and the Normal Size are not the same as the captured original clips.
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
Is this just the wrong Sequence Settings, Export Settings or do I have to start over an re-capture all my footage some other way?
PS - I am assuming that the DV Camcorder is recording interlaced (60 fields) rather than progressive - is that right. Do I need to de-interlace the video somehow?

I'm far from being an expert, but since no one has replied to you yet, and because I've been helped out here plenty of times, I'll post something and who knows -- it may be the answer.
Your post was really long but from what I can gather, you're wondering why your exported video does not look good when you open it in QuickTime. Try this: Open the video in QT, hit command-J, then click on Video Track, then at the bottom right (under Visual Settings) you'll see High Quality, Single Field, and Deinterlace. Click around on those to see if that improves what you see.

MEGA 651 dual display?

My setup is MEGA 651 with AIW ATI Radeon 8500, Win XP. As a monitor I am using Sony Grand Wega 42" LCD TV. Works great. I am using 2 connections from my video card, one is S-Video (display is somewhat blurry) and DVI (very sharp and looks like screen of a laptop). My tv allows to choose to display from different sources and those 2 connections are treated as such.
The limitation is I can only use 640X480 resolution, which is fine for movies, internet (wish I could have better resolution here).
Few days ago I got game SIMS for my kids with few expansion packs. Problem now is that they can not START the game with the resolution of 640X480, the minimum for the game is 800X600.
I found a temporary solution to use a regular monitor to start the game (I unplug DVI connector from tv and plug a regular 17" monitor into the video card), and then I switch the S-Video source on my tv to play it.
I tried to find any info if tv can support more that 640X480 but non found. If I switch to higher resolution I can not boot or if I boot in Safe Mode screen goes nuts until I reset to lower. Another option is to leave second monitor, but to use onboard VGA connector, but I can not find any info how I can use both AGP and onboard video simultaniously. Is there setting in the BIOS to enable. it seems that onboard video works only if there is no other video card installed.

you can only use onboard VGA or VGA card in AGP slot - you cannot use both
have you checked for any updated drivers for your video card? i use a Geforce FX5200 in my Mega 651 for TV-out, and I can select up to 1024x768 for TV resolution (though obviously its not a really useable resolution on my CRT TV, connected with composite video) though i prefer to leave it at 800x600

if you are only using one display (your 42" Wega ) then i don't understand why you need to have both types of connections connected to it. if the Sony has a DVI input, that is the only option you should use, as even s-video is inferior to that by a mile
