Sonnet tempo sata e4p and raid 5

Hi
I just bought a tempo fusion 500p and a tempo sata e4p and i thought i was going to be able to configure them as raid 5.... Inside the fusion i have 5 500gb disks and i was hoping that there would be software with the e4p card since it said it was raid 5 compatible. how can i get it to work as raid 5? do i have to buy software or another hardware card? i've spent too much time looking around the forum here and it got me even more confused since most replies here mention that if you get a hardware controller it should be possible....
what are my options? help would be greatly appreciated...
a confused and a little dissapointed editor....

Yes, you are correct. There will be software that will allow you to set up the hardware on the card since the card actually controls the RAID system.
I would suggest reading up on RAID theory before you take the plunge. RAID 5 will give you redundancy but no performance increase, RAID 0 will give you Performance but no redundancy, then you have RAID 0+1, 3, 50, 6, 60, and so on. Make sure you know what you want before you get to deep into this.
Look at the bottome of my post and you can see what I'm using. I have that box set up with a RAID 0 on two drives for performance while editing and then I have one drive that is for backups.
Just another thought.

  • Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P PCIe problem

    Hi,
I bought second Sonnet eSATA card from OWC. This time it is E4P PCIe.
The first one which I own - E2P card (2 ports) works perfectly with my ext. enclosure - the ICY Dock, but the new one - E4P causes system halt.
    The situation looks like that:
I placed the E4P in the 4th slot in my G5 (before, in that slot I had E2P). I turned up the enclosure (the same which was working fine with E2P) and turned on the computer. Than, during computer startup, every time, the screen become grey with the information that I need to push the Power button for a few seconds and restart. When I turn on the computer at first, and after the enclosure -> system freezes (with no beach ball, just freezes), and I need to do a hard reset. Before iI turned on the enclosure, I can check in the System Profiler that the card is recognized by system.
This problem I had with the second E4P card. The first one which I bought from OWC about a 3 weeks ago, made the same problems. I thought that the card is damaged, so I sent it back to OWC for a replacement.
Now, yesterday they sent me a new one (the serial number is different) - but unfortunately - the situation is the same: system freezes after connecting to the powered on enclosure.
Does anybody have any idea why almost the same card, but with 4 ports instead of 2 in E2P, doesn't work properly?
    Marek.

    Hi,
+> And you should always check for current firmware.+
In the System Profiler there is driver ver. 2.1.1 - so it is up to date.
+> Were you using PM or direct connect with the ICY and are you using that the same way?+
I use direct connect - the ICY doesn't have a port multiplier. So, with E2P I have two disks RAIDed and the other two not powered on. I use them sometimes as a backup for my other disks (firewire, internal) - but of course I need to reconnect the SATA cables. So, to avoid reconnecting cables from time to time, and use all 4 disks, I bought the 4 ports card.
So, the connection is identical -> direct, this time 4 cables from card to the enclosure. But nothing works! Both cards are from the same producer, the same cables, the same enclosure - one card is working, the other one freezes the system. Why?
I wrote an email to Sonnet, I will see if they can help.
I will try to reset nvram and let you know. (I think tomorrow - I have a lot of work today)
In G5 there isn't PCI Expansion Slot Utility - this is in MacPro.
    Any other ideas?
    Marek.

  • LG GGC-H20L with Sonnet Tempo Sata Pci Card into Powermac G5

    Hello dear Community.
I have a LG GGC-H20L HD-DVD/Blu Ray Drive. And a Sonnet Tempo SATA PCI Card.
The Problem is, that the Computer cant find the LG GGC-H20L Drive. The Sonnet Tempo Card it find. Broke i drivers? And where i can get it?
Can one of you Help me?

    Nokiman
I made sure there was a good 'thunk' as it slotted in to the PCI slot everytime I installed it, I wiggled it to make sure, I applied reasonable pressure to make sure it was seated correctly, etc. I tried everything, short of using a hammer! Still no joy. I have a PCI firewire card which works perfectly in all slots.
I've sent it back to the supplier for a replacement/upgrade to the Tempo-X 4+4.
    Thanks for the tips.

  • Sonnet Tempo Sata E2P driver

I just installed a new Sonnet Tempo SATA E2P card, but for some reason it's not recognizing the driver. I've tried installing the driver several times, and each time it tells me the install is successful. But when I open System profiler, the PCI card shows up just fine, but under "driver installed" it says "No."
I've got a Dual-core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 running OSX (10.5.7), and it's supposed to be compatible. Any ideas?

What's the first character of the card's serial number? According to Sonnet's website with regard to G5 compatibility: "Only Tempo SATA E2P with serial numbers starting with A or B compatible; Tempo SATA E2P with serial numbers starting with C are not compatible in Power Mac G5."
If that's not the case, are you trying to install drivers from an installation CD or have you downloaded the latest drivers from Sonnet's website?

  • Sonnet Tempo SATA E4i does not work??

This stinks!! I have around 500GB worth of data locked on that Partition. Anybody else having problems with this card in 10.5??

For the record... after doing my Leo upgrade, I promptly dragged my 3 SATA drives in to the "do not index" page in the Spotlight prefs, then after waiting well over an hour of letting Spotlight index my boot volume, I issued a Restart. Finder seemed hosed and the machine churned and churned, apparently still trying to complete the indexing. I left it overnight because I was out of steam at 4am. When I woke, it was still spinning, so noticing that the drives had stopped accessing, I did a forced shutdown and then a Safe Boot to force Disk Utility to do its thing. My machine came up fine, and after rebooting normally, I had to drag the SATA drives into the Spotlight ignore pane one more time (they didn't stick because of the hard shutdown I guess), and now all drives are working fine on my system, including the SATAs, which I've done numerous read/write tests on (in Finder). Of note is that a few days ago, before the Leo upgrade, I had updated my Sonnet Tempo E4i firmware to the latest (2.1.2) - not sure wht impact that had, but it couldn't hurt. I'll report back if things go South, but so far, so good on my G5 Quad with the G5 Jive, 3 Maxtor 500GBs, 2 bay internal SATAs, and a bunch of FW drives. I hope you guys get it going also.

  • Sonnet Tempo SATA E4i

    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4i.html
I'd love to hear from some people who have this exact card installed and running in their Quad-core 2.5GHz PowerPC G5. Is it working well? Any problems to report? Are your SATA-300 drive(s) working great thanks to this card? Or what?
    TIA

    Michael
I think the Sonnet site has firmware updates to
    enable PM on your card.
    http://www.sonnettech.com/downloads/adapter_sw.html
    I might be wrong...
    Andrew
    Dear Andrew,
The Sonnet E4i was never intended to support port multiplier. That is why it is $100 less expensive than the E4P. The E4P and the E4i both use the same firmware but only the E4P has PM capability. The latest firmware is 2.0 and have it loaded on both cards.

  • Sonnet Tempo 5.09 firmware

I recently picked up a couple more Sonnet Tempo SATA cards. One has the 5.09 firmware version. Seems to work fine but I'm tempted to up grade to 5.13. Then I started wondering if there might be a downside to the upgrade if I was to use the card in a 6500 or 7500.

I would say "If it works, don't break it".
Firmware updates are typically for issue resolution or additional machine/feature support, often at the cost of older model support.....

  • How set up SATA I and SATA II drive on 975X MSI board??

I  have an SATA I drive in the system as a primary. Am adding another drive-SATA II and will make it the primary boot drive using the Lifeguard utilities and such that came with the Western Digital 320GB hard drive.
Thus I will have both an SATA I and an SATA II drive in the system.
Do I need to force Gen II to get the speed out of the primary drive?
How can I be sure I am getting the hypothetical 300MB/S?
Thanks so much for helping me out.
    Peter

You would be better off, backing up all data, and then using both drives in a RAID 0 for best performance, you will find all information in the following thread. I have set up my system using ACHI, SATA enhance and RAID and all benchmarking of each mode.

  • PCIe SATA Cards for RAID for video: Seritek 2ME4-E vs Sonnet Tempo E4P

    Hey Folks,
I'm just about to purchase bigger, faster RAID system for my video editing needs. I've already purchased 1TB Barracudas for the drives and I have decided on the Burly dual PM for the enclosure. http://www.burlystorage.com/ccp0-catshow/burlydualpm.html
The questions is which card? I've had a seritek 2 port card and also their expresscard for years without a problem. But some tests I've seen indicate that the Sonnet is a bit faster. Then again, I know that some people had problems with the firmware at least as recently as last spring.
What do people say? Hatter and Japamac, I'm hoping to hear from you.

    FirmTek:
If you would like the ability to support port multiplier enclosures and 3rd party SMART applications, the FirmTek SeriTek/e6G would be my choice for a low cost 2-port 6G controller with these features. This card features hot swap and is also able to hot plug Oxford 936/946 based enclosures without the need for a restart. Installation is easy.
I use the SeriTek/e6G in the 2009 Mac Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.5. The PCIe 2.0 slots in the 2009 model provide optimized performance. >
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-e6g/
You want a 4x or above card usually, one that has more bandwidth and performance, than those low end 1x 2-port cards that can't drive enough MB/sec to make using multiple drives / multiple enclosures.
Well, seeing you went with Seagate, not my cup of tea, I would have said WD Black Caviar 2TB drives instead.
Sonnet 4-port E4P is what I have used but it or its drivers may be an issue, totally unsure.
PM today is limited by today's drives. When it came out drives were slow by comparison, a mere 75MB/sec while today one drive can shovel 90-125MB/sec or half of what a PM can handle. You only get in real world about 250MB/sec maybe (overhead takes away from that 300MB/sec per port). That means while 6Gb is great, PM enclosures like FirmTek5PM need a new faster PM chip. Again, no idea where that is or when we will see it.
Maybe you should ask about SAS and be looking at even higher end RAID controllers from Areca perhaps.

  • Apple raid card with Sonnet Tempo SSD problem?

I am currently using Mac Pro 5.1 (2010)
    My configuration is
    1) Apple Raid Card in PCIe slot 4
2TB bootable HDD  and 3x 1TB HDDs configured to RAID 0
    2) Apple Radeon 5770 card in PCIe slot 1
    3) Sonnet Tempo SSD with Apple OEM 512GB SSD in PCIe slot 2
    4) Caldigit Fasta-6GU3pro USB3 + eSATA card in PCIe slot 3
When I boot from 2TB bootable HDD in main slot #1, everything works well.
But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
(The drive appears in boot disc selection in system preference, but nothing changed even select it and reboot.)
(I did a lot of PRAM reset too...)
The SSD works well when I put it to 2nd ODD slot with spare SATA2 connectors in there. (boot properly, etc).
But when I put it back to TEMPO card, It never appears during boot process (even I press option key).
    Maybe problem is due to
    1) Issue with APPLE raid card
    2) problem due to two additional SATA controllers in PCIe rains.
    3) Issue with card configuration (I have to test change the position of cards except APPLE RAID which requires slot 4)
    Does anybody experienced similar problems?

    This:
    > But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

  • Windows7/Bootcamp on Sonnet-Tempo-SSD-Card over PCIe?

    Hi,
I have Windows7-Pro/Bootcamp 3  on a SSD and it works fine, but over internal SATA-Port with only max. 3 Gbit/s.
The SSD on Sonnet-Tempo-SSD can work with 6 Gbit/s over PCIe-Port.
Is it possible to install Windows/Bootcamp 5 in this way, will it be bootable then
with the latest Bootcamp 5 now?
    Sonnet Support so far says:
"Unfortunately, you will not be able to run Windows/Bootcamp from the Tempo SSD card, as the drive is recognized as an externally mounted volume, and in order to run these OSes, the drives need to be mounted internally (through one of the drive bays) in order for the boot to work properly.
Windows will load normally if the Tempo SSD cards are mounted in a PC, likewise, OS X will boot if used in a Mac, but unfortunately, running a virtual machine (Bootcamp) will not work in the Mac".

Sonnet will not boot Windows in boot camp, but the Apricorn Solo x2 will

  • Need help with e-sata card and Primera disc publisher.

Hello, I recently purchased a Primera Disc Publisher, you can read about it here:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/465853-REG/Primera_63124_Bravo_SE_Blu_Disc .html
About 20% of the time, it works perfectly.
The rest, it doesn't work at all.  I've been on and off the phone with Primera support, and they've admitted something shocking to me: the e-sata card they bundle with their product, is known to not work well with Macs.  I asked them to recommend one for me that will work well with Macs, and they said they don't really know Macs, that I should find someone who does and get the recommendation from them.
In their defense, once I buy the new card, they're going to send me enough free ink cartridges to match the purchase.  I admit, that's pretty cool of them.
But the e-sata card.  Jeez.  This is the one I'm looking at:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/433920-REG/Sonnet_TSATAII_E4P_Tempo_SATA_E 4P_SATA.html
Do any of you have experience using this card on a Mac?  I'm getting pretty specific here, but do any of you have experience using this card on a Mac Pro with a Primera product?  I have a bunch of projects coming up where I will need to use the disc printer to finish the work, so I've got to find a suitable card!  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sonnet and the E4P is popular, good company, and of course great for 4 SATA ports and PM support.
If you are not using SATA drives though, there are other options. check OWC for SATA PCIe and support.

  • How do I use WD Raptor for OS/Apps drive and RAID 0 for Home/Data drive

So far I have configured my machine with a WD Raptor 74GB as the startup disk, and created a RAID 0 with the Seagate 250 GB drive (shipped with the machine) and a 250GB partion of a WDC 320GB drive. All drives were zeroed and I used the install disks to load Tiger on the Raptor. I backed up to a LaCie D2 1TB external hard drive with LaCie's Silverkeeeper.
I would like to use the WD Raptor as startup/apps/scratch disk and the RAID 0 for the user folders and other data. I would then like to create a RAID 1 with the RAID 0 and a 500GB partion of the LaCie 1TB external.
I have learned however that what I would like and what I can have are not always compatible.
    My questions:
Is the Silverkeeper backup sufficent, or should I have cloned my previous system?
What folders should accompany the application folder on the Raptor? So far I have only put the app folder there and nothing works. I suspect things like 'application support' should be there as well.
Is there a way to keep my home folder on the RAID 0 without using Terminal or spending too much time as the root user? I tried copying my home folder onto to the RAID 0 and putting an alias in the user account I had to create while installing the OS on the Raptor. This kind of works but is not a particularly elegant solution.
I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed or if the proposed configuration is even achievable.

Photoshop files of 1GB+ can eat up memory and scratch. And the more drives for scratch, the better.
Some of the limitations are with the bus, bandwidth, and 'swapping' code in and out of different cores that is inefficient.
Compilers can do some, but from the time new hardware (8 cores) to seeing improvements to compiler, and out to software (applications) and OS, can take a year or more but provide in the neighborhood sometimes of 40%. In which time, newer designs will change the equation. Caching and VM will improve with Leopard, but beyond that...?
So... back to "read world" IF you are in the habit of working with 1-2GB images, then a pair of Raptors for boot is helpful, AND 8GB and more of RAM, AND 4-8 drives for scratch. (Think of those Sonnet Port Multiplier controllers and Fusion 500 style case for 5 drives on one port).
If you work with files smaller than 500MB range, your needs are cut way down.
150GB Raptor boot drive. Small. subtract 25% for minimum free space, 140GB formatted, kind of tight for some. But it handles 60% well.
The outer 30% of 465GB (RE2) is also fast and good performance. I partition large boot drives to keep the OS and apps contained in the outer 1/3.
Mac Pro Memory Usage and Performance
If your work flow means doing more than one thing at a time on your Mac Pro, then you will see significant gains if you spend extra to get the 8-core version. Our Photoshop CS3 actions were completed 39% faster on the 8-core when we had 3 other apps busy crunching. This advantage emerges in spite of the memory bus limitations of the 8-core Mac Pro.
