Sony ex1 import difficulties

I am new to FCPX and I am using a Sony ex1. I have the software XDCAM transfer. I cannot remember if I connected my camera the first time using iLink (firewire) but I could see the clips coming in on the Camera monitor. It has been a couple of months since and yesterday I connected via the USB and the message came up "USB CONNECTING". In the XDCAM software I could see it importing and I selected an external HD. All my clips that came in are in an Untitled  folder as Quicktime .mov clips. I then imported into FCPX.
My real questions are
1. Is this normal?
2. I thought that the clips came in as a different file type last time
3. Am I safe to wipe the card on the camera
Sorry if all this is very amaturish but I am making the transition to HD from iMovie 6HD which I used and never liked the "new versions" of iMovie
Many thanks
Dave

The quick answer is no. The Sony EX1 is not on the [supported list|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290]
However, it might work since the EX1 supports HDV stream through firewire, which iMovie can handle. It also supports MPEG2 through USB, which iMovie can handle but only for supported camcorders and only for standard definition. So if it works it all, it would likely be limited to HDV quality (1440x1080). So you would be using less than the full capabilities of the camera.
For the real answer...
1) If you own an EX1, take it to the Apple Store and plug it in and test it.
2) If you own an $8,000 camera, you probably also own Final Cut Pro or the equivalent, and you can import it that way and edit in AIC or ProRes422 in iMovie 09.
3) Check User Groups [like this one on Vimeo|http://vimeo.com/groups/XDcam]. (A quick check showed no iMovie users in this group.)
4) You might be able to import after processing through something like MPEG Streamclip with MPEG2 Playback Component.
Sorry for the speculation. I know you want a real yes or no.

  • How to import Sony EX1 files into FCS (that are already on HD in folders)

let me try an explain, I have bought some footage, and the person that sold me the footage gave me the raw files. I was shot using a SONY EX1. I have one too, as well as a EX3. My difficulty is that I'm not able to import the files into FCS... when I import my own footage I read it from the SXS using XDCAM Transfer, but as the footage he sold me is already on my HD and in the raw form (in folders divided into files)...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have been away on a shoot, but finally back, and still have not resolved the problem...I have try to do what you say, but XDCAM Transfer does not recognize the folders... it is strange...any other idea???

  • Sony EX1 files - import ok in CS4 but not CS3 - why?

    hi all
I've hired a Sony EX1 for the weekend, and CS3 (version 3.2 with EX support) will not import the video files - it gives an error message and teh files are nowhere to be seen.
I have looked online in various places and the general consensus seems to be that if you import the entire folder and then, although you still get the "unsupported or damaged file" error message, the files should show up ok.
    They don't. Not in CS3.
In CS4, the import works fine (although I still ghet the error message). The problem is, I find CS4 totally unstable, and unless massively successful patches are introduced, I will never work with it again (it cost me hundreds, maybe thousands of pounds n written-off editing time the only time I used it, because of constant crashes both on my laptop and my Dell system, and it still crashes regularly on the rare occasions I use it). I much prefer to work in CS3 which I found comparatively stable.
How come CS3 can't import the EX1 files, when everywhere I am look on the internet tells me it can?
Would be grateful to hear from anyone else who's had this problem .
    thks a lot

Be sure you use the Sony XDCam EX Clip Browser software to import the footage, as opposed to drag & drop the folders/clips.
Theoretically, you should be able to just D&D the BPAV folder, but there have been reports of wierd problems doing it that way.
I've used the EX with CS3 a lot, with no problems, but I always import with the Sony software..
RE CS4- what OS and how much RAM do you have? 32 bit/3-4GB is touch & go for CS4 HD editing; 64 bit/ 12-16GB is magic.
    Good luck

  • Importing a CS3 file to CS4 project with Sony EX1 xml offline media error

I'm importing CS3 projets into CS4 using Sony EX1 files.  In CS3, when you imported a folder containing EX1 HD files, both an XML and an MP4 file would pull into the bin, and if you brought the xml file onto the timeline, it would interpret and play.   In CS4, if the imported project contained references to the xml file, it displays the "Media Offline" thumbnail.   Is there a way to globally replace any reference to the xml file with the equiavlent mp4 file name?

You can't go backwards.  For the offline issue, try this:

  • Importing Sony EX1 and F3 files

wouldn't it be a nice thing if we didn't have to stumble around begging for help when we go into a new application, I feel I need a white cane and a dog right now with FCPX.....Whatever happened to manuals?
So can I import files from my Sony EX1-R and the Sony PMW F3 directly or do they first have to run through Sony's XDCam Transfer?....Thanks!

Hi Mark, yes I have imported media from FCP Studio to FCPX, just to see if it would work, and it does. But frankly when I've got the work loaded and started in Studio I just stay there. I haven't done any serious editing yet in FPX, but what I have done, ( when I can get the media to load ), has been ok.
For now and for me though the "paying work" stays in Studio. That works, I'm familiar with it and I haven't had the time to re-learn editing using FPCX. I'm hoping Tom, ( Tom Wolsky ), has a FCPX book in the pipeline that will be yet another of his excellent guides to these Apple programmes......Do you Tom?
Regarding your question as to whether I've seen any weird effects on some FCPX images I have found in the past with FCP or Avid that it's best to output any part of your edit that exhibits any "weirdness" to finished format and then check it, most times the moraying or strobing goes away on final output.
If you are working in FCP Studio on a MacPro with a Kona or similar card then of course you can use a reference broadcast monitor to check to see if any aberrations will be on your final output too.....I don't think we can do that yet using FCPX, (?).

  • Sony EX1 .mp4 files will not play in Mountain Lion

I have .mp4 files from a Sony Ex1 camera.  They are in the correct file structure in the BPAV folder.  They will open and play in Quicktime 7 but not Quicktime 10.2. (Black screen, no audio.)  They will not preview (black screen, no audio)   They will play in the Sony viewer.  Of course they will not import into a NLE.
This is what Quicktime 10.2 inspector says:
    MPEG-4, 1,920 x 1,080
Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
All the files worked fine till I "upgraded" to Mountain Lion
I can play .mp4 files I compressed myself.
    Macbook Pro 17"
    Mountain Lion 10.8.1

Perian was installed when my Mac Pro was running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard; but I removed it after installing OS 10.8 Mountain Lion since Perian is not compatible with the new OS.
    >> Are you sure the audio in those files isn't AC-3? Perian won't play AC-3 in Mountain Lion. <<
VLC will play the AAC audio files. It reports the following as their codec:  MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a) 48 kHz
Incidentally, I get the same results (no audio) when attempting to play the QuickTime audio files on a MacBook Air that is also running 10.8 Mountain Lion. When I boot into 10.6 Snow Leopard on the same computer, the files do play properly in QuickTime Player.

  • SONY EX1 and Cannon 5D together on same timeline?

    Hello
Need to edit EX1 and Cannon 5D footage on same timeline - both 1080p 30fps. What is best timeline? Pro Res 422? I know how to import SONY EX1 footage, but how to import/convert/edit 5D, and on same timeline as EX1 footage? Using FCP 7 latest.
Also, anything to watch out for, be aware of using these two together?
    Thanks much
    K

Convert both to ProRes. Or you can keep the XDCAM native, but convert the 5D to ProRes and use a ProRes timeline. 1080p 29.97 ProRes timeline.
DO NOT edit the native H.264 Canon files. FCP will choke.

  • Sony EX1 footage renders jumpy

    Hi,
This is frustrating me to know end.
I just imported a PPro Mac project into AE Mac with Sony EX1 footage.
When I render, some of the clips jump back and forth (forward and backward) randomly.
It plays fine in PPro and I can RAM Preview a single clip in a separate comp just fine, but a render or RAM Preview jumps.
    Any suggestions?

    I'm creating a work-around for the EX-1 black-dropped-out frames in After Effects (X64 CS3 CineForm):
    1. Edit a 'story board' in Premiere with the EX MP4 raw-files
    2. Convert only the files I need (from all the 150 shot) in the CineForm-HDlink app to .MOV files
//filesize will become a little more, will shift a couple of frames from the MP4-raw, quality the same
//HDlink is a BAD application, because I have to transcode every MP4 file seperately. MXF files are bugging in HDlink
//HDlink does NOT trancode the audio into the new .MOV file! Sucks.
    3. Replace the Premiere 'edit-MP4-raw-files' with the converted .MOV files in After Effects
    4. Re-sync all the audio, 'export audio' from the MP4-raw files in Premiere to AE
    5. Voila! Render without troubles
    I love Quicktime!
-Yeah, it sucks not to work natively-
Any new suggestions would really be appreciated!

  • Outputting standard definition from Sony ex1

I'm triyng to outputting standard definition from Sony ex1 clips as explained in this article http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/ex1_sd_outputyoung.html.
I got some motion files in the hd timeline. When I paste this file on the sd timeline the scale is totally different from the original.
    Any ideas on what happens?

We are working with Final Cut 5 and DVCProHD material... (which, btw, is a good codec to use for FCP 4.5)
Downcoverting a finished product for SD DVD works really good in Compressor 2. After editing in FCP, I find it best to export as Self contained QT of your project. Then importing that into Compressor... and use the Compressor Preset for the SD MPEG-2 Compression for delivery on DVD. It has worked great!
But, another way you could try.. is once you have a finished product edited in FCP.... Print to render it, print it to Video on your HDV camera...
Use the Camera to Playback and recapture the the downconverted video onto the computer. You may find the downcoversion a bit better this way.
    Good luck, hope this helps

  • Sony EX1 cameras and Final Cut Pro.

    Hello Everyone.
Looking to see what kind of video deck I would need to edit with. I might have a project in which a client video some project using the Sony EX1 cameras.
I'm using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4
    Any help would be great.
The client is from Canada, and I'm State side.
    Thanks
    Damon

This camera shoots tapeless...no deck. But the bad news is that your version of FCP doesn't support the format this camera shoots. You need at least FCP 6.

Has anyone used this new plugin by Sony to import Sony EX3 footage.
I havent been able to import files.  When using the import from camera tool, it doesnt see my cards or BPAV folders.
I currently use XDCAM Transfer which works great, but I am having playback problems with these imports.

Keen to know if anyone else is having these issues.

  • Edit Sony EX1 in FCE?

I've searched and searched and haven't found a solution. Is it possible to edit Sony EX1 footage in FCE 3.5? There has to be some kind of converter that will do this. I downloaded the XDCAM Transfer software but it said I was missing a lot of Codecs that come with FCP. Is it possible to download those codes to work with FCE?

FCE cannot work with the files directly.
FCPro from 6.0.2 (I think) on can.

  • Matching IPhone 4 Footage With Sony Ex1 On Timeline?

So just like title says I'm shooting a prank comedy show using the Sony Ex1 camera as master with several Iphone 4's (not the new 4os) as reaction shots and I was wondering what was the best way to set up my sequence or have the footage be the same so I dont have to render after every edit. Shoud I make all the footage Apple Pro Res through MPG Streamclip or whats my best option? Thanks for reading.

If you open the clip in fcp and hit command-9 you'll call up the clip settings.  Look under field dominance and if the settings is "none" it's probably progressive, otherwise interlaced.
Usually combining progressive and interlaced in the timeline will not require rendering to at least view.  But I'm not sure.  Should be an easy enuf test to run.
I'd use compressor to convert the footage, but running tests on your workflow is crucial in this kind of project.  The frames control pane in compressor has controls for scaling that can make a big difference in quality.  Remember, you can set ins and outs in the preview window in compressor to do a test on a small section of a clip.  You can also customize and save presets as you do tests.
