Sony 8mm into iMovie

I have loads of old 8mm tapes to get into my imac but cannot find a good device to do it with in the uk market. I have found the Pinnacle Dazzle or something like that but it dont get a good right up. I have also seen just leads, can the imac do all the processing alone. What do any uk users use please, i want to port it straight into imovie 08.

To get your video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC300/index.php
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 08 / 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination for what you are doing.

    Hi
Sony TRV22E - CAN ONLY export the VIDEO material via a FireWire Cable (iLinc)
    Then Your Mac need eiter
    - a FireWire port - or -
    - a Thunderbolt port
if only Thunderbolt - Then You need a FireWire to Thunderbolt converter.
The USB- can only copy over the Still photos You also cam take with Your Camera. Will NEVER work for Video Export.

How do I import mpg files made by an old Sony camcorder into iMovie 11?

I had the same problem. Here is a very easy solution that worked for me.
1- Open the .mpg video with QuickTime Player
2-Go to file/export/ and pick the "Ipad,Iphone,Ipod Touch & AppleTV" option
3-Save your movie with the option "ipod touch &iphone 3GS" picked
4-Confirm by choosing folder of choice to save it in
Now this new version of the movie should be able to be read in imovies.
    Hope that helps!
    Good luck.

  • Video Converters to get Sony Video into iMovie

I am new to the video side of the world and need some advice. I am trying to import videos into iMovie. I am trying to import video from a Sony Cam, a DVD tht I made myself but mow would like to edit and my Flip Video. Additionally I will import video from a friends Nikon. Apple "suggested" handbrake, streamclip and toast. I see there a number of them on the app store. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Zapple

Handbrake will be useful for converting the DVD back to a format that iMovie can edit. MPEG Streamclip requires some extra software still sold by Apple caleld the MPEG-2 QuickTime Playback component, download the beta of Streamclip and follow their directions for installing it will get the MPEG-2 component installed correctly. This will then let you open the DVD directly in Streamclip and get pieces out of it or just convert the whole disk to Apple Intermediate Codec. As for Sony and Flip video, don't know specifically which camera you have and what formats they record in, but there's likely a way to convert most of them into Apple Intermediate Codec which is the native editing/playback format that iMovie uses.

  • Getting Sony movies into iMovie

I have Sony DSC H9 and HX1 digital cameras. The movies are quite good, but they don't seem to be compatible with iMovie. I have been able to xfer into iMovie HD by going through Quick Time. But doesn't see to work with iMovie 7.1.4. Sony says I need info from Apple. Can anybody help??

I am not sure your method is the right one when using Streamclip.
You are not supposed to open the .avi clip, just drag it onto Streamclip and drop it on the dotted square. Now you should see a view of the beginning of the clip within Streamclip. You don't need to play the clip there.
Now you select from the top menubar to 'Export to DV.'
When you tell Streamclip to 'export to DV' does a window come up asking where you want the dv clip saved?
I usually select 'desktop' so I can find it. It will have the same name as whatever your .avi's clip name is, but instead of the suffix .avi, it will be .dv.
When you see the clip converting, another smaller window of that clip, with somewhat jerky movements as the .avi clip is converting, should pop up automatically. Do you see that?
The Streamclip screen should show the beginning of your clip. It does not move and remains the same when the conversion is done. You should not be seeing a black screen there. In fact, I tried to make Streamclip give me a black screen and it would not do that at all.
Take that converted .dv clip and put THAT into your iMovie. (With iMovie 6, I just drag it in; not sure of the proper method with iMovie 9).
Is my description what you are doing and seeing?
Now, I should say that I have installed Apple's QuickTime MPEG component ($20): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
Once installed, it works in the background and you don't have to do anything at all.
Maybe having it is what makes Streamclip work for me. If you are doing what I listed above and still not getting Streamclip to give you a converted clip, try getting the QT component and seeing if that helps. (Sorry I can't do anything about the $, but well-worth it if it solves the problem).
(Thanks for the compliment).....and yes, we women do like 'cute' cameras!
But, the information offered about yours on the sites I could find was really not helpful. You can find info about .avi that will explain better than I. Mainly, it is a container file that can have videos of different formats within it. Often, but not always, when camera specs are delineated, the specific format will be given, but I could find only one site once that gave MPEG-4 as your camera's video format. However, when I went back to find it again, I was not able to located it. Made me wonder if it is incorrect.....especially since iMovie 9 can recognize MPEG-4.

  • Problems Importing Sony tg5v into iMovie

I used to be able to import videos from a Sony HDR - TG5v into iMovie.  Since upgrading to Lion it no longer imports.  I can see the camera and clips but when I try to import it freezes.  Any thoughts?

iMovie does not natively support 60P. Suggest you try 30P from Motion. When you export out of iMovie, it will be 30P anyway.

  • Importing Sony AVCHD into iMovie - "voodoo" codec?

I have recently purchased a new Sony TG1 HD camcorder which records AVCHD files onto Memory Sticks. I would like to archive this footage on an external HD and would like to use iMovie08 to import and save this footage. Obviously I want to save this footage as an exact digital negative ie uncompressed and exactly in the same format as it was originally recorded. In going over some old posts I found the term "voodoo" codec used to imply that iMovie08 is not capable of saving this footage properly as some strange codec is employed and as such some degradation to the original footage occurs. It was stated that only Final Cut Express (or Pro) was capable of saving the footage in the exact same quality as it was originally recorded in ie lossless. Any comments?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply. At present I am already doing as you suggested - creating a disk image of each full Memory Stick and saving these for archival purposes.
I am still curious to learn more about how iMovie08 converts the AVCHD files as compared to FileMaker Express. If I want to transcode the files into a usable format ie H.264(MPEG4) than will iMovie output the same result (from a quality standpoint) as Final Cut Express? Furthermore if I want to watch these recordings in full quality I can easily attach the Sony TG1 to my HD TV via HDMI. If iMovie transcodes these original files to MPEG4 and these were played back on my TV (via a media player) would they be of the same quality as those played back by directly attaching the camera to the TV as mentioned above?
    Thanks

  • Importing sony video into imovies

I am having problems seeing and therefore importing my videos from my sony Camcorder. Anyone know of any reason and what may be the solution

Have you ever imported successfully before?
I have had same problem in past, things that have helped:
Make sure camera is plugged into computer before you open iMovie, Some cameras need to be hooked up to power source to import. Make sure the camera is in play mode not record mode, then once camera is plugged into computer, try turning camera on and off, toggle between play and record, and see if it appears. try "import from camera" several times after each of these. AND it may take a few seconds to recognize the camera so be patient.
    good luck

  • Quality issues importing Sony HD into iMovie 8

I have a Sony HD AVCHD camera which uses SD cards. The only method to import the footage is with iMovie 8.
The program advises to use the "large" quality setting, and the footage came out really nicely. The resolution was small, but the quality was fantastic.
However when I selected the "full size" import the quality went terrible Lots of horizontal lines appeared, plus lots of double images when there is lots of movement. The size is good, but quality terrible.
Does anyone have any advice on how to import in both good quality and full size?

Any ideas what might be the problem?
Not really, but I would have persued the matter further by checking the source files manually. If you open your iMovie HD project package, you will find a folder named "Media" inside. This folder contains your "imported" files, as well as, any rendered transitions, titles, and/or special effects currently in use in the project. Any or all of these files may be movied (if you plan to manually "trash" the project) or copied (if you wand to keep the iMovie HD project) to another area of your hard drive where they would be accessable for normal import by iMovie '08. Further, if you want to import the current "assembled" timeline from iMovie HD, you can do the same to the file you will find in the "Shared Movies > iDVD" folder in your project. If such files cannot be imported either, then I would lean towards your have some sort of "problem install" of the application, software conflict problem, or possible problem at the system level.

  • Bought visual hub, still can't get my movies into imovie

Hi I posted in a different post about problems getting movies I made on my sony cybershot into imovie to edit. I was told if I bought visual hub that I could convert into another format that would be accepted in imovie. I've bought visual hub and tried several of the different formats that I was told should be accepted by imovie, but none of this is working. I can't figure out what is wrong here.

I'll be more blunt than Winston, did you try DV (in PAL or NTSC with anamorphic flag to match content)? This is "the Standard" for editing.

  • Problems importing into iMovie and which is the required space..

    Hi Karsten!
I could see that you know about video editing. And I have some problems and doubts I would like to ask.
The thing is that I have just bougth an ibook of 80 Gb hard disk RAM 512 MB Speed 1.67 GHz and I am trying to edit a documentary with it. The thing is that I started to importing images from a HDV 1080i Sony Camcorder into iMovie and the speed wasnt in real time, was slowing down to half of the original speed. I went to visit the help of iMovie it was saying when it happens is due to the desfragmentation of the disk, but I dont know if it is the real problem, it is a new computer, and how I can solve it.
And I also would like to know if I could have better results in the video importing and editing with an external hard driver other wise I could add more ram and more memory for the hard disk in the computer...
And the last thing, I would like to know how much space would I need in my computer for install and using Final Cut Pro and if it would be easy with more memory or an external hard drive...
Please Karsten or whoever who can have knowledge about these matter could help me. I really need it so much to start with my docu...
    Thank you

"..which is the difference between FCP and FCE?.."
FCE is Final Cut Express, a cheaper and 'cut-down' version of FCP (Final Cut Pro).
FCE changes HDV (hi-definition) video into a slightly different format called 'Apple Intermediate Codec' when it's importing HDV material - just like iMovie HD does. This means that importing is generally slower than importing ordinary DV, because the movie has to be converted while it's importing. On a G4 PowerBook or iBook HDV might import at half-speed, or take even longer (..maybe 4x 'real time'), as you've found.
The latest version of FCP can import HDV, and edit it, without any conversion, Apple says. But I don't know if that applies on any Mac, or if that needs a special capture card to be fitted into a PowerMac. In theory, I'd expect that importing and editing HDV using FCP HD 5 (..the latest version..) would be faster than on a PowerBook - because there's no conversion involved - but I can't say for certain till I receive my latest version of FCP (..I just did an Apple "cross-grade" to convert my FCP HD 4.5 into FCP HD 5).
HDV doesn't take up any more room on a tape than normal DV, because the high-definition is 'squashed' onto the tape, using MPEG-2 compression. Because iMovie HD and FCE HD can't handle this kind of compressed material directly, they convert it into the Apple Intermediate Codec, and that form of the video takes up more storage on a hard disc than the normal DV does!
So although normal DV uses about 13 gigabytes of hard disc space per hour of running time, the converted HDV (..converted into 'AIC'..) takes up, er ..I'm looking for a recent project ..most are on an external disc ..are here's a simple one: one-and-a-quarter minutes' worth uses 904 megabytes; nearly 1 gigabyte! ..Here's another: four-and-a-half minutes' worth takes up 6.5 gigabytes!
Using normal DV, 6.5 gigabytes would hold half an hour's worth of video, not 4.5 minutes' worth!
So you will need a big external hard disc to store hi-def footage. At least, with iMovie HD or FCE HD.
I don't know if FCP HD 5 would store imported footage in the original HDV format, that is with the same storage requirements of ordinary DV - like HDV tapes. If so, that means that you could store hi-def (..if you're using FCP HD 5..) in just the same amount of space as normal DV ..but I don't know for sure. Maybe you could ask in the FCP Discussions. I probably can't tell you till next week or so..
Where to get a 300gb hard disc? I'm sure there must be at least one shop, or electronics store, in Istanbul which sells them at reasonable prices. Otherwise, look online. There are many companies which now sell 300gb discs: Maxtor and LaCie, for example. But you do need one with a FireWire connection; not just USB. You don't need to buy from an Apple store: buy one from any computer shop ..an external hard disc for a PC works exactly the same ..but you must format it for use with a Mac, as described before.
All I know of Istanbul is Cumhuriyet Caddesi, Taksim Square, and the areas around what used to be the floating bridge, and the Spice Market, and round Haigha Sophia, but there must be lots of computer shops somewhere in the city.
"..I have never used iMovie for editing, I understood it is only good for capturing, sample and concise.." and it's also good for transitions, titles, adding photos and audio, adding video effects and for audio tweaking. And it integrates perfectly with iPhoto, iDVD, GarageBand ..and now 'iWeb'.

  • 8MM Tape into iMovie

Been transferring 8mm tapes into iMovie via my Sony TRV350 camcorder and firewire cable. Goal is to convert all of these to DVD via iDVD. 2 questions-
    1) Should the "Automatic DV Pillarboxing & Letterboxing" box be checked?
    2) On my camera settings, it has a A/V--->DV OUT option, which can be turned ON or OFF in the menu VCR settings. According to the manual, when it is OFF, it is "to output digital images and sound in analog format using your camcorder." When it is ON, it is "to output analog images and sound in digital format using your camcorder." I have tried importing with both settings (ON and OFF), and it imports fine both ways, and I haven't really noticed any difference. Do you think this actually matters? The 8mm tapes are analog and I want to convert them to digital format (DV), but it appears it's doing that with either setting.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

My iMovie version 4 doesn't have those options, but I am guessing they are for 16:9 and other widescreen formats. Your old 8mm video is likely standard 4:3 ration, so you probably don't need those checkboxes.
I think the DV Out only matters if you need the video to be present on the analog output jack on the camcorder (looks like a headphone jack like on an iPod). My thinks that that you always get video output present at the Firewire port but the analog port is probably off when you have DV Out set to ON. So as you found, if you are not using the analog port, it doesn't really matter.
    Enjoy,
    Patrick
p.s. after several years, I am finally up to analog tape #12 with two more after than to finally finish my analog to digital conversion using my old Sony TRV330 Digital8 camcorder.

  • Importing movies from Sony Handycam HDR-SR11 into iMovie HD 6.0.3

I am unable to open the .MTS clips in iMovie HD 6.0.3 that I've copied to my hard drive via a USB connection from the HDR-SR11. This would be my first time attempting to use iMovie and have troubleshooted to no avail. I am unable to find a clear answer as to whether the movies from this model Sony camcorder would work with my current version of iMovie. Would I need to upgrade and purchase iLife '09?

Hi swimnfred7 - welcome to the forum!
.MTS files are AVCHD- based - a form of MPEG format. iMovie HD needs .dv formatted material, imported into iMovie via a firewire connection. It may be possible to convert your files to .dv (not certain about that) using:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
It may be that you will instead need to use the latest imovie variant - iMovie 09.
I'm sure others will help you out here.

Is it possible to import 3d from the Sony 3D videocamera, model HDR TD 20VE into iMovie 11, edit and export the files to iDVD and produce a disc that plays on a 3d compatible DVD player?

Yes, you can purchase Lion as well as iPhoto and iMovie from the App Store. But before you can do that you must update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 by installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 update. Then you can sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password, locate the items you want, purchase them, and download them to your computer.
