Song in Gray

In iTunes Match why are some songs in gray & now I can't play them?

I just stumbled upon something that inexplicably fixed this "gray" problem for me ... Go into settings and switch on/off data and cellular roaming.  Then make sure that they are turned on.  Now on your iPhone turn off iTunes match and then turn it back ON. Be sure to turn iTunes match back ON on your iPhone.  For a split second it will say you have no music to play on your phone.  Ignore that. And if you have home sharing in your house, go to the home sharing in the Music-Setting area and make sure your password is entered. My wasn't until this fix.  Now give it 30 seconds and retry your songs to see if the have gone from gray to playable black font....

  • Some songs are grayed out in Itunes with ICloud/Download symbol, why and how do I fix it?

A random variety of my songs are grayed out so they won't play and it shows the ICloud download symbol next to them.  In the top left hand corner, it shows the cloud symbol with horizontal lines moving, as if it's in the process of downloading, but it has been on all day and there is no movement to shift the grayed out songs to functioning songs as if they have been downloaded.
    Does anyone have any suggestions??
    Thanks!!

Delete the incomplete tracks from your library, sending them to recycle bin, then download them again from your purchased history. If the problem persists use the "report a problem" links from your account history to contact the iTunes store support staff.
Are the incomplete tracks ones that you had previewed before purchasing the album? If so there may be a bug that needs reporting. See this recent post which explains why I ask the question...

  • TS4062 songs appear gray and won't play

Songs appear gray instead of black and will not play.  This is happening to newly downloaded songs from itunes as well as some older songs already on my device and in the library.

Are they Checked?  Right click on greyed out song and if Check selection appears at the bottom then it is not checked.
If not that it could be that Itunes Match is still completing the process. To Turn iTunes match off Store > Turn off itunes Match.
Or a combination of the two

  • My old computer crashed so I got a new computer and installed Itunes but some songs are grayed out.

My old computer crashed so I got a new computer and installed Itunes but some songs are grayed out

What actions, if any, did you take to transfer your iTunes Library from your old computer to your new one?  Unless you do so, the only songs that will automatically be available to you are your previous iTunes Store purchases - and even then this is dependent on both where you are (not all regional versions of the Store provide this facility) and whether the songs you've purchased are still available from the Store.
As leofanti points out, iTunes Match is not a backup service for your library.

  • IPod song list gray on iTunes

When I attach my iPod to my computer-iTunes comes up, but I can't do anything with it-all the songs are grayed out, I can't play, I can't sort, etc.
    Any ideas?

Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to syncronise (automatically update) with iTunes. If you want to access your iPod directly, drag songs to it, play it through your iTunes, connect it to a second computer etc. you just need to change the update method to "Manually manage songs and videos" in the iPod Summary tab and click Apply. The text will change from grey to dark and the padlock will disappear: Managing content manually on iPod
One thing to be aware of with manually updating is that the iPod also has to be manually ejected before the "Do Not Disconnect" message will go away. Safely disconnect iPod

  • Transferred itunes library from Windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. plugged in 3rd gen Ipod. Ipod icon appears along with playlists, music etc. Songs are grayed out and won't play. Please help!

I recently transferred itunes library from windows XP PC to new Windows 7 PC. The transfer was successful, however when I plug my 3rd gen Ipod Nano into the new PC, the Ipod icon appears along with the music, playlists, etc. The songs are shown but are 'grayed out' and wont play or sync. The 'Devices & Printers' window in new PC shows icon for Ipod driver & is OK. The icon for the Ipod appears but depicts a delta shaped warning icon that states that the Ipod is'not operating properly'. Tried troubleshooting. The troubleshooting message states the the Ipod is 'disconnecting'. Can you help me with this problem?

Then, I dropped the entire itunes file from the old PC (XP) into an empty external drive.
That "itunes file from the old PC"?  Is that the iTunes folder, from the old PC, that was in the user home folder's Music folder?
All of the library, playlists, etc. from the ipod as they always have been are shown, by they are 'grayed out' and will not open or play.
That's on the iPod, correct?  Are all of your old playlists in iTunes, from the old PC, still there in iTunes on the new PC?  Are the songs in iTunes still playable?
This document provides the steps to transfer a complete iTunes library between two computers.  See the section called External drive.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer - Apple Support
There are many steps, but this is a summary.  (1) On the old PC, consolidate all of your iTunes data into the iTunes folder.  (2) Copy this iTunes folder to the external drive.  (3) On the new PC (that has iTunes installed but NOT running), replace its existing iTunes folder with the one from the old PC (on the external drive).  When you run iTunes, it uses the iTunes folder from the old PC, and it should look like iTunes on the old PC (with all the playlists, ratings, play count, etc.), and your iPod will see the iTunes library as the same iTunes library (because it is the same library).
If you did something different, and the old PC is still accessible, you may want to try it using the method from the linked document.

  • Song download grayed out in iTunes-- plays on iPhone

I recently pre-ordered an album on iTunes.  One track was supposed to be instantly downloaded.  I hit check for available downloads and the song showed up in my iTunes library, but grayed out with a dotted circle to its left.  However, I just looked on my iPhone and the song is on the device and I can play the song.  The songs I purchase automatically sync to my iPhone but I don't understand how to get the song to show up and be able to be played on my computer in iTunes.  Thanks for your help!
EDIT: Somehow the problem fixed itself.  Sorry for posting the question in haste.  Maybe iTunes was just syncing or something.  Anyways, glad it's working.

You can transfer purchases from your phone or delete & redownload the song from your computer.
Open iTunes Store > Purchased (in the Quick Links section on the right)

  • Songs are graying out in iTunes playlist for no apparent reason

Here's an odd problem . . . iTunes, on my iPad, is graying out songs. For instance, when in any playlist, if I select one of the songs, iTunes runs through the list and grays out all the songs in the list. If that playlist was an album, then selecting the album afterward brings a screen that says: "has no content", or words to that effect.
It is similar to others' posts about songs disappearing, but not exactly . . . Anyone experience this?

I've seen the same thing reported in the itunes for Windows forum as well: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1707050&tstart=0
I have the same problem after installing itunes 8. Some, not all, playlists stop playing after one track when in shuffle mode. All the boxes in front of track names are ticked, and all my playlists (so far) seem to play through when they are not in shuffle mode. I've experimented with the buggy playlists by switching back and forth between shuffled and non-shuffled mode; if I start playing in shuffled mode, click the shuffle button to play songgs in order and then click it again, the new shuffled order always puts the currently playing track last. The clickybox "Skip when shuffling" (sorry, it's probably called something else - my itunes is localised into Swedish) is not ticked, and I've restored the number of times I've played and skipped each track, several times. This has to be a bug.
I see several people posting about the same thing but so far no general answer. Apologies if I've missed something.

  • All my songs are grayed- out in itunes

I got a new itouch. I used my cousin's itunes to sync songs and videos (since i was spending christmas/news years there) now that im home, i "erased and sync" and even restored it so i can sync with MY itunes. The problem is now that some of my songs are on my ipod, in itunes they are grayed-out (as in i cant click on it). Can anyone tell me why and how i can fix it? Do i have to restore my ipod as new or something?

H Again: OK, new things to try. I see you are on Windows, so it may look a little different than what I see. With your iPod Touch (IPT) connected, click on the IPT name in the left pane, you should now see several tabs, click the "summary" tab, one of the options at he lower part of this pane is "Manually manage music and videos". Now click on the "music" in the left pane, under your IPT. Are the songs accessible now? It did change on mine when I made this change.

  • Why are some songs in gray?

I currently have the latest Apple TV and I listen to my music streaming it from my itunes in my iMac on my network at home. For some reason some of the songs in some albums will be displayed in gray randomly. I'm able to play the song when it's shaded but it will then skip all the songs shaded in that album and skip to the next non-shaded song. It doesn't happen all the time but it's annoying when it does. I've been a mac user since the 90's so yes I've done all the usual restarting mac, apple tv, updating software. It has been happening for a few months now and to this day it still does it. My iMac is connected to my Airport Extremeac with an ethernet cable and not wifi. My Apple TV is connected to my Airport Extreme wirelessly.

Not the cause of this issue, but you will probably save your self some headaches if you also can connect your ATV via ethernet.
There are a bunch of things that could cause this.  Here are the top ones that come to mind.
         1.  The song was purchased with a different AppleId/account than the ATV was activated with.
         2.  ATV has not been able to connect to the internet for a while to verify its DRM activation status.
         3.  ATV can not connect to the iTunes device that is sharing the content.
         4.  If the song is not from the iTunes store and ATV does not think it can play the file type.  This usually only happens with video files.
         5.  The songs are on a shared external hard drive that has gone to sleep.
         6.  iTunes is not actually running on the computer severing the content.
Are you playing these though the music icon on ATV or going under computers?

  • Ipod nono song list grayed out

We just got an ipod nano 2g. When we connect it to our PC and select it in itunes, the song list is grayed out. Any suggestions?

This is normal, by default your iPod/nano is set to "Auto update" where when you connect the nano to the PCiTUnes automaticly loads new songs and updates existing ones on the nano. With it on auto update the iPOd is in basic terms locked off. Usually theres no need to access songs off the nano cuz the original songs are on your PC.
If you do want to access and play songs from your nano, you will rightclick it in iTUnes, select "iPod Options" and in the following window set it to "Manual Update" With this feature on the list will not be grayed out and you can play songs from the nano. Only down side to this is you will have to manually add songs and playlist by dragging them over the ipod in iTunes and then dropping it. also with this feature on you will have to manually eject the nano from the PC EVERYTIME you connect it to a PC.
A good place for you to start is "iPod 101" to read and learn all the ropes about iPod, how to use it, features ect ect http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/
Heres a direct link to the chapter in iPod 101 about auto updating and manual updating http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/tunes/3/
Other notes since you just got an iPod is to learn the 5R's to solve most iPod problems and to get the latest iPod updater to keep your iPod software up to date with the latest bug fixes and new features for iPod. The 5R's can be found here http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
The latest iPod updater adds bug fixes, volume limiter and I think this one is the one that added the "Hold menu button down to go directly to the main menu in iPod" and it can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

    - Delete and redownload by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    - If you can't delete
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Multiple Songs in Gray?

I have many copies of the same song on my iopd. Some of them are in black words and i can play them, others are in gray font and i can't play them.I figured out how to delete the ones that are still payable (in black font) but how do I delete the the ones  I can't click on or play (the ones in gray font) ????

You can create a playlist in iTunes and select the playlist for your slideshow. Take a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=446667 and especially at the screenshots linked to by lori_diloreto. The trick is finding that little "dimple" so that you can access your playlists.
