Sony F55 for Wildlife Documentary

Dear Community, I am planning an important wildlife documentary series and seeking advice on best way to set-up my camera for good post-production colour and final delivery is television broadcast HD in PAL and NTSC. 1. Is XAVC 4K SLOG 3 good enough for my needs or should I invest in a raw recorder and get a 2K raw copy.  My issue is spending an addition 7K and backing up many TB.. or get the Ninja Shogun or Odyssey for that 2nd backup drive and get the pre-roll recording the Ninja has in place2. Frame Rate - what frame rate should I choose to preserve best quality and end up delivering NTSC and PAL?3. Lenses - I have the Optitek 1 but find it sometimes hard to use and wondering about what kinds of lenses to invest in as I need long focal length (new Sigma sports lenses) and nice wide lenses. Any advice on lenses and attaching to this camera would be helpful to know4. BCam - I am going to need a BCam for moving shots, dolly, etc.  I am thinking about A7sII so any advice on a good BCam for the F55 - sony or canon, etc. Thank you and I appreciate any advice on any one or all of the following as this is an ambitious project and looking for best solutions ...  Best, Ari 

Thank you again.  I appreciate the support on this one.  Ok, so my program is for big international broadcasters so consensus is UHD XAVC Slog3Cine is the right format to use for ending up HD TV broadcast.  The R5 and 2K raw record as a backup is always good to have to protect the shots for future manipulation and preservation, it's just a question of investing about 10K in recorder, cards and extra back-up solutions.  The big dilemma is the lens to use and time in the wild to change glass.  These are some options but truthflly can only get one expensive lens (question then of renting vs buying as after 5-6 trips, half the lens is paid for!).So list is:1. Cabrio 4K zoom lenses (2 models): Issue is which one as probably 19-90 is most useful for lots of establishing and some close ups when using a 2K crop and if I go with the 80-300 that doubles the cost and for that price I can buy th enew Canon 50-1000.2. Canon has the CN7x17 which is 17-120 and with 2K crop I can go to 240 when needed - what about adding an extender on that like a 2x or 1.4x and would you get the PL or EF mount? Also 10K lens than cabrio3. Canon also has the nice glass like the 30-300 for the same price (or better) and also 10K less than cabrio4. Then what about some cheaper but cinema zooms made by RED - I see these have good rental prices so would this be a good option if trying to manage budget as I have about 80-100 days of rentals on this project.5. A wildlife veteran filmmaker I know is using the Sigma 50-500 and I was thinking about the new 150-600 which I know seem like cheap glass but his stuff looks beautiful.  Sure there are comprimises but if you have a main camera with 1-2 Bcams and want options, having a few lenses gives you other kinds of options6. Then there are these Angenieux (my friend has a vintage25-250 but not sure that would be good) and the new Angenieux zooms are a bit cheaper than Canon and Cabrio but limited to 80mm (160mm in center crop) but with extender can go up a little higher. Too many options but always thinking about what is right for now and good investment for the future?  Or just rent best lens and that's that!

  • Timecode in the media browser - Sony F55 Xavc

    Working in of PP CC with footage from the Sony F55 (4k Xavc codec) and timecode is not available in the media browser. The only work aounrd is to import ALL of the footage in the project. Any ideas on how to see timecode in the media browser so as to avoid import of masive amounts of footage?

    That's where I'm trying to change them. It doesn't allow for anything other than "XDCAM-HD", which doesn't have any timecode columns (it does have duration, but that doesn't help me at all).  Even if I change it something to like "AVCHD", which does have Start Timecode,  it defaults right back to XDCAM-HD.

  • How do I find S Log 2 LUT (Sony F55) and apply to clips?

    I watched the tutorial on using LUTS in CC, hoever I cannot find any for the Sony F55 camera and Slog2 profile. Does it exist and if not then what is the usual procedure for applying a LUT in this case? My first experience with this process so forgive my ignorance.

    Check out the LUTs on the Sony Community site: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/NEW-3D-LUT-s-for-F55-and-F65/m-p/135617#U135617 Those should get you started.
    To apply the LUT, add a Lumitri effect, and then navigate to the LUT to select it. Click OK and you will be able to see the LUT working on your footage.

  • Cant import Sony F55 xacv proxy (sub) clips to FCPX

    Fcpx won't read the Proxy clips from the SUB folder created on the XDROOT folder from the Sony F55. So I can't import these clips. It is only the 4k clips in the CLIP folder that can be imported. Anybody know why?

  • Unable to perform update with Sony Bridge for Mac

    I have not been able to update my Xperia Z1 (model C6906) through Sony Bridge for Mac.
    While attempting this in SBM version 3.5 the following messages would appear:
    There was an issue with the update engine. Please contact technical support. (reason:failed to start local server)
    then:
    There was an issue with the update engine. Please contact technical support. (reason:failed to parse installer XML(code 11))
    SBM has now updated to version 3.6(3602) and still no luck. The software is able to download the update engine but then remains stuck in the initializing phase, talking to update engine.
    My phone is at build# 14.1.G.2.257. The proposed update seems minor, as the build # doesn't change but it would be great to have this issue resolved in time for kitkat 4.4
    There doesn't appear to be a problem with the phone as the staff at the Sony Store were able to perform my initial out of the box update with PC Companion.
    My Mac is running  OS10.9 and the java version is 1.6.0_65
    Any advice would be much appreciated

  • Sony Bridge for Mac doesn't work with my Sony Xperia J

    I have installed Sony Bridge for Mac version 3.7.1, but it won't connect to my Sony Xperia J which I have only had for 3 months.
    I get the error "Could not connect to your Xperia device. Please disconnect and reconnect it again. Restart the device if the problem persists". All the time.
    I have tried all of the suggestions in the error message. I have also tried reinstalling Sony Bridge for Mac, to no avail.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.9.2 on an iMac. I am also using the correct USB lead - the one supplied with the phone.
    The Mac system log shows this error:
    Apr  3 20:42:35 robins-imac.default Sony Ericsson Bridge for Mac[973]: BUG in libdispatch client: kevent[EVFILT_WRITE] delete: "No such file or directory" - 0x2
    I suspect that whoever wrote Sony Bridge for Mac did not try it on OS X 10.9.2.
    I am seriously thinking of getting rid of this phone and getting one that works properly with the Mac - ie, not a Sony phone. Sony always seem to have problems with supporting Macs, for some bizarre reason.

    I will ask the development crew about the system log error. Additionally, could you provide me with error logs to send them as well?
    Here’s how to get error logs from Sony Bridge for Mac: 
    1. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the "Phone" menu. Select "Clear logs" to remove all old logs and get a clean start
    2. Reproduce the problem you're having, whether it's connecting the phone, importing photos, doing backup...
    3. In BfM, hold the "alt" key down while selecting the ”Xperia” menu. Select "Export logs"
    4. On the computers desktop there should now be a file named "SonyBridgeForMacLogs_[date].zip
    5. PM that file to me or post the contents here

  • Sony Bridge for Mac PAINFULLY SLOW

    I'm trying to sync my music to my new Z1 compact.
    I'm getting write speeds of 0-100kb/s.
    At this rate it might take me a whole week to sync my music.
    Is this singular to me or are others having this problem?

    I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed with Bridge. We have had reports of this before, and are working on constantly improving the software.
    In order for me to help you, please answer the following questions:
    1. Are you using the latest version of Bridge?
    2. What's your OSX version, and how much RAM does your computer have?
    3. Could you provide me with error logs, which could help determine what's causing the problem?
    Here’s how to get error logs from Sony Bridge for Mac:

  • Working with Slow motion (240fps) Sony F55 Raw mxf files

    I'm working on a project that uses both 25p files and 240fps slow motion files from a Sony F55.
    The problem is that when I add the slow motion files to my file list everything gets media pending, even the normal 25p files. If I delete the the slow motion files from the list the normal 25p gets back to normal behaviour, withous Media Pending.
    It seems that Premiere Pro cannot work very good with Sony RAW 240fps files. Is that I known bug? Is there a way to fix it?

    I have downloaded a document wich contains hyperlinks. On Sony reader for PC it doesn't work, while it does on others ereaders I have tested.

    I find it odd that you are not able to open hyperlinks as well. I have tested and confirmed that clicking on a hyperlink from a book does launch my default web browser on my PC. Can you confirm the version of Reader for PC you are running and the book details for which book that is giving you an issue please.

    Hi Echo_steve Unfortunately, as I expected, you're not able to restore to another phone. However, there is one possible solution, but there is no guarantee it will work and it might mess things upp so you'll have to do it on your own risk. I'm afraid that's the best I can do for now. Here's how to work around the restore block. Again, use this with caution as there's no guarantee it will work. Also make sure Bridge isn't running when you attempt this:- Do a backup of the new phone
    - goto ~/Library/Application Support/Sony Ericsson Bridge for Mac/
    - Go to the "Backups" folder and find the backup sets
    - Try to locate the old backup folder and rename it to the name of the new backup.This can be quite tricky, as the folders are named things like "CB5A1JYXNQ". But basically, if the backup set of the old phone is named "ABCDEF01" and the backup set of the new phone is "ABCDEF02", it should be enough to remove (or rename) the new backup set and rename the old one to "ABCDEF02".
    Again, I'm sorry there's no easy fix. Please let me know if it works for you. Best Regards, David

    Hi , my name is Jomon Philipose . I am from Bangalore and a victim of poor workmanship and service  of Sony Ericsson C905A. It was not even 6 months that the camera , for which I bought the set showed it's true colours. "Open Lens Cover problem in Sony Ericsson phone". Yeah , just try and put that on Google and see the number of negative matched results for it !!!!!!. Guess should have read the reviews for Sony Ericsson before spending 12000 INR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.It's not only your hard earned money but the free frustration that you get for no fault of your own .. Taking it to the service centre is the only option where they tell you to repair it in 7 days but takes 2 weeks forcing you to buy a new phone if you do not have one. Forget all the re syncronisation and setting that you have to do about it, and think about the responses that you get from the Service Centre , in do not know what language. Caution : If you talk to them for more than hour it's hazardous to your spoken English .
    All you get to hear is the recorded tone of "Please wait for 48 hours " Even after you call them after 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
    No response to the Work Order complaint (SE311SS211175) what so ever . This is a crazy customer service !!!!!!! . I will definately never buy a Sony Ericsson no matter how good a phone reviews are  . Neither will let anyone whom I know buy it and put in best efforts to awaken them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

    Don't believe me ? , well you would have if you had heard the conversation with the Shrishti Services guys who tells me that neither " can they give the phone on time " or " Will they return it to me unrepaired!!!!!!". At one point of time I thought , the phone was Sony Ericsson's intellectual property!!!!.

    If you think you are lucky go ahead and buy it,maybe by this time you could have already bought it  coz God forbid something happens to it, you do not have a  good customer service to support it.  After getting my phone back , not surprisingly again for the 4 th time the camera stopped working . It's a faulty product altogether and I do not want to go through the pains again to go through them . They are supposed to check the set again within 90 days from the time , the repair was carried out. But you know what I have given up  on them as my work does not allow me to keep my phone away for a long time .
    It would be a real pain in the place you know where .  All my research for buying a good phone at competitive price went straight into the gutters .
    . I would rather buy a new phone than going through the same process again for the 4 th time. And that would not be a Sony Ericsson for sure.   • Cannot select iTunes videos for sync with Sony Bridge for Mac version 3.6

    I have a Sony xperia T.
    I am running Sony Bridge for Mac version 3.6 (the latest I think)
    I would like to sync a couple of movies to my phone so I can take them with me when travelling, but the itunes library movies are "greyed out" and I cannot select them to enable them to sync.
    I cannot see why.
    Also some of my music is the same - some albums are "greyed out" and cannot be selected.
    Anyone else seen this and worled out the solution ?
    if so - please advise !

    Which would be a better for wildlife and sport action Canon 70-200  mm is usm ii serie L f/2.8 or Canon 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6?

    On what camera? It makes a big difference depending upon whether you are using full frame or a crop camera.
    Also depends upon the particular sports and type of wildlife most commonly involved, how much reach you might need.  Outdoor, daytime sports vs indoor and nightime sports is another key factor.
    On a crop camera a 70-200 is generally a lot more usable than it is on full frame, for sports and wildlife. An f2.8 lens and 70-200 might be ideal for indoor sports even with a crop camera. It also might be plenty for large game that can be pretty closely approacted. But for small and more shy wildlife, sports on a  larger playing field, you'll more likely need the 100-400. But as an f4.5-5.6 lens that's going to be more of a daytime-only lens.
    The 100-400mm is unusual in that it's a push/pull zoom. This can be particularly fast to use and makes the lens popular among photograhers shooting fast moving subjects such as birds in flight and air shows.
    If you give serious consideration to the 70-200/2.8 IS II in combination with teleconverter EF 2X III, I'd suggest renting and trying them toghether first. The reason is that a stronger 2X teleconverter has more effect on image quality than a weaker TC. The specific combination of the 70-200 Mark II lens and the 2X Mark III TC is pretty darned good.... better than the combo earlier versions of each item.  But whether or not it's up to your expectastions is a judgment call only you can make. So it might be wise to rent before you buy, just to be sure. 
    If instead you start to take a hard look at the 100-400mm, once again you might want to rent it and give it a try. Some people really like the push/pull zoom design. Some don't. (I'm one of the latter...  but to be fair this is largely an old  prejudice from trying to use that type of zoom in the past, long before IS. I always found push-pull zooms hard to get a steady shot with.... But the 100-400's IS goes a long way toward solving that problem.)
    And those two really aren't your only choices.
    Personally I use a pair of crop cameras (7D), most of the time one fitted with a 70-200, and the other fitted with a 300/4 IS, sometimes in combination with an EF 1.4X II teleconverter. Or, when I don't need to be mobile and can set up a tripod, I'll use a 300/2.8 IS, both by itself and with EF 1.4X II or 2X II teleconverters.
    Another possibility is two lower cost lenses... such as a 70-200/4 IS in combination with a third party lens such as the Sigma 120-400 OS or 150-500 OS. Those lenses are considerably less expensive than the 70-200/2.8 II and the 100-400, respectively. You might be able to afford both and still find they meet your needs very well.
    I use the 70-200/4 IS, as well as a copy of the first version of the 70-200/2.8 IS, and they are excellent lenses too. No doubt about it, the 70-200/2.8 IS Mark II is top of the heap and exceptionally good... but rest assured those other 70-200s are no slouches.
    If using a full frame camera, for large field sports and more distant, smaller wildlife.... better start saving up. You're going to need one or two of the super telephotos, such as the new EF 200-400/4L IS 1.4X that I'm saving up for!  
    p.s. By the way, if not already doing so you might want to try Back Button Focusing. It's a very popular technique among sports/action and wildlife photographers. I've been using it for years for virtually everything I shoot, and can't imagine using any other method now.

    I'm trying to update my Xperia P to ICS and, since I've not received any notification, I'm using Sony Bridge for Mac (my phone is not firmware branded).
    So, i plug my phone at the mac, starting Bridge and wait for the download... until my phone turn off itself and Bridge advice me that no phone is connected. How can i solve?

    Unfortunately it's not possible to get back to Android 2.3 if you have updated to Android 4.0 I'm afraid.
    To be able to sort it out and get the phone back to the way it should be - now slow or "laggy" - I'd recommend you to try performing a repair of your phone's software first of all.
    Just follow the instruction above given by my colleague Samuel and you'll hopefully easily solve the issue. Fingers crossed!

  • Browse files on Xperia device - Sony Bridge for Mac

    is it just me, or is using the Sony bridge for mac's "Browse files on Xperia device" pretty useless?
    Sure you can see what files are on the device, but if you right click there are no options... you can't hit space bar to view pics on the device and even double clicking on a file does NOTHING! Isn't there something else I could rather use other than Sony Bridge for Mac to view my devices files?

    Not a Mac expert but with Windows based systems you can open the Computers connected devices page and then open the device to view files meaning Pc Companion is not needed
