Songs are listed twice in itunes

Why are some of my songs showing duplicates in iTunes. Can I just delete one? Which one?

Quick question, do you subscribe to iTunes Match?  The reason I ask is because in my experience if your device is not synced directly to the library in question but music is transferred via synchronization it will double up on the songs in question.  I believe this happens because there are numerous amounts of that same song released on different albums or compilations.  Match pulls the most prevalent title it recognizes from the apple database and installs it on your device not aware that it is the same song in turn creating the duplication.  I've had this problem several times before and it's maddening.  Best thing I found is to keep one main library and make sure all of your mobile devices are fully synced with only that library.  I had three different computers with varying library's all on the same apple ID and the only time I plugged my mobile devices in was when they needed the large system updates which lead to the numerous duplications.  I finally realized this when I noticed the album covers on the duplicates where different as well the version albeit song name was the same.

that is odd! that should not be happening.
Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes.

That is the way the iphone works.
You need to copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.

  • HT1660 My itunes library has automatically started to list my songs alphabetically.  I do not want this.  How do I change it so that when albums come up, the songs are listed in the order of the imported album, NOT alphabetically.

For the missing Artists on your iPod, make sure their tracks in iTunes are not marked as "Part of a compilation" in iTunes. You can do this by highlighting the track, right->clicking on them and choosing "Get Info" from the shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Info tab and make sure there is NO tick mark next to this option in the lower right hand corner. Lastly, sync the updated changes to your iPod.

  • I have two albums (RCA Sweeny Todd 2 discs set and RCA Into the Woods 1 disc) where the songs are listed as being on the same album on the list view, but do not group together on the iPod, so the songs can't play consecutively, or in the proper order.

I have two albums (RCA Sweeny Todd 2 discs set and RCA Into the Woods 1 disc) where the songs are listed as being on the same album on the list view, but do not group together on the iPod, so the songs can't play consecutively, or in the proper order. The "Apply Sort Field" and "Same album does not work, but ti is only these two RCA albums that do this. All other albums remain intact. Need help with this minor problem. Thanks.

UPDATE: This behavior (to an extent) still happens when "Repeat Album" is off. Instead of an infinite loop, it goes through all the tracks on the album (unsuccessfully) and kicks me out to the Album overview screen. Going back to list of Albums and tapping the Album again brings up "No Content: You can download music from the iTunes Store" but that screen immediately kicks me back to list of Albums.
So I am just even more confused now.

  • IPod is showing duplicates of songs, but songs are not duplicated in iTunes.

iPod touch is showing duplicates of songs, but songs are not duplicated in iTunes... any ideas how to fix? Tried resyncing, didn't work.

I'm fishing slightly but you may have casing inconsistenices in artist or album names that cause the iOS firmware to see more than one instance of the album but with each getting all the tracks. Merging stuff in iTunes via sort fields may also have unintended consequenses on the device. Could you post back a screenshot or decribe the symptoms more fully, ie. exactly which menu screen you are in on the iPod, what is repeated etc. The songs menu for example can correctly list more than one copy of a song if it appears on different albums.

  • How can I change the order that my songs are listed in?

Hey. I am not sure what I did, but for some reason, my songs in iTunes are listed fro z-a rather than the other way around. How could I change this???

It's just a matter of clicking/toggling the little triangle at the top of the list of songs. When it points up the songs are listed in standard alphabetical order; when the triangle points down, then they will become "the other way around".
You probably just accidentally clicked the triangular toggle.

  • Everything listed twice in iTunes

You can try this: Exit out of iTunes. Go to your iTunes music folder and look for the iTunes library file (*.itl). Copy that file to a different folder outside of the iTunes folder. Delete the library file in the iTunes folder. Return to the Desktop. Run iTunes. A fresh version of the program will run, and will look a bit alarming because all of your files will appear to have disappeared. Exit iTunes. Go to your iTunes folder and you will see that a new *.itl file has been created. Delete this file. Find the library file that you copied out of this folder and copy it back into the iTunes file folder. Return to the Desktop and run iTunes.
You could also do the above up to the point where you create the new iTunes folder and then import all of your music back into iTunes.
    Good luck.

If they aren't showing in the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app (and the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes) for redownloading then have you checked to see if they are hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919 ?

Do the non-syncing songs play in iTunes?
Were the syncing and non-syncing songs purchased with the same account?
Can you directly download the the songs to the iPod? See:

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Artists are listed twice (but are exactly the same in format)

I have several artists (some examples are Dave Matthews and Pat Green...but there are tons!) that are listed twice in the artist section on my ipod. I made sure they are spelled correctly and I can't figure out any other reason my ipod won't list them one time. Has anyone else run into this problem and if so, how can I make my ipod list artists once? Thanks!

I had this problem too. I came to find that there was a space either before or after the artists name. Obviously you cant see a space so they will look normal. Check it out, this may be the problem

  • Version 4.0.0.12 (EA) - functional indexes of a table are listed twice

    Hello,
it seems that functional indexes are listed twice if there are two functions within the index columns.....
Example (Content from the indexes tab of the table view):
owner    ....._PK    UNIQUE    VALID    NORMAL    N    NO
    NO    ....._UUID
    owner    ....._UI1    UNIQUE    VALID    FUNCTION-BASED NORMAL    N    NO    ENABLED    NO    SYS_NC00016$, SYS_NC00017$, ....._ID, ....._PLAN_ID    SYS_EXTRACT_UTC("....._START")
    owner    ....._UI1    UNIQUE    VALID    FUNCTION-BASED NORMAL    N    NO    ENABLED    NO    SYS_NC00016$, SYS_NC00017$, ....._ID, ....._PLAN_ID    SYS_EXTRACT_UTC("....._END")
Both functions are in the same index "....._UI1".
The detail panel shows the same details.

    What version of SQL*Developer?
I am using 3.2.20.09 and created 2 function-based indexes on a practice employee table, upper() on both first and last names.  When displaying indexes through the table display using the Indexes tab and through the object navigator using indexes I only see each index once.
On a second pass I created a third composite index with upper on both first and last names and got the results similar to those you describe in both places.  The column names (expression name in the table index pane) were different.
