Songs appear in grey on itunes screen

When I connect my ipod to the computer and go to iTunes I can see my songs but they are grey and not black. I can't click on any of the songs. I am trying to take the songs off of my ipod and put them back in my library in iTunes. I accidently erased all my song data off of iTunes. Anyway, I can't understand why I can't click on any of my songs on my ipod. Also I have a symbol of a lock at the bottom of my iTunes screen to the right of the available MB bar. Is that showing that my ipod is locked or something? How do I unlock it? I hope someone can help me.
Thanks

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is because your iPod is set to automatically update.
Even if your iPod was set to manually update (and the lock went away and the songs weren't grayed out), you would still not be able to use iTunes to move the songs back onto your computer. If you want to do that...

You made a purchase and exhausted the credit on your card before it processed. All purchases are final. Contact iTunes Store support. You need to settle up before you can purchase or download anything else.

  • My iTunes songs are in grey, My iTunes songs are in grey, My iTunes songs are in grey

I have an iPhone and in the iTunes app many songs are in grey and cannot be played.

I just recently had this happen too.  See how many MB your itunes library on you main computer is, and how much you have available on your iphone.  Thats what my problem was- I had too many apps and photos and other songs already on my iphone and the sings stayed grey on the iphone because they were not fully downloaded because there wasnt enough room. Only songs purchased on my iphone were playable.  To fix this make a playlist of songs you want on your iphone- then with your phone plugged into your computer, select your phone on the left hand side from the list and then once the screen appears that shows your usage space etc, pick the music tab at the top. It will ask you if you want to transfer entire library or selected playlists or artists.  Check off the playlists and artists one and then a box below will appear with all your playlists. Pick whichever one you made and thats it. They will sync and transfer and you will be all set.  A pain in the butt, but its the only thing you can do unless you have more MB available on your phone than whats in your library.  Good Luck.

  • Songs appear on iPod in iTunes, but after disconnected, pod is empty

    HELP HELP HELP
I'm having a very strange issue. I copy songs from my iBook to my iPod, and they appear on the pod in iTunes, but when I disconnect the iPod, the pod says there are no songs on it.
I've tried EVERYTHING!! I reformatted the iBook, restored the iPod, tried different USB port, set up a different user, etc...
The strange thing is, when I use the iPod on my G4 Tower (exact same operating system as the iBook), the songs transfer fine. And when I use an older 3G iPod on the iBook, the songs transfer over fine. It's like the iPod and the iBook just don't get along!!

This Apple knowledge-base article may help address that issue.

  • I dropped my external hard drive which contained my iTunes library and it is no longer readable. I attempted to upload my library from iPod and while all the songs appear to be in iTunes I get a message telling me that the original file can't be located.

I dropped my external hard drive that contained my iTues library and the disk is no longer readable. I figured I would simply transfer my music back from my iPod to my MacBook Pro and it loks like it worked. All the songs are there, but I receive a message that the original file can't be found when I try to play anything. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

    A Couple of questions..
Is the location shown under preferences/Advanced/General still showing the correct location?
Is the check boxes under this checked or unchecked?

  • I upgraded to 8.1 and now my iphone doesn't appear anymore in the itunes screen. I can see the iphone photos on my computer screen but there is nothing where the device used to show up. I can't back up and I can't see how much storage space is occupied.

Does anybody know how I can restore my itunes to recognize my iphone? I updated to Windows 8.1 and now there is no recognition of my iphone as a device in the itines window.

    Hi skippy2012trev,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you updated your Apple Id and password but now you are being prompted for the old information in iCloud. You are on the right track by changing the Apple ID back to the previous email address temporarily so that you can sign out. You should not need to verify the email address. After you edit the Apple ID back to the old email address and then sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, edit the Apple ID back to the address you would currently like to use. There is no need to change the password again, only the email address, unless you prefer to update the password again.
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud - Apple Support
    Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't help, try these steps:
Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
Tap Settings > iCloud. Complete these steps only if the Find My [Device] setting is turned on:
Scroll down and tap Sign Out, then tap Sign Out to confirm. If you're using iOS 7 or earlier, tap Delete Account, then tap Delete to confirm.
Tap Keep on My [Device] or Delete from My [Device]. In either case, your data remains in iCloud and will be updated on your device when you sign in to iCloud again.
Enter the password for your previous Apple ID.
Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
Return to Settings > iCloud and sign in with your new Apple ID.
    Cheers,
    Joe

  • Lock icon at bottom of iTunes screen when iPod connected and selected -grey

I'm a longtime Mac and iPod man trying to get ipod working for friend who has Dell laptop and XP.
Have downloaded and installed latest Windows software for both iPod and laptop.
    Problem
iPod is recognised, but I can do very little with it in iTunes. Items get greyed out, iPod screen often returns to internal menus (that is appears as if iPod is disconnected) and strangest of all (for me ) is that a lock icon appears at bottom of iTunes screen in line where iPod capacity is shown. Have reset iPod, restarted computer, iTunes etc. no change.
Here's the thing - same problem when connected to my iMac G5!
    Any suggestions welcome.

Got my answer from nice chap with a Windows machine!
It was because iPod was in autosync mode which I have never used myself since I have way too much stuff in iTunes.

  • Hi, I bought 2 songs off itunes. I have synced my classic and shuffle with no problems. The new songs show ok in my libary but when i view my iphone 5 in itunes these songs appear greyed out with a ring of dots to the left and will not sync to my iphone?

  • How do you scroll up albums in iTunes 11?  There isn't a scroll bar on the right side.  I know it appears when you minimize the screen, but it is hidden on my machine.  Running Dell XPS 15z i7 w/ Win 7.

In iTunes 11, there is no scroll bar in full page Albums view.  It does appear when you minimize the screen, but on my computer, the scroll is hidden and the resizing of the screen does not work.   Is there a fix?  Also, how do you sort tracks/songs in Album view?  When I import lengthy audiobooks, the inability to sort through hundreds of tracks is really ticking me off.  Again, is there a fix?
Apple...  Before you tell me all the great features in iTunes 11, let me just say they are duly noted.  But, I would rather have the option to do things on my own, rather than being forced to conform to your techies need to be creative.  I don't use Genius or Playlists, so the ability to sort in them is useless to me.

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • Ipod4 syncs music incorrectly with itunes after ios5 update. Playlists list some songs which are greyed out and wont play. Suspect they werent downloaded as Ipod now holds 16 000 songs. Previous max was 9000 songs.

I upgraded to IOS5. Now have synching problems using the USB Cable . I tried everything. Resent the Synch history in ITunes. Unticked all playlists and synched to clear all music etc of the iPod. Reticked items to synch then still have trouble. After it synchs, I see a playlist with some songs in black and some in grey. The black songs play, the grey ones don't. The same songs in iTunes do appear there and will play. I don't have any broken links in my library. Anyone know of a solution.? Synching takes forever and seems to get stuck on importing the pictures for ages. I walk away and next morning it will be finished syncing but with aforementioned problems.

You should send this to Apple.

  • Viewing songs in Ipod from ITunes screen

Hi. I have never had a problem viewing the songs on my Ipod after plugging it in...it just came right up...until now when I updated my iTunes and Ipod from a version 1.1.1 to a 1.3. Now when I try and view what's on my Ipod from my ITunes screen: I click on my Ipod from the ITunes screen, then a screen with tabs such as Summary, Music, Movies, etc... comes up. I then click on Music and I am not able to click on anything. I tried clicking on recently added - nothing. At the top of this tab is a check box next to Sync (which I do not want to do). Any suggestions about how I can view the songs on my Ipod like I used to be able to do? Thanks

Next to the name of the iPod in the source pane should be a grey triangle. if you click on that, you should then see your list of playlists, etc.

  • Song appears in itunes, delete but keeps reappearing

song appears in itunes, delete but keeps reappearing. the song is youth from foxes downloaded from the itunes store for free , even though i delete it from either the ipod 5th generation itself or if i connect it to itunes and delete it from their every time i delete it , it will reappear in itunes if a resync. and theirs two copies of it idk why. i want to delete the song from itunes, i know the song will keep appearing on the ipod because of apples stupid idea trying to make me redownload it. the songs are both shaded in grey. solution plss

Best route here is to focus initially solely on the iTunes Library.  Once it has all the Songs that you want, turn off iTunes Match, sign out of iTunes Store and restart the computer from cold.
Moving to the iPhone would suggest a restore and fresh link to the library post the following steps.
    1.  Sign in to iTunes Store;
    2.  Turn on iTunes Match - allow 3-step process to run to completion;
    3.  Make secure backup of library;
    4.  Force iPhone in to restore mode - hold down 'power on/off' with 'home key' for 10 seconds
    5.  Attach iPhone via USB to computer and follow 'restore' instructions in iTunes
    6.  Once complete synchronise with library as required
At this stage all required Songs should be on the iPhone - post iPhone back-up a good point to fully enable iTunes Match on the iPhone if required.
