Songs randomly deleted

First, let me get to config info so you don't need to ask:
My Itunes Music Folder sits an and external drive, and I've told iTunes to copy files to the folder and to keep things organized. They HD has been verified and used only as a library for Itunes.
Running the latest version, but this happened on earlier versions too, just not as often.
Lately, I've noticed some random songs disappearing. Now new ones go as soon as they are added.
Let me be clear, this is not (strictly) a  database issue.
It is actually creepy to watch:
I add songs to the library, and keep a Finder window open at the destination point. I can see the files flow in, and then vanish as soon as the last one is added. Meanwhile, Itunes adds them in the Music window, and then the grey exclamation points follow suit.
They do not go to the Trash, they simply vanish. Yes, the mp3 files themselves. As soon as they are added. Older files will vanish as they play. It plays the track, keeps the file in RAM (I guess) but the file has already been dumped.
(Many people mistake iTunes losing track of songs as deleting them. I am not one of those people. I wish I was).
I've tried creating a new library file, and it doesn't help. I've dumped all the Library (database) files, playlists etc (backed up first!) and no go either. Checked and unchecked for it to copy the files or reorganized. If I uncheck "copy the files" it doesn't seem to delete them, but I don't have much confidence that my 25,000 song library will survive any new attempts.
ANYONE have any ideas?

I have the same issue https://discussions.apple.com/message/17339930#17339930

  • All songs randomly deleted

So I have a 30 gig video ipod, and I have a bad habit of leaving it plugged in to the computer, and without ejecting it, allowing the computer to go to sleep. Normally this doesn't cause any problems, however the other day I came back to my computer and went to check my itunes and I found all the songs had been deleted off my ipod. I have about 7 gigs of music on it, no movies or anything else. So I was able to replace about the 2 gigs which I had in my library, but I lost the rest since it belonged to an itunes library on a no longer working computer. The interesting thing though is now I have about 5 gigs of space being used up listed as "Other". Does this mean all my songs are still on there? If so, how do I get them?

okay i looked further into it and i think that this post will help immensely. I myself havent tried it yet, but it seems to be what has happened. hope this works for you!!

  • Songs are randomly deleting off my iphone but are still on my itunes library on my computer...and wont sync to my phone even though they are selected to..HELP!

I only have a portion of songs from my itunes library selected to synch to my iphone 5 (35 songs from one artist).  They have always been on my phone without issue, even after updating to the ios7.  Just last night however, about half of those songs randomly deleted.....now only 15 of those songs are appearing on my iphone.  I tried deselecting that artist when synching my phone to itunes to wipe the songs off completely, and then reselecting that artist's songs to synch to my phone, but again only the 15 songs would show up after the synch.  Long story short, all 35 songs are still available in my itunes library, yet only 15 of the songs will synch with my phone.  I have never had this problem, even after synching new songs from that artist to my phone when synching it with itunes.  Dont know if this has something to do with ios7.....if somebody could help me out I would greatly appreciate it!

I forgot to mention that when I look at the playlist that has been tranferred to the iPhone all the ones that won't play and are greyed out have a sync symbol next to the check mark.

  • Randomly deleting music

I set up iTunes match just fine on my Mac and iPhone 4s. Everything was perfect until I decided to resurrect my pc. What's started happening is music and tones randomly deletes from the pc and iPhone but not the Mac. Making a pain in my you know what constantly trying to sync.  I've reinstalled windows and iOS 5 onthe iPhone too. And yes I know about the one library rule. Im trying to merge them. It seemed to work for 2 days.  Any ideas.

Suggest using the Kind, iCloud Status and iCloud Download fields in your library view determine exactly what is happening.  iTunes Match is designed for 'music', focusing solely on this you are indicating that on both your Windows PC and your iPhone that Songs "randomly delete"?
Using the same Apple Id on the Computers iTunes Match will simply make all your Songs accessible from iCloud following successful completion of the 3-step process involved when you first turn on the service.  For your iPhone, Song files will be downloaded as the Songs are played.
As noted above, there is no mechanism for iTunes Match to delete Song files from your Computer - indeed to download a Song from the iCloud you have to manually delete the Song if it exists in your local library.
What versions of Windows and MacOS are you running?

  • Songs that are imported manually from cds or flash drives are randomly deleting from my iphone 5. Sometimes I get an error -54 message first. Sometimes not. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

I have an iPhone 5 16g ios 8.2 and it keeps randomly deleting the songs I manually put on from cds or flash drives. The songs I purchased from iTunes don't delete just the ones I manually add. It has happened three times, once after I added 399 songs, once after I added 27 songs and once when I added 45 songs. Sometimes an error (-54) pops up but not always, it's just in an instant all the songs I put on are suddenly gone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes three times, reset all the settings on my phone and also restored my phone to factory settings. Nothing has worked. I have a 4th generation iPod and I have never had this problem. Any and all suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions..
My first suggestion is to Repair Disk. Here's how:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back and let me know how that goes.

  • My iTunes keeps randomly deleting songs.

I know it isn't because it's full, I don't have enough for that to be the problem, but over time I go to look for a song I know I purchased and it's missing from my library. When I go to the store to find the song or album, it asks me to buy it again as if i never had. It's driving me crazy and I don't want to keep paying for music twice. Help!

I estimate iTunes really randomly deleting files and the iTunes Store really completely forgetting you ever purchased an item at about my chances as winning the lottery (for which I never buy tickets).
Do you have more than one AppleID?  You cannot merge AppleIDs and items purchased with one will remain permanently associated with that ID, thereby not appearing in the Store as purchased if you log on with a different ID.

  • ITunes randomly deletes songs or whole albums

I've been having this problem for quite some time now, maybe a year..I just thought I was misplacing the songs at first. However now I know for a fact that iTunes is randomly deleting entire albums. How can I stop this? I've thought about locking the folder, but then I probably wouldn't be able to update stuff as well.
Its extremely annoying because some albums are burns of physical discs and some are ones that I bought online. The physical are OK because I can just grab the original disc, but the ones I bought online I have to repurchase them.
Will taking off iTunes folder management work? Do I need to reinstall something?

This is weird in that when you intentionally delete something by selecting it and hitting 'delete' you get the choice to 'Cancel' vs. 'Keep Files' vs. 'Move to Trash' with note in box that only files in the iTunes music folder can be moved to the trash - so it should not be possible for iTunes to completely trash anything.
The only thing I can think of to check is to be certain in Preferences > Advanced both 'Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized' and 'Copy files to iTunes folder.." are checked (from your first post it looks like they are). If they are not, it is possible that you imported a song in another folder which was not copied into your iTunes folder, that is that you created a link to it but then accidently deleted the original. Of course, if you imported the physical CD using iTunes to rip it this wouldn't make sense. I would recommend making a backup of all music that you buy, but of course that doesn't answer the 'Why' question. -Bob

  • Random purchased songs being deleted from my phone?

I keep noticing a lot of different songs from different albums (purchased from iTunes) keep deleting themselves from my phone? I'm tired of having to go through and redownloading, so how can I solve this? Thanks!

I will try to play a song  on my iPhone 5 when suddenly the phone will rapidly shuffle through a bunch of songs and delete them in the process. I will be able to see which songs are deleted because they will be visible in the library with a lighter font and have a "stop" symbol next to them. The songs become unplayable. It is very annoying. Please fix this apple.

  • ITunes randomly deleting content - the "!" shows beside them, but they are not where iTunes says they are

Hi - I find that iTunes has been randomly deleting some content (movies or songs) from my library.  I'll go to play something and it will have an exclamation point beside it.  Sometimes if I "Get Info" and locate the file, it will be there, and then play fine.  But sometimes it is completely gone from the library (still listed with an exclamation point, but not in the file folder it was stored in).  In that case, the location in the "get info" window shows as:
    file://localhost/Users/Username/.Trash/iTunes Media/Movies/Movie Title/Movie Title.m4v
Even if I view hidden files, I cannot find that folder location to move the content.  The content is also not in the Trash, nor on the extrernal hard drive any more.
NO idea why this is happening, and can't figure out a pattern.  Is anyone else having this issue, and/or found a solution?
As background, I'm on a MacBook Pro (2011), running OSX Lion.  I sync an iPhone and an iPad2 to the iTunes library.  iTunes is set to manage files automatically.  The library is stored on an external hard drive accessed through a Time Machine.
Thanks to anyone that can help!

    file://localhost/Users/Username/.Trash/iTunes Media/Movies/Movie Title/Movie Title.m4v
But that file location is your System Trash -  you seem to have a problem with the permissions on your Trashes, either in your system Trash or the hidden Trash bin on your external drive.
See if any hints in this document help to locate the trash on your external drive:
         Solving Trash Problems: http://thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
The library is stored on an external hard drive accessed through a Time Machine.
Do you mean your Library is stored on a network volume (Time Capsule)? Then network problems may be the reason for your dead tracks.

  • How to find out what songs I deleted – from a playlist?

    Hi all, random question...
I have have been culling music from the "Songs" section my iTunes and sending them to the Trash.
HOWEVER the songs that are on one of my playlists, "My Favorites", I really wanted to keep. There were about 200 songs on the playlist and after I finished culling music, I discovered that I had 180 and had accidentally sent about 20 songs to the Trash that I shouldn't have. Argh.
Is there any way to retrive a copy of that playlist from Time Machine, or something, and see which songs I deleted from that playlist. And then drag those 20 songs back from the Trash? I don't want to drag back all the songs I trashed – just the 20 that were part of that playlist.
    Any ideas???

I would also recommend leaving the shot on the iphone untouched (downloaded to a PC is ok). There is EXIF information encoded inside the image that records the iphone's date/time (this is in addition to the file system information that the other poster I beleive is referring to). It is also changeable, though one needs more expertise to do so. The reason I recommend leaving it there is some techniques of getting shots off of cameras (i.e. phones) may remove that info or alter it.
But how does the date/time matter -- clearly the event had occurred, how will a shot after it occurred indicate which came first, your care or her's?

  • ITunes randomly deletes music

I have a Windows Vista computer with iTunes 8.0.1.11.
I have noticed that iTunes randomly deletes music from my computer, i know this because, i have a mac with the same music library and there is music on my mac which is gone from my windows computer.
The file is not in the music folder, and it doesn't appear anywhere on iTunes. There isn't a notice that says, file cannot be found, it is just completley gone. I do the same updates on both computers, so it can't be that.
Why is iTunes deleting music ?
    Thanks

This has been happening to my wife's itunes library as well. First I had it set to use the existing folders of music on her laptop. Then it started deleting the original music files at random. Some were songs that she had for a long time and are nearly irreplacable. So I smartened up since Itunes is kind of a crappy software and had it just copy all imported songs into the itunes folder (keeping the itunes library seperate from the original files). Even though this is basicly using twice the space, it is a sacrifice that I must make in order to compensate for really bad coding.
Now, everything was fine for a while. Last night she updated to the 2.1 itouch software and everything seemed to go fine. This morning, she added a few more folders to the itunes library (again it should be copying the music to the itunes folder). But low and behold, she starts itunes and it deleted a bunch of music from her library. Thank gawd I had it not manage her original files as I would be throwing the ipod through the wall if it had.
This is very frustrating (among other issues which I will post in a new thread). Apple needs to give us an answer as to why itunes is behaving like this.

  • Iphone 5c randomly deleting music. help appreciated.

So yeah music is randomly being deleted from my phone. I have 18gb of storage left so I'm sure it's not that. But I can redownload the songs from Icloud. But they will just delete again. I re-downloaded some songs earlier that I never deleted in the first place which put my song count to 486. I check my song count an hour later and it's at 483. This is where it's starting to anger me. I have to switch on "show all music" and literally search for what songs got deleted and redownload them. This has been happening for a few days now. Iphone 5c on 7.1 btw.

I'm not sure it will help, but you might try going to Settings>iTunes & App Store, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in.  See if that stops it.  (This isn't related to your iCloud account.  This is "iTunes in the Cloud" which is a separate service tied to your iTunes ID; although you may be using the same ID for both iTunes and iCloud.)

  • IPhone 6+ randomly deleting direct music downloads

HI guys. My iPhone 6+ is randomly deleting songs - if I download a song on iTunes on my laptop and sync to the phone, it's fine, it stays on the phone. But when I use the iTunes app to download music direct to the phone, it appears and can be played. But as soon as I restart the device, the directly downloaded songs have vanished, and need to be redownloaded. Every time. The iOS is up to date, can anyone provide a fix please?
