Song corruption on 4G iPod (clickwheel)

So, I've read through the forums and found that this issue is becoming more and more prevalent. The problem being that songs can become truncated for no reason.
Just last night I was listening to a new album and then this morning a song from that album cuts off half way through where it was fine the night before.
I've found that simply removing the song and then reloading it on the iPod will fix the song, however, there still seems to be no reasoning or resolution behind getting the behavior to stop. I've reset the iPod firmware / OS many times now in the hopes that it would solve itself but it never does.
Is this a hardware issue or software issue with the iPod. I have not yet tried to go backwards on iPod software so I can't say wether its the most recent iPod OS that's the problem or maybe some other failure in the device.
So, I guess what I'm after is if anybody has any insight as to what the root problem is and wether there is any hope for it being fixable?

hi Shawn!
I've found that simply removing the song and then reloading it on the iPod will fix the song, however, there still seems to be no reasoning or resolution behind getting the behavior to stop. I've reset the iPod firmware / OS many times now in the hopes that it would solve itself but it never does.
i can't help with explaining the cause of what's going on, but some versions of this seem to be an itunes/ipod sync thing.
there are two variations that i've seen with belladonna and attractive beast. attractive beast is set to automatically sync ... folks can see slightly different things happening if they have manual sync settings with their ipods.
both belladonna/attractive-beast variations
i plug attractive beast in and i see a song (or songs) transfer to attractive beast. i haven't adjusted that song in any way, so it shouldn't be updating.
Wilco, "Handshake drugs" variation
the song transfers to the ipod. i see that it has been updated. i check "Handshake drugs" on the ipod. i see the song length has been truncated. i go to the song in my itunes library. its length has been truncated by the same amount. i click on the song to select it. i watch the time spontaneously change back to the correct length. i reupdate "Handshake drugs" to attractive beast. the normal length version shows up there.
Modest Mouse, "Exit does not exist" variation
i'm on the lookout now for any other truncated songs on attractive beast. i think i spot one: "Exit does not exist". i make a note of the name of the song and the time. i go back to the itunes library and see that the song length there also seems to be truncated. hoping against hope, i click on the song. the song length stays stubbornly fixed at the apparently-truncated length. "bother" i think to myself (or words to that effect).
some days/weeks later i see a whole clump of songs (ten?)mysteriously update to attractive beast. i notice one of them is "Exit does not exist" i play it both on attractive beast and in the itunes library. it's not truncated anymore. i check the sticky i made the note on. the song length in both itunes and on belladonna is longer than the one i noted down when it seemed to be truncated. "woohoo! what the? woohoo! what the?" i think to myself.
a report about the manual synching variation
I saw three instances of the song reference changing time. I have found (so far) three songs on my mini that ended abruptly - before the normal conclusion of the song. The time via the iPod corresponded with the early end of the song.
I went back into iTunes and the times there were also shortened. Once I clicked on the song to play it, the time 'magically' reverted (right before my eyes) to the correct amount, and the song played completely through. The mini would still only have playback up to the shortened time.
Attaching the mini (in manual mode, as always), all I needed to do was click on the song reference and it also changed back to normal - no syncing was performed as far as I can tell. Just a time update and the song now plays through on the mini. I could not have had a smaller file on the mini as I had no additional room to fit in another 3:30 of song file. I can only assume that the total song file was on the mini, but the time length was incorrect and driving the early end of the playback.
other random observations
this has been happening to me since at least 6.0.0.18 ... i haven't seen it so much (if at all, apart from the weird "Exit" spontaneous multiple-re-update-de-truncation) with 6.0.2.23, 6.0.1.3 or 6.0.4.2.
there was a hint that it was most likely to happen with songs that i had been playing in itunes, and then stopped partway through (in some manner or another). it's not a universal correlation though (as far as i could tell).
love, b

New songs synced to my ipod wont play, the songs play fine on itunes and appear on ipod but wont play..any help appreciated

So, if you select one of these songs on the iPods screen, and try to play it, what happens?  The iPod does nothing?  It skips to the next song?
It's possible you will have to do a Restore on the iPod, if there is data corruption on the iPod causing this problem.  The Restore erases the iPod, and removes any corruption.
NOTE:  There may be a hardware problem, such as the iPod's hard drive becoming unreliable, that is causing this problem and data issues.  It may continue to operate as long as its data stays mostly unchanged, but if you do a Restore to update the hard drive's data in a major way, it is possible that the Restore will fail and leave the iPod non-operable.

  • Unable to transfer songs from itunes to iPod

After a long time trying to get this iPod to function again,I am now unable to transfer some songs on to the iPod.When I attempt to drag and drop a song ,it doesnt want to know.Currently also, the iPod is not recognised by the desktop.Well!!!...It does when I connect it,then it dis appears.

Well since your getting the "Sad ipod" face, you may have to sent it in for repair. That said, the "iTUnesDB is corrupt" message is covered here along with ways to have windows format the ipod (Link Below)
Now if you do have to format the ipod with windows, when windows is done YOU HAVE TO RESTORE IT WITH THE IPOD UPDATER BEFORE LOADING IT WITH ITUNES!!!!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=361771
If you put the ipod in "Disk Mode" like the instructions say, and you can't get it to show in windows, you will have to disable the "iPodservice.exe" in task manager, format with windows THEN RESTART THE PC so the ipodservice is running again and you can restore it with the ipod updater

  • ITunes syncs songs already on the ipod

When I connect my ipod and wait for it to upload some new songs, say for example like 5 songs, it ends up syncing songs i already have on my ipod. I noticed that all the songs syncing to my ipod are songs that have been played in my itunes library. Can anyone please tell me how to stop this?

Yes. You should not delete the music from your computer. Sync means make the iPod match the library. An iPod is to easily lost, stolen, damaged, or corrupted to be relied upon as the only location holding the media.

  • Corrupt album crashes iPod, how can I remove it?

I have a BIG problem with one of the albums on my iPod. It has somehow corrupted and everytime it tries to play a track it crashes the iPod. I know thanks to Apple being paranoid I can't physically remove it by going "into" the iPod. But is there a way to actually remove all the tracks (42 of them) from my iPod or do I have a piece of junk that will crash everytime it hits that album?

I know thanks to Apple being paranoid I can't physically remove it by going "into" the iPod.
Sorry, no idea what that means.
There are several methods of deleting songs/albums from the iPod and/or iTunes, and the method you choose depends on the settings you have selected for your iPod.
If you have the iPod set to automatically transfer songs, and you no longer want a copy of those songs/albums on either the iPod or in iTunes, simply delete the songs/albums in iTunes. Next time you connect the iPod, the songs/albums will be deleted from there also.
Only do this if you no longer want the songs on both the iPod and your computer.
If you have the iPod set to manually manage your songs, and you want to delete the song from the iPod only, then select the iPod in the source list of iTunes, or click on the "music" option underneath it to show all your songs. Highlight the song(s) you no longer want on the iPod, right click and select "clear", or use the edit menu as previously mentioned.
This method only deletes the songs from the iPod, so if you no longer want the song in iTunes also, you'll need to delete it from there separately using the method above.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, all these settings can be found in the summary screen.

  • Songs on Owner's ipod cannot be updated because playlists no longer exist

I recently uploaded new CDs into my itunes library. When I tried to sync it said that it could only sync an owner's selection. I agreed because I was in a hurry. Later I came back to delete some of the songs that I do not use and I get the message "Songs on Owner's ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist." I tried to delete some of the unused playlists and now my ipod is blank with not a single song on it. I want to get my playlists back and my music back.

You will have to create a couple of new playlists to use to sync your iPod, then your iPod preferences will need to be change to sync on those specific playlists.

  • Songs not playing on Ipod

Having transfered songs from Itunes to Ipod, some songs appear on the ipod list, but when click to play, it skips certain songs.
In one example, it skips 6 songs on an album and starts playing only on track 7.
On itunes, the songs play perfectly well, just not on the ipod
    Any thoughts?

Yes. iToons 8 does not work with Windows. I do not understand why Apple still offers it for download except to sabotage Windows users' iPuds.

  • More on itunes 6.0.1 songs not going to ipod URGENT help

I have tried to read every releated post on this but I am having the same problems as other but the typical solutions arent working (Its urgent because I am leaving town and hoping to have the new music)
When I try to transfer songs it says the ipod software is too old, I have updated with 10-12 updater previous posts say to only mount ipod when instructed but it never prompts me. When it gives an option for installing on hard drive or ipod I have tried the ipod option it says I need to have OSX 10.2.8 which I do. I have itunes 6.0.1 (3) which has solved other peoples problems. In other help areas it says to use the restore through the ipod updater but never comes up either. I am hesitant to restore and then have nothing work anyway. It seems as if the ipod is never being updated. I dont know what else to ry. Any ideas Please.

Jennifer, I thought iTunes 6.01 was only for 10.3.9 and above?
iTunes 6 requires 10.3.9+ for video, but otherwise requires 10.2.8+.
I had the same problem Jennifer mentioned, and what I did was as follows:
Go to Applications -> Utilities -> iPod Software Updater. Double-click on the updater in this list with the 2005-10-12 date attached to it.
In our case, it said we had iPod software version 2.2 installed, and needed updating. I clicked on the "Update" button, installed the software, and waited for the 'pod to reboot. Once it did, we had version 2.3 installed and we could transfer music again.
Hope this helps. Some people have reported this failing with a message that it found no firmware or something like that, but I know it's worked for some.

I would like to copy all the songs from one Ipod into another. All the songs are into my Itunes account, I tried to drag and drop the songs from the old Ipod to the new one but it doesn't work. Is there a way to do it ?
I share one Itunes account with other people from my family and one person would like to keep the same songs on the new Ipod as the ones which were on the old one.
Thanks in advance for your answer.

    Hello Chris,
Thanks for your answer. I was hoping for an easier answer. Too bad there is no drag and drop solution, it would have been much easier.

  • I cannot update the song information on my iPod in iTunes.

I got an iPod Touch 4g about a year ago.  Last month the iPod all the sudden stopped working. I took it into the store twice and the second time they simply replaced it with a new one. Since then I have been having two problems:
    1) The operating system has been running extremely slowly. I brought it into the store today and they suggested reinstall the OS and that this should fix the issue with it. I can't really ***** that problem right now.
    2) I for some reason cannot update the song information on the iPod directly in iTunes.  If I change the name of the song or the album or genre in Itunes that is actually on the iPod, it'll show up as changed in Itunes but on the iPod itself it hasn't changed. On my old one, whenever a change was made it would often say, "One moment while library updates." It doesn't do this on my replacement.
In order to change information for the songs, I need to delete the copy off my iPod, update the information on the computer copy and then retransfer it over. Is there some setting I need to change in order for the changes to take place. I would like to avoid going back to the store a fourth time.

    1) Powering off nd then back on the iPOd tends to fix the lag problem for a while
    2) The problem with updating music is a known problem with iOS 5 and as you found out, you have to delete/unsync the music form the iPod and then resync.

  • Songs appear on my ipod 5 when it is connected to my itunes but don't show on the ipod, what should i do?

I have just bought the new i touch and synced my songs from my itunes to the itouch. However, the songs appear on my ipod when it is connected to the itunes but aren't actually on my ipod.
    What should I do?
    Thanks

    Hi Hirra,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you've synced your iPod touch with iTunes, but the music doesn't appear on the device, you may want to try setting up syncing in iTunes again by following the steps in the right article below. If you're syncing music, try un-checking and then re-checking the "Sync music" checkbox in iTunes.

  • I have tried importing / exporting my playlist from itunes; dragging songs from itunes to my ipod icon in the right corner; nothing is working.  I want to put songs back on my ipod touch version 6.1.5 from itunes version 11.1.3.8; any one have any ideas

This is very fustrating I have tried a few different things I have seen on-line and nothing is working.  My itunes is version 11.1.3.8 and my ipod touch is ios version 6.1.5.  Since last Christmas I have a playlist called Christmas songs and I would like to move the songs back onto my ipod.  Before I could drag the songs from under the songs list over to the right and a list including my ipod would show.  It still does but when I do it now the songs do not show up in my ipod.  I would appreciate any ideas to get this to work again.

Verify you have the right boxex checked to sync
iTunes: Syncing media content to iOS devices and iPod
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Restore from backup. See:
