Sony AX2000 transfer to FCP

I am looking to buy a Sony AX2000 for my productions. Can I transfer all the files shot in HD into Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 while using my two macs, one is a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC, Mac OSX 10.5.8 and my other one is a Dual 2 GHz Power PC G5, Mac OSX 10.5.8? I do NOT want to render. We use tapes now, and capture and scratch. We want to upgrade to PRO HD cards to save us time in productions. Can someone please help me and give us the best options for NOT rendering! Do they come in as MOV files?

I have the Z7U and like it. It records to tape and compact flash, so you have your backup. You have to download a Sony utility to log and transfer the footage into FCP. In log and transfer you can't preview the HDV footage which is what the Z7U shoots. So basically I import the whole clips and edit in FCP. Isn't a problem for me, but may be for some. Can preview other formats. A lot of people don't like HDV. I sometimes capture mine as ProRes through an AJA IoHD, but always render as ProRes, so get around the HDV most of the time.
However, I see you are using a PowerPC machine. Don't know how the tapeless format works with that. I would for sure do research on that before purchasing a new camera. I have an Intel machine (originally used on a Dual core intel) using FCP 6.0.6.
It is a fairly large, heavy camera. The picture quality is fabulous. I notice improved quality over my old Sony FX1.
Depending on what you are using it for, many people might prefer something smaller and lighter, which is what I would do if I was in the market for a second camera.

  • FCP settings to read Sony AX2000 SD 480/30p files?

How should I set FCP prefs/settings to be able to read (log & transfer) Sony AX2000 SD 480/30p (MPEG-2 PS) files? These files have been downloaded to a hard disk in their original Sony folders.

Sony has like 2 or 3 plugins for FCP's Log & Transfer interface.  You need to download and install them.  I'm not sure what the URL is on Sony's site, but you'll need Sony's plugins for sure.

  • How can I download a Sony AX2000 to FCP?

How can a Sony Ax2000 download footage in 1080i, 30p, and 24p recorded settings to FCP with so many options available?  I have used Imovie for years and mastered it. My Sony sr10 and Imovie were a snap to download, but now with the use of my AX2000, and wanting to use the FCP I bought a while back, and have waited to tryout, I am anxious to use FCP for the first time.  Plus, FCP seems very technical at this point.  It`s like going from a motor vehicle, to a space shuttle.  It doesn`t appear as easy as it seems.  Needing help!  Needing answers!  Thanks, Rob.

Shane's Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should
If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/trashing_fcpprefs.html
    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.
    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

  • Sony EX XDCAM from FCP MAC cannot be recognized by PC

Not sure if this is a quick fix, but my CGI guy - who works by remote - cannot get his PC to recognize my XDCAM EX 108024p clips from my MAC - which I have exported as MXFs using the SONY XDCAM export option in Export>using qt conversion. I sent him the link to the driver, and he said it installed fine - but still his computer was not recognizing the MXF file. Does he need a program to convert?
Basically, I am looking for a lossless way to give him my Sony EX1 files that he can work with on his PC (in studio max) and then export to a lossless format that I don't have to render in FCP.
Any tips or suggestions most welcome. This is my first time editing a program with EX 1 files in FCP.

I'm using the Sony XDCAM transfer 2.5.1 to bring in the clips from card into FCP. The clip browser I downloaded yesterday and I tried to get it to recognize an MXF file that I had exported from FCP using the sony xdcam plug-in (but it did not). I guess I can only use the MP4s to convert to MXF? Is there a difference going from FCP compared to Clip Browser? I want to be able to export cut sequences so that the CGI guy can composite...

  • I am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize

i am trying to capture from Sony HDV 1080i VTR FCP giving an error of not able to initialize. I am not able to capture the content in DV mode. i am using a Firewire 800 to 400 converter and a 6 pin firewire cable to connect to the SonyHDV VTR. Please suggest me how do i do this.

The 800-400 converter plugs have proved a problem for this. What version of the software are you using. It sounds like an older version of FCP, if so you should ask your question on the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • Refresher for log and transfer in FCP 7

    Hi,
I need a bit of a refresher to using log and transfer in FCP 7 what setting do I use for XDCAM ? Do I set it to AVCHD?
    Please help
    Thank you
    Jeff

Have you loaded the xdcam plug in?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2721
Otherwise, I think you have the choice of keeping it as xdcam or converting to prores when you log and transfer. xdcam are smaller file sizes, while prores is generally less taking on the system.

  • Sony A1U connection to FCP--iLink only???

I'm trying to hook up my Sony A1U to my FCP. I beleive I have the seetings correct in FCP. I'm not getting a connection. I looked in the camera manual and I beleive it says I need an iLink cable to import the video. (where still photos can go firewire).
Am I correct in what I'm reading and intretting??

iLink is Sony's nomenclature for FireWire, so I'd say you either have a bad cable, bad port, or (more likely) incorrect settings.

i want to transfer my fcp to my new macbook.how can i unstall the current one and activate on the another. i just wonder i can't see any serial number on it!!

    Yes.
It's always useful to keep a backup copy as well in case things go wrong.
It's much quicker than having to download again.
You can keep it on hard drives, memory sticks or cards, DVDs etc.

  • FCP 7 and Sony AX2000

I'm considering getting this camera. However, I've heard and read some bad things about FCP not really liking AVCHD. But at the same time, my $300 Panasonic takes AVCHD video and FCP 7 "logs and transfers" them with absolutely no problem.
I guess I have two questions. Does anyone have any experience with this camera and FCP 7? And has FCP 7 resolved the AVCHD issues it had in past versions of FCP?
Just looking for some insight before I drop some coin on this camera/format.
    Thanks!

What am I to make of the fact that my AVCHD Panasonic files "log and transfer" with no problems?
That Panasonic talks to Apple to make sure that their cameras work with FCP. Meaning that FCP will see the card structure, see all the clips, and be able to transcode them all without problem. Unlike say SONY, who makes a new camera, and if you record audio a certain way, a 10 min clip will take 4 hours to import. And, the timecode you set in the camera didn't get transferred to FCP. That's a problem.
At least, I don't know what the potential fall-out might be, as I will use Compressor to render the final version anyway.
Listed above...slow import, missing important data...and often FCP is completely unable to import the footage because the AVCHD format is different enough that FCP can't read the card structure, or can't convert the footage. This is VERY common with Canon consumer cameras, and some Sony consumer cameras. Then you need to look at outside solutions, like ClipWrap. Doesn't matter what you use to render out, if you can't get the footage into the computer in the first place...you have nothing to compress!

  • Having a prob importing a large file from a sony DR 60 external drive via log a transfer in FCP this is the first time this has happened have the sony plug. HDisc compatibility is sorted as the first 2 short clips are imported. Any advice will be welcome

problem importing a large file from a Sony DR60 external drive to FCP. Never had a problem before first two shot clips are captured in log and transfer but the larger 2 hour clip only downloads the first few seconds. Any advice?

I can think of 2 things to check.
    1. The Scratch disc has plenty of space.
    2. System Settings>Scratch Disc does not have a restriction in the Limit Capture/Export File Size Segment To:

  • Sony CX-160 camcorder compatible in Log and Transfer in FCP X?

Looking at Apple FCP X compatibility list and it is not on there.  I know this list is not anywhere accurate.  Camera is AVCHD .mts file format.
Anyone have this camcorder to confirm this first hand either way?
Thanks in advance. Do not have the FCP X yet.  Just seeing what I am getting myself into.

+Have you updated to the latest version of FCP?+
No, I'm currently running 6.0 with QT 7.2 on OS 10.4.10. In searching the tech forums I'm finding a lot of people having problems with P2 and FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.3 (which requires OS 10.4.11) so I've steered clear.
    +How have you copied the p2 volumes?+
Yes. The P2 volumes have been copied to hard drives. I'm not anywhere near the P2 cards at this point.
    +Where are they located?+
    LaCie 500 drives
+Did you write protect to the p2 card before copying?+
You mean on the original P2 cards? I don't know, but the files have already successfully been copied to the current hard drives. I can convert them to QT's using Log and Transfer without any trouble. What I can't do is see them in the Log and Transfer viewer before I import. I'd like to be able to do that so I can break them down into more manageable QT files on transfer.

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • Sony HDR-HC3 to FCP to Color to FCP to Mac Mini

    Hi,
My objective is to play our edited family videos using our Mac Mini(2.0 GHz Core 2) on a Sony 52" LCD at full 1080 resolution. The video is stored on a Firewire attached 1 TB LaCie external disk.
I use a Sony HDR-HC3 video camera (HDV 1440x1080i 25 fps) and use FCP 6.0.4 for editing. I have recently been learning Color for grading.
    1. Currently reading footage into FCP as ProRes 422. Footage comes in with the following profile:
    Sequence Preset: Apple ProRes 422 1440x1080 50i 58 kHz
    Capture Preset: HDV-Apple ProRes 422
Current captured footage I'm working with has a data rate of 12.5 MB
    2. Once editing is complete, I "Send To" Color and perform the grading
    3. From Color, I "Send to FCP". (It asks "Change graded FCP seq. to match the QT export codec?" not sure whether I click Yes or No here)
    4. After selecting Yes, the footage returned back to a new sequence in FCP now has the following profile:
    Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    1920x1080
    21.6 MB/sec
From reading the Apple documentation, I was expecting something funny to happen coming back from Color.
    5. I then send this sequence to Compressor where I select the "Apple | Formats | Quicktime | H.264" preset in the hope that I can render out an H.264 1920x1080 file to play on the Mac Mini. It renders it but the Mini can't play the video smoothly.
As I am still learning, I would appreciate any suggestions on an alternative workflow that can lead me to a 1080 video file that can play smoothly on the Mac Mini.
The Apple TV preset renders a video that works smoothly on the Mini, but I'm hoping for the full resolution.
    Regards, Tony

    Hi Shane,
Thanks so much for responding. Great tutorial also. And I wasn't conscious of any 'drone'...
Yes, I've tried to have the Log and Transfer recognize the card (through both the card reader and lately, by using the camera as a deck but without luck). The card reader and camera mount on my desktop as NO NAME and when I ADD VOLUME I scroll down to devices and click on NO NAME but L&T doesn't recogize the source and nothing happens. That's why I went in to see if the AVCHD folder might be recognized and got that invalid directory message. Following your tutorial I went into preferences button on the right hand upper corner of the L&T interface and selected the AVCHD - Apple Prores LT path in case that made a difference, but no go. Any other suggestions/thoughts?
    Cheers, Mark
