Songs not found

what does it mean when a pop up box appears with the following message:
"...some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to the ipod because they could not be found"????
The songs are in my library!! How can I fix this?

Hi, Jeff.
The exclamation marks (and the accompanying note) inidicate the files aren't located where iTunes expects them to be. This most often happens when the files have been deleted, renamed or moved to a different location than where iTunes expects them to be.
If the files are still on your computer but have been moved, the best solution is to get them back where they were in the first place. iTunes will be able to find them again - happy ending.
Sometimes though, it seems iTunes loses track of files for no apparent reason. In that case, other than telling iTunes where they are on a one by one basis, your only other option is to start with a new iTunes library. Regrettably, this method will lose your playlists and related information (Ratings, Play Counts, Dates Last Played, etc.).
If that's not a deal-breaker for you, delete the current entries in your Library by highlighting them - iTunes File menu > Select All - and then right-clicking > Delete . You remove the entries from your Library but keep the files themselves in your iTunes Music folder, assuming that's where they are in the first place.
You can then add them back into your Library by selecting the iTunes Music folder in Windows Explorer and dragging it into the Library entry in the iTunes Source List (left-hand column).

  • Some songs not found in same album, same directory!

But I can "add file" no problem. This happens whenever I move the music directory or move the directory (I am careful to copy the directory exactly).
So, what is happening in Itunes that some songs are simply not found, although nothing has "relatively" changed except the path? I give it the new path and update the directory.
The downer is that yes you can delete and re-add but you lose all your hard work on the rating system.
    Anybody figure all this out?

One way is to select all the tracks and set them to be part of a Compilation (Get Info on all the tracks, then go to the Options tab). The album will then show in the Compilations in the Artists column of the Browser and not under a bunch of artists.
Or you can edit the Artist or Album Artist field so that the information is the same for all tracks. Compilations is probably the most common method for soundtrack albums and such, though.
    Regards.

  • Song Not Found on PC, exists on iPod -- How to Transfer to PC?

Every time I sync I get a message saying there's a song that was not found, and couldn't be synced. That song exists and is fine on the iPod. How can I get that song back to the PC?
    Thanks!

I had a similar problem with several songs on my nano. In the end, the only way it could find of getting a song off the nano and back into my library was to buy 'Xilisoft ipod rip' software.
I found it online and didn't think it was too expensive, and it worked well.

  • My itunes keeps saying song not found

when i try to sync my music to my ipod shuffle from my itunes it says song not found

Are you able to play that song in iTunes (on the computer)?  That usually means iTunes can no longer find the song's file, where it was previously stored.

  • What can I do about songs not found on computer?

I had a zune subscription that I cancelled.  I deleted the songs that I got for free, then I bought them from iTunes.  They appear in the purchased section, but are not on my computer.  I get a message stating that the location can't be found.

  • Song Not found

I have had to delete and reload my entire song-list to iTunes about 7 times now. Randomly, about half of the songs on my iTunes always get that little exclamation point thing next to them and says the song could not be found, and I always have to re-find them. So since it's just impossibly painstaking for me to do that for every single song, I end up deleting and reloading them all over again.
WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING!! Its not like I am changing the location of my songs everyday, they're always in the same place. This is starting to get very very frustrating.

Did he move any folders around in Windows Explorer? Are the songs stored on an external hard drive where perhaps the drive letter changed?
For whatever reason, the itunes database ITL file can't "see" the song files.
Are they still on the PC?

  • ITune songs not found after migrating to new iMac

My old iMac's graphics card broke. Luckily I have used Time Machine to back up to ann external HDD.
I used Migration Assistant to bring up the new iMac. However, I cannot find any songs in iTune. The songs can still be found in my iPhone though.
I also found that Time Machine has set up a new folder in the external HDD, so while the old backup files are still there, I cannot access it when I tried to restore it.
    Need help.
Since this is a new, clean installation, I don't mind reinstalling the OS X, which I have done, if it helps.

    There is no Music folder.
Perhaps I should try to start from a clean slate again. Do you think it will make sense to wipe out all the data and re-install OSX, re-migrate? There will not be any lost data (compared to what I have now..)
When I re-installed OSX, I had to state a name. I chose the name on the previous computer, which led to a conflict when I tried to migrate. I had to choose another name for the new iMac. Could this have led to the inability to restore properly? (am I making sense?)

  • Huge problem with songs not found in iTunes and duplicates

I have been having serious issues with itunes -- it recently started losing files. I get the message, "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I have tried manually linking them, but I have thousands of files and it would take forever.
I ended up reinstalling itunes and re-adding all music, but I lost my playlists. I then found an old itunes music file and put it in the itunes folder and voila! -- all of my playlists returned.
Now the problem is that I have many missing files and almost every remaining song has been duplicated at least once. (I think I screwed up by first importing songs and then having to add them to the library as well).
Is there a way to group together all the files (to find them later) and then delete them? There are thousands of them. Also, is there a way to stop this random deleting of files. It seems this is a widespread problem. Thanks.

    Arghhhhhhhhh
    Count me in -
At the moment I've lost access to roughly 800 of the 1200 .mp3s that are sitting in my iTunes music folder ("iTunes cannot find the file. Would you like to try and locate it?").
This appears to have occurred after downloading the 7.1.1 update today. One additional symptom that I'm getting that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere is that the .mp3s themselves seem to be corrupted - when I open them directly with iTunes they are playing a strange combination of the same two songs, and I can't open them at all in any other application (Quicktime, Bias Peak etc...) which is really wrong.
I've done everything that I've seen suggested here and then some, including repairing my disk and permissions from a Tiger install disk several times, reinstalling iTunes, rebuilding the iTunes Library and running a bunch of third party maintenance and repair routines, all to no avail,

  • Some songs "Not Found"

Had to do a complete re-install of 10.5.6 last month (long story).
Brought over my iTunes Library & Preferences from back-up. All seemed fine. There are all my tunes & cover art. Things working well.
After a few weeks, I noticed that some songs I clicked to play would get an exclamation point at the beginning, and I'd get an alert dialogue saying "iTunes cannot find the song ______. Would you like to find it?", or something to that effect. I can easily navigate to the library of songs, click on the song, and tune is reconnected.
What I cannot figure out is how to re-link an entire CD without doing each track individually (a pain). Or is there a way to re-link all the errant tracks?
This seems to only affect tunes burned from CD, not my iTunes downloads. And even then, not all the CD burns. At this point, I've gone through most of the A-C albums, re-linking by hand.
A shortcut (without looking my play count) would be appreciated.
    Cheers!

This might be a good thread to watch. there are others with this problem too and have not done a re-install:

I've been trying to locate my lost song files on my computer and in my iTunes purchased library. However, when I try to go through itunes purchased to redownload prevously purchased songs, it says they have all been downloaded to my computer. These are the songs that show up with a small "i" in a circle in my library. I click to "locate" but cannot find them anywhere. How can I find them and/or re-download these songs?

Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks.  When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file.  If something breaks this link then you get !  The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether.  I don't know which has happened in your case.  You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link.  If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back.  If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

  • Moving iPod to new PC.  Songs not found.  iTunes doesn't recognize iPod

Actually, it is a new Windows install on the same machine it used to be on. We have a recent back up the iTunes folder but the total size of that is about 900mb. There is about 9mb of content on the iPod though. iTunes doesn't find music and opening the itml.xml file from MD\MM\iTunes shows paths for "unfindable" music being things like:
    C:/Ipod/F05/Nickelback%20-%20How%20you%20remind.mp3
Stuff purchased on iTunes still plays after re-authorization since we just copied the iTunes folder back over in to the new machine.
Keeping the play lists is very important.
    Questions:
    1) How do we get the new "machine" to recognize the ipod as being associated with this one instead of the old install?
    2) How do we pull the music that iTunes in Windows doesn't see anymore back off the iPod and in to the places on the hard drive where iTunes is looking for files?

No, first of all i've got a MacBook not with dual core
I suspect an error with the connection type 'cause at work i receive this kind of problem and at home not.
I solved the problem with the ipod updater yesterday, at home i successfully updated it but today i get a new error message while contacting itunes server:
I cannot process the request, an unknown error occurred on itunes server (error type -206)!
Do you know why?may it depend by the Office server?

  • Error messages on songs in itunes/match relating to files not found.

I subscribe to itunes match. When highlighting certain songs in itunes where a cloud symbol has appeared next to them, I get the following message "the song................could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" If I press the locate button it takes me to windows file search screen, but if I cancel it finds the song and an arrow appears at the base of the cloud symbol. If I click this the whole cloud symbol eventually disappears and problem seems resolved. ie it plays when highlighted and can be dragged and dropped onto my ipod. On other songs the cloud symbol appears next to them but with an exclamation mark in it and "Error" in the icloud status column (Whereas "matched" appears next to the others). I get the same message as before and if I cancel the song is found. The difference is that when I click on the cloud symbol, I get the message "The item was not added to the iCloud as an error occurred", the exclamation mark reappears, "error" remains in the icloud status column and I have to go through the whole process again if I high light the song again. I cannot drag it onto my ipod.
I manually manage my music and am preparing to revert to syncing. I have many playlists in itunes and looking through them there is a scattering of these cloud symbols throughout against random songs. The clear symbols I can alter as above (though it will take ages) but the ones with the - ! - mark in the cloud symbol next to them will not (I think) sync and go over to my ipod. I have in excess of 10,000 songs - 99.9% from my cd collection. Itunes match appears to have created havoc with them and it is frustrating not to be able to access songs that are originally mine.
I hope this is clear and can anyone help please?

First, you need to let the inital scan, match and upload process in iTunes complete before you enable the service on your iOS devices. This is the best practice. Once the initial scan is complete then all the music will be availabe on the iOS devices.
Second, in Song view in iTunes enable the iCloud Status column so you can see how the service has classified all the music in your library. If successfully processed all the tracks shoud be either "purchased," "matched," or "uploaded." Any other status indicates a problem with that track that will need to be sorted out, and it won't be availble on the iOS devices.
Third, be patient with the artwork. It can take some time for all the artwork to download to the iOS devices. It isn't instant. But eventually all the artwork will show up.
