Song NEARLY imports, then have to force quit.

Hello all,
had some great advice here before with success, but this time I fear it may be a dead end. A little background info then in point form may be in order this time:
1. Have recently upgraded to iTunes 7.1 and 7.1.1
2. Successfully imported 1000 songs so far with bought and copied CD's
3. During latest incarnation of iTunes have also been able to import CD's with 'data protection' (in the same box set however some just get ejected after loading straight away).
4. COPIED VERSIONS I HAVE IMPORTED IN THE PREVIOUS VERSIONS OF I TUNES ARE NOW LOCKING ITUNES AND I HAVE TO FORCE QUIT EVERY TIME.
5. I have highlighted the above as with the remaining 10 CD's (purchased and previously burned) this seems to happen.
6. Have tried importing using various formats: AAC, MPE3, etc without success.
7. Superdrive was recently replaced.
Now, where it all goes South is the last few millimeters on the import bar in iTunes, on the first song, before the lock up.
Data protection I can understand but please bear in mind that those CD's have been imported OK in the past but now won't.
Also, some of those Data marked CD's (I had previously imported) will simply be ejected if iTunes is NOT open, others if iTunes was previously closed.
Seems to be little pattern in it at this stage except of the 'upgrade itself'. If the CD's (burned or bought) load, the force quit always seems to have to be initiated during the last few seconds of the first import. Tried also to uncheck the 1st song, with the same result.
If anyone has some pointers, let me know and we can try to narrow it down. My whole reson for importing is that ALL our 10 year collection was the victim of a break-in and I would like to secure this through back-ups nowdays.
Cheers
PS Excuse the untimely replies as Australia is many time zones away.

Well, after my posts and updates I have finllally imported nearly 1800 songs. The main work around for those that locked up iTunes just before the 1st import has always successfully been: Play first song and then import (something certainly new). The remaining 3 CD's are even a stranger even:
1. 2 burned CD's are shown as 'empty' (zero data) and won't mount. Have previously imported some songs from those CD's and there is no problem playing them in the home CD player.
2. 1 bought CD 'cycles' through reading and then ejects itself. Whilst it has 'data' on the reverse of it, I have imported one with an identical print (even came from the same box set).
Could this change maybe have to do with region code more than iTunes and OSX update? I did mention that this is a new Superdrive as well. When I get the chance, will try them at an Apple store and see what happens. How annoying though, only three to go and all my imports are done.
Any tackers on this final problem?
Cheers

  • Trying to print document freezes inDesign, then have to force quit program!

I've been trying to print a document and it throws indesign into a freeze. The pinwheel spins and spins and then when I open "force quit" under Mac, inDesign shows as "unresponsive." Other tasks seem to work fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

I've been printing to a Xerox Phaser 7500 (Snow Leopard) and it can be challenging. As  far as I can tell it likes you to take no shortcuts in the print menus. Meaning-- after clicking on Print, I am now always clicking Again on PRINTER at the bottom of the window, then making a selection under the XEROX menu, hitting print then print again. (Which model are you dealing with?)  [I 'm comfortable saying that the issue has nothing to do with the binary message which I'e been ignoring for eons]

  • Capture locks up when I stop recording....I then have to force quit

Yesterday I was capturing just fine, then I ran out of memory on my hard drive so I moved all my videos to an external hard drive and erased the videos from my hard drive. Now I can start the capture, but when I press the stop/esc button to stop the capture process Premiere pro locks up.
Any ideas, Im working on a macbook pro. When I go to my hard drive and look at the clips I just tried to capture they are there and play just fine ????

Mac has a quirk, no, lets call it a feature, that nothing gets deleted off a harddrive, not with your little animated trashcan or your "secure" erase. Unlike windows which deletes the pointer to the file and then tells the OS that the space is free, mac just deletes the pointers and leaves the files there to consume space without all the hassles of actually having any use. This is one of the many features that come with using a mac, including the ability for mac to randomly delete files (in my case critical project files), which has happened to me many times before.
Theres been many a time where i had to mount a mac drive onto a PC as a logical drive and format from there to actually be able to put anything it, even when i had deleted everything from it on the mac.
    So yeah, theres your problem.

  • Why do I have to Force Quit iTunes so often?

On my old G3 iBook I remember I had to Force Quit iTunes (can't remember which ancient version that was) sometimes when it 'froze' after I clicked a new track title on a CD that was in the Drive.
In iTunes 6, this never ever ever ever ever ever happened. Never. Not once. Ever. I silently congratulated Apple on eliminating that annoying particular little glitch.
Now I've recently downloaded iTunes 7 - it's happening again !! Several times when I click to play a different track on a CD in the drive, I get "iTunes (not responding)" and I have to Force Quit. This is REALLY REALLY annoying. Why has this old fault returned?
(btw I just saw the thread below mine, about iTunes needing Force Quit after playing 2 tracks on a CD? This is NOT the same fault. iTunes will happily PLAY a whole CD without complaining - the problem occurs after I double-click to play a different track while another one is still playing.)

FWIW, I have had a similar problem, where iTunes froze on random songs at two seconds into the song. I would have to force quit, then restart. This occurred when I put in a CD to play from the beginning, while I did other things. I have not witnessed your circumstances when clicking a new track to play. I do not do this often, except after I restarted iTunes to continue the CD.
I just deleted the com.apple.itunes.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences and so far, so good.

i use an external HD and thats fine.. all files are in there.  But I have no idea why my itunes app is getting stuck.
Am I the only person this is happening to? What can I do to correct this problem?

  • Safari hangs, freezes, and then i have to force quit

coming up on on my computer's first week anniversary and i have issues. this is not a good sign. help me love my computer again.
so, i open safari (3.1.2) and everything is going well. then after a few minutes, i click on a link or type in a url and everything stops. the program looks like it is loading slowly, then the spinning beach ball shows up and ruins the party. i have to force quit, which takes a little longer than it normally should. sometimes, this freezing will cause other programs i have open to close as well (itunes, firefox, etc.). any ideas?
(p.s. : i tried posting the report, but i got an error message saying the report was too long to post. weird. otherwise, i would have included it.)

    Hello,
If you only use the admin account, create another user account, log in to it and see if Safari functions properly. If it does, then the problem is isolated to your Home Folder.
Adding a new user account to your computer
You can create individual user ccounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add + and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete - to cancel.
Check your available drive space also. Select the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then Command + I that will prompt the Get Info window. Where it says: General, click the black arrow so it faces down. You will see: Capacity & Available. Make sure your available drive space never falls below 15% of the total drive. If you haven't sufficient drive space, you need to copy files over to an external source and free up drive space.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.
Get MacJanitor (if you haven't got a good disk utility). http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10491 run MacJanitor once a week.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialog box so large I can't get to the eject card button.   I have to force quit Aperture.  How do I fix?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button.  Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture.  How do I fix?

I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button.  The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload.  It has never done that before.  It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open.  I have to force quit aperture.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

What version of OS X are you using? If Yosemite, you need to update to 10.10.1 or higher.
In any case, start by going to the editor preferences>general, clicking this button and restarting the editor:

Sounds like one of your preference (.plist) files are corrupted.

  • Firefox freezes and a blank drop down box shows up, then I have to force quit the program

Firefox will randomly freeze and a white blank box will drop down. I have to force quit firefox and restart it, then it usually works fine without errors for a while. This seems to happen mostly when I am on facebook.

Disabled flash player plugin and it doesn't freeze anymore. Plan on reinstalling flash now and hopefully freezing stops.

  • I can't export, then I have to force quit

    Hi.
I can't export a four-minute Keynote file as a QT movie. I get the message "There’s not enough disk space, or there was a problem with the file." (I DO have the appropriate keynote preference checked for "Exit presentation after last slide.")
After I get the error message, which is shortly after the export begins, the program hangs up and I have to force quit.
    This is maddening.
Do I not have enough RAM (2G)? I have plenty of disk space.
Also, Keynote WILL export tiny files. That's why I suspect the RAM issue. However, I can't upgrade the RAM in this machine. Unfortunately.
    Can anyone help?
    Best,
    Susan

    Welcome to the discussions, Basecamp.
What codecs have you used on the output so far? Just the standard ones or have you tried others? Also, have you tried exporting the file when logged in as a different user? (This has seemed to highlight many issues recently)

  • I keep getting "Mail Not Responding" and have to force quit

I can't even get to "Mail Doctor" because the spinning beachball starts up instantly.  I have to force quit to get it to stop.  Mail is working on all my other eight devices but not my primary iMac.  What the heck?

What OS version are you running? If 10.8/9 try the below.
    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.
