I bought a Sony external Hard Drive, but its not working with my Macbook

It is probably formatted for Windows.  You will have to reformat it for Mac in Disk Utility>Erase or download an application such as Paragon or Tuxera  to read and write to it.

  • Time Machine Backup Interrupted. Im using a Sony External Hard drive

i have a white macbook, version 10.6.8. I wanted to back up my mac so i connected my Sony External Hard Drive and used time machine. About a quarter way through the back up, i get this message saying to "You need to restart your computor. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." I cannot press/move the mouse in anyway or do anything when this message comes up. When i open my mac again a window comes up saying "You shut down your laptop because of probelm". The backup stops and fails. This has happened 3 times now and has never happened until i tried to back up . What seems to be the problem and what should i do to fix it?

Hi. This is called a kernel panic. You should make sure your software is updated, including any third party software you have. Keep in mind any software you may have recently installed. You may have to erase any  files that installed in the backup drive as they could be corrupted. Read this.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS3742

  • X.4.7 update, Sony external monitor, macbook, unresponsive

So I went the keyword route with my title... anyway. I have 4 Macbooks here (lucky me), 3 are plugged into Samsung 19inch widscreens, one into a 19inch Sony. The one in the Sony has the .7 update, the others do not. The one connected to the Sony has decided it doesn't like the monitor and on start up just freezes in a pastel coloured blue screen unless I unplug the external monitor... then it starts fine.
    Any ideas?

I heard that Apple re-released the 10.4.7 update for macintels. I would go to software downloads and get the 10.4.7 combo updater for Intel Macs, even if you don't need the combo install it instead of the standalone.
After install go through and do 'Repair Permissions' from 'Disk Utility'. Some will tell you otherwise but always do repair permissions after, and before some, installs.
I hope you get back going.

  • Installing Tiger (dvd) with sony external firewire DVD drive

    Helo all,
Can anyone tell me if the B/W G3 can boot up an OS X CD from an external firewire or USB DVD Room.
I want to upgrade my machine to Tiger but not having any luck with getting it to recognize the external DVD Rom on boot up.
It recognizes it with no problem once the OS is installed and logged into a user profile but the entire time during boot up I can't get it to boot from the drive.
I have tried the following key combinations (Don't know if they are supposed to work with the B/W G3):
    T - Firewire Target Mode
Command-Option-Shift-Delete - Bypass internal harddrive on boot
System Prefs > Startup Disk > Select DVD Room > Restart
Is there anything else I can try other then trying to find an IDE internal hard drive to plug into this machine?

B&Ws can not boot from Firewire drives.
Most Pioneer drives are bootable if installed internally. Certain other brands are also bootable (internally).

  • Windows XP doesn't open external monitor (Sony 19") at startup

I have a Sony external screen attached to my Macbook Pro which is partitioned using Bootcamp. My external screen works fine on the Mac side, but not on the Windows XP partition. I only get the laptop screen. I then configure XP using the NDVIA utility, and I finish and save the configuration. However, the next time I open Windows XP, only my laptop screen shows, and I then must go thru the entire NDVIA configuration process all over again. Microsoft said to talk with Sony, NDVIA, or Apple since they can't help. NDVIA doesn't talk to anyone, and Sony was friendly, but said to ask everyone else. The Apple Product Specialist said I should post the question on this forum. Can anyone help, please?

Since you're using Boot Camp you'll probably find it more beneficial to post your question in the Boot Camp forums:

I can't access password protection manager on my External Hard Drive to unlock it , I got updated antivirus and I always use safely remove to remove the hard drive. I see the UNLOCK APP Drive, and the Public Area, but when I run the "Password Protection Manager.exe" file at UNLOCK APP Drive, the bar will just be fulfilled by approximately 60% by showing "Loading...", then it stops for many seconds, and it starts to run the Installation file (PasswordProtectionManagerSetup_F.exe) which will delete all unlocked files if I accept it to install.

  • How to install Windows from an external cd-romd

since my previous thread was pretty much ignored - i dare someone again:
    To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the ** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
    Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.
    HELP!!! Anyone Please!!!!

OK, I reread your original post and you don't say if the Sony drive shows up in Finder if you insert a disc, it should.
That said, the point I think you're missing is that when BootCamp Assistant (BA) asks you to insert the Windows disc, the BA application does not read it. Instead BA tells OS X to reboot off the cdrom drive. Thus it's the bootstrap loader that has to know how to read off the specified device. Bootstrap loaders reside in firmware and are very limited programs. They generally only know how to detect selected key presses and how to read boot sectors of certain devices and pass execution to the loaded code. Reading from a USB connected optical device is not within the scope of a bootstrap loader.

  • External DVD drive not working

Need some help with this one:
    My sister-in-law has an iMac G4 1.25Ghz 17” LCD USB 2.0 with 10.4.11.
The internal DVD-ROM CD-RW died awhile back so she purchased a Sony external DVD-ROM CD-RW USB 2.0 to take its place.
    Everything was working fine.
Recently, she had some bad sectors on her HD (5 yrs old anyhow), so I purchased her a new HD, installed it and while I had the case open, I removed the broken internal DVD-ROM CD-RW. Installed a fresh 10.4.11
System profiler can see the USB Sony DVD-ROM CD-RW, but when a disk is installed, or when I open Apple DVD player, it says a disk drive cannot be found.
The DVD can be seen on the desktop.
System prefs is configured to open Apple DVD player when a DVD is inserted.
I hooked the new Sony drive to my setup (iMac G5 2.0) and the drive works fine when I put in a DVD.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
Any suggestion? I checked Sony’s site and there is no d/l’s for the drive.
    Thanks,
    --Bob Aldridge

    Hey Bob,
My understanding of this is that when you install the OS there is like a "shake hands" with the DVD-ROM chip on the internal ATA bus by the installer. The installer then installs/enables the necessary components to play DVDs.
Would removing the old broken DVD-ROM drive from the G4 cause the new external USB Sony not to work??
If you remove that drive that's probably why you get the:
"An installed DVD player cannot be found" error.
I did not re-apply any thermal compound on the heat pipes. Is the compound something I can get a Radio Shack?
Here's the exact procedure from the 1.25 Service Manual:
"This procedure requires the following tools:
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to remove the old thermal paste
    • Plastic stylus or plastic spatula to spread the thermal paste
    • Thermal paste (922-4757)
    Part Location
    1. Thoroughly clean the original thermal film from the mating surfaces (circled below) of
the bottom housing and thermal pipe. Use a plastic stylus to scrape the surfaces
clean. Note: Do not use an abrasive material or liquid cleaner.
    2. Squeeze a ball of thermal paste onto the mating surfaces of the thermal pipe.
    3. Replace the bottom housing.
Warning: The bottom housing has four torx screws that must be tightened to at least
17 in.-lbs. Use a torque driver (service tool 076-0899) to ensure that the thermal pipe
is firmly mated with the top base. If you do not have a torque driver, you must make
sure the screws are tightened by hand FIRMLY, BUT NOT FORCIBLY.
Failure to apply the thermal paste as described in this procedure, and failure to
tighten the torx screws as directed, could cause the computer to overheat and
    damage internal components."
I personally haven't had a 1.25 apart. The 700s and 800s I've had apart have a silicone pad like material or thick rubber compond on the heat pipes. The manuals for those machines refer to "thermal pads".
I think you could use a thermal pad material like from Micro Center, Comp USA or Radio Shack.
This is the Radio Shack stuff:
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2295074&cp=&sr=1&kw=therma lpad&origkw=thermalpad&parentPage=search
If the thermal stuff was not too badly damaged you'll probably be OK but I'd probably run Temperature Monitor for a while just to make sure.

  • I need to purchase an external disk drive...

Mine inside my Macbook died like everyone else's, and I'm looking for a new one.
I found several, but most of the time they say Windows for the operating system. I'm not sure if that means they won't work at all with a Mac, or if that is just talking about the Lightscribe program, or what.
I've seen other threads that say most all of them should work, but so far every single one I've looked at only supports Windows, what's the deal?

Well, seems we've misunderstood you then!
Here's an old article about a Mac user who picked up a Sony external drive which didn't claim compatibility with OS X, yet worked just fine:
    http://lowendmac.com/ed/bgray/bg07/1010.html
slightly more recent thread here, again discussing Sony external drives:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=425915
review on amazon.com about a Sony external drive. Review is dated Aug 21, 2008
    http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000SKWE9W?pageNumber=2f
Every google search I ran pulled up Sony external drives right away. If I was in your position, I'd check out the Sony options, find the ones you like best and read reviews by Mac users about them.
Regarding the "Windows OS only" issue, I'd say you probably wouldn't get support from the company, since they haven't claimed any compatibility with OS X. That doesn't necessarily mean the device won't work though.

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.

  • Change emergency restart to external optical drive?

My four year old emac has had increasingly more frequent incidents where there is no display after restarting. I am quite adept at resetting the PRAM. However, this last time, nothing worked: I reset the PRAM; reset firmware; pressed the reset button; reset permissions. What did work was inserting the TechTool Pro 4.0 disk into the superdrive and restarting while holding the "C" key. I have restarted a few times since then normally. However, I now have a problem with the superdrive which no longer spins normally - it goes clunk, clunk and ejects the disk after about 10 seconds. I do have a Sony external firewire DVD rewritable optical drive which works fine so I am not inclined to have the Superdrive repaired. But, finally getting to my question, can I change settings in advance so that holding the "C" key will restart from the external drive? I know I could chose this by holding the "option" key while restarting but I won't be able to do so if there is no display.

    ja-bo,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You can use the option key to bring up Startup Manager to select the external optical drive as the boot device.
Hvae you ever tested if the PRAM battery is discharged or below voltage spec? Replacement instructions are at eMac - Do-It-Yourself.
