Songs Won't Play, Album Art Not Modifiable, ID3 Tags, Need Help

I have a 32 GB iPod Touch, Windows Vista, the latest version of iTunes and Quicktime as well as the latest iPod software.
I noticed the other day that a bunch of my songs were missing album art. I have a library with almost 7,000 songs and I have album art for everything. I went to the songs to attempt to fix the album art and noticed that it said, Album Art Not Modifiable, in the Album Art preview screen. I thought that was weird and it wouldn't let me add new album art to these albums.
I also noticed that none of these songs would play. They wouldn't play on my iPod or on iTunes. You can click play and it looks like it's going to play, but the counter never leaves "0".
I thought something was wrong with my files and that I would have to re rip or download the songs. However, by chance I opened one of the songs in Window Media Player and it worked, so I knew the files were fine.
I did a search online and found several people with the same problem and a few things to try. But nothing worked until I stumbled upon a solution of setting the ID3 tags to version "None", then setting them to version 2.4. I tried it and it worked.
But now it keeps happening, I get a new group of albums every day that won't play.
Can anyone tell me what is causing this?
How do I prevent it?
Do I really need to take every song in my library and change the ID3 tags, that could take forever?
Could anyone please help and shed some light on this.
Thank You

Thanks for replying, Please read our Operating System details before taking a guess about what 'could' be the problem...
I think I figured it out anyway, Windows Media Player might be adding extra information that iTunes does not like, either Windows Media Player and/or iTunes 7.7.1 don't conform to ID3 v2.4 standards...
Please fix your software, Apple. I know how you love to be unique and mock PC users with your one-sided advertisements but at least conform to the ID3 standards.

  • Installing art when "Album Art Not Modifiable"

I was recently trying to drag and drop album artwork into the iTunes photo receptacle in the lower left hand corner and noticed that it read "Album Art Not Modifiable". Does that mean I can't paste anything there? There's no art at all currently, even when I ask iTunes to find the album art for that CD. If anyone knows of a way to override this, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

    Is that really true?
'Cause being new to this, I've only just added a few albums as .wav and succesfully downloaded album art, using the functionality within Itunes. And this should not have been possible? For instance Loretta Lynn "Van Lear Rose", Emmylou Harris "Stumble into grace" and Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach "Painted from Memory" all worked just fine. But Itunes was not able to download album art for all my albums - Simply Red "Greatest Hits" from 1996 was one that did not work. So I browsed the internet and was able to find jpegs of this album art, which I know have stored locally. But how do I get that into Itunes?

  • Songs with the same album art not grouped together in iTunes for Windows

Brand new iTunes user here - do not yet have an iPod! (Needed some music only on iTunes)
When I first started up iTunes, it imported all of my music I already had on my computer. A few of them are soundtracks with different artists.
When they are shown in the iTunes library, the soundtracks have been broken up by Artist instead of staying as a whole album. How do I get the songs back together as one album? I found the folder on my computer where they are stored and combined them there, but they are still separate in the iTunes library.
    Thanks from a total newbie!

Mark the tracks on the album as "Part of a compilation" and fill in the Album Artist field as "Various Artists". Click on the first track of your album to highlight it, hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight everything in between. Right click on the selection and choose Get Info. You'll get a message asking if you want to edit multiple items, say yes. If you are using iTunes 8 in the box that opens go to the Options tab and change "part of a compilation" to Yes and choose OK.
Also in your library click on the title bar of album column to bring all the tracks in the same album together. If you keep clicking in the title you can choose it to sort by Album, Album by Artist or Album by Year. Clicking on the little triangle on the right side of the column header changes the sort direction. Pointing up and the column is sorted in Ascending order (A to Z). Pointing down and the column is sorted in Descending order (Z to A).

  • Song data changes and album art not updating

I've been using itunes for a couple of years pretty smoothly, but lately (past 2 months or so), I've noticed a degradation in the performance. When I go to update the album art or other song info for a whole ablum at a time, maybe only 6 tracks are updated. It can take 4 or 5 repeated attempts before it finally "sticks" for some tracks. This also happens sometimes when I'm updating a single track, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which tracks are affected and which aren't.
Other functions are fine: playback, burning, importing, just the maintenance of the data attached to tracks.
My first guess is RAM, I've only got 256 megs, and my library sits a little over 50 gigs. I know upgrading my RAM makes sense on many levels, but I couldn't find any topics with a similar problem, so I wanted to rule out other possibilites too.
    Thanks!

I think they've all been ripped, and Gracenote didn't have correct or complete info. Not all of the tags were v2.3, but they were v2.2 at least. Was there really that big of a difference between the revisions?
I just tried updating the tags to v2.3, and the same thing happened! Only 3 of the 16 tracks show as having updated to v2.3, the rest are still v2.2, or oddly enough show as none (despite having info displayed in the library and "get info" screens). I bet I can get the remaining tracks to v2.3 after repetition, but it's a pain to have to do the same action 5 times to make it stick.
Not the source of the problem, but a complicating factor was that I tried the wmp11 beta, and it seemed to have stolen the album art from itunes. Those albums which showed up in wmp (only about 15-20% of my collection)were the exact same ones which disappeared in itunes. When I went to repair the album art gaps in itunes is when this issue went from a minor annoyance to a clear sign something was wrong.

  • Missing songs / won't add or import files / corrupt id3 tags?

    Hey Folks,
I can't seem to get some songs/files to add or import to itunes...
My computer crashed while itunes was open. When I rebooted the itunes library was corrupted and all playlists and songs were missing.
    ... no problem...
I'll just add the itunes folder right... Which is what I did.
Problem is now a good 20% of the songs are missing. They are on the harddrive in the itunes music folder, but won't import or add to itunes.
I suspect maybe it has something to do with corrupt ID3 tags?
Anyone know the answer to this mystery?
    Thx

    I assume adding artwork is a tag-affecting change - but I can't
add on this track - it just reverts to the black image.
I take it the tags themselves are hidden. I see no direct
editing options for them although I read than they can be
set to different types - and there are utilities available to
    clean, fix, re-set, etc.
Ok, now I see your edit - this isn't an mp3, it's .aiff.

  • Album art not modifiable

i get my music from limewire and i was wondering how can i modify the art i try to use album cover finder and it finds the art but i cant modify it could anybody please help?

    i was wondering how
    can i modify the art
    Like Steve said...
And there's a nicer way using drag and drop straight from a web page to do a whole album in one go.
1)_In the bottom left of iTunes, there's a little window, the one where videos play and artwork is shown. If it says 'Now Playing', click on the 'Now Playing' text till it says 'Selected Song'. If it says 'Selected Song' leave it as it is.
    2) In your library, select all the songs from an album, or all the songs for which you want the same artwork.
    3) Go to amazon.com or wherever you get your album images from. It could be somewhere on your hard disk.
    4) Drag the artwork from amazon.com or your hard-disk into the 'Selected Song' window. iTunes will now set the artwork for the whole album!!!
    Magic!

I just downloaded an album but one song won't play instead a message that "This computer is not authorized" to play the song. The prompt has a log in and when I log in it tells me the computer is already authorized. What gives? Specifically the album is Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes and the song is DMT Song (feat. Thundercat). I purchased the entire album and it even played fine the first listen through.

    Hi,
If you are in a country that permits redownloads, delete track and go to iTunes Store > purchased and redownload. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

Delete the song (move it to the Trash) and download it again under iTunes Store>Quick Links>Purchased>Music>Songs>Not in My Library.

  • HT1491 I purchased an album with bonus songs but the bonus songs won't play. What is the problem ?

I purchased an album with bonus songs but the bonus songs won't play.  Whazt's the problem ?

Okay, that sounds like the dodgy tracks have been getting damaged during the download.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

If just some of the tracks on the album are doing that, that suggests those tracks are damaged.

  • Updating Album Art, when iTunes says "Album Artwork Not Modifiable"

How can I go about updating or adding album art when the Artwork area at the lower left corner of iTunes says, "Album Artwork Not Modifiable"? Every effort to add the artwork from iTunes has failed. When I paste the album photo from another site, it doesn't save.

I figured this out. I found that the folder and files only had "read" privileges and not "read & write" privileges. I did the following:
    1. In finder I right clicked the parent folder for iTunes and selected "Get Info".
    2. Selected my user and changed the rights to "read & write".
    3. This step is the most important. With my user still selected in blue, you click on the options "cog wheel" below the users, at the bottom. Select, "Apply to the enclosed items". It may ask you again if you are sure, say "yes". By doing this you will apply your users "read & write" privileges to all folders and files underneath your iTunes folder.
This worked for me and I wish you the best!

  • HT3951 I downloaded an album and 2 of the songs won't play

I downloaded an album and 2 of the songs won't play and it's showing that the songs are fully downloaded. I have the latest version of itunes. If anyone knows what the problem is and how to fix it, please help!

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting the incomplete tracks from your iTunes library and redownload them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those tracks and use the 'Report a Problem' link (iTunes support should reply within, I think, 24 to 48 hours).
Some people have had a problem with the 'report a problem' link (it's been taking people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) - if it does that to you then try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.
