Sony dcr-trv7e compatible?

Apple says imovie '08 is compatible with more camcorders. Anyone know if this includes the old Sony dcr-trv7e mini dv?

Sorry, but I have a Sony DCR-TRV950 camcorder, and when I connect to my brand new MBP through Firewire, with iMovie open, NOTHING happens. When I bring up the import menu, it doesn't even see it as a camera. It doesn't matter if it's VCR or Camera mode. At the same time, my Windows PC can see t just fine, and I can download the videos recorded with it into Windows Movie Maker. It's so frustrating to see Windows do a better job here than Apple.

  • Sony DCR-TRV19 Compatible w/ FCP?

    Hello,
Is a Sony DCR-TRV19 mini DV Camera compatible with FCP5?
I've gone through the compatibility lists on this site and can't find this camera listed anywhere.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Marc Griffin

It should be OK. It's got an i.Link connector,
which you can use with a 4-pin-to-6-pin Firewire cable
and plug into your computer's Firewire 400 connector.
In FCP, choose the standard DV-NTSC setting with Firewire device control.

  • Sony DCR-TRV320 Compatible?

I just bought a new iMac Intel just last month, and well, this is actually the first time I have hooked up my old camera to this machine. I have connected the camera to a Firewire cord, and opened a new project in iMovie. Somehow, the camera isn't showing up. The only thing that came up was me -- via iSight. Odd?
I have been using this camera -- importing and exporting -- on iMac computers since 2003. The camera works fine with the same Firewire cord on the iMac G4 and the old iMac G5 (non-Intel models). Is there something that I don't know about?
I have also been researching the forum, but sadly, no perfect answers, yet. I have even been to several Sony and iMovie help sites with no results.
One message in this forum directed us to see if the camera shows up on System Profiler, and mine actually did. But somehow, it isn't showing up on iMovie 6, which also includes iMovie 8, and Final Cut Express. Is my camera compatible?
Any help or information will be helpful...Thanks!

...Well, thanks for your stab! But um, I don't think iMovie 6, or even future versions, have iSight preferences in their programs. So, I'm not sure why the iSight would come up. I'm assuming if iMovie cannot detect a camcorder (which I find a little odd), then iSight is the secondary choice?
Anyway, I am still open for future tips and information!

  • I have a Sony DCR -SR32 which does not appear in the list of compatible cameras for imovie '11. Does anyone know if there is way to import files from this camera ?

I have a Sony DCR-SR32 HDD video camera which does not appear in the list of compatible cameras for imovie '11. Does anyone know if there is way of importing video from this camera to imovie ?
    Thanks
    Pheona

    Greetings Pheona,
That appears to be a hard drive based camecorder.  Usually these mount on the desktop of your computer as a little white hard drive icon.  If you go inside you should be able to find the movie files the camera is saving.  See what format they are (the last 3 letters at the end of the file name is a good place to start).
You can drag the movie files from the camera hard drive to the computer to copy them.  Then convert them with a video file conversion program to a format iMovie can understand.
Try converting one of the files using a video file conversion program like Video Monkey: http://videomonkey.org/downloads/
In the "Convert to" drop down menu choose "DV" (Preferred), "Quicktime", or "MP4".  Then import the resulting file into iMovie and see if that works any better.
If that program can't convert the files you can try another file conversion program:

  • Is Sony DCR HC 96 MiniDV compatible with MAC

I have read mixed reviews on this - some folks say they have been able to use it with iMovies (through firewire) while others have not.
Is this model from Sony compatible with imovie HD? Any feedback on usage or experience ? Thanks very much
    ibookG4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Vikmac:
    Welcome to discussions!
While I own several Sonys that work very well with the Mac, I do not own the Sony DCR HC 96.
But, as long as you have the proper 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, I see no reason at all that it wouldn't work!

  • Final Cut Express & Sony DCR DVD-405 Compatible?

    Long story short . . .
Received a gift "Sony DCR DVD-405" (uses USB, NOT firewire) with intention of home video and family use. Happy with iMovie. No need for more.
    But . . .
It is a major pain in the butt to get iMovie & camera to talk. Bought two 3rd party applications and still not happy.
Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?
I will have access to Final Cut Express for free through work in the Fall.
    Jeremy

Will Final Cut Express work smoothly with this camera or should I Craigslist it and buy a Sony HC96?
The 405 is a camera that produces Mpeg 2 files and that means no direct working with FCE, third party conversions required.
The HC96, being a Mini DV camera, will fit like a glove.
FCE works with DV, HDV or AVCHD (version 4 only using Intel chip Mac)

  • How can I import a movie from sony DCR trv340 tape to Macbook Pro?

I have started using iMovie, I know it's been there quite a while, and I am trying to imort from a tape using Sony DCR-TRV340. I can import tapes created on the TRV340 but other tapes that were created on a different Sony device, from back in late 1980's will not load. When I pllay them on the camcorder they appear and I can watch them in iMove but they will not record. It says NO DATA FROM DEVICE. Is there a way to fix that or a setting that needs to be changed?
    Any hel would be appreciated.

A dual mode camcorder with both a photo camera and camcorder function.
While Apple doesn't seem to list these as compatible, have you tried connecting with a firewire cable, and turning on iMovie and seeing if it recognizes your camcorder?
Here is Apple's commentary on trying to get a camcorder to work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059#2
What about contacting Samsung, often companies have a knowledge base.
I know this isn't what you were asking, but if you have something recorded you absolutely must have, I have a hunch a friend with an older windows computer might be able to get it downloaded, then you could transfer it by thumbdrive to imovie.
    Just a thought.

  • I can no longer get my MacBook to recognize the same camera (Sony DCR-SR68) I've been doing this with for the last year.  I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.1 - did I make a mistake to upgrade my software ????!!!!

I am trying not lose my mind - and I won't even go into the Paralells issues.
My Grandmother just had a stroke, and I just want to get the video from some of this summer's parties with her.
Same MacBook,  Same Sony DCR-SR68 Handycam,  Same IMovie
The only difference is the 'new'  'upgrade'd software.  The time I could be spending with my family, I am just drowning in all my computer issues
that I never had before this upgrade.
    Help !

After plugging in your camcorder, I would run Software update just one more time.
I would also try to see if the app "Image Capture" doesn't see your camcorder. This is found in your applications folder but you can get to it easily by hitting command and space bar to bring up spotlight and then typing "Image Capture".
the current version of iMovie is 9.0.7
you could try creating a new user and seeing if the camera doesn't connect from there.
if it doesn't then you might need to find a friend with a compatible OS until Sony decides to update it's support for OSX.
I looked on their site but it doesn't seem like they've ever supported it with your model.
you might also want to send feedback to apple as to your experience, although their support is limited to their own hardware, so calling Sony might be a better idea...

  • My iMac doesn't recognise my camera Sony DCR-PC330E

    Hello,
PC user for years, I decided 3 weeks ago to buy an Imac 27" on AppleStore (Mac OS X 10.6.7)
    I've got a camera Sony DCR-PC330E.
I've bought this cable in order to connect my cam on the FireWire port of the iMac.
When I connect the cam with it, nothing happens The presence of the cam is not detect, whereas ther is no problem on my PC.
Does my camera not compatible with Mac ?
    Should I installed a specific driver ?
Thanks by advance for the attention you accord to this post.
    CedriKo
PS: I sorry for my bad english.

Hi, I have been reading briefly the instruction manual for your camera online.
It would seem that for connection to an iMac you should use a USB cable and not Firewire.  The USB cable was supplied with the camera.
I also get the impression that you should have with the camera a CD which has software that you need to install on your iMac.
May I suggest that you get hold of your camera's instruction manual and read the instructions, I think that you should be able to solve this yourself then!
    Good luck

lllaass speaks the truth. Macs have always been "plug & play" with everything except cameras. That's the one area where you MUST have compatible hardware or you're simply S.O.L.

  • Older Sony mini DV cam (Sony DCR-PC5) & imovie hd "no camera attached"

My imovie hd does not appear to be compatible with my Sony DCR-PC5 using a mini dv tape. When I plug my fire-wire cable from the camera into my computer my imovie does not recognize the camera. (although my camera recognizes with "DV IN). How can I get imovie to recognize my camera so I can begin downloading?

    Hi
My list to try to find the problem.
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    *Using WHAT versions ?*
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape.
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
    More
    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted

  • Sony DCR-SR300

My apologies if this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if anyone knew if the Sony DCR-SR300 would be compatible with the new Final Cut Express, as I am contemplating purchasing both. I've heard that it is incompatible with iMovie6, which I have now. I've also heard contradictory statements on whether or not it works with iMovie8, but I've also heard that iMovie8 isn't a great upgrade to begin with, although I wouldn't know.
Would purchasing Final Cut Express and the Sony DCR-SR300 for my new Macbook Pro be compatible?
Also, does anyone have any opinions on the Sony DCR-SR300? Amazon seems to rate it pretty highly as a top of the line Standard Def camera.
    Thanks again

It's on the approved list for iMovie 08, but I don't think it will work with FCE directly as it's an MPEG-2 camera and nothing from Apple indicates that MPEG-2 cameras are supported.

  • Sony DCR-DVD308

I received the Sony DCR-DVD308 camcorder for Christmas and have read all previous posts on this camcorder. I have tried all the solutions with no luck. I can not import the video into iMovie- it won't read a new disk image, etc. I want to be able to import directly into iMovie instead of ripping it in another program. I still have iMovie HD 6 and am wondering if I will need to "upgrade" to iLife '08 to solve my problem. I asked specifically for this camcorder because of the compatible camcorders list that apple had posted. I guess I assumed if it works with iMovie '08 it would work with iMovie 6. Anyone else had any suggestions for me? Thanks!

That was an unfortunate assumption to make. iMovie 08 is a whole new take on moving making, actually designed to suit people who only want quickie little movies to upload to You Tube. If you like your iMovie 06 for what it can do, you probably won't like the new version.
DVD cams are designed to produce an immediate gratification type of movie experience, just like the DVD's you rent at the video store. The MPEG2 format is not meant to be edited. That was another bad choice on your part.
MiniDV tape cams are what iMovie 06 and earlier versions are designed to work with, so my advice is to return that cam for something that will work.

  • Device Compatibility - Sony DCR TRV 355e

Does anyone know if the Sony DCR TRV 355e is compatible with Final Cut Pro. A client has shot footage on this camera that he wants us to use but we don't have a Hi8 camera or deck so we are going to have to use his camera and connect via firewire. The only problem is it is not listed on the Apple device support page - http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php
Has anyone used this camera before or know if it can connect to final cut before we invite him in on a wasted journey?

    The other thing I suggest...
Hi8 was a 'slippery' format to bring in digitally. I always had sync issues if I captured the whole tape.
This gets to be a pain... but if you want to stay free of sync issues capture 15 minutes max each pass.
Anything over that and you'll get slight audio drift that by 15 minutes starts to become noticable and by 1 hour is off by as much as a second or more!!
If you need to overlap some sections make sure you get some pre-roll.
It will work... just a pain.
    Good luck,
    CaptM
