Sony Camcorder and Quicktime

Hi there,
Just got the Sony DCR SR-60, and i want to edit the clips from the camcorder using imovie and create DVDs out of the clips which i edit from imovies. Currently i can't do that cuz none of the application can read the mpeg clips from the camcorders. Will getting the quicktime pro enable my powerbook to convert to the format that i can eventually edit the clips and create dvds? thanks.
If getting the quicktime Pro still unable to read the clips from the SR-60, what do i have to get to allow me to enable me to be able to edit the clips and create DVD? i don't need anything fancy, just the basics...

Will getting the quicktime pro enable my powerbook to convert to the format that i can eventually edit the clips and create dvds? No. QT Pro does not "add" any new codecs to the QT Player. What it does do is turn on features such as the saving and conversion of "fully supported" files which you can already view. Unfortunately, "muxed" files such as MPG (MPEG-1) and MPEG (MPEG-2, VOB, VRO, etc) are not "fully supported by QT. When converting MPG files, the audio is lost. The QT MPEG-2 component allows video data to be viewed but provides only limited support for audio playback and no audio conversion.
If getting the quicktime Pro still unable to read the clips from the SR-60, what do i have to get to allow me to enable me to be able to edit the clips and create DVD?I presonally recommend the purchase of the QT MPEG-2 component from Apple ($19.99) and using it in conjunction with MPEG Streamclip (free). Streamclip provides elementary editing features like trimming segments, cropping, scaling, adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and/or volume, etc. More importantly, it handles the Stereo AC3 audio used by your camera but not supported by QT. If full editing features are required and you haqve an editor like iMovie, then files can be converted to iMovie compatible DV files using the "Export to DV" file option. The same DV files (if edited sufficiently in Streamclip) can be dropped to iDVD directly for re-converstion back to MPEG-2 and burning to DVD.

  • Sony camcorder and imovie 6

I have a movie on my camcorder and i can get it to download into imovie. it shows up in DVD player. support had me download Mactheripper, i guess it ripper the video and automaticlly puts it in imovie. i can't figure out macthe ripper. i need help!!!!!! pam

    Oh, I see.
iMovie 6 can only import footage that is on miniDV tapes, not the disks or memory cards or hard drive camcorders. The video is probably MPEG 2 or 4, a compressed format that iMovie cannot read. If you want to use that type in iMovie, you need to convert it to DV format. Conversion may cause some loss of quality. You can use MPG Streamclip for the conversion. Whatever you do, do not put a mini disk into the disk drive of your Mac. It can get stuck and damage the drive, since the Mac is not designed to be used with these mini disks.

  • JVC camcorder and Quicktime

Hi guys, I have tried this question in Quicktime forum but I think the Pro's will have the answer for me, only 1 reply there.
I am considering buying a JVC GZMG50EK hard drive camcorder and need some help with the file format.
I have been told that when a file is downloaded to the Mac it needs to be converted through JVC software to open in Quicktime, is this correct?
I thought I could just click on the file and it would go through Quicktime as the default programme. Is it something to do with converting from mpeg2 to mpeg 4?
I have also read that there is a plug in which will enable quicktime to open mpeg2.
I am trying to keep workflow to a minimum and I am told that the JVC software takes 5 mins to convert a 16 second clip.
I am a pro stills photographer but have'nt got a clue about video!
    Is this info correct?
Can anyone help before I buy?

you dont say why you want to buy a hard disc recording camcorder, it woould be an interesting and precarious choice.
this camera is a domestic product, it is not a professional quality camera, it would be a good purchase for home use to easily make DVD video's of your family events, without using tape.
the camera is designed to do the following:
record an event onto the hard drive then use the video files to make a DVD video disc so that it can be played on a DVD video player.
it uses video quality recordings exactly the same as DVD video, the hard drive records MPEG2 video which is what DVD video is. normally before making the DVD, DV video from tape has to be compressed and converted to MPEG 2 taking many times longer to encode than to play, this camera does it in real time while recording.
As DVD is a highly compressed format to be used as an end product it is not best suited for further editing
JVC has a technology alliance with Microsoft Windows based software, therefore the software will not work with a Mac. The camera is supplied with DVD authoring software, you will need a recent fast Windows XP based computer to make it run.
I have a professional JVC camera which has the ability to record to an onboard hard drive. I was offered the hard drive at a give away price so the dealer could use me as a test bed. I declined and went for tape to give me the quality and performance I need.
There should be a very good reason to choose a hard drive camera instead of tape to justify such a purpose.
It sounds as if you would be far better buying a mini DV tape based camcorder from JVC, theres lots to choose from.

  • Sony Camcorder and an ibook G4 - a love/hate relationship?

Hi, I'm new to using a Mac and i'm keen to edit our summer videos, shot using a Sony Handycam DCR-HC18E.
I don't think it's compatible -so what do i have to do?
Is it worth keeping the Handycam or do i launch it up the Garden?
    Hope you can help

As Karsten says (..at least, I think that's what he says!! nudge-nudge-wink-wink!..) that camera is completely compatible with iMovie.
Sony's description says (click on this link) "i.LINK (DV) In: NO, i.LINK (DV) Out: YES", which means, as Karsten said(?!) that you can feed DV OUT of the camcorder, but not back IN again from your Mac after editing, but that's no big problem: burn a DVD of it instead.
Sony don't pack a FireWire/i.Link/DV cable in the box (you can't use a USB cable for video) with the camcorder, but you can get the 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire/i.Link cable which Karsten suggests at any Jessops/Curry's.digital/Dixons/PC World/Maplin/John Lewis or other electronics shop, and that will connect the cam to your Mac.
P.S: Karsten; it's a lovely day here in Haidhausen ..I'll be hobbling up to Herr Modl's camera and electronics shop in half a mo'..

  • Using My Digital Video Camcorder and Quicktime...any Help???

I recently purchased a digital camcorder that I am trying to get to work with my Mac. I also just purchased Quicktime 7.0.4 PRO which I am hoping can convert the files from my camcorder to a viewable Mac format.
I am using OSX 10.4.6. The camera is a DXG-305 and the software written for the camera is for PC only. When I connect the camera to my Mac I get a folder to pop up of whatever I have captured but it shows files that are in a .ASF format. When I click on the file to try to open it , it wants to open in Microsoft Windows. When I go into Quicktime PRO and under File try to "Open File"- the file does not even become highlighted or selectable? Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open? If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac? Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO? I am looking for ANY solution to this dilemma? Thank you-
    John

Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open?
Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
ADDED: Sorry about the duplication, too slow with my response.

  • Sony camcorder and MAC!!

PLEASE help! I have spent several hours trying to get my movies onto my computer. I have downloaded all the recommended programs (MPEG streamclip, quicktime plug-in) and I have not been able to get my video onto the computer. What are the exact steps? I can't exchange the camcorder!

Waht type of camera do you have? Unless it is a hard drive or DVD camera, you should be able to connect it with a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire and just import without converting the files.

  • Newbie question:- Is my Sony camcorder compatible with iMovie?

Hi, I have been using Sony and Panasonic camcorder mini-DVs for some time and have been creating DVDs using a Sony notebook with very clear and crisp videos.
Recently, I used my new Macpro to try out iMovie and iDVD. While mini-DV tapes created using Panasonic gives the same satisfactory videos, those recorded using Sony is giving me dismal output with facial features quite blur even when rendering using Professional Quality. Can anyone advise?
I must confess I really like the iMovie software compared to the one on my Sony notebook! So I hope to make use of it.

That's odd since MiniDV tapes are digital and should be the same. I've used a $2000 Sony camcorder and $200 Canon and have not noticed any difference with my DVDs when the recording speeds are 1 hour per 60 minute tape, and the encoding process is the same.

  • Sony camcorder & IMovie

My mac book pro is one year old and my IMovie 11 software is 8.0.6.  I just got a Sony camcorder and I see   I need IMovie 9.0.1 to download from the memory from the camcorder   Do I have to buy a new software package for this?  I haven't seen any software updates for the 9.0.1.  Thank you.

While Apple sells editing video on the Mac as a seamless and effortless activity, there is a huge technical base that it all sits upon. You will have to learn a great about that stuff.
One place to start in in the iMovie forum. They can get you started and point you toward some of the huge resources available.

  • HT3775 What do I need to download to play MPEGs from my sony camcorder on my macbook pro?

    Hi,
I have a sony camcorder and have recorded some mpegs, but my macbook pro says there is not anavailable codex to play it?
Do I need to download something else? does anyone know how to do it?
    Thanks

You can probably import into a modern version of iMovie (8 or higher).
If you just wish to view the videos the free VLC player can play them back.

  • I downloaded a film from a sony camcorder to iMovie and then burned to a DVD in iDvd. When showing it on my TV their is a shimmering in certain edges.

I downloaded a movie from a Sony camcorder to iMovie, did some editing and transfered it to iDVD where I burned it onto a DVD.
When I showed it on my TV I had shimmering on certain edges. Has anyone had this happen and if so how did you eleminate it?

    Hi
    A. Do not Use - Share to iDVD - in any iMovie version at all !
    B. Start a BRAND NEW iDVD project
    C. in iMovie'08 to 11 -  Share to Media Browser and as LARGE - NOT HD or other resolution as quality will be even worse
    - in iMovie HD6 - just close it and from within iDVD import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it)
    - FinalCut - Export as QuickTime Movie - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION - AT ALL !
    D. When in iDVD - see to that in the Lay-out menu (when it looks like a box-plott) there ARE NOTHING in the upper left most box (Auto Start box). As this overruns any Menu.
    E. Save as a DiskImage - TEST this first - befor burning any DVDs

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD AND VIEW THE MOVIES I HAVE MADE WITH MY SONY CAMCORDER HDR-XR550VE?

Thanks for being so helpful. I chased up the web-link but was not sure it would work with .cpi, so didn't opt to buy it.
Then I went on to the Sony support page and found this - which works fine, and has very clear instructions.

  • I have a Sony Camcorder DCR-TRV33 and have hooked the firewire cable to my iMac.  However, it doesn'

I have a Sony DCR-TRV33 camcorder and it hooked to my iMac with the firewire cable but the iMac doesn't seem to recognize the camera.  The camera is set to VCR.  This particular model is not included in the supported camera list for ilife but seems to be compatible from everything else I have read.  Anyone have any ideas as to what to do??

To import from this camera, you need a Firewire cable.
Sony's name for FireWire is i.Link, so that is where you need to plug in.
If you have a relatively new Mac, it will have Firewire 800. You will need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable. You can find them inexpensively at www.monoprice.com.  If you have an older iMac, it may have Firewire 400 (or it may have both). In this case, you need the  6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable. Some companies sell adapters that will convert a 6 pin to 4 pin cable to 9 pins. Avoid these. They do not work.

  • Macbook Air and Sony camcorder hard drive problems

My new Mac Book Air will not respond in I Movie to my new Sony camcorder with internal hard drive but will sometimes with the SD card.....can anyone give me a clue please.

I opted for the 11-inch mainly due to portability, but went with the 128GB model. Once I have all my critical apps installed (including Adobe Lightroom and CS4), I still have about 85GB free.
One of the reasons I got the MBA is for traveling and downloading photos from my camera while on the road. If the 128 isn't enough, I have a WD Passport drive that I can use for backup & freeing up space should the need arise. So far, I haven't had to connect the external drive, so I'm happy I opted for the 11-inch. The size is perfect for portability without compromising keyboard size or resolution.
