Sony AVCHD clips "judder" after editing with iMovie9

The video plays back smoothly on a TV screen in 720p when played directly from the Sony HDR-TG7VE camcorder, but after editing in iMovie the panned shots judder. The movie looks so bad it is hardly possible to watch it. The picture also becomes much "softer". My workflow is: importing as Large 960x540 file, exporting to AppleTV via iTunes as Large file with the same settings. I am recording the movies on HD HQ setting, which I guess means 720p as well. I would appreciate any help how to fix it.

I feel your pain. I own a the previous model, a TG3 and was pretty dismayed by the amount of "judder" i saw after it had been through iMovie. As you state, when viewed natively off camera, image is smooth as silk. If you google AVCHD and Judder you will see a lot of comments on this (half of them mine!).
As a general comment, a lot of people have said with some AVCHD cameras and panning, the golden rule is DON'T. If you have to, do it at extremely slow speeds.
I wasn't really happy with this, as i'm convinced it's happening somewhere in the import/export of iMovie.
Look at my example i posted up a few months ago, is that what you are seeing?:
http://gallery.me.com/cosconstantinou#100376
This weekend, someone off a different forum presented me with a glimmer of hope. He also owns a TG3 and has been using Elgatos Turbo Hd usb convertor thingymebob. Look at this link, scroll down to the comments (at 9:46pm) and download his clips from yousendit:
http://techmoan.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/elgato-turbo264-hd-hands-on-user-test-a nd-review/
Check out the 720p 60fps at 10,000kps clip, it's STUNNING. I was so relieved to see the difference.
Trouble is, I don't know how to recreate this in iMovie. It's (the above clips) been encoded by the Elgato stick and not been through iMovie. If I view them on my Mac and open movie inspector it says it's "H.264/AVC" by format.
If i try and recreate these settings as an export in iMovie ("export to Quicktime) I don't get the same smooth pan-could be something to do with the "AVC" element mentioned in format.
I also noticed my picture getting far softer after being imported into iMovie. I guess as the AVCHD is being converted into AIC, that was always going to happen. It's basically 2nd generation from the off (AVCHD is too compressed for iMovie to edit it natively). If you are ever thinking of editing a larger size file, 1080i, then consider this guide and follow it to the T:
http://blog.davidglover.org/2009/03/creating-hd-video-with-imovie-09.html
except at step 4c (tick "both fields") and at 5a change the resolution to “1920 x 1080 HD” and increase the bitrate to 16200=makes it 1080p instead of 1080i and actually looks the same on your tv as straight off the camera (almost). I am using a PS3 to watch my movies back, which is more capable than Apple TV i believe.
I'm sorry I cant be of more help. I have been hunting high and low for an answer to the judder issue and still haven't found anything concrete. Some blame the AVCHD format, some say its our CMOS rolling shutter, none can tell me why it doesn't happen straight off the camera, but does via iMovie (or other video editing programs apparently).
If you are recording in 720p, then you video is progressive, so it cant be an interlacing issue.
Best of luck with your search, keep me posted/update this thread if you find any answers and if you do nothing else, download the clips from the Techmoan link above and check out the one i mentioned. It's taken me 3 months of searching to find anything close to that as a possible solution.

  • Why are frame sizes increasing after editing with Nik plug-ins?

I’m using the Nik Collection of plug-ins with Aperture, and have discovered that the frame size of the resulting edits always end up larger than the original - sometimes much larger.
The original image starts as 4592 x 3448 but after editing, the longest side of the resulting image is typically over 5000, 6000 or even 7000 pixels.
I recently worked on a cropped image that started at 4138 x 2759 and ended up at 7361 x 4908, after editing with a combination of Dfine, Viveza, Color Efex + Silver Efex.  If I export a version during the editing process, and then carry out futher editing, the frame size increases again.
I’m exporting from Aperture using the TIFF - Original Size (16 bit) setting.
Can anyone tell me what’s going on here?  I’m concerned that the quality of the images is being compromised by the enlargement.
I'm using the latest set of Nik plug-ins, with Aperture 3.2.4 on a MBP running 10.6.8

    Keli
In order to open Aperture in 32-bit mode by default you can right-click on the application icon, select "Get Info" and check the box marked "Open In 32-bit Mode" (or you can continue to run it by default in 64-bit mode and just get forced to re-open the app anytime you need to use plug-ins that can only run in 32-bit mode).
    hope this helps!

  • Contact notes: MFE lost formatting after edit with...

The text in my contact notes field loses the formatting. End of line is not being kept in the device. In Outlook the text remains normally formatted with proper end of lines.
I have this problem with MFE (I use the last versions of MailForExchange). The problem does not happen with Roadsync.
    Tested with E65, E71.
In Outlook, I store lot of text in the Notes Field of each of my Contacts. After syncing with the mobile device, I check the content in the device and the text appears as one sentence. The End Of Line EOL (input by enter key) is being ignored.
If I create the contact on the mobile device and edit the contact notes only on the mobile device this does not happen. As soon as I edit the notes field in outlook and after the next sync, the text appears as all lines together without EOL.
Switching back to Roadsync and resyncing all data: all contact notes are properly displayed in the mobile device too.
Does anyone know how to avoid that Outlook messes up the formatting of the contact notes in the device?

i saved some information in the task boxes, which somehow do hold the original format. it is a better than nothing option since the contact details permitted in n71 are so sparse.

  • After editing with photoshop and saving, can't find it

    1) After editing a photo with Photoshop, save it, I can't find it. Only the original unedited photo is in my library.
    2) I tried adding a name extension to the DSC...., but can't find that either.
    3) Where can I resize photos using Iphoto editing?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Are you using Photoshop as described here:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.  3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu).  This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Photos fail to print after editing with clone stamp tool and layers

After editing using the clone stamp tool and using layers the photos fail to print.  I even tried a simple crop edit and the photo failed to print.
    Photos print without editing.

Im working on a Mac OX 10.9.4 and Photoshop Elements 12 for Mac
I tried printing from Organizer and editor and I have the image saved on my desktop
I don't receive an error when I try to print. The message usually reads: Printing, 2% complete or 13% complete.
I have left it sit overnight but it never produced a photo.
The printer is new: HP Envy 5400 and I have no problem printing photos from I Photo.

  • How do I retain the original HD standards after editing with iMovie ?

    Hello,
I have a camcorder that uses AVCHD. The image size is 1080 x 1440 and the audio codec is Dolby Digital at 448 kbps.
I can import these movies in to iMovie with no problem at all, likewise I can edit them and make a project.
However, when it come to sharing or publishing the project, the highest quality option I have is 'Apple TV' at a resolution of 960x540 with the sound being linear PCM stereo.
Is it possible to retain the original frame size of 1080 x 1440 with the original audio codec of Dolby Digital at 448 kbps ?

Well, being honest, I don't know that I need this. I was thinking that if I retain the original file size I would retain the quality.
I plan to store my finished project not on DVD but on my PS3 which has an external drive to hold my home movies.
When I view the original files in the 'raw' AVCHD format on the PS3 the image is ever so slightly better and I get to use the Dolby Digital soundtrack.
When I view my finished iMovie projects the frame size
(but not the picture) is reduced and this seems to be causing some very slight judder during panning shots. Also the soundtrack is just linear PCM.
I was theorising, that by retaining the original settings I would remove the slight judder and get to keep the digital soundtrack.
Is this the right approach ? or is something else causing these two issues ?

  • Video quality awful after editing with iMovie

    Hope someone can help.
When i edit gopro camera footage in iMovie the quality is awful after exporting finalized clips/footage.
If i play the clip imported directly from the camera it appears in crystal clear HD. As soon as i do anything with it it degrades to the point where it almost looks like a 'negative 'shot.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    1. Ask on the iMovie forum, that's the best place for iMovie help.
    2. When you get there, ask about export settings. Sounds like that's where the issue is.

  • Iphoto crashes after editing with PhotoshopCS2

My Iphoto 6.0.5 crashes and closes after I edit a photo via right-click on external editor (with photoshop CS2), when I safe and go back to Iphoto it crashes and closes.

This is the Photoshop Color Profile bug in action. Here's a solution developed with Apple by Stuart Chapman.
    1. Shutdown any running apps (esp iPhoto/Elements).
    2. Locate the 'Embed Chosen Profile' AppleScript in your Library\Scripts\ColorSync folder on your Mac OS X start-up disk.
    3. Make an alias of the above script (⌘L) and then move the alias to your desktop or other convenient location.
    4. Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library Folder (I just used Copy 'n' Paste from the Finder).
    5. Locate the problematic photos from within your iPhoto Library's sub-folders and drag them (a folder at a time if necessary) to the 'Embed Chosen Profile' script alias on your desktop.
    6. The Script should run and ask you to select a ColorSync Profile. Navigate to System\Library\ColorSync\Profiles and select the 'sRGB Profile' (this is the profile recommended by Apple).
    7. The script will then embed the selected sRGB ColorSync profile into each image that was contained in the folder that you dragged onto the script icon at step 5.
You will have to run the 'Embed Chosen Profile' script against photos stored in both your Originals and Modified folders within your iPhoto Library Folder. You do not need to run the script against the photos in your Data folder (because the Data folder only contains thumbnail images).
The process wasn't too bad for me because I only have 1000 or so photos. It took about 30 minutes. Unfortunately the script doesn't process folders that contain sub-folders (which is pretty much how iPhoto organises your iPhoto Library). So you have to select the 'actual' parent folder that contains the images that you want to fix.
Once all of your images are fixed, you can restart iPhoto and see if it has resolved the problem.
If, like me, you've experienced numerous iPhoto crashes due to this issue, it's probably worth rebuilding your iPhoto Library, just in case any of the crashes have caused the library database files to become corrupted. To do this, shutdown iPhoto and then restart it again whilst holding down the CMD (⌘) and OPT (⌥) keys. Then select the option to Rebuild the iPhoto Library.

  • 'jagged edges' due to interlacing after editing with 2 cams. How to remove?

I just finished a project in FCE, combining footage from a Sony HVR-Z7 and a Canon HV30. As the shooting itself took place some time ago, I'm not sure if the Canon was in 'plain HD' (which means interlaced, I presume) or in '25 pf', (which means Progressive), but I'm afraid it was in 'interlaced' mode. The Sony was certainly in Progressive mode. After lengthy editing, the finished movie looks perfect on a computer monitor, but on my plasma tv I get jagged edges in the Canon HV30-images. Not all of the time, though. Can this be corrected in the edited sequence in any way? I don't want to start all over again...

Does it look like this on the sloping back of the car?
I have only discovered 2 ways of getting rid of it.
    1. Down-convert your HDV to DV in the camera as you are capturing and edit in a DV sequence or
    2. Edit as AIC and then drag your edited AIC sequence into a new DV sequence. Do not alter anything but render it (which takes a long time) and then File>Export>QT Movie.
P.S. My videos are not blurred. If I remove the blur in the picture, the jagged edges disappear!

  • Stretched photos after editing with photoshop CS5

When I crop a photo with photoshop CS5 and then go and review it in Iphoto the picture looks like the unedited version in the "events" but when i double click on it it appears streteched. How do I fix this?
Also, when I edit a photo with CS5 (for ex: cool a picture if it is too warm) then go to look at it in iphoto it looks like the unedited version and once I click on the photo I can see the edited version.

The following is how Photoshop should be used from within iPhoto:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Vertical offset problem when printing labels after editing with Crystal Reports

    Hello,
We are still using the RDC component of Crystal reports in some of our C++ Software components. Label design is done with a very old Version 8.5 of Crystal, the Clients use the 10.5 runtime for printing.
This was running on Windows XP and Server 2003 for a Long time. Recently we changed to Server 2008 R2 (english) and Windows 7 (de) on the Clients. Again we installed CR 8.5 on the Server for Label design and a 10.5 runtime on the Clients for printing. Now something strange happened. If we just open a Report file with CR on the Server and save it (doing no changes), there is a Problem with printing on the Clients. The line spacing is now wrong. It´s about 5th the value as it should be. This only happens on the Client. The reports still print ok from the preview Windows of CR on the Server.
However, we have to Change Labels. As a Workaround, we installed CR also on one of the Windows 7 Clients. And this is working. We can save Labels unchanged and they are printed with the correct line spacing on the Clients.
Of Course, this should be solved in the future, because the Clients are placed in our production area and it´s not a good place for sitting and changing Labels.
i´v no idea what could be the reason?
    Greetings, Jörg

This might be due to differences in default/specified printer (or printer driver) across the machines involved.

  • I loose my files after editing with photoshop and saving.

I can "see" the file title listed in the photoshop save dialogue box but can find no way to access them again. They do not appear in aperature and fail to be found using any search string from finder.

Before you sent the image to Photoshop as the External Editor, did you see new version (either .psd or .tif) that Aperture created for the purpose?  If so, then is that version still in the strip of images, or in the Browser?

  • Problem with preview after editing

I looked around the forum topics for this but I am not even sure what the problem would be called since I am a first time user.
I have this problem where I add clips fine, and I am able to add text to them and what not by typing the text and then dragging the text thing over the photo I want to add text on and it usually separates it into two photos (1 with text and 1 short one). But.....
Then I run into problems with playback. At first I can see the little red indicator of where I am in the movie moving with the timeline and showing the seconds changing, but then later on (the further I get into adding clips and production) in the project I will go to play the clip before my edit (with all clips selected so it should play until i it stop) and it will not show the indicator moving and only plays about 2 seconds of the clip before stopping. It's almost like when you only select one clip to play and it stops abruptly after except this doesnt move through the clip at all. I have had to save, close down and re open but now I am at the point where I do that after every change.
    Anyone else had this?
    Tom

By "rendering", David means that the video footage has to be 're-created' to include the text which you've added. The computer has to rebuild those 'titled' sections of your video bit-by-bit.

  • Optimal Settings for Converting Sony AVCHD .MTS Footage for DVD Delivery

I am starting with footage from a Sony HDR-SR7 camcorder. Since iMovie is still kind of wonky with this, I am going to batch convert all my clips using the VeggieTools plug-in scripting for *Sony Vegas Pro* (under my Windows partition of my MacBook Pro). I can convert over each file into a new clip in a lot of different formats.
My goal is to *bring the footage over to Mac and edit it in Final Cut Express.* Eventually, I will be mastering and delivering on DVD (most likely through iDVD). And I am looking for guidance.
First, I have a lot of choices for the conversion format. But I am not sure what to use. I know that the original is upper field dominant and HD in size (16:9). I will eventually be going to standard DVD NTSC (with letterboxing top and bottom to fill up the format space of the 4:3 aspect ratio). And I assume that is lower field dominant.
Do I need to find some setting that lets me convert the footage to double the 29.97 fps rate while interpolating the fields? Or do I not have to worry about this? I am worried that bringing the size of the footage down will create some weird artifacts if this isn't taken care of first.
I guess the main question is, since I am looking to pretty much just edit these clips together and won't be doing much in the way of special effects, what's the best way or format to choose to *turn the HD footage into high quality SD footage* that I can quickly trim and string together *in Final Cut Express*...
Not sure if I gave enough info. I will be checking often in anyone wishes to try and tackle this one and needs more details...
    And thanks for listening!!

OK my fault for not being clear on an extremely important point: I don't need anamorphic widescreen. Sorry to waste your brainpower on my lack of clarity. Mea culpa.
I intend to show this only on a standard definition TV from a standard definition DVD player. The "letterboxing" I spoke of is intentional on my part inside the standard def 4:3 frame. I will just let there be black bars at the top and the bottom.
So I don't need full super high resolution during this transfer (IF iMovie hadn't stopped recognizing my Sony AVCHD MTS camera after the first batch of video I collected, this wouldn't even be an issue. Been spending days on the forums trying all the solutions for the rest of my footage...).
But now that I have a workaround, I am just mostly confused about what to do about the field order (and thus, the frame rate) and the resizing (for convenience in size and playback speed). The original is upper first, and I am pretty sure that the QuickTime Movie I eventually make for iDVD should be lower field first (haven't tried tackling the can of worms of ideal MOV settings for an iDVD standard def disc yet).
