Sony DCR-PC55 worked w/ iMovie, doesn't with iMovie HD 6.0.2

I was able to import video from my Sony handycam - iMovie was able to see the camera, control it, and even automatically import video. I "upgraded" to iMovie HD, and now the exact same camera, docking station and firewire cable no longer works. iMovie HD is unable to connect to the camera at all. What changed?
I've tried hard resetting the camera, resetting the time in the camera to match my Mac, replacing the iLink/FireWire cable, and the "workaround" using GarageBand, all to no avail. Very frustrating...
Is it relatively easy to uninstall iMovieHD and reinstall iMovie? I'm not sure what else to try at this point.

Hi Craig
May be You find some help in my list:
Print it out and tic one idea at a time.
Mac:
- hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ I wonder how full your Mac's hard disc is. (David Babsky) A near full hard disk prevents Import/Capture.
10% free is recommended + space for Import/Capture + work space (about 4 to
5 times the amount needed for Capture) eg on a 200Gb hard disk You need 20Gb + (one hour tape)
13Gb + 50Gb = about 80 to 90Gb free space.
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
◊ Reset PRAM
◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
- software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
◊ Did You select the right sort of project? DV, DV Widescreen, HDV 1080i , HDV 20p, MPEG-4 or iSight.
iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
◊ Cheque FW connection at Camera end. OK? (Adam Smith1)
◊ Cheque FW connection at Mac end. OK?
Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward resp. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ connect camera to power-line, not battery-only....(Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Canons don't allow daisychaining on firewire, make it "only device" on port (Karsten Schlüter)
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.

NEWS: Jerry Harris writes:
I know that in a lot of the new Sony HD cameras, iMovie requires that you turn iLink Conv off. I would look for a similar setting for your camera. This setting has to do with shooting a movie in one format, and using the camera to import as a different format. For instance, if you shoot HD footage and have iLink conv on - the camera will send DV to the computer etc...
So, case in point: look for a setting on your camera that has to do with the video format and see if that helps.
I had a similar problem -
Macbook + iMovie HD + HDV Camera = No import
Took me a little while to work out that the project file I had opened and was trying to capture into was set to DV and not HDV 1080i, hence iMovie was not detecting my H
DV camera's signal - hence always reverting to the isight camera.
Try opening a new project. At the filename dialog box, you should see an 'options' button which should allow you to select the appropriate video format depending on your needs. You should be able to choose between DV, DV Widescreen, HDV 1080i and HDV 720i. Choose DV or DV Widescreen if you're about to import from a DV camera. iMovie's default might be HDV.
All the best!.. "ahroyboy"

  • I can no longer get my MacBook to recognize the same camera (Sony DCR-SR68) I've been doing this with for the last year.  I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.1 - did I make a mistake to upgrade my software ????!!!!

I am trying not lose my mind - and I won't even go into the Paralells issues.
My Grandmother just had a stroke, and I just want to get the video from some of this summer's parties with her.
Same MacBook,  Same Sony DCR-SR68 Handycam,  Same IMovie
The only difference is the 'new'  'upgrade'd software.  The time I could be spending with my family, I am just drowning in all my computer issues
that I never had before this upgrade.
    Help !

After plugging in your camcorder, I would run Software update just one more time.
I would also try to see if the app "Image Capture" doesn't see your camcorder. This is found in your applications folder but you can get to it easily by hitting command and space bar to bring up spotlight and then typing "Image Capture".
the current version of iMovie is 9.0.7
you could try creating a new user and seeing if the camera doesn't connect from there.
if it doesn't then you might need to find a friend with a compatible OS until Sony decides to update it's support for OSX.
I looked on their site but it doesn't seem like they've ever supported it with your model.
you might also want to send feedback to apple as to your experience, although their support is limited to their own hardware, so calling Sony might be a better idea...

  • Will my sony dcr-ip55 work with imovie 08?

Sorry, I'm not up with all the formats but imovie hd 6.0.3 would not import footage shot with a sony dcr-ip55 which records in the micro mv format. Will iMovie 08 work with this format or do I need some sort of converter?
    Mark

    Probably.
"iMovie supports standard and high definition video, as well as the most popular formats, including DV, HDV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and even AVCHD."
    microMV is recording in MPEG-2.
Bring your camera to your Apple dealer and try it out.

  • Sony DCR-PC55 and DCR-PC101 Compatibility?

I just switched from PC’s to Mac and now in the market for a new video-editing program.
I have two Sony Handycams, DCR-PC55 and DCR-PC101. Does anyone know if either is compatible with FCE HD? They were not listed on the Apple's Qualified Devices list, but both have ilink (firewire?) connections.
    Thanks!

  • Sony DCR-HC30 --- footage in iMovie breaks apart upon import

    Hello,
I'm having trouble importing camcorder footage from my Sony DCR-HC30.
The footage plays fine in the camcorder but after I transfer it to iMovie, It breaks apart and the transfer stops.
I have successfully transferred footage from this camcorder into iMovie in the past.
I've tried a new firewire cable but it hasn't helped --- although at least
iMovie recognizes the camcorder now (with my old firewire cable it didn't)
Any assistance would be much appreciated
    Thanks very much!
    Mike

    Hi Sue,
I got the footage from my camcorder safely on board my PowerBook (and am backing up to an external hard drive even as we speak --- certainly nothing wrong with my stalwart and intrepid firewire port!)
    Woo Hoo!!!!!!!
I can now proceed with my project --- work on which came to a screeching halt several days ago...
    (It'll be on www.computershy.com)
Just as the import was starting from iMovie (during my many failed attempts) --- I briefly saw something like "importing QuickTime movie".
If iMovie was under the impression that it was importing a QuickTime movie from the camcorder, that would explain the distorted footage (but not why iMovie was having problems seeing the camcorder at all...)
I didn't see that message during the imports thad did work.
    I'm gettting a new camcorder
Thanks for all your help! You were there in my time of need!

  • Will a Sony DCR-HC90E work with imovie on my G4 ibook ??

    Hi
Looking to buy a camcorder to use with my G4 ibook.
will the above work and will i have to buy anything extra to
    get it to work ??
any other info on other camcorders welcome.
I am a complete beginner so basic answers please
    Cheers Perry

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
    Yes, it'll work.
You'll also need to buy a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (also known as DV or i.Link) cable to connect a camcorder to your Mac. This cable will not be in the box, although a USB cable will probably be. The USB cable is for transferring stills, not video.
For a review of this camcorder (..it may take a while to load..) read here.
For other cams to look at, read here.

  • Sony DCR SR 82 and iMove compatability

I was having a lot of difficulty uploading video to iMovie with this camera. After praying a while God led me to do a couple things and I want to share them with you!
    1. When you plug in the camera it will bring up a list on the camera screen to connect to the computer. Hit the "X" in the upper left corner to get out of that screen
    2. Go to the home page and select the middle button (it looks like a file cabinet and is titled "others")
    3. Under this list, hit down to get to the second page, and choose the only button, labeled "computer."
    4. This will bring up a similar screen but if you choose the top left button(for the HDD) it will connect with iMovie
    5. Pray to God!

How come my iMac worked with my Pegasus R4 and R6 hard drives and my New Mac Pro does not?  I have disk mounting issues when my Mac Pro goes to sleep.  It also shuts down in the middle of editing with Final Cut Pro X.  When opening Final Cut Pro X after I return to work, I have to reboot the Pegasus drives for the to be recognized by the Mac Pro.

  • Urgent! please help - Sony DCR PC106E

    Hi
I have a Macbook pro and I have read that in order to transfer videos from my Sony DCR PC106E camcorder to Imovie I needed a firewire and I bought that today but it's still not reconising my camcorder. Do I need to download some software that I'm  not aware of in order for this to work?
Please help I'm working against the clock, I need to transfer 7 tapes before tonight because I need to return it to my friend.
    Thanks.

    Hi
And Camera menu - must be set to DV-out. (on Camera)
    I have a PC-330E - works greatly
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Final Cut Express & Sony DCR DVD-405 Compatible?

    Long story short . . .

Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?

Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?
The 405 is a camera that produces Mpeg 2 files and that means no direct working with FCE, third party conversions required.
The HC96, being a Mini DV camera, will fit like a glove.
FCE works with DV, HDV or AVCHD (version 4 only using Intel chip Mac)
