Sony CRX215E5 CD-RW drive doesn't read disks.

I recently purchased a used G4/450 with a Sony model CRX215E5 CD-RW drive installed. I was told this drive was one of Apple's OEM drives for the G4, although I can find no proof of this. The issue with the drive is that it doesn't read any disks. It seems to operate normally (spins up and searches when a disk is inserted), but it never acquires the disk, it just continues to spin with the operation light flashing steadily. I have not been able to get any manufacturing info from Sony about this drive, as they state this was a manufactured OEM drive, and any support must come from the original manufacturer of the system. Heck, they wouldn't even tell me if it was made for Apple, so I have no way of actually knowing if these were OEM Apple CD-RW drives. To that end, it does show up under the "System Profiler" as a supported CD-RW drive.
My questions are these:
1) Can anyone tell how I might find out if this is an Apple OEM Drive, and if so where I might find any support on the Apple website?
2) Would anyone know if there are any firmware updates that I might need to install? (Since I can't info about this drive in an Apple G4, I've been unable to locate any info about any firmware updates.
I know I can purchase a new drive, but want to see if this one can be made to work again.
My system: G4/450, 512 MB sdram, 2-40GB Seagate Barracuda - 7200rpm HDs, and it's running OS 10.4.11 with all updates. Burning software is Roxio Toast Titanium 6.
Any help, or info would be greatly appreciated.

OK! Problem solved. This is going to floor you, but here what happened.
I figured if the drive was shot, then what do I have to lose by opening it up. So I did just that. Removed the metal casings from top and bottom. I found what appeared to be parts of an "exploded" CD inside (LOL). Seriously, there were a couple of chunks about 3/4" across jammed up under the bottom circuit board. I removed them, then went on to double check all of the "push-in" type wiring connectors, and inspected the other wires, too. The main wiring harness to the platter rotating drive motor (the motor which drives the spindle/CD for any inserted disc) was partially pulled loose from it's connector. I popped the retaining clips, reinserted the ribbon cable, and locked the clip back down to secure it. Reassembled everything, plugged it in and fired it up. It ran like a champ. Go figure. I even burned a music CD just to see if it would, and it burned it no problem.
Problem solved!
Thanks guys,
Rudy

  • Optical Drive doesn't read DVD's

Hi, I own an HP Pavillion dv7 1279wm entertainment laptop. It came installed with Vista, but I installed a free upgrade to Windows 7 that I got from HP. I had a problem where the drive would not read anything; the disc would spin, but eventually the tray would automatically open and tell me to insert a disc. After using Microsoft FixIt, I was able to read CDs, but encountered the same problem when trying to load a DVD. Previous to using Microsoft FixIt, I did use device manager to uninstall the drive and then reboot so Windows 7 would automatically update the driver. I'm thinking that means that it's not a software problem, but if you can think of anything else I can do (short of swapping out drives because I don't have access to another drive) to rule out it being a software problem please let me know. I realize that combo drives typically use different lasers to read CDs and DVDs, so my guess is that the laser that reads DVDs has failed. If that is the case, where can I find the correct replacement part and how do I install it?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
If you eject the optical drive tray, you should see just one laser situated towards the centre of the tray - different voltages are applied to this depending on whether it's reading a CD or DVD.
First of all, use a soft, non abrasive material such as cotton or a cotton bud and gently clean the lens.
Check if this has made any difference.
If it still doesn't read DVDs, try following the procedure under the sub-heading 'Let me fix it myself' on the link below to remove the Upper and Lower filters, restart the notebook and see if this helps the issue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
If it still doesn't read DVDs, the following procedure will test if your notebook can start from a bootable disc in the optical drive - the advantage of trying this is that it will rule out any possible Windows driver error as the CD/DVD drive is under the control of the Bios when starting the notebook.  So if you find that the notebook will not boot from the DVD, then it's almost certainly a Hardware fault in the optical drive itself and it will need to be replaced.
Using another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue DVD.  Download the relevant ISO from the link below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You need use an application such as ImgBurn to correctly burn the ISO to a DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, insert the DVD and then restart the notebook and see if it boots from this disc - if it does, let the first screen come up ( this will show repair options etc ) then just remove the DVD and restart the notebook.  If the notebook will not boot from the DVD, it may just load straight into Windows.

  • Disc drive doesn't read discs but says it's working properly

I have a Pavilion dv6000 with vista.  I can put in any cd and the disc drive will start spinning but will not read the disc.  For example, i put the game "Empire Earth" into the drive and i can here the disc spinning but it will not start.  The drive doesn't even show up in My Computer.  I recently reset my computer back to factory settings but the problem was occuring before that as well.  I tried checking for upper/lowerfilters but they aren't there.  Is there something else i can try?  I don't have a disc to boot from so that test is out of the question.  If anyone has a solution please let me know a.s.a.p.  I use this computer for college and i need it to read discs for a class.  Thank You!

    Hi,
You could try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the links below.  As you don't mention your OS I've included links for Vista and Windows 7.
    Vista
    Windows 7
If the above doesn't help, check in your bios that it appears as a bootable device.  If it does, disable it, boot into Windows, reboot and enter the bios again, re-enable the device and boot Windows.
    Hope this helps.
    Best wishes,
    DP-K

  • DVD drive won't read disks at boot

    I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

  • Equium L300 CD/DVD Drive no longer reads disks

There is already a thread with a similar problem to this with a different model, but it seems to have died.
The CD/DVD drive on my Equium L300-148 now refuses to read disks. It seems to burn them still, which is strange.
That must mean the laser has not burnt out, and the drivers seem to be working correctly.
I can see the drive in Explorer and I can eject it with the context menu.
I have tried a "Disable" then "Enable" in the Device Manager, but I have not tried uninstalling the drive then restarting.
    Any help would be apreciated.

    Hello
To make things clear: there are no much options you can try. You can try to remove optical disc drive from device manager and restart the notebook. The drive will be recognized automatically and the drive will be ready for use.
Can you tell us more about this issue?
Which formats you have tried to open? DVD movies, music CDs, different data files?
    Is there some error message?
If you don't have external HDD you can save all important data onto empty DVD medias.
Of course the best way to check functionality is to set factory settings again, but if you don't want to do this it makes things more complicated.
What you can do is to contact nearest service provider. They can install recovery image on separate HDD and test the functionality. If there is some serious problem the drive will be replaced for free (if the warranty is still valid).

  • Disk drive won't read disks

    Hi there,
I've had my Mac Mini for several months, and starting fairly recently, it only reads about 1 out of 5 disks I put in on the first try. It accepts the disk and sounds as if the laser is about to move to read it, but then the lazer gets stuck. I can hear the motor working to try and move the lazer, but again, it seems to be jammed. After about 30 seconds of it trying to read the disk, it gives up and ejects the CD.
As a note, I've been able to read music CD's, burned CD's, and installation CD's for software before, but more and more frequently it doesn't read the disc.
Thanks for any and all help.

Hmm...not sure if this was the proper forum. Sorry if it isn't.

  • Satego X200-21D: TS-L632D DVD-Drive doesn't read and burn DVD-R DL

    Hallo,
I have problems with my SATEGO X200-21D DVD-Drive
TS-L632D to read an burn DVD-R DL discs.
I contacted the Toshiba-support via e-mail ans asked
for a new drive-firmware, but the answer did not solve my problem.
There are only updates in the toshiba download area,
but not for my drive model. I can send my notebook
for money to a service partner, to check this problem.
I can not understand this! I bought a highend notebook
for 1.700 EUR and it is no firmware update support
available to solve problems with newer discs?
If i search for this problem in the WEB, there an a lot of
questions and problems with reading and burning
DVD-R DL discs with this drive modell!
    How can it be???
I hope for some hints to get a firmware drive update
to fix the problems reading and writing DVD-R DL discs.

    Hi,
yes I have got the TS-L632D drive and not the TS-L632H - that is true. But why is no firmware update available for TS-L632D,
because also this drive has problems with DVD-DL discs!? I payed 1700,- EUR for my Thoshiba notebook with the
DVD-drive TS-L632D. And in my opinion it can't be, that for this drive version is no firmware update available!!!
Other companys (f. i. DELL , SAMSUNG) support this drive version and offer firmware updates for this drive modell.
It is a fact that my DVD-drive has problems to read and burn DVD-DL discs! This is a known fact for many drives and therfore
exists firmware updates for the DVD-drives to fix this problem. But why not for my drive modell???
My be it was an error to by a Toshiba Notebook!? I am a customer and I don't care what special
DVD-drive modell is in my notebook (TS-L632D , H or wwhat ever)!!!
My message to Thoshiba: "Pleas help me to solve my problem!!!"

  • Optical drive no longer reads disks, Optical drive no longer reads disks

Hi folks, never really had a terrible problem with this computuer until the last few months with the battery wearing out and having to replace the charging cord twice but now it seems like I have a problem here.
Earlier today, less than an hour ago, i burned a CD for my buddy, when i went to burn the second disk, it didnt want to accept it.  Finally, when it did, it wouldnt read I had a disk in it.  When i got home, i tried other cds/dvds and it wouldnt read them either.  It was making a rather bad sound, kind of like an alarm sound.  The CD will not spin and is ejeceted shortly after.
I was planning on bootcamping my Macbook Pro later this weekend, but if i can not get this to work, I wont be able to.  I dont think i have Apple Care and the nearest apple store is about a 2 hour drive from my house.

  • Optical drive doesn't recognize disks since update to 10.4.8

I've got an iBook G4 that I purchased from MCE Technologies with a slot loading superdrive. Since upgrading to 10.4.8, it won't recognize any disks, whether blank or software disks or DVD movies.
Anyone else having a similar problem?

    Doesn't apply any more.

  • Dvd drive suddenly stopped reading disks is there a usb dvd rom that can be used temporarily

my dvd stopped working I then bought the targus external usb dvd player and then it didnt work either does anyone know if there is a temporary fix

The drive very probably needs to be replaced. You have tried everything else possible, but one thing. Try to boot from the drive using your system recovery disks. If the drive can boot the hardware is not bad and it is a Windows problem. It is not a registry error or the drive would not show up in My Computer. If it is a Windows problem it is an odd one.

  • Satellite P200-1FC - CD/DVD doesn't read disks

I have a Satellite P200-1FC and the "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device won't read CDs or DVDs and don't respond. The device manager shows this device is working properly.
    Can you please help?

    Hi!
Try to remove the CD/DVD drive from device manger and restart the notebook. Does it work?
If not you should try to remove the upper and lower filters:
    1) Run Regedit (Start -> Run -> Regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot.
    Bye

  • Hard drive won't read Disk, Firewire or Disk Utility

Everything with my computer seems to work fine on start up. However when I insert a disk, attach a firewire drive or try to download an update it fails. When I go to disk utility or try Onxy to repair permissions the programs runs forever and never sees the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Hi! This sounds like logic board or hard drive problems. Try running the hardware test disc that came with your computer or that may be on the install disc. Tom

  • CR52-A2 doesn't read any disks.

The other day i was erasing a disk with Nero when it stopped responding and i had to shut down the computer whilst the drive was still 'writing' (although it had been doing it for the past half an hour, so i doubt it was making much progress.)
When i restarted and tried to erase the CD again, it just said "Please insert a disk into drive d:", when there was already a disk in it. I've tried it with a load of other disks too and it doesn't recognise any of them. The green LED just stays on and there is a quiet but constant clicking coming from inside the drive (like what it does when you first insert a disk, but constantly). What's happened?!
    ..please
