Sony Camcorder with MacBook

I just bought a Sony DCR-DVD108 camcorder. I connect it via USB and it comes up as a blank DVD. I can't get any videos off from it. I have tried sticking the mini DVD in the slot drive (bad idea, but I got it out.). Just trying to find advice on how I can get my videos into my MacBook for editing with iMovie. thanks!!

iMovie (and Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro) are applications that work with DV camcorders. Your Sony is not a DV camcorder. A standard DV camcorder would have a FireWire connection (that's part of the DV standard). Saving files to a mini DVD is not part of the DV standard. A quick search of the iMovie forums (since you didn't mention exactly which version of iMovie you were going to be using) seems to indicate that it's not directly compatible.

  • Sony Camcorder with Firewire & USB to L505-S6946 Laptop eSATA or USB

I would like to use my Sony camcorder's Firewire or USB port to download to my L505-S6946 Toshiba Satellite (Windows 7) laptop but the laptop does not have a firewire port and it is not seeing the camcorder when I try the USB port. The laptop only has USB and eSATA ports.  There is no slot for PC or Express cards for a Firewire adapter either.
Is there any way to make the USB or eSATA connection work?
Sony support for Windows 7 says that the drivers for the camcorder are already on the laptop and that USB streaming is not supported.  That leaves me with trying to find a way to connect to the eSATA port on the laptop.  Any help on getting the camcorder to download to the laptop would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Join the club. I've been searching for a while without much luck. Right now there appears to only be one company which makes a Firewire to USB cable. Good luck finding a place that sells it though.

There are apparently USB/Firewire hubs like this one from IOGear but I have yet to find one that allows for only a USB connection on the computer side, so far they all appear to require a firewire port on the computer in additon to the USB port. Hopefully there is a device out there at relatively low cost that will allow for firewire to usb for those laptops (of which there are more and more) that don't have a firewire port or a cardbus/pcmcia slot.
What I've been doing in the mean time is to use a desktop compter with a firewire card to capture the video, then transfer (via network or external hard drive) to the L505 to do further editing from there. I didn't think that not having a firewire port would be an issue when I bought the laptop but it became one.

  • Connecting Sony Camcorder to MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and I have a Sony Handycam DCR HC38. How do I connect the 2 when there is no Firewire cable on the new computer? Someone please help, it's making me crazy!

    Hi
As Meg the Dog writes - just to clarify.
    • You need a new Cable - the one delivered with Your Camera is an USB-cable
and it doesn't work with iMovie.
    • You need a 4-pin -> FW-800 cable (see what port Your Mac has so that it matches)

  • Connecting sony camcorder to macbook

how do i connect my sony handycam HDR-HC5 to my macbook? i purchased a firewire cable, and thought i plugged it in correctly, but nothing is happening. thanks

When you start up iMovie, and the first dialog box appears that gives you the option to create a new movie, to name it and where. Underneath is the disclosing arrow named Video format. Click on this and choose HDV 1080i, then see if this imports it.
If not and because your not sure what format you recorded in try the other three or four options.
BTW, in the iMovie forum, some have been having problems with this camera and your not alone.

  • Sony DV Camcorder with only AV outputs

I have a Sony camcorder with only AV outputs and I want to transfer video from the camcorder to my macbook pro. Does anyone have any knowledge of mac compatible cables out that will help me? Or any other way to get the video on my computer

Yes... you don't have a DV camcorder, you have a DVD camcorder. Two completely different things. A DVD camcorder records a highly compressed format, probably MPEG 2, which is meant for playback as opposed to DV which is meant for editing. You will need some sort of software to convert from DVD to DV stream and there will be a quality loss. See this for more info:

  • Macbook Air and Sony camcorder hard drive problems

My new Mac Book Air will not respond in I Movie to my new Sony camcorder with internal hard drive but will sometimes with the SD card.....can anyone give me a clue please.

I opted for the 11-inch mainly due to portability, but went with the 128GB model. Once I have all my critical apps installed (including Adobe Lightroom and CS4), I still have about 85GB free.
One of the reasons I got the MBA is for traveling and downloading photos from my camera while on the road. If the 128 isn't enough, I have a WD Passport drive that I can use for backup & freeing up space should the need arise. So far, I haven't had to connect the external drive, so I'm happy I opted for the 11-inch. The size is perfect for portability without compromising keyboard size or resolution.

If you are using a Sony MPEG-2/AC3 camcorder, then make sure QT v7.6.3 is installed in your "Applications/Utilities" folder. If it isn't, then install it from your Snow Leopard installation "Extras" installer package and then re-install your QT MPEG-2 Playback Component as per the MPEG Streamclip installation/Snow Leopard instructions.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see Sony camcorder in iMovie anymore. It still works on MacBook, so nothing wrong with camera or connections.

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see my Sony camcorder anymore. I tried the new iMovie as well as the old version 9.0.9, which is still in Applications. I checked the camcorder and connections in iMovie on my MacBook (not upgraded) and that still functions properly, so the problem does not seem to be in iMovie, old or new, or in camcorder and connection.
Anybody with the same problem or a solution?
    Thanks mbkom

  • I have 10.5.8 macbook with a firewire and want to connect to my Sony Camcorder 2005 iLINK.  What adapters do I need?

I have 10.5.8 macbook with firewire and want to connect to my sony camcorder 2005 iLink.  I believe they are both 4 pin and need male connecters.  Can anyone help me?

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info, then select Firewire from the left hand column of the System Profiler.  If it says "Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec" then this is the cable you need http://www.amazon.com/Cmple-IEEE-1394-FireWire-iLink-Cable/dp/B00403TH0C/ref=sr_ 1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1311376173&sr=1-8
If it says "Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" then post that back here.

  • Using a Sony Handycam with a MacBook

We have a Sony Handycam and I am unable to make it work with my MacBook. Are they compatible and how can I import the movies off the camcorder and work with them on my mac?

im pretty sure you have to get a firewire cable to connect the sony to your macbook. unless of course you have a memory card reader. then you could just dump the memory card from inside the sony cam into the card reader and import.

    You are running 10.5.8
Did you try booting off your Install disk holding the c key down.  From here you can get to the drop down menu just a few clicks in (you are not going to install) and run  the Disk Utility>Repair Disk.  See if it will let you do this.

  • How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?

How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?
    I have PremierePro-CS5 installed.
This stereo 3D camcorder (Sony HDR-TD10E), output an .MVC (MultiViewCoding) file, coded in H.264 format.
This format is already compatible with Bluray3D stereoscopic format.
    1) But, how to edit the .MVC in Premiere?
    2) What plugin should I use (if exists) for PremiereProCS5?
    3) Cineform Neo3D, can manage the .MVC format? Can convert it to Cineform format file, for import it into Premiere?
    4) What software should I use to convert an .MVC video to an AVCHD H.264 file, and import it into PremierePro CS5 or CS5.5 for editing?
    Thanks!

Sorry, I am Italian, it is very difficult for me to understand what he says!
I can just read the english text, or follow the actions of a videotutorial!
Thus my question is the same:
    -What software can do that?
-Sony Vegas 10 do the Bluray3D authoring?
-For MVC editing, should I wait for Adobe CS6? Or is it planned an update for CS5.5?

  • Sony DCR-TRV140 with Macbook Pro and Final Cut Express 4

OK all, I'm a Mac novice here. Just bought my first Mac last month and added Final Cut Express to it in order to have some nice advanced features when it comes time to edit all kinds of home video shot on the Sony DCR-TRV140 Digital8 Handycam...
But I'm having trouble figuring out how to get my MacBook Pro to recognize the camcorder.
I have a 4-pin firewire connector on the camcorder, and a 9 pin firewire connector on the Mac. Is it as easy as buying a 4/9 pin cable?
I thought about trying to hook it up through the USB cable... but haven't had any luck there either.
As you can tell, I'm quite new to this, so please be nice. Ha!
If I can provide any further information, please let me know.
Specifications for the Sony camcorder can be found here:

Is it as easy as buying a 4/9 pin cable?
    Pretty much.
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Here's one source of such a cable:

I'm not sure what Easy Setup you'll need to use in FCE, but, if you're in the USA, I think it will be DV-NTSC DV Converter or maybe DV-NTSC Firewire Basic.

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD AND VIEW THE MOVIES I HAVE MADE WITH MY SONY CAMCORDER HDR-XR550VE?

Thanks for being so helpful. I chased up the web-link but was not sure it would work with .cpi, so didn't opt to buy it.
Then I went on to the Sony support page and found this - which works fine, and has very clear instructions.

  • Recommend Sony camcorder compatible with FC.

Upgrading from Mini DV, someone recommended I consider the Sony CX series but I do not know what to consider upgrading from using Mini DV Tape Based Camcorders and Final Cut Express over the past 6 years
Considering - possible iMac upgrade, software upgrade (someone said my 06 Mac doesn't have enough memory for HD upgrade), compatible camcorder with FC and iMovie, any video software to convert footage to edit. Any advice appreciated

This will help with FCPX compatible cameras....
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/cameras/en/index.html?
More important than RAM is the video card.....
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/specs/
If you get a compatible camera, you won't need software to convert footage... FC will do it for you.
