Sonnet MDX 1.8 Question

I would like to upgrade and keep using FCE HD I have a G4 MDD 1.25 single processor with 1.5gig ram and two HD's stock video card bought it in 2003 Apple care just ran out. Would this 600 bucks hold me in decent speed for the next 3-4 years? Would I notice a difference and has anyone got this upgrade, I can't find a user review anywhere. Thanks

Hi
I managed to get an original Apple processor card from the clearance/specials section of OWC's website, although they seem few and far between:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/bargains/
Unfortunately I expect most are available as the result of trade-ins as people upgrade their processors, but because there are so few cost effective third party processor upgrades available for the MDD and FW800 G4s (especially the dual 1.25GHz and 1.42GHz models), they rarely ever appear. Even if they do, they're likely to be a similar cost to a third party upgrade, despite being four or five years old and only coming with a limited warranty (I think mine was 90 days).
GigaDesigns are one of the few companies currently offering a dual 7455 based upgrade, similar to the Apple originals with the full 2MB level 3 cache (I expect yours may have 1MB):

  • Sonnet G4/500 Upgrade Questions

    I have a 400mhz B&W G3, and I am running OS 10.4.11. I just got a Sonnet Encore G4 ZIF upgrade on clearance for a good price. It is the Encore 500 Mhz/1 MB cache ZIF card. I want to know if there is anything I need to do to the G3 before I install the processor. (such as firmware updates/jumper reconfiguration) Also is it possible to overclock the G4 processor like you could the original G3?
    thanks,
    Allen

    There are no jumpers to set speed on the Sonnet, speed is set in hardware. The jumpers on the motherboard have no effect. You might be able to resolder some tiny 0 ohm jumpers on the cpu board to overclock it 50Mhz more but you'd probably have to dial the cache speed back a bit. If sonnet could have run it stable at 550 though they would have done it themselves.

  • Sonnet  MDX  1.8 Upgrade

    Has anyone done this processor upgrade. I have a single 1.25 MDD 2003 and was wondering about this. I would get a dual 1.42 but can't find one to buy so if anyone can point me in the right direction. How much speed increase can I expect espically for video rendering??

  • What to keep? - Dual 1.42 or Dual Sonnet 1.83 - RAM: 4x512MB or 2x1GB

    Im looking for some insight - I have both the Apple Dual 1.42 and Dual Sonnet MDX 1.8Ghz Cards for my MDD. Im sure that everyone already knows the specs of these 2 cards. I Use mainly music editing and gaming softare on my machine. Im just trying to figure out what is the fastest card, and is there a solid benchmark program that can give me a definitive answer?
    X-bench CPU Avg. scores are around: 77 for the 1.42 and 95 for the 1.8, but Im not sure if i trust X-bench scores, they seem inconsistent. Geekbench scores the 1.42 @ 1200+, and the 1.8 @ 1500+, So now it looks like the the Sonnet card is the fastest..... Now when I run Cinebench, the dual 1.42 always has the lowest numerical score in all tests compaired to the dual 1.8, which im guessing is the L3 in the 1.42 is doing this. What can I trust? What numbers should I be looking at? Is there another Benchmark program that is better?
    Also any ideas on the impact in speed by using 4 x 512mb Ram Sticks or 2 x 1 Gb sticks (in dual channel of course)?
    All thoughts welcome, thanks!

    Hi-
    Geekbench and Cinebench are completely trustworthy.
    The reason the dual 1.42 does better in Cinebench is due to the L3 cache.
    In Geekbench, it is due to the higher clock speed of the Sonnet.
    Your question as to which is better is only answered with "it depends".
    Benchmarks only provide a point of comparison.
    Real world use determines the reality.
    For gaming, graphics intensive and video applications, the dual 1.42 is the better choice.
    For general computer use, without graphics intensive work, the Sonnet is probably better.
    There should be no difference in 4x 512MB or 2x 1GB DIMMs.
    Unlike PC's, Mac firmware controls the timing and speed of the RAM.
    Unlike G5 and Mac Pro machines, matched pairs and full channels make no difference in the G4.
    If there were any difference, it wouldn't be one that you would see/feel.....

  • Differences in CR Connectivity via MDx or BW

    Which is the recommended way to connect from Crystal to SAPBI, is it via MDx or BW drivers. We are seeing big difference in the performance,
    1. MDx is performing pretty slowly as compared to BW.
    2. BW doesnt rollup based on the select list, irrespective of the columns selected, the rowcounts are the same
    I do understand that the MDx should be go-forward option, but I get into various perf issues and memory contention issues with it whereas BW works better on these conditions.
    We use XIR2, sap integration kit, AIX 5.3
    Any recommendation will be great.
    Thanks in advance
    Venkat

    Hi Ingo,
    The BW is actually performing pretty faster as compared to MDx, hence the question on whats recommended.
    On #2, let me give an example as below,
    I have 3 columns in the report, which are Region, State, $$ Amount, I get 25 rows returned, which is like
    North      IL     100
    North      MN   200
    South     FL    150
    South     SC    100
    East       NY    500
    East       PA    200
    West      CA    100
    West      OR    200
    ... so on totalling 25 rows and about $2500 as amount, this would be supplying Region, State and Amount to Bex via BW Driver
    Now, I remove the State from the report, which is actually supplying only the Region and Amount to the Bex via BW, I would expect a rolled up results for the Region, but it just shows as below
    North          100
    North          200
    South         150
    South         100
    East           500
    East           200
    West          100
    West          200
    ... so on totalling 25 rows and $2500 amount.
    I expect this, as this is what results via MDx
    North     600
    South    300
    East      900
    West     700
    If I see the Show SQL in the Crystal, I see the report with BW driver shows a "Select * From..." whereas report with MDx shows the specific columns like "Select Region, State, Amount from ...". I am thinking we are missing some settings somewhere.
    Let me know if this clears the air.
    Thanks,
    Venkat

  • How to reduce the number of crossjoin in my webi query

    All,
    I am running some publication base of a webi report
    notes that i have a profile for each of the recipient
    for example in the profile i have a detail objects with:
    recipient 1 can only see 901
    recipient 2 can only see 902
    In my publication I do the filtering on the local personalization
    then I sent the report to all the user concerned using the multi pass option in the advanced part.
    The thing is that for some of the recipient I do reach the limit:
    more than i million cell
    notes it generate around 21 crossjoin in the MDX
    My first question is .. if I follow the best practice:
    and to confirm:
    1 - cut the webi query in 2 queries one for the display attributes and another one for the actual data .. the thing is I do not have much display attributes in my query will that really help ?
    2 - I believe putting a where clause in my MDX will save me some crossjoint .. but in my case I am not sure on how to put a filter that could be after used thru a profile in a publication

    Hi,
    The recipient in my case are sales rep, they are not part of SAP , they just have a number ( key) to identify them.( we created one user ID for each of the sales rep in BOBJ)
    in the case of our publication it is very easy to setup .. we just have to put the key that identify them within one big profile. and the result would be a condition in our webi report.
    so in short setting up the security in SAP would have been too much work

  • Firmware for Rev B. iMac

    I have a Rev B iMac, running System 9.1, 512 MB RAM, HARMONi 500MHz upgrade. The Boot ROM is 3.0.f2 which I THINK was installed by Firmware Update 1.1. I've read that I would need version 1.2 of the firmware if I want to install OS X.
    However, on reading the description, it looks like the 1.2 update is only for machines that are used in a NetBoot configuration which mine is not. So my questions are:
    1. Is the 1.2 update really required for OS X or is the 1.1 version good enough?
    2. Would Mac OS 10.3.9 work on a Rev B or should I drop back to 10.2.x?
    3. Will I even be able to update either the firmware, Mac OS X, or both since I have the HARMONi card upgrade?

    This Apple article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
    clearly states that firmware update 1.2 needs to be installed before updating to Mac OS X 10.2 or later. Despite the description of the update itself, it is the correct update to install. Doing so will NOT prevent future use of Mac OS 9; you can switch back and forth between X and 9 (or even Mac OS 8.x).
    Mac OS X 10.3.9 works fine on stock tray-loaders. I think it runs faster than 10.2 on the same hardware because of the optimization effort by Apple for 10.3. Since you have the max 512mb RAM, it should work quite well for you.
    You'll have to check your documentation or the Sonnet web site for question 3. If the upgrade was produced before Mac OS X (or a specific release of Mac OS X such as Jaguar or Panther), it probably was never tested to see if it was compatible. Someone with a Sonnet upgrade installed may pop by here, hopefully, with hands-on experience.

    which is the best usb 3 hub recommended for desktop?

I think that what I need is a Hub Driver that works with Lion 10.7.4...
    I would suggest contacting Sonnet directly with that question. I spent over a year with their PCIe card trying to get it to work reliably in two Mac Pro's with 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 and never succeeded because of the drivers, which are really modified LaCie drivers. Switching to a CalDigit card solved the problem. I don't use hubs so I don't know if the CalDigit would work with them, but I suspect that adding a USB 3.0 hub to the mix would only make shaky (in my experience at least) drivers even shakier.

  • Installed a new Sonnet. Just a simple question

    NEVER MIND. Posted in the wrong area and not sure how to deleat the post.
    I just installed a new Sonnet Encore/MDX G4 Duet card on my G4 dual mirror. Everything seems just great at this early point. But I have a question. How does one know it is all working properly and being recognized by the computer. Is that something I can confirm in "System Profiler"? And if so what should I see listed. Just curious. I just want to "see" all is well. Thanks in advance. Jeff

  • Question on MDX Query

    Hi,
    I have the following MDX query
    1.WITH
    2.MEMBER [GE].[GEOSUM] AS 'Sum({[GE].[TX],[GE].[OK]})'
    3.SELECT {[GE].[TX],[GE].[OK]} ON ROWS,
    4.{[Metrics].[Revenue]} ON COLUMNS FROM Cube1.Basic1
    The o/p is follows :
    Axis 1 || Revenue ||
    (TX) || 1000 ||
    (OK) || 2000 ||
    I am trying to create this MDX query dynamically at runtime. Line 1 and 2 would come from a table. I need to add append line 3 and 4.
    Is there any way that I can get the same output by replacing Line 3 (i.e {[GE].[TX],[GE].[OK]} ) with something more generic (like say [GE].[GEOSUM]....).I tried [GE].[GEOSUM].members but this returns me all the dimension members not just TX on OK.
    Is anyone aware of any MDX member functions that I can use to achieve this ?
    Appreciate any help/pointer in this regard.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joel

    Hi Praveen,
    In SSAS, we can use Order() function to specify the order. Please take a look at the following articles:

  • Statistical calc with MDX question (Mode function as an excel)

    Hi All,
      I need to create an MDX Calc to Returns the most frequently occurring, or repetitive, value in an array or range of data.
      For example, the mode of 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 10 is 3.
      In Excel I use the MODE() function but I don't know how to do this in MDX and add it as a measure in Universe.
      I can't do the formula in WEBI because we have big data volume and I can't retrieve all the customers in WEBI.
      We have SAP BW 7.0 and SAP BusinessObjects XI 3.1 fix pack 1.3
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    it looks like you created the entry twice so I would suggest you close on of them:
    Statistical calc with MDX question (Mode function as an excel)
    I don't think that those kind of statistical functions are available in MDX. you can always go to se37 and use the bapi_get_functions to see the list of supported functions.

  • Essbase MDX question

    Hi there
    I am at a client where I have to do comparative store analysis. Basically with MDX I need to do the following:
    When doing comparable store analysis on a daily level in my Time dimension a store must have traded a year ago on the same comparable day as per the company's trading calendar.
    When doing comparable store analysis on a weekly level a store must have traded a year ago for the full same comparable previous year's week (i.e. all the days in the week) as per company's trading calendar.
    If the criteria is not met #missing must be returned else the day or week value.
    On day level my MDX works fine:
    CASE
    WHEN
    IsLevel([Entity].CurrentMember, 0) AND
    IsLevel([Time].CurrentMember, 0) AND
    NOT IsEmpty([Periodicity].[LY])
    THEN
    ([LY], [Act], [Time].CurrentMember, [Entity].CurrentMember, [Account].CurrentMember)
    END
    The question is on a week level how do I check if a store traded on every single day of the same week last year. Getting the week is no problem, but checking every child of that week.
    Just another point on this: I need to do this on month, quarter etc levels as well, so hard coding to check from day 1 to 7 will not suffice.
    Thanks
    Johan

    You are correct, currently Essbase does not support updates via MDX.

  • What is MDX on earth? some questions ...

    Hello gurus
    I am planning to use a 3-party tool to make query to acccess data within SAP BW, which intends to replace Bex tools. I heard that OLE DB/OLAP BAPI/XMLA are three options of interfaces, and all those three interfaces are based on MDX. After rough investigation, I found that MDX is a standard query language to query MOLAP storage data. So I have the following questions:
    1. Since MDX only serves for MOLAP data storage, shall I firstly need to convert all the relative infocube in SAP BW from relational data storage into multidimensional data storage?
    2. Since MOLAP only serves for MS SQL 2000 database, so if we use oracle as SAP BW database server, then we cannot use MOLAP? and cannot use MDX?
    3. How to use MDX? Shall I firstly use tcode MDXTEST to generate the MDX code for certain infocubes, and then copy such code into 3-party tool?
    can anybody answer my questions or part?
    thank you very much!

    hi Patrick,
    what 3rd party tools will you use ?
    as mentioned by Anil, 1 & 2 are wrong.

  • New Sonnet Encore /MDX G4 processor upgrade?

    I looking at New Sonnet Encore /MDX G4 processor upgrade.
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/encoremdxduet.html
    Do you think that would make my Power Mac G4 MDD (if I got Dual PowerPC G4 7447A CPUs running at 1.8 GHz) about as fast as my iMac G5 1.8 or my MacBook 1.83 ?

    My Dual 1.25 is just as fast as the iMac G5 1.8 it replaced.
    Your MacBook beats all of these machines, it is a Dual-Core processor, and it's a newer chip that beats any PPC except the Dual G5's.

  • Question using Java API in a multi threaded application for MDX queries

    Currently I’m building a web application that makes a lot of MDX calls using the Essbase Java API. Each time we run an MDX call we basically run the following code:
    IEssbase ess = IEssbase.Home.create(IEssbase.JAPI_VERSION);
    IEssDomain dom = ess.signOn(userName, password, false, null, "embedded");
    IEssCubeView cv = cv=dom.openCubeView("view", hostName, appName, cubeName);
    IEssOpMdxQuery op = cv.createIEssOpMdxQuery();
    op.setQuery(false,mdx,false,IEssOpMdxQuery.EEssMemberIdentifierType.NAME);
    cv.performOperation(op);
    IEssMdDataSet mddata = cv.getMdDataSet();
    cv.close();
    My questions is, is this the correct way to use the API in multi threaded environment where many users may be hitting the application at the same time? For every request do I need to create a separate IEssbase object and sign on to an IEssDomain? Or can I use a single IEssbase and IEssDomain object for the entire application? If not should I call the IEssDomain.signOff() method after each user’s request has completed? Which of the above objects are thread safe? I’m using Essabae 9.3.1. Any insight would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks for the input friend,
    I should have mentioned that in my application all
    connections to Essbase use the same user name and
    password so the filtering isn’t a concern. This is my
    first Java application using Essbase has a data
    source, I’m used to connecting to various SQL
    databases and I always use a connection pool, how is
    connection pooling handled in the Essbase java API?I'm not sure what happened to it since I never used it, but there used to be something called the High Availability Services or something that was essentially a connection pool for Essbase JAPI connections, but it required an extra license.
    Since you don't care about identity (everyone has full access to everything), you can create your own connection pool, but you'll have to manage your multithreading yourself. Its been this way since the beginning. The C API isn't/wasn't thread-safe either (we tried).
