Sony camcorder not recognized on Imac?

I have an older Sony Camcorder Digital 8 mm.  I plugged into my new Imac via USB cable and there is no recognition that a device is connected.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It needs to be connected via firewire (all tape-based cameras do).
Does the model appear here?
iMovie 11 - cameras supported:
http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
Also, try this:
Open the Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder) and set the default audio output to 44100hZ. Then make sure that the audio output of the camera is set to 16 bits and not 12 bits. Try the camera again.
If no luck try these:

  • Sony Camcorder not recognized on Macbook

I have a sony handycam dcr hc36 model. I am trying to connect it to my Macbook using a USB cable (that's what I have with the cam). The camcorder recognized that it was connected to the system and prompted me to select the option 'Stream Video'. However, I do not see the device recognized by the finder. Do you think I should install some drivers? I have a CD provided with the cam but I am not able to auto-run and install the drivers. Please help me.

OK, a little bit more Googling, and I found:

It looks like you need a software called ImageMixer VCD2, which hopefully works in Rosetta. Check with its author, or a newer version that is Universal.
Quicktime Pro may also work, as it indicates you need the Quicktime application, which itself offers importing features if you purchase the $30 Pro software.

  • My camcorder not recognized

I have a Sony DCR-HC30 miniDV camcorder.  it works well with non-intel PowerPC G5.  Now it is not recognized on my new MacBook Pro.  It is not on the campatibility list.  Is there a patch, update, etc. that could make this work on this computer.
    Thank you.

It should work fine, but you will need a Firewire cable.
Depending on your laptop, you either have Thunderbolt or Firewire 800 or both.
If you have Firewire 800, you need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable.

If you have Thunderbolt only, you need the 9 pin to 4 pin fireware cable AND the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to get the WD hard drive back up and running using the Disk Utilities application. I tried to fix it using the diagnose / repair option but that failed so I had to reformat and partition it. Now it works great but I lost all the data that was on it. I still don't know what caused the problem and hope it doesn't happen again.

Hi, Jake. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's possible that your AirPort card has fizzled out on you. AirPort card failure doesn't happen very often, but it happened to me once, and it was very frustrating.
We diagnosed what was wrong with mine by my husband swapping his AirPort card with mine. Then my iBook would connect, but his wouldn't, so we knew it was the card.
Will the iBook work on any wireless network? Do you have someone with whom you could swap cards to see if that's the problem?
Possible sources for replacing the original AirPort card (links last checked 8/19/07):

Have you tried using the other USB port? If neither port works, try plugging in a USB mouse to see if it works to confirm that your USB ports aren't damaged.
Have you installed any new software? Maybe a Security Update or something similar? Sometimes that will break functionality of third-party drivers.
You may need to go to the website of the manufacturer of the USB wireless device to see if an updated driver is available.

There is a driver that was released on June 19, 2007.

Even if this is the one you have installed, you may want to reinstall it.

Since Jake hasn't posted in over two months, either that driver worked for him, he found the answer elsewhere, or he gave up. Since he hasn't posted back, we have no way of knowing.

Since you're running Leopard, I surmise that your iMac takes the AirPort Extreme card?
May I ask why you don't just get one of those? As I post this, the Apple Store has a refurbished one for $29.00.

I am not running Leopard... using 10.4 and I already own the product. It is suppose to work and there is no reason to purchase another unit. All I need to understand is how to make the IMac recognize the USB device or how to configure the unit. Others have stated in this and other forums that they have used this unit with success.
Thanks for address this specific issue.

Your specifications at the bottom of your post state that you're running Mac OS X 10.5.1?
You may want to post in the Internet and Networking your iMac (Flat Panel) Forum. Maybe someone there can help you out. (You've posted in the iBook G3 Forum.)

I am using a laptop to connect to the internet not the machine that I am writing about. If I could do that I would not need any help. I will check out the other forum but this thread is on topic.
    Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The information in your thread references an iBook quite a lot but the title of this post says iMac so I going to assume that you are trying to use this device with an iMac.
It is also unclear what version of the Mac OS you are using.
Let's start by stating the fact that these USB networking networking devices are not inherently supported by the Mac OS. Therefore they need drivers. These drivers are usually fragile and only work with a well defined version (or versions) of the Mac OS. Anytime that you make any upgrade to the Mac you are able to create an incompatibility with the driver and the device.
The Belkin F5D9050 does have some Mac OS drivers available at this link.
You should uninstall/remove the current driver for this device.
    Restart your iMac.
Download and install the appropriate driver for the version of Mac OS on your iMac.
    Restart your iMac.
If that doesn't work, either get the original AirPort card for the internal wireless slot in the iMac or get an Ethernet wireless adapter. An Ethernet wireless adapter requires no drivers and therefore will work with any Ethernet device.

  • Airport Card Not Recognized on iMac DV 400 SE Slot Loading

I just installed an airport card with adapter per Apple's instructions. It is not recognized in the Network list in System preferences. Internal Modem is listed as well as Built-in-Ethernet (with an active Internet connection). Has 10.3.9 and the latest Airport software updates.
It was taken from a working iMac and installed in my iMac. Any idea what the problem might be?

Will do. Thanks for the advice.
This computer is somewhat of a cultural icon. One of the first computers configured out of the box for video editing. On a Contour stand, 130 Gb HD, 1 GM ram. Still very functional after 8 1/2 years. Looks great in the studio. Just wanted to wean it from it's ethernet connection.

  • Ipad not recognized on imac

When I had to reset my IPAD( couldnt remember my password), my iMAC does not recognize my Ipad and unable to sync any music, apps etc.
I have tried everything, what is the next step?

Correct on Ipad assumption; not recognized on my Imac or Mac Pro.
Also, my Mac Pro has Itunes11 installed correctly, still didnt matter.
I have to figure out how to uninstall Itunes on my Imac, somehow its corrupted.
When I move Itunes to Trash, I get the message that ITunes cannot be modified or deleted bc its required by Mac OS......
    So, its two problems.

  • Sony RX1R not recognized by lightroom 5.3. What should I do?

My Sony RX1R is not recognized by lightroom 5.3. In the import window it appears a "no name", and the images on the cam are not recognized. What should I do?

The Sony RX1R was supported beginning with LR 5.0 so LR 5.3 should be ok: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Try taking the card out of your camera and put it in a card reader and then see what happens.  If you are already doing this, then try copying the images from the card to your hard-drive using an OS-level function like Windows Explorer or Finder and then import from the HD.
It is possible that there is a Sony driver interfering with the transfer of images directly from the camera to the computer via LR.  It is also possible that the images are not being correctly stored on the memory card in the first place so are corrupted before LR touches them—this could be something wrong with the camera or the card.

Yes. Refer to the *Mac system requirements* of Apple - iPod nano - Technical Specifications (or on the back of the box the Nano came in) for the minimum OS & iTunes versions you will need.

  • External USB Hard Drive not recognized on iMac HELP!!

I am currently using a i5 iMac running Lion 10.7.5
I have recently partitioned a Verbatim USB external hard drive and uploaded all my footage from a wedding. This was done with no problems and the QT videos could be opened from the hard drive.
    A few weeks later, the hard drive does not show up in my finder. BUT it is recognized in disk utility. Here is a screen shot;
    So first I ran "Verify" and it told me to repair disk. After clicking on Repair, I got this;
It is giving me the error message "Invalid B-Tree node"
    Here is more info on the hard drive;

Can someone give me a step by step on how to get the hard drive working again? It would mean the world to me as this footage is priceless and irreplaceable.
OR can you refer me to someone (Geek Squad? Apple Store?) that might be able to help me out?
    Thanks in advance!

The error message invalid b-tree node size indicates that the directory on the disk is corrupt. The way that it can be repaired is to reformat as disk utiltiy says.
It is recommended that the data be backed up first before either of this solution are done.
Since it is not be recognized by the sytem at all it does sound like you can back it up now.
    Do you have a backup?
If you don't there is every chance you may lose all your data.
You can check to see if a data recovery service can recover any data for you. If you go that route you are looking at spending $$$$

  • External hard drives not recognized by imac

I am a new Mac user and have been having lots of trouble getting my external hard drives to mount. I have a simpletech and a seagate external hard drive both NFTS formatted neither of which is recognized by my iMac. They don't show up on disk utility or system profiier under USB ports. They both work on my PC laptop and a friends iMac (OS 10.6.4) just fine. I have a card reader and flash drive that work perfectly on my iMac. Apple support orginally thought it might be the logic board so they replaced it. The new one is having the exact same problem. Does anyone have any idea what could possibly be the problem?? This is driving me insane.

I'm having exactly the same problem with a new iMac purchased one week ago. I have two Maxtor drives and one WD, all firewire 400 drives, all of which mount briefly and then unmount and will not mount again. I am not new to Macs. The drives work fine on the older PowerPC Mac running 10.4.11. These drives contain my backups and aren't recognized by the new iMac. I cannot believe that 3 external drives are all going into failure mode at the same time since they were all purchased at different times and only used as backup drives, so they weren't on all of the time. Is there an incompatibility between 800 and 400?? I'm using a LaCie 800 to 400 firewire cable. Suggestions??

  • External HDs not recognized by iMac when using USB cable

I just bought a new iMac & plugged in my two Western Digital 1tb drives using the supplied USB cables and neither of them are recognized by my iMac.
I've been using both of these drives with my other G5 iMac using the firewire cables & have not had any issues. I also purchased an adapter (USB -->firewire 800) and each hard drive mounts ... but neither will mount using the USB connections.
Any suggestions as to how I can get the second drive to work using the USB cable ...
    Thanks,
    Brent

+do I need to move the contents of the external drive off the unit before the partition?????+
YES! Absolutely! The partitioning process erases the drive, so you need to temporarily copy data onto your old Mac.
+how do I achieve this? I'm guessing there's a piece of hardware that I'll need to connect the two hard drives together and then feed another line into the iMac ... correct?+
All you need are firewire cables (hard drive to hard drive to iMac). See Dennis' link and the excerpt here:
+Question 7: Can FireWire devices be connected in a daisy chain?+
+Answer: Yes, and if the devices are designed according to the FireWire standard, they can be turned on and off as needed. For example, all devices don't need to be powered on to use the last device in the chain. For the best result, and to avoid overstressing the FireWire port, connect one FireWire device to the Macintosh, then add one device at a time to the chain. Avoid plugging in live power adapters into devices connected to the chain.+
And congratulations on your new iMac - you'll love it; I got mine about a month ago.

  • Re: Satellite A205-S5825 - DV Camcorder not recognized by firewire

I have a Satellite A205-S5825 and I cannot get it to recognize my Canon DV camcorder connected by a firewire cable.
The same camera works perfectly with my desktop PC. My wife also has a Satellite, an A215 and this does not recognize the camcorder either. All 3 computers are running XP service pack 3.
Can anyone throw any light on this? I would really like to use my laptop for video editing as my desktop is at another location.
    Thanks in advance

It is really strange. I would like to know if this will happen with factory settings.
I have camcorder too and I have tested it now with Vista preinstalled P200 and WXP preinstalled Satellite Pro P300.
On both notebooks the cam is recognized properly and I was able to record short movie.
I really don't understand what is wrong there but try to remove firewire port from device manager and restart your notebook.
The firewire port will be recognized and installed automatically. After doing this connect your cam and test it again.

2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory:  2 GB
The iMac does not recognize video camcorder.
Port is 800 and I use an adapter to bring it down to 400.
Camera is a Canon ZR 900.
Connected using FireWire from camera to adapter and into the FireWire 800 port.
Am trying to use this set up in a school using Boinx TV software.
Tried to load video into iMovie but would not recognize the camera (only Built in iSight would show)
    Any suggestions?

    (1) I don't use a ZR 900, but my best suggestion is to try at least one different connection method to see if the adapter you have might be the problem.   Here are some examples you can consider:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
    • Some users report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
       http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
    • To use your iSight's FW400 6pin-6pin cable, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:

    (2) If you have other Firewire devices, you can connect one to verify that your Mac's port is working.  If not, try testing and resetting your Mac's Firewire using the instructions in this archived Apple knowledge base article:

    (3) If you are still having trouble, you can test your camcorder and connection on a different Mac to see if it works with any you can find.  If no, the camcorder may need service.
