Songs double up in Library

It's as simple as this. I have an album in the library. Why is it when I double click one of those songs in the finder it re-enters itself in the Library, under the already existing song?
Thanks, Steve

Here are some scenarios that I think I have right in my head. (which seems to mean nothing anymore.
If the music exists in your music folder and in your library, and the preference is set to copy to the music folder, when you double click a song on the desktop, nothing is modified.
I think you'll get a dupe...
The music on the desktop acts like an alias.
iTunes has no reference to this file you click, so copies, adds & plays
The music is already in the music folder and indexed in the library, so iTunes plays this copy.
The copy gets a modified name, <Song> 1.<ext>, because one of the same name already exists in the appropriate folder.
If the music exists in your music folder and in your library and the preference to copy music is deselected, the library will add indexing to the desktop song, duplicating an entry. Each library entry is indexed to a different location.
Yes, a duplicate will be created, once, repeated double-dlicking on the desktop copy won't create further copies unlike the scenario above.
If the music is not in the library or your music folder and the preference is set to copy to the music folder, double clicking a song on the desktop will add it to the music folder and the song will be added to the library, which will index to the music folder. The desktop song will now act like an alias.
No, the presence of the copy on the desktop is not recorded in the library. Double-clicking on it again will create a duplicate.
If the music is not in the library or your music folder and the preference to copy music is deselected, double clicking a song on the desktop will result in the library being updated and indexed to the desktop.
Yes. There will be one copy. Double-clicking later will not create a duplicate.
What you can't do is play something in iTunes without the library indexing to it. (I think)
Agreed.
At least that's how I think it works... If all else fails we'll have to experiment.

  • When I double click on a song in my iTunes Library i receive the following: the song "....." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?

    Greetings all
When i double click on a song in my iTunes library the following appears:
The song "......" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?
    Hope you can help
    revds

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • How do I use a song in my iTunes library to record with in garage band on my iPhone?

How do I use a song in my iTunes library to record with in garage band on my iPhone? Like music from my library I want to use invGarageBand to record over.

    Short answer:
Click Hide Song(s), it is what you wanted to do...
    Long answer:
iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

  • How can I find the total number of songs in my iTunes library?

I just downloaded the new itunes.  In the previous itune library at the bottom of the screen it told me how many songs I have total.  Not just purchased, but how many total songs were in my library.  I liked knowing this because I could verify my ipod was synced up properly.  Sometimes a song wouldn't download from my computer to my ipod, and by knowing how many songs were in the library, it was a double check.
This song count is gone now with this new itune version.  There no bar at the bottom of my screen that shows me song count and I've gone through all the settings and can't figure out how to know this without manually counting the songs.  Any help is appreciated.

    Dear,
In the top menu, you can choose 'view', and subsequently 'show status bar'. This shows the information on the bottom of the window.
    kindest regards,

  • How to keep copies in double in the library through iCloud?

  • Itunes copies every song double in Finder!

Finder has double the size of GB of what Itunes states. Every song is being copied (sometimes 4 times!!) and sometimes stored in a different place . Since I have thousands of songs it is virtually impossible to look for every song and delete it. Is there an easy way and how do I prevent it making copies?!!
    HELP!!!

I have already tried that. When I first downloaded iTunes to my new computer, it asked if I wanted to import all my music. I said "yes" and it went through about 5 hours of converting music, and when it was done, my iTunes library listed all my songs atleast twice.
So I deleted the iTunes music folder (so when I opened up iTunes, it didn't list ANY songs in my library). I made sure the box that gave me the option to copy songs into iTunes library, was NOT checked. I then went to My Music, selected the files, and dragged them to the iTunes music folder. Once again it went through hours of a conversion process and then listed each song at least twice in the iTunes library.
Is my mistake that I am copying my songs to the iTunes library? If I'm not supposed to do that, how do I get music into the iTunes library? This is the 3rd or 4th new computer I've installed iTunes on in the last 4-5 years and I've never had a problem like this before.... it's getting frustrating!

  • How do I transfer songs from one iTunes library to another?

My husband and I each have our own iBook G4 and iPod mini's. I need to get songs from his itunes library (mostly downloaded from cd's) to mine so that I can put together a playlist for his surprise 50th birthday party. What's the easiest and quickest way of doing this?

    Hi, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I think that the fastest way is:
    - connect the 2 iBooks using the Airport Extreme Card or the Ethernet
    - open finder then select network and select the remote computer
    - open iTunes, select your tracks and then drag them into the shared folder... that's it! You have just transfered your music to the other iBook and now you can create your playlist using iTunes.
If you don't know how to create a private network or something else, post another message... bye!

    Hi there,
It sounds like you may need to hide these purchases in the iTunes Store in order to prevent them from displaying on the Apple TV. Take a look at the article below for more information.

  • ITunes moving songs to wrong iTunes Library Folder

    Hi All,
Just upgraded to 10.1. I have my iTunes library on an external drive. Upon upgrade to 10.1 iTunes created a new iTunes Library Folder on my internal drive (/iTunes Library/Music) and moved 103 of my 8000 songs into that new folder. I've never had or needed that folder before. I have iTunes set to both manage my library and copy songs to my iTunes music folder (correctly points to the external drive in iTunes). So every time I try to add these 103 songs to iTunes, they do not get copied to my external drive library folder, they get re-copied into the internal disk folder that iTunes creates and iTunes will not play them (get the exclamation point). Even if I try to trash the internal iTunes Library folder, iTunes just automatically recreates it and adds those same 103 songs back in. If I copy/paste the songs into the external library and add them to iTunes - iTunes moves them back to the internal drive and will not play them! Some of the songs are purchased from iTunes, some are not. Only 1 song is DRM protected and some but not all songs are iTunes plus upgraded songs.
Anyone have any idea why iTunes might be behaving this way only with those 103 songs?
    Thanks!

    A Espinoza,
The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities.  So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

I lost all my ipod songs when my mom plugged her exact same ipod (5th generation nano) into my computer. She did not get my songs on hers but somehow I lost mine. I tried the five R's and evrything I could find online. I cannot get the songs from my iTunes library back on my ipod. I get a message that says. "Gina's ipod cannot be restored because it is being used in another application." Please help me

Why do you need to restore your iPod to resync your content back over to it from your iTunes library? You should just be able to configure the content to sync to your device as you did before this problem occurred.
