Sony DCR-SR68 video camera

I bought a used Sony DCR - SR 68 video camera, which takes very nice videos. The problems started when I tried to connect the camera to my computer to download the videos; the computer would not recognize the camera. I bought a new patch cord directly for Sony parts, but it made no difference. My question is this; was there supposed to be a CD software disc that came with the camera when it was bought new that a person would download into his/her computer so that the computer would "see" the video recorded when you plugged it into the computer? Any info anyone could send me would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Don

Hi Don, Please click Here for the trouble shooting steps to get your Camcorder recognized by the computer when connected with an USB cable.
To import your files from the Camcorder to your PC please download the PlayMemories Home software from the link: http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=DCRSR68&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/down... . Thanks- Calvin.

  • How to install software (on CD) for Sony DCR-SR68 video camera on my 2009 MacBook Pro

How do I install software for a Sony DCR-SR68 video camera on my 2009 MacBook Pro? The manual that came with the camera says the software cannot be installed on "a Mackintosh", that I should contact Apple.

I think that's pretty clear, don't you? (And, if it does say "Mackintosh", I'll eat my bowler hat.)
You can't use the supplied software with Mac OS X. Either install Windows on your Mac, if you wish to use this software, or find out (eg, by googling) what other Mac users do with this camera.

  • How can I connect a Sony DCR-PC110 video camera with iMovie and import my videos?

How can I connect my Sony video camera DCR-PC110 with iMovie in order to import my old videos?

    Hi
This Camera has three types of ports.
    - Analog-out
    - USB
    - I.Link = FireWire = IEEE1394 = Digital in/out = DV-terminal
And Your Camera only can send Photos via the USB-connection - NO VIDEO.
So You Must get a FireWire Cable and eventually a ThunderBolt/FireWire converter Cable to get Import to work.
There are no real way around this.

  • OS X does not see my Sony DCR-PC110 video camera?

I just got the new all in one 27" MAC and could not wait to start editing my videos. Then a problem, I hook up my Sony DCR-PC110 with fire wire and nothing happens. The camera does not show up in the system at all, and of course Final Cut Express 4.0 show "No Comunication" instead of "VTR OK".
Is this camera no longer supported?
Is there anything I can try to get it to work?
Last but not least, if there is a compatability problem how can I get my collection of the kids video from the digital tape into Final Cut Express?
Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

    Hi
As I see it - it should work.

    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move

    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • I can no longer get my MacBook to recognize the same camera (Sony DCR-SR68) I've been doing this with for the last year.  I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.1 - did I make a mistake to upgrade my software ????!!!!

I am trying not lose my mind - and I won't even go into the Paralells issues.
My Grandmother just had a stroke, and I just want to get the video from some of this summer's parties with her.
Same MacBook,  Same Sony DCR-SR68 Handycam,  Same IMovie
The only difference is the 'new'  'upgrade'd software.  The time I could be spending with my family, I am just drowning in all my computer issues
that I never had before this upgrade.
    Help !

After plugging in your camcorder, I would run Software update just one more time.
I would also try to see if the app "Image Capture" doesn't see your camcorder. This is found in your applications folder but you can get to it easily by hitting command and space bar to bring up spotlight and then typing "Image Capture".
the current version of iMovie is 9.0.7
you could try creating a new user and seeing if the camera doesn't connect from there.
if it doesn't then you might need to find a friend with a compatible OS until Sony decides to update it's support for OSX.
I looked on their site but it doesn't seem like they've ever supported it with your model.
you might also want to send feedback to apple as to your experience, although their support is limited to their own hardware, so calling Sony might be a better idea...

it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • My sony DCR-SR68 will not connect, stuck on "preparing"

I have tried to connect my sony DCR-SR68 via USB cable, the camera displays proper screen (to choose USB connection for the internal HD), I choose the USB connect, then the screen stays stuck on "preparing."
It's supposed to be communicating with the computer, but it stays like this for well beyond 30 minutes.

If you are attempting to use the camera with iMovie Apple publishes iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras this located by clicking

In checking it appears your camera is supported, now all you need to do is learn to use iMovie. I would recommend getting started by clicking

Looking up your camera online, I found it is capable of 1920 x 1080 Full HD 60p Recording. It's the 60p (60 frames per second Progressive) that's the problem I think. iMovie '11 will do 60i (Interlaced). You might need to convert it from the format the camera currently uses into another format to get it into iMovie. Read more about it on this link here: How to import 60p footage From that message thread comes the recommendation to use ClipWrap to convert the camera's video clips now that they are in 60p:

Use ClipWrap to rewrap to QuickTime. Import the files. Edit in either 59.94 or 29.97. The latter if you want to use the high frame rate for slomo

Does anyone have the Sony HDR-XR500V video camera??
Is it compatible with a G5 PowerPC? Any pros? or cons? Please advice.

I'd stay away from Sony unless you are buying pro stuff, but even then...
Sony software is only compatible with windows & their mac support is pretty much non-existant.
plus, hard drive camcorders are a terrible idea! if you start having problems, poof, there goes the hours of footage. Even the Sony cams that use flash cards are a bad choice - you usually have to buy their magic gate cards.
I'd stick with Panasonic or Canon cameras that are SDHC+Internal or just SDHC. AT least this way the cards can be replaced, you can expand the memory, & it's SD - much cheaper to buy than the magic gate cards.
check out camcorderinfo.com for more info & reviews.
Now, to import your footage, you will need an app like Voltaic as importing AVCHD with Apple's video apps is only supported on Intel machines. You can still edit with iMovie or Final Cut - the versions that support HD, but the initial import from the camera will have to be done with the 3rd party utility.

  • Sony DCR-HC32 miniDV cam importing into iMovie as one long clip?!?

I just picked up a great deal on a Sony DCR-HC32. The biggest problem that I'm having is that it imports the video into iMovie as one long, continuous clip. With my other camera, a Canon ZR70mc, when I shoot and import the video it's as individual clips. The Sony makes it one long clip and then how does one edit a movie? I'm puzzled. Hopefully this isn't just a glaring problem with the camera, but a setting that I can fix! Any help you can offer would be great!
    Thanks!
    Tim.

This is not retro-active: it won't fix any clips you've already shot
In some Sony video cameras (including my Hi8 analogue one) you can timecode the tape even after you have shot the footage, without in any way disturbing the footage, as the timecode and date information is contained on a seperate track on the tape.
As regards our rediculous revertion to GMT, when our timezone should in any case be the same as the rest of Europe, I can tell you that all my videos shot between November and March are out by one hour, and have been for years!

  • Aluminium macbook to sony pc5e (dv video camera) connectivity

Hi, hope someone may be able to help. I have an old sony pc5e mini dv video camera and would like to connect it to my aluminium mac to download some content. Is this compatible and if so, what would I need in terms of cables and software etc. I would assume that unless a firewire input is available then it won't work? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

I had similar problem. Bought new HDR-HC9 camera. Took tape from older mini dv camera, and recorded some test footage. Created new imovie project, and the portion of the tape recorded in hi def comes over fine, the portion of the tape recorded in standard (on the old camcorder) all I saw was the blue screen.
I also tried playing and importing some tapes that were recorded entirely on the old camera (no mix of hi def and standard on the same tape) and had the same result: iMovie saw camera, would control rev and play, video would play on camera but iMovie has blue screen.
I tried the iLink setting from the camera playback menu (HD->DV conversion) with no luck. I made sure my iMovie project was appropriate for the recorded mode (DV widescreen) with no luck. Then I happened on the solution. Go to the camera settings in video camera mode, change the recording mode from Hi Def to standard DV. At this point all the tapes recorded in standard mode (DV widescreen) from the old camera can be imported into iMovie6 just fine. I know this sounds weird, since the record mode should not effect playback (?) but it works none the less.
I have not yet experimented with importing hiDef footage with camera in standard record mode, but I expect that if there are problems, that making sure the record mode on the camera is synced with the type of footage you are playing into iMovie is the solution.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sony HDD SR45 video camera offline status

OK, I'm a newbie at this...
I bought a Sony Handycam camcorder and Premiere Pro CS3 software and need some direction getting started with the initial setup windows with the camera's specs. I can't seem to get Premiere Pro to recognize my camera even though I have properly connected the camera to my computer with the supplied cable. When I click File>Capture a window appears in which I'm supposed to make sure the camera is recognized by the software. In the check status window, it always says OFF Line.

I am not generalising against Wedding videographers at all.
It is just in Jims case...he happens to be one and has built his videography business around tape based MiniDV workflow that he can not see past.
(This is not about HD vs SD or price of cameras or type of camera)
Jim continually reiterates about MinIDV in a tape workflow being "best". Maybe he is saying it is "best for him" but it comes across as "best for everyone" because Jim says so... "I normally recommend..."
Obviously John T Smith agrees with him
    > have to agree with Jim... anything other than DV-AVI just isn't designed to be edited, and therefore won't edit well in Premiere
This statement, like Jims constant assertions in this regard are simply wrong and misleading. Why would Jim even consider other cameras if he truly believed what he is saying (eg. The Scarlet Camera, Pannys).
Point is....its not "best for me" and the work I do and I have no problem editing material other than DV-avi.
No wonder Premiere is considered by many Film Company/Organisations to be a Non Professional Editor when the actual Premiere Users have such limiting opinions of their NLE.
Thankfully there are others that have moved on.

  • Sony DCR-SR68 has a NightShot Function?

    I want this camera
but I need a NightShot function
    does it has?

Sony advertised the NighShot function heavily in camcorders that had it, but I haven't seen it advertised in years.  Not even sure if it is as feasible with the CMOS sensors now in use as opposed to the CCD sensors in the NightShot cameras.
I'm fairly certain it was removed due to all of the abuse of the function (use of an IR-sensitive camera in daylight).
If you REALLY need IR sensitivity, you might be able to have a camera modified to remove the "hot mirror" IR blocking filter.  Some companies offer this service for DSLRs, not sure about camcorders.
