Songs skipping on playback

Hi
Since I've updated to the latest Itunes update I have found that songs that i've download from Itunes when playing back on laptop, sound bar or burned to CD some of the songs are skipping/stuttering. I 'm sure on the update there was also an update to stop this but it doesn't seemed to have worked. Any suggestions please. Thanks

Possible remedies:
Check that you have the most recent version of iTunes (12.1.1.4 - released Feb. 18).  The previous release (12.1.0.71) was widely reported to have significant playback issues, varying from "static" and stuttering to complete lack of output.  The 12.1.1.4 release seems to fix most of these issues, in some cases in conjunction with the points below.
Check the setting of Play Audio Using in Edit > Preferences > Playback (you'll have to restart iTunes for changes to take effect).  iTunes 12.1 sometimes defaults this to "Windows Audio Session" rather than "Direct Sound" where (for most users) the latter works better.  In some cases, the 64-bit version of 12.1.0.71 did not have the Direct Sound option available, particularly with Windows 8.
Check that you have the latest version of QuickTime (7.7.6) installed.  Several people have encountered issues if QuickTime is out of date or has not been installed.  This issue seems to affect Bluetooth audio devices though may not be exclusive to these.
There's an alternative installer here: iTunes 12.1.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards) - some users have reported that installing this has addressed playback issues in the "standard" 64-bit version.  The "for older video cards" is a something a misnomer - like most prior "64-bit" releases of iTunes, this is a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "standard" 64-bit version (12.1 and 12.1.1) is a full 64-bit application, but there appear to be a small number of possible incompatibilities between these and some 64-bit Windows systems.

  • Song Skipping in Playback on Itunes

I am running v7.5 and my songs stutter and skip in playback on itunes. They are perfectly fine on my IPOD. I have read only items on the net about there being an issue with Quicktime but the solutions all refer to a much older version of QT. Anybody having this problem?

Make sure that you don't have the "shuffle" icon on below the iTunes source pane.

I purchased a Studio One collection of early Bob Marley stuff and one of the tracks skips. My friend went through his library but doesn't have it so he found it as a preview on the itunes store and it skipped there too. Is there any kind of policy for these issues?

  • Songs skip ahead half way through playback

I have added new smart playlists to my macbook playlist in iTunes... these songs are from my music library and show the full play time for eacj song, however during playback the songs play for approximately 60 seconds then forward or skip to the next song... Any suggestions?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past purchases, delete the current copies from your iTunes library then use the Purchased link in the right-hand column of the iTunes Store home page to download fresh copies of the tracks.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not available in your region contact the iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history.

  • Why is iTunes skipping through songs during computer playback?

Over the past couple months, after adding new files to iTunes, when I'm listening to them on my computer, it will sometimes arbitrarily skip the next song. Each song skips at a different place, but it's always the same places every time I replay the tracks. When I listen to them in Windows Media Player, they play all the way through. I know it's not an issue of file corruption. What can I do about this?

    Hi LD,
Take a look at the article below and try playing the tracks in Safe Mode. If you no longer hear the playback issue, you may be able to resolve the issue by removing outdated 3rd-party plug-ins as suggested below.
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3430
There are several ways an add-on can cause iTunes to act erratically, such as those listed below:
Loss of iTunes functionality, such as the Visualizer
Distortion or irregularity in the iTunes interface
    Slow performance
iTunes won't open or quits unexpectedly
You see this alert while syncing: "... cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
If you see the above symptoms or other unusual behavior, you can disable any third-party plug-ins by opening iTunes in Safe Mode:
    OS X: Hold down Option-Command.
Windows: Hold down Shift-Control while opening iTunes.
You should see this message before iTunes starts up: "iTunes is running in Safe Mode. Visual plug-ins you have installed have been temporarily disabled."Note: This is different than Safe Boot or Safe Mode for Mac OS X. You may need to test both at the same time to isolate all third-party interference.Click Continue and see if any issues persist. If your issues are resolved with iTunes running in Safe Mode, check the following:
Consult the vendor of any plug-ins you installed to see if they're compatible with your version of iTunes and check for any updates that may be available.
Close iTunes and move third-party add-ons to the Desktop to troubleshoot the behavior. iTunes stores these plug-ins and scripts in these locations:
    Mac: /Users/username/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/
    /Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins/

  • Songs skip on burned CD's

My first song alway plays clearly. The remaining songs skip constantly making them unlistenable

I have the same issue of iTunes-source songs skipping on CDs played in CD players rather than on DVD/CD players. I'm going to give this Discussions route a fair shot before I file a complaint with American Express so I can get my money back. (This and a couple of other threads establish that this is a common problem that has been brought to Apple's attention. I've also called Apple and e-mailed them, both to no avail.) Here's (1) a description of my problem and (2) the technical data I've seen requested from others:
    (1) Problem Description: I have a CD/DVD burner on my Dell computer. I purchased $59.04 in tunes from iTunes and burned some of them to 2 CDs. When I try to play the CDs in some CD players, tracks 1 and 2 of both disks play OK, but beyond that, the songs begin skipping. By the time you hit track 5, the skipping is so bad that there is no playback at all. However, these 2 CDs will play perfectly on players that are also DVD players. The problem is with playback on mere CD players. Thus, neither will play back in car CD players, which is a problem since I purchased most of these songs for the purpose of making CDs and giving them as Christmas gifts. (Needless to say, the gifts were a bit of an embarrassment, a dud.) Following some suggestions on the Apple site, I updated my version of iTunes. I also tested my burner by burning a copy of a commercial CD that I bought from a music store down the street. To do this, I used some Windows software. I can play this "test CD" on any player, even in a car CD player. Thus, my burner is not restricting me to playing burned CDs only on DVD/CD players. The limitation seems to be coming from the iTunes software. Does anyone have any idea why I can't play the 2 iTunes-source CDs on a car (i.e., non-DVD) CD player? Are there some iTunes software settings in the burning process that I need to change?

  • Skipping on playback

I've imported about 3 minutes of video into iMovie HD and arranged the clips how I want them. There's no blank clips in between, but both audio and video are skipping on playback. I thought it was just in iMovie, but when I burned it to iDVD, it does the same thing when I playback on my DVD player. How do I smooth transitions from one clip to another? This was 3 minutes of continuous film exported from a Sony digital camcorder.

Cathy, it's not entirely clear from your note whether the playback problem occurs ONLY at the transitions or other places too. If only at the transitions, is it one particular kind of transition? Does the problem go away when you remove the transition?
    • Can you export the iMovie project successfully to a Full Quality movie that plays as it should? If so, that may offer a solution. You could export the project to a Full Quality movie that you open and play in QuickTime Player. If it plays okay, then import that movie to a NEW iMovie project. It should continue to play fine. Then share the new project with iDVD.
    • If the Full Quality export is okay, that may suggest that your iMac doesn't have the RAM it needs to work comfortably with this project. If your iMac has just 256 MB of RAM that may be the underlying problem. Although it may satisfy iMovie's official requirements it may not work well for all projects. You may want to consider adding more RAM. 256 MB is very, very small. Everything on your iMac will probably run better with more RAM.
    • Have you added any iTunes songs to your iMovie project? Some songs can cause exactly the audio/video symptoms you describe. If you have added iTunes songs you may want to try replacing them with new copies you have burned to an Audio CD.
For that solution to work, it's crucial you first configure your iTunes preferences to burn the Audio CD correctly, as described here:

    • Any iMovie project, regardless of length, can develop a stutter if it contains lots of audio clips. That problem is described here:

  • Songs skip BADLY on iTunes w/ other programs

Guys, I just got an iPod recently and so have begun using iTunes instead of windows media player out of neccessity. I have one major problem with it: songs skip very badly when using other programs. This ranges from high performance games to simply surfing the internet with firefox. Basically I can only listen to songs when not using the computer for anything else or suffer the consequences. I cant imagine this happens to everyone or no one would use the software...theres so many times I want to listen to music while doing things. Also, my computer is not slow...I have plenty of memory and processing power so that is not the problem. Windows Media Player had always worked fine for me...what is wrong with iTunes?
    PLEASE HELP!!!

    moraleclipse,
iTunes uses Quicktime, which uses DirectX/DirectSound for playback.
This article suggests some possible causes of conflict in that process, and steps that can be taken to try and resolve it.

  • Update itune 6, now all songs skip

    Hello,
After downloading and installing itunes 6, all my songs skip and sounds like they are scratched (and weren't before). How can i fix this???

    hi y'all!
actually, the MacMuse advice in that particular tip is directed towards versions of itunes that use Quicktime 6.5.2 for their audio playback. for the QT 7 version of the waveout quick-fix (for itunes 5.0.x and 6.0), see this document:

  • Songs skipping on itunes

I've just purchased an ASUS X553M and they didn't skip at first, and now every song skips.
I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled, I've restarted my computer, I've checked I've got the latest updated version.
I've searched for this problem and gone to Task Manager, changed the priority to 'high'.
It happens to songs i've imported from CDs and bought from iTunes store so I really don't know what it could be.
Do i return the laptop or is it an iTunes fault and take the laptop to an Apple store even though it's not a Mac.

There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • Select Purchased Songs Skip on iPod

Three of my recently purchased songs skip on my iPod, but not my iTunes. I've reset the iPod and restored it enough that Apple Support tells me it's an iTunes problem. My iPod plays all other purchased music, but only on these three songs will it skip. It skips at the same point each time, but the points vary between song. If I "fast-forward" past the skip-point, it will play a bit more of the song (maybe a couple of minutes), and skip again. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Thanks very much, it's gotten really irritating, and I've run out of viable solutions.

    Hi Charlotte,
I've had this symptom before on my iPod, and have solved it by taking rather drastic action. Please pay close attention to the advice I will give now and proceed only if you understand the implications.
I firmly believe that many iPods suffer from disk fragmentation and errors which cause this problem. Syncing iPods with continually changing content in one's iTunes library is not a good thing in the interest of keeping an iPod healthy, even though it's extremely handy. Also, even though the process of restoring an iPod is usually considered a last-resort option, it actually does nothing to check for or correct possible disk problems on an iPod, whereas the procedure I describe below does.
The first thing to do is to take a careful inventory of what's on your iPod and what's on your computer. As long as you're certain that you won't lose any irreplaceable data by temporarily deleting the contents of your iPod, you should be safely able to follow these steps and restore your iPod, hopefully solving the playback problem in the process.
    1. Connect your iPod to your computer.
    2. Quit iTunes if it was open or opens automatically at this point.
    3. Open Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility).
    4. Select your iPod from the sidebar in the Disk Utility window, taking care to select the device itself rather than just the logical volume appearing below it.
    5. Click the Erase tab.
    6. Enter a name for your iPod in the Name field.
    7. From the Volume Format drop-down list, select Mac OS Extended.
    8. Uncheck the Install Mac OS 9 Drivers option.
    9. Click the Security Options button.
    10. Check the Zero Out Data radio button.
    11. Click the Erase button.
    12. Give your consent to the ensuing deletion of the contents of the volume/disk when prompted.
    13. When Disk Utility is finished erasing your iPod, quit Disk Utility. Your iPod should now appear as a generic-looking white removable disk icon on your Desktop.
    14. Launch iTunes.
    15. Follow the prompts to set up your iPod for use with iTunes on your computer, name it (even though you already gave it a name in Disk Utility), and sync it with your iTunes library after setting the various iPod preferences to your liking.
Please note that I have performed the preceeding actions with my own 5G 30 GB iPod Video more than once with only positive effects, so I am not merely pulling wild suggestions out of my hat. I would really like to hear back from you after you've tried this, if you decide to go for it, to see if it solves your problem. I am thinking of refining these instructions and submitting them as a user tip here in Apple Discussions.
    Good luck.

  • Songs skipping like scratched cd in iTunes 10.6 why and what is the fix

Hi, I use my MacBook pro to play backing tracks for my live show. I am working in Greece in the outdoors at night. Since the beginning of the summer iTunes has been skipping like mad during gigs Not Good. I don't remember when I upgraded my iTunes but don't recall having the problem last year when I started using the MacBook. I have searched the net and have found many a kindred soul suffering skipping songs.
    What gives?
    What I have tried:
1- I have disabled the sudden movenmt sensor thinking it might be a Bass Response issue. However, still does it.
2- bought a DJ rack to elevate the computer thinking it might be a heat issue. Nope.
3- got rid of all start up items, closed airport, netshred, etc.
4- changed the setting on Perian from Dolby stereo to stereo, and then I uninstalled it. Nope
5- I use the apogee duet live and I get skips. Tried it without the duet and it's worse.
    What I am running-

    Lion X 10.7.4
Processor- 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7

    Hi, Clinton,
Now I think that I have officially tried everything short of taking out the HD and replacing it..
I have used the removable drive and still got the problem.. However, I noticed that the skipping only happens on my Backing Tracks and the same ones, which then told me that the tracks became corrupted. So I re-encoded 2 of the tracks using Garageband and Others I just replaced with new versions..
It worked great for 2 gigs and I was chuffed to bits.. However, I needed the third gig to make it a go and then BLAMMO one of the re-encoded songs skips... My 4th gig I get a new addition to the skipping...
Something is wrong and it is doing my head in.. Do you have any other suggestions aside from going back to my Cheapie Windows Notebook that never skipped?
