Song Files Mysteriously Disappear?

Today, I just download a new album from the iTunes Store. After I downloaded it, every song and video in my library (except the newly downloaded album)had an exclamation point appear beside them. Each file now says that the original file could not be found. I have downloaded all of my songs legitimately off of iTunes and now none of them will work. Why did this happen, and can I fix it?

See if they are still on your hard drive:

  • [Solved]Inittab file mysteriously disappears

As the title says, my inittab file is gone, making me unable to boot into...anything.  It does ask me for a run level, only to return "No more processes on this level".
Can someone post their inittab file so I can make a new one?  Or know a way to recover it?

And please give details on 'slightly further', it may not be the only thing affected.
I'm using rieserfs and all was fine until a reboot.
As I said in my first post, since inittab was missing, it would ask for a runlevel and return with
INIT: No more processes in this runlevel
no matter which one I pick.
Re-adding the inittab made it stop asking for a runlevel but errors:
    INIT: version 2.86 booting
    INIT: cannot execute "/etc/rc.sysinit"
    INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
    INIT: cannot execute "/etc/rc.multi"
Id "c1" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Id "c3" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Id "c5" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Id "c4" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Id "c6" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
Id "c2" respawned to fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: no more processes on this runlevel
I figured something strange was going on when I noticed my rc.config got wiped...not sure how...thankfully I had a backup of that.
The hard drive is fine, since Windows has no issues.

Older Zens don't support AAC, which is the format iTunes uses for songs.
You can convert from AAC to MP3, which every media player under the sun will play.  Here's a tutorial: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10096807-49.html

  • External hard drive mysteriously disappeared.

My external hard drive (Firewire) mysteriously disappeared. I can get it to pop up in Disk Utility, but I can't get it to show on the desktop. I've tried it on a few Mac computers. Do you have any idea what happened?

That's very strange. I don't think I've heard of DU exhibiting that behavior before.
I presume the reason you don't want to erase the drive is that there is un-backed-up data on it, and that if you could recover that data you could either reformat (erase) or dispose of the drive.
You may want to try downloading and using the free demo version of one or more of these data recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue II
    FileSalvage
    VirtualLab
In each case, the demo will show you what files the full version would be able to recover from the drive. You can then decide whether the files you could recover are valuable enough to justify buying the full version of the utility.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • So my song file actually is corrupted...

Ok, so I got my new macpro, I thought everything was working great, until I tried to move some audio and it disappeared completely.
    bah...
Ok.. so-- I have approx 100 tracks of audio + software instruments.... What is the best way to copy over my data to a new song file, audio placement, note events, plugins, and automation (for plugins too)..
This feels like a nightmare, but... maybe someone here has some advice.
I did try the whole select all & apple-c and then apple-v in a new song.. The result was ugly, all my audio parts overlapped ontop of each other.
    -patrick

    It's so incredibly evil.
all i can think is that you must have been very bad in a past life...
    try:
select all you midi tracks and make them start at the beginning of the file and end at the end of the song.
make midi files of your audio tracks. (duplicate the track and put a midi region on it.
    move automation to region.
select all midi regions and export as midi file. your tempo info should go with it.
save each of your tracks as csts (channel strip settings)
export your audio as OMF (preserves interleaved)
import your midi and then load up your csts.
    import your audio.
    move region data to automation.
i really think you should stop work in this file - you are just going to go from bad to worse. errr....maybe that should be from worse to explosion.

  • Itunes can not find original song file

Suddenly my itunes can not find the song's original file.
I see that the file is on the driver but when I double click on Itunes I get this mesage:
"the song could not be used because the original file could not be found.
    Any helpers out there?

I've been experiencing this problem for a while now. It happens with version 7.1 but it started with an earlier version of iTunes 7. I never experienced it before iTunes 7. In my experience the number of files iTunes "thinks" is missing increases with the length of time iTunes has been running between restarts (I usually just put my system to sleep overnight so it can "run" for days on end). When it first started happening I used to go and find the "missing" music file(s) and reconnect it(them). Then, one day, I found a flood of "missing" songs. I decided I had nothing to lose by stopping iTunes and restarting it. When I restarted iTunes none of my songs were missing! This indicated to me that it's the iTunes code that's active after a restart that has a bug that makes it lose track of the music files.
To check, I looked in the Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml file for songs while they were being reported as "missing", and, lo and behold, the song file locations are still there. iTunes must reread the xml file when it starts up and this cures the problem, at least in my case. (Too bad it doesn't use the file while it's running.)
I usually just play my entire library in random order. So, if a song or two disappears, I'm rarely aware of it. All I've been doing lately is stopping and starting iTunes when I feel like getting rid of the "!" scourge.

  • It appears that my iTunes Library of song just suddenly disappeared from my iTunes. Did I lose it or is someway I don't know?

To double check it wasn't misplaced do a Spotlight search for a few tracks you know exist.  Spotlight will usually find them even if the files have obscure names.
If you really, really can't find any of this anywhere then it is possible it is all gone.  Normally an update or doing anything with iTunes should not do this, but once or twice a week out of millions of iTunes users we see somebody who has lost a library.  In that case you have to restore it from your computer's backup.  If you don't have one (why not?) you have to rebuild the library from the sources.  You can re-download most media you have purchased from Apple from the Store (not all though).

  • Files mysteriously deleted.

I had a folder in my User folder that had quite a lot of important information that has mysteriously disappeared. I ran Data Rescue on the drive and it could not find the folder. The trash is empty. I have searched the entire hard drive for this folder to no avail. I heard somewhere that there is a log that records any file modifications done in the OS. If I can access this, then I might be able to find out whether the folder was just moved or if it was actually deleted. Does anyone know how to access this if it does exist?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Did you include +system files+ in your search? If it got moved to, say, your Preferences folder, it might not show up otherwise.

There is such a thing, but you won't be able to access it easily or identify anything. It's a hidden file on each disk, the +File System Event Store+ that contains the address of each folder that had any sort of change made to it's contents. It's used by Time Machine and other apps that need to be able to process all adds, changes, or deletions, but to save space (it's recycled continually) it doesn't contain file names or even addresses, just that of the enclosing folder.
You really should do regular backups of your entire system so things like this aren't a big problem, not to mention that when your internal HD fails (and they all do, sooner or later), or something else awful happens, you risk losing everything.
Do yourself a favor and don't learn this the hard(er) way. Get an external drive, or perhaps a Time Capsule, preferably 2-4 times the size of the data on your Mac, and do one or both of the following:
Let Time Machine do it's hourly, automatic backups.
Make regular backups via CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper!, or another such app.
If you do both, make two separate partitions on the external disk for the two sets of backups.
    Remember, Murphy was an optimist!

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • ITunes does not delete songs  -- Send song files to the Trash for deletion

    27May2012
    Apple Support:
I have Itunes on an external drive.  I put the (song) files on another external drive for storage becasue the itunes drive is full.
After copying the files, I tried to delete the songs.  I had the option to keep the files or send them to the trash.
I selected the send to trash option, then went to the Finder to empty the trash.
The files were taken off the library, but the files were not deleted.  My hard drive is still very full.
How do I delete the files  -- remove them from my hard drive.
    Anohter issue:
I tried the same thing earlier this morning.  I may need to reinstall the songs on Itunes (once I get itunes to delete the files from the hard drive).
I appreciate any help you can give me.

It's definitely intel, why wouldn't it be?
    I don't know.
    You list a G5.
A G5 is a PowerPC chip made by Motorola, not Intel.
And G5 Macs/iMacs have not been made for +4 years.

  • I have duplicative song files in my library that are grayed out.  This seems to cause a syncing problem to my ipod or iphone.  How can I clean up this mess?

I chose to let iTunes rearrange my files and it appears to have duplicated them in my computer's drive.  So now I have the same folders/files directly under my D drive (second computer hard drive) and also in the iTunes Music Folder that iTunes created.  Wasn't sure what to do so I did another import and now I have files in my library that are grayed out with the small i symbol in the circle next to them.  I also have the working (bolded) files too.  How can I clean this up?

Is there a way to override the 256kbps "conversion" when uploading to iCloud?
No. All music that is mirrored in the cloud will be AAC@256 Kbps.
    Musicman05 wrote:
Along the same lines, if I "download" a song from my library to my iPhone, then plug my iPhone into my computer and sync the song file from my computer, will the higher quality original file overwrite the 256 one?
No, because with iTunes Match enabled on an iOS device traditional syncing of music via USB is disabled. All music management is done directly on the device.
    Musicman05 wrote:
Also, if I want to syncronize another computer using iTunes match, how can I get the higher quality audio files?  Will I simply have to transport all of them by an exernal hard drive or thumb drive?
You will first have to copy the high-quality audio files to the computer, add them to the iTunes library then enable iTunes Match.

  • How do I find duplicate songs/files in iTunes 11?

How do I find duplicate songs/files in iTunes 11?
Earlier versions of iTunes had a simple menu option to click on.
All duplicates would then be listed. Cannot find this option now.
    Regards ..... blayk.

If you want to free up your memory, maybe first checking to see if you got duplicates. -
From the File menu in iTunes, choose Show Duplicates. iTunes will then list all of the duplicate titles in your library.
If you delete a music in the iTunes folder, then when you try to play that particular music in your iTunes, it won't work as iTunes wouldn't be able to find it. However, when you import music on to your computer, always import straight into your iTunes, no where else.

  • How do I convert AIFF song files in iTunes to ACC files to fit iPod?

How do I convert AIFF song files in iTunes to ACC files to fit iPod? My AIFF files are appartently bigger per song than ACC files. How do I convert an AIFF song or playlist in iTunes to ACC files so they take up less room. Right now I can only fit 50 songs as opposed to 500 songs. The songs are already in iTunes as AIFF files. Most of the songs I inport are original songs from CD's that are already AIFF files. How do I convert them when going into my iPod?

Thank you so much! I now know how to convert AIFF audio files to ACC files, and I can keep the original AIFF file! One other concern though -- how do I tell which is the bigger AIFF file and which is the new smaller ACC file? iTunes doesn't have an obvious place/window that tells me the audio file size. Is there a way to tell the two apart. It looks like it creates an identical file name, not even a "copy" extension or anything -- so it's impossible to tell them apart. Is there another secret here?

  • How do I fix broken song files in iTunes with songs transferred from my iPod to my computer?

Recently got a new computer but when I tried to transfer the files in My Music>iTunes to my new computer I realized that only about half the songs in my library have folders in the iTunes folder, even purchased songs (no idea why). I could download mp3s of every broken song and re-do it that way, but I would rather figure out a way to restore the files from my iPod and save a lot of time.
I enabled disk use on my iPod and dragged the folders from iPod_control>Music to a folder on my desktop but the songs are all assigned random four letter names. I don't know if iTunes will be able to detect the right file to restore each song if I just direct it to this folder (using the prompt when you try to play the song), not to mention that the random songs are broken up into 49 separate folders so I would just have to randomly guess which folder to direct it to (I have 1993 songs). If I drag all the files into iTunes will it just create doubles of each song? I don't care about play counts, I don't know if that's stored in the song file, but it's not a big deal for me to replace all the songs in iTunes with the files from my iPod as long as all the files work.

Thank you so much! I now know how to convert AIFF audio files to ACC files, and I can keep the original AIFF file!
