Sony DCR-HC96 import problems

I'm having problem trying to import my movies to iMovie 08 from my Sony DCR-HC96.
I connect the camcorder to its dock, connect the power cable and the Firewire cable (i-link), switch on and fired up iMovie 08. I press the import button but it just tells me that no camera is connected.
I have replaced the Firewire cable but it still does not help.
Can anyone suggest any further action?
Interestingly it has become harder and harder to import my movies from the camcorder and at one point I had to hold the cable in a certain way to get an import option - which leads me to beleive that the dock is at fault...but at £70 for a replacement from Honk Kong I think I'd be better off buying a new camcorder!
Any suggestions what maybe wrong/new camcorder that will work with a Mac!

Sony DCR-HC37E Import Problems

I'm trying to import an hours' worth of footage from my Sony DCR-HC27E into iMovie 6.0.3. However, when I try to import iMovie will only capture 2:02 minute clips meaning I can't leave it to import.
The only reason I can think of why this is happening is that I'm importing all files to an 80GB USB1.1 external which can't be written to at the same speed as the video which is coming in from Firewire.
I'm having exactly the same issue with FCE3.5 HD too.

Will iMac Intel based computer see Sony DCR-HC96?

Anyone out there had experience downloading image data from the Sony DCR-HC series camcorder to iMovie? I under that a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire connection via Sony's Handycam station is required. Optimally, iMovie should open automatically. I've read some conflicting reports in these forums. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS.

When you say "image data" are you talking about Photos or Movies.
For photos I imagine a USB connect would be required to transfer the photos.
For video a firewire connection is required.
iMovie should recognize the camcorder connected by firewire and allow you to import the mini DV tape to computer/iMovie.
This is a SD camcorder that shoots 4:3 and has a 16:9 shooting mode(not true widescreen)

I've never experienced iMovie opening automatically when any type of device was connected to the computer thru any type interface. Maybe other members know of this feature

If the Camera stores the videos and photos in a compatible format and the camera has a USB port, you can probably use this:

Sony HDR-FX7 import problem

I just got a new Sony HDR-FX7 and when I tyy to import it tells me there is no camera attached. I have been on the phone with Sony for over two hours and they have no idea. I have tried in FCP and imovie with no luck in either program. Everything works fine with my other cameras and other devices. Anybody have this problem or any suggestions on what to do.

I am having problems with FX7. I got it a few days ago and I can't capture footage from the tape. I'm able to see the tape BUT I can't capture in HD. Here is my thread, I have not received any solid advice from anyone as to how to solve this. I was at the apple store today and was told that sony was not quite compatable with FCP, but there is a work around and some sort of plug-in is required to get it going.

Sony DCR-HC96 / Panasonic GS500 compatibility

Does anyone have first hand experience of either of the two mentioned cameras working with the MacBook on iMovie.

I realize that you are looking for folks with first hand knowledge, and I do not have either the Sony or the MacBook, but I have read threads where others say they worked together. (I have no info on the Panasonic)
Do you have the Sony in VCR mode?
Are yo using a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire? (It will not come with your camera)
If you answered yes to the above questions, then there may be something wrong with:
your firewire cable, firewire port, docking station or Sony HC96 camera.

USP Sony DVD Camcorder Importing problem

Reading your messages, makes me feel that I should go out and get myself a HD Camcorder.
Right now however I have a USB version and I just cannot get it to handshake with Movie HD 6.
I appear to be following all the rules, but I cannot get passed the system thinking its DVD Play that I am after.
DVD Player takes the whole screen, plays the Camcorder DVD perfectly, but because the software takes the whole screen I am locked out from getting to any functions.
Is there another version of iMovie that I should be using?

iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders
no support via usb, no support of DVDcorders... sorry to say.. :-/

if you want to use the iApps, as they are intended for, you should buy a miniDV camcorder, standard or Hidef (=which needs a powerful Mac...)...
besides:
the DVDplayer app is a ... ehm, player app, no converter for DVD content to iM... and making the screen smaller: while the dvd plays, hit -1 or -0 to make the player window smaller...

Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0? I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue. Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere. The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video. Anyone having similar problems?

I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue. I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
1. Open Finder
2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
1. Open Finder.
2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.

IMovie HD 6 won'c import from Sony DCR-PC109

So I am among the legion of folks on here, it seems, that are having an issue with iMovie HD not able to import my video from my camera -- Sony DCR-PC109.
1] It worked on my last movie in August (cords, camera, etc)
2] NO, I did not put the plug in upside down
3] The camera is recognized in System Profiler/FireWire
4] In about three of the dozen or so times I have tried to get it to connect,iMovie HD 6 sees the camera for an instant...I go to rewind the tape, get "Can't Control Camera" message, followed by a total crash of iMovie. Sometimes the crash is so bad the entire machine hangs and I have to restart using the power button.
5] In the other 9 times, neither iMovie HD 6 nor iMovie 8 recognize the camera
6] iMovie HD 6 will not recognize the camera on either my Intel iMac, nor my G4 PowerBook
7] FireWire hard drives do connect easily
Not sure what is next. My gut is to become more down on Leopard. I've been a Mac user since 1979 (I was 7), and have switched about 10 other people to Macs because "they just work, never crash" and they are a pleasure to use. But it seems like every day lately, I have another glitch like this -- Safari crashes, relative's MacBook keys not working, Safari crashes AGAIN, Application Switcher not showing all the running apps, another security patch, etc. I'm glad I'm not one of those in these boards who are relying on iMovie for class projects.
Boy, I hope people love their iPhones, because it seems like Mac users are feeling the pain for their pleasure.

I'm having the same problem. I cannot get my iMac G4 (Leopard, iMovie HD 6) to recognize the tape in my Sony DCR-PC109 ("Cam").
Before I upgraded to Leopard, and before I upgraded to iLife '08 (except iMovie which maxes out with iMovie HD 6 for non-Intel Macs), I did not have a problem.
My situation might be slightly different in that I've connected the Cam base to the iMac via USB cable. The iMac recognizes the Cam Memory Stick. In fact, I was able to pull off a movie stored on the Memory Stick and add it to iPhoto. Turning the Cam on automatically launches iPhoto so the system recognizes it to some degree.
The Cam LCD says it's in LCD mode and the Memory Stick icon is visible on the desktop. I launch iMovie HD 6 and toggle from Edit mode to Import (the cam icon) and nothing. I have an iSight installed so iMovie prompts me if I'd like to record with iSight.
I was about to try and pull the video off using my Macbook Pro which has the iMovie '08 but found this other thread:

The last post mentions something about iSquint. Will have to try it. Very frustrating. Looks like there are many people having the same issue with DCR-PC109, and maybe some other models/makes.

Importing DV via USB with Sony DCR-HC36

I used two cameras recently to get different angles on the same shoot. One was the Sony DCR-HC36. I have also connected an external drive to have more space. But since I am using a MacBook Pro I only have one fire wire port so i am trying to use the USB port to import the film. Can I do this?
Would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem.

You can't use the USB from the camera. You should try daisy-chaining the camera through the drive. If the drive has two FW ports you should be able to do that.

What happens when, after you connect your cam, you go to File > Import Media?
But before that, does your cam require you to export your video files upon USB connection? I have a JVC Everio HD and I have to "Export to Library" from the cam's menu first-thing. This was true even in prior iMovie versions.

Import error from Sony DCR-SR57

I just bought a Sony DCR-SR57, which is a HDD camcorder.
Everytime I want to import a movie into iMovie it has an error, without saying what exactly the error is.
Another way to put the movies on my computer is by using the Sony as an external HDD, but then there's no sound, and also horizontal stripes in movies with a lot of movements.
Does anyone has the same problem?
Does anyone have solutions?

My camcorder is not on the list... Does it mean it isn't supported by iMovie? I hope not, because I paid 400 euros for it! :-S
There's really no bigger discription for the Import Steps. It goes like this:
1. I connect the camera with USB.
2. I open iMovie '09.
3. I see on my desktop a volume appear wich is my camcorder. At the same time Import Window in iMovie '09 opens.
4. I leave all the default settings (automatic) and I hit 'Import all'.
5. I see the window, I click ok.
6. It starts importing (white line which symbolises progress).
7. When the line (and the import) is completed, it is replaced with the message 'Error' indicated in red.
8. A dialog box appears which says: "iMovie can't import the fragment of your camera. Click on 'Archive everything' if you want to put a backup of the files on your hard disk".
9. That's it.
Please note that my iMovie runs in Dutch, so the translations of the text in the dialogue box and stuff might differ from the real English text.

Sony DCR SX65 has no audio after import

My iMovie app on my Mac Mini has lately not been loading audio after videos have been imported from my Sony DCR SX65. This is something recent as I have previous videos with sound but now it all my uploads do not have sound.

is the VHS tape old or the MiniDV tape? if VHS, it could be that the signal has just deteriorated over time--it can happen w/ poor storage(heat, laying tapes on flat, not re-wound, etc...) & just age. have you tried not recording to MiniDV & just sending the VHS signals through the Sony w/ out a tape in it? it could be that one or more of you audio cables has gone bad, you may have dirty heads in either the VHS VCR &/or the MiniDV or have audio in problems w/ the Sony &/or audio out problems on the VHS VCR or maybe you have a FW issue on the Sony or w/ your FW cable. if you have access to another cam &/or VCR as well as FW & A-V cables, start swapping/troubleshooting & see if your results improve.

Poor quality when importing from sony dcr-sr58

I've got a sony dcr-sr58e video camera, and for ages the quality has been poor, once i've, a) imported the footage from the camera into imovie then b) from there to idvd then c) watching it back on a tv
I thought it was just me being fussy, but friends and colleagues have noticed that its quality is comparable with an old vhs video camera!
I put all the settings to the max (high quality etc....)on the camera but to no effect, and have checked the settings on imovie
The sony support have stated that its probably a problem with imovie (which it doesn't seem to be)
Fot the record i'm running OSX 10.6.8 with imovie version 9.0.4
If anyone else has had a similar problem and solve dit i'd be very grateful to hear

Hello kellyfromkenley, Depending on how you move the video or share the video from iMovie to iDVD it can make a big difference. One way is to go to the Share Menu > Share to iDVD. But the better is to Share to Media Browser instead. Try this:
Go back to iMovie and open your Project in Project Library.
Go to Share Menu > Share to Media Browser
Choose the Large size and let it run until it finishes
Quit iMovie and open iDVD.
In iDVD click on the Media Button, then click on the Movies button and look for your project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser itself.
Drag that project icon into the iDVD project window and burn another disk
I think you'll see an increase in the visual quality using this method.
The reason this has an effect on the visual quality is there's a whole different set of operations performed on the video when you first Share to Media Browser. The side effect of those changes in steps is a much better looking DVD from your iMovie project.

Can't Import more than one DV tape. (Sony DCR-PC120E)

Importing video from my Sony DCR-PC120E camcorder works with the first DV tape and then stop working with following tapes.
Only workaround is to reboot the Mac.
All Transports keys are working except the play command either in manual or automatic mode.
In automatic mode, the tape rewind fine but doesn't play.
All software are up to date. (iMovie 7.1.4, MacOS 10.5.4, QT 7.5.5)
Any idea ?

I did read that the firewire port stays powered even while my Mac Pro is off, and that is why the main power supply must be disconnected in order to fully reset the port, but this is apparently not necessary as a restart (not even shutdown, just restart) allows me to import another DV tape.
Perhaps the better question is to ask what is being reset with my computer that allows me to import another DV.
Apparently the port stays active, so it isn't the port.
Its not the camera, I've tried power cycling it while the machine is on with no change.
Its not the iMovie preference file, it doesn't change at all when the computer is restarted.
Something seems to be running in the background on the operating system itself (10.5.2), or a remnant from iMovie even after program quit that remembers it had control of my camera.
Since it doesn't seem that everyone has this problem (only select DV players/camcorders), it would seem that it is somehow related to my specific model of camera. But as it is not the camera itself (else the power cycle of the camera should resolve), perhaps it is the driver OSX is using to connect to my camera?
Does anyone know a way to, in a sense, "force quit" a stubborn driver instance?
