Sony camcorder help

So I just got this new Sony HDR-CX12 camcorder. It uses a memory stick for storage. So the last couple of times I hooked it up to iMovie it worked great but, yesterday i hooked it up and iMovie didn't reconize it as a camcorder. I've reinstalled iMovie, I've used a different memory stick, i even hooked it up to a different computer and it still didn't work. I'm at a loss of what to do. Please help.

Thanks for being so helpful. I chased up the web-link but was not sure it would work with .cpi, so didn't opt to buy it.
Then I went on to the Sony support page and found this - which works fine, and has very clear instructions.

Sony camcorder not recognized on Imac?

I have an older Sony Camcorder Digital 8 mm. I plugged into my new Imac via USB cable and there is no recognition that a device is connected. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It needs to be connected via firewire (all tape-based cameras do).
Does the model appear here?

Also, try this:
Open the Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder) and set the default audio output to 44100hZ. Then make sure that the audio output of the camera is set to 16 bits and not 12 bits. Try the camera again.

Why isnt my new sony camcorder compatible with mac?

just bouught a new sony camcorder 1080p model HDR-CX110 and i recorded a video and took a couple photos,i started reading the manual and it says the enclosed softeare is not compatible with mac, they gave a website for mac users to go to for help, on the site it states that only still images can be transfered to a mac. Sure enough i pluged it n and only the stills show up,not the video.What do i do?am i screwed?

Return the camcorder and purchase one that is Mac compatible. Simple as that!

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info, then select Firewire from the left hand column of the System Profiler. First open up Imovie. Then plug the camcorder into the USB port. The computer will search for the camera. It will give a snapshot of what is on there. You can just click on CHECK ALL. It will begin to import. It will also tell you how long it will take. Once it is imported, click DONE. THEN, this is important, drag the snapshots into IMovie on the top to create a new project. You can also click on New Project and name it. When all the pics are in the movie, it will be saved. You can then edit it any way you want. I've done this many times on a Mac. My problem is the internal memory. I have to find out how to get the internal memory videos into my computer. Am currently researching it. BTW, importing from the memory stick is what I did above. I had the same problem. Here is a very easy solution that worked for me.
1- Open the .mpg video with QuickTime Player
2-Go to file/export/ and pick the "Ipad,Iphone,Ipod Touch & AppleTV" option
3-Save your movie with the option "ipod touch &iphone 3GS" picked
4-Confirm by choosing folder of choice to save it in
Now this new version of the movie should be able to be read in imovies.

Sony Camcorder with Firewire & USB to L505-S6946 Laptop eSATA or USB

I would like to use my Sony camcorder's Firewire or USB port to download to my L505-S6946 Toshiba Satellite (Windows 7) laptop but the laptop does not have a firewire port and it is not seeing the camcorder when I try the USB port. The laptop only has USB and eSATA ports. There is no slot for PC or Express cards for a Firewire adapter either.
Is there any way to make the USB or eSATA connection work?
Sony support for Windows 7 says that the drivers for the camcorder are already on the laptop and that USB streaming is not supported. That leaves me with trying to find a way to connect to the eSATA port on the laptop. Any help on getting the camcorder to download to the laptop would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Join the club. I've been searching for a while without much luck. Right now there appears to only be one company which makes a Firewire to USB cable. Good luck finding a place that sells it though.

There are apparently USB/Firewire hubs like this one from IOGear but I have yet to find one that allows for only a USB connection on the computer side, so far they all appear to require a firewire port on the computer in additon to the USB port. Hopefully there is a device out there at relatively low cost that will allow for firewire to usb for those laptops (of which there are more and more) that don't have a firewire port or a cardbus/pcmcia slot.
What I've been doing in the mean time is to use a desktop compter with a firewire card to capture the video, then transfer (via network or external hard drive) to the L505 to do further editing from there. I didn't think that not having a firewire port would be an issue when I bought the laptop but it became one.

Using a sony camcorder for skype on LG smart TV

I am trying to get skype set up on my LG smart TV. I've downloaded the app, but it will not open. It keeps bringing up a page that tells me to buy a skype camera for the TV. I've just recently purchased a very nice, top of the line Sony camcorder. In previous posts that I've read the reason for the special camera is that the microphone is better. However, I cannot believe that the sony camcorder I have will not work on the tv.
Has anyone had any luck with using a camcorder with their smart TV? Also, how do I sign into my skype account on the TV without connecting a camera?

It could also be that the other party is not sending 16:9 video any longer. Did they maybe change their camera, computer hardware or internet connection speed and are not able to send 16:9 therefor any longer?

I have a macbook pro. Bought a Sony camcorder HDR-CX110 (says its imovie compatible and the store clerk told us it was Mac compatible) so here we are I cannot get anything from the camera or its disc to the computer. HELP?

Can Premier handle the SONY camcorder MTS format files?

I have a 1 year old Sony camcorder (model HDR-CX260V) and was trying to determine if Adobe Premier Elements can import the videos that that camcorder takes (seems to be MTS file format), import those videoes, edit them, and then output to a more universally recognized file type (that can be played on a TV/DVD and/or PC?
I have done a # of web searches and don't seem to find a definitive answer on this. Thanks in advance for any help.

For now assuming a NTSC workflow.
I have looked at the video specifications for the Sony HDR-CX260V and on paper it looks you should be able to import/edit/export it output, namely,
a. 1080p60 (1920 x 1080 16:9 @ 60 progressive frames per second)
b. 1080i30 (1920 x 1080 16:9 @ 30 interlaced frames per second)
c. 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 @ 30 interlaced frames per second.
You say that you have a .mts file extension.
Premiere Elements 11 has project presets for each of the above.
For TV/DVD viewing via the DVD player, you are going to need DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc. In this case, NTSC DVD-VIDEO Widescreen format on DVD disc.
Keep in mind:
a. you will be going from 1920 x 1080 to the standard of the DVD-VIDEO format (720 x 480 frame size whether standard or widescreen)
b. your interlaced source media will gave a Field Order (Scan Order) = Upper Field First; whereas, DVD-VIDEO has Lower Field First....that may need switching by selecting one of the Hard Disk Flash Memory Camcorder choices or using a regular project preset and using Field Options Reverse Field Dominance on the file on the Timeline.
All this can be done in many versions of Premere Elements (with or without new Premiere Elements project preset 1080p60). More details on that later.
But, if you do not now have any version of Premiere Elements, then please, before any purchase, download and install and try the free 30 day tryout of Premiere Elements 11 from Adobe. You need to verify that Premiere Elements 11 is compatible with your computer environment as well as your video importing/editing/exporting.

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see Sony camcorder in iMovie anymore. It still works on MacBook, so nothing wrong with camera or connections.

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see my Sony camcorder anymore. I tried the new iMovie as well as the old version 9.0.9, which is still in Applications. I checked the camcorder and connections in iMovie on my MacBook (not upgraded) and that still functions properly, so the problem does not seem to be in iMovie, old or new, or in camcorder and connection.
Anybody with the same problem or a solution?

Video Out to Sony Camcorder does work

I used a Apple cable (Monitor out to Serial or RCA) to video recorder what is on my mac's screen (using the camcorder as a second monitor. The G5 does not see the sony camcorder.. however, when you use the video out from a powerbook under display preferences the dialog box comes up detect displays and you can choose to miror the display and you can see the same mac screen on my camcorders display. On the G5 that option does not come up. I went to the Apple store and the Genius's did not know why the G5 could not recognize the sony camcorder as a second monitor? Anyone have a clue? I want to record what is on my G5 screen... any suggestions.

Not sure which graphic card the Macbook Pro has.. but it worked just fine when I connect the appropriate adapter.. you could see the mac screen on my camcorder screen. I am trying to video tape Itunes visualizer for a party so I can cut and paste into imovie.

Trying to find a work-around but the one explained isn't clear - please could you email an 'idiots guide' step-by-step how to import DV into v.13
