SONY FX1 and the FCP

anyone using the sony FX1 and FCP5? im trying to get the best import settings. also, do i just export it as MPEG2 if im making a DVD for mass production?

hello ZJS,
i think i'll have to correct you here - iMovie doesn't do any encoding. Encoding is done by apps like QT or compressor (or iDVD, for that matter) and outputs a file with a different codec.
as i mentioned before, iMovie handles HDV differently than FCP because it uses the QT intermediate codec, so i think this is where your black bar comes from - anybody correct me please if i'm getting this wrong. i still recommend doing the following procedure:
1. capture from camera to FCP and edit
2. print to video from FCP to camera
3. capture from camera to iMovie
4. create DVD in iDVD and save as disc image
5. burn with toast
you said before that you filmed in HDV and that's what you wanted to get out of it, please note that by making a DVD you will get Mpeg2 video which isn't really the same thing anymore. I have read a couple of threads reporting that image quality is not really good on DVD's with HDV material made with iDVD, but can't really comment on it as i never tried
all right, keep us posted

  • Are Sony cameras and the latest Mac OS / video edit software friends???

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great joy that I tell you that very soon I will be leaving, forever, the pc world to join the mac family! However, before I make my purchase I have some important questions for everyone out there who is already an owner:
My primary use will be for editing video. I have a Sony DCR - SR85 HD camera and I am worried about compatability. Will the latest macbook/ imovie/ final cut express 4 (operating system and softwares) read and process the movie files from this camera type!?! Will I have to get a different camera!?! I thank you greatly for your response as these questions are impeding my purchasing confidence.
    Thanks,
    Justin

Hmm, checked out the camera and found the HD label to be leading one to think High Definition but it referes to Hard Drive as the camera is a hybrid type recording to drive or card.
As Tom suggests Mpeg 2 standard definition files are a no go with FCE.
Standard AVCHD cameras are directly compatible,  I use Panasonic but Sony is fine as well.

  • To Sony FX1 and FCP5 users. What is your HDV workflow?

After you edit captured HDV footage how do you export to a single file then re-import that file for "Print to Tape" without getting serious dropouts?

i edit captured hdv footage from 2 dif cams into one clip
export using current settings to a single file that i add motion graphics to in After Effect
import that file back into FCP5 and try to Print to Tape but i get alot of drop outs and pauses when going to tape.
wanted to know how you do it?

  • Problems with Sony NX3 AND Sony Z5 avi files

Very, very strange problem. I will try to give as much detail as possible so bear with me.
I currently edit with two different computers. One uses Premier 3 the other uses Premiere 6. I shoot with several different cameras, but for purposes of this discussion I will talk only about the Sony Z5 and the Sony NX3. I capture my footage on a CF card (Z5) or SD card (NX3)
All HD footage shoot with the Z5 and/or the NX 3 works fine on either system. However any SD footage that is over a certain length will not import into premiere 6 (if it's from the Z5) or the length of the footage will only be 2:37 (on footage from the NX3). However the SD footage from either camera will play perfectly on the system with Premiere 3.
Any ideas on what my problem with premiere 6 is?

I caputured footage from my ZU1 yesterday that encountered time code breaks. They should not have been there. My only thought is that the breaks occured when I shut the camera down and started recording later.
Maybe... I assumed it was user error... I was wondering if perhaps a setting in the camera was causing the breaks when the camera powers down.

Try creating a new user and see if the application runs in that user account.
If it works, then it is something in your user account (preferences, caches, login items) that is causing a conflict.
It it dies not, then you should remove the application using FCS Remover, and download a fresh copy from your purchases in the App Store.

  • Using HD 1080i60 shot with sony z1 and 24p shot with canon in a sequence.

is it possible to use two different kind of footage( one is HD 1080i60 shot with sony z1 and the other one is HD 24p shot with canon) in a sequence? if not what should I do?

Yes, it's possible. Make your sequence with the settings of the material you shot more of, and the other one will be rendered to those settings when you bring it in.
For a more consistent look between the two, you may want to look into this:

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

  • This new 1080p tv sets and my 1080i Sony camera-output from FCP

I use a Sony FX1. My best capture is at 1080i or 720p.
I've recently been recording at a higher shutter speed and am getting improved footage.
I note that FCP has an output option of 1080p - 30. Is this only half as good as the new monitors can show? If I eventually want to create highest quality for playback on 1080p-60 will I need an updated camera and will FCP have to offer 1080p-60?
    Since I've never viewed 1080p-60 is the - 30 vs - 60 a big issue?
Using the 1080p-30 makes for a much improved view than H264 720x480 or HDV 1080i any other settings up to this one. H264 is a GREAT file size saver but does not use near the bit rate of 1080p-30.
One other thing. When the new OS comes out with 64-bit processing, is FCP and DVDPro already ready. I have not found any specs on FCP 5.1.4 indicating it is 64-bit ready.

    ensure the following are set
View>Video Playback>Firewire Apple 720x480 (NTSC or PAL - whatever is appropriate)
    View>Audio Playback>Audio follows video
    View>External Video>All Frames
If this isn't what you are set to do, you won't be sending video out to your recorder.

  • Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

    Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
    thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • Sony DVDirect and FCP

I use a Sony DVDirect VRDVC20 to burn screening copies of shows for clients. It has composite, s-video, and FW video inputs. Normally I send FCP output to a converter box and use the s-video output from the converter box into the Sony unit. This works and the quality is fine but I'd like to use the FW input. The unit accepts a FW input from a DV camera, but when I use the FW output direct from FCP the unit doesn't recognize the signal. When I go into the FCP video ouput settings it shows "[missing]Apple FW NTSC." Sony says the unit is not supported by the MAC OS. How is the video signal carried by a FW cable from a camera different from the the FCP video signal coming out of the MAC via FW? There obviously is a difference between these signals. Is there a way around this, or is there a setting in FCP that I have wrong?

firewire is a bi directional communication protocol. If sony says it doesn't talk FCP it doesn't. There are a number of devices that do not play well with FCP.
I do not believe there are user controllable settings in FCP regarding Firewire other than
    1. Firewire or Firewire BASIC '
    2. Controllable or non-controllable devices.
Your recorder is a non-controllable device. Try that and see what happens.

  • How to import Sony Z1 and A1 tape based files to FCP X?

Apple support have today told me (eventually) that footage from the Sony HVR Z1 and A1 and the GoPro Hero 2 cameras are not suppported by FCP X, they suggest using a 3rd party convertor, this will add considerably to the time bringing data into the package.
How do others get over this issue as I am assuming that others are using Sony HVR & GoPro cameras as they are market leaders.

Who exactly at Apple support told you this? Z1 and A1 are HDV cameras and are covered by this note
Final Cut Pro X is compatible with most MiniDV tape-based camcorders using DV and HDV formats, which use a FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.LINK) cable to transfer video.
The GoPro media can be imported an optimized on import. The audio from the cameras is not suitable for FCP, but most people don't use audio from these cameras. If you need audio and video you can batch convert with Compressor or MPEG Streamclip.

  • HD Sony Camara's HDR-FX1 AND HDR-HC3 NOT RECOGNIZED BY IMOVIE HD 6

I have tried all the recommendations on the connection between the camara and the computer with ilinkl, but the only thing that I get is a message saying the following: "Something is wrong with the plugin above threshold". The program does not detects the camara at all.
I have the MacBook Pro but also I have Tried it with the G5. It also happens with Final Cut Pro.
Any help will be very appreciated

NickyCee posted this a while back regarding her HC3:
    [quote]
After reading this post and many other discussions on this subject, I contacted Sony. They were ZERO help eventually sending me to the Apple store for answers - why? I do not know. I tried ALL suggestions in this thread. No matter what I could not get my HC3 to import into my G5 Dual 2.7 through iMovie or through Final Cut Express HD.
Finally the solution: Bought a Belkin internal 6-pin firewire card and a new DV (i.Link) cable (card and cable come together - part # F5U501-APL). Popped card into free slot, pugged in and now it's perfect. If you're having problems, stop messing around - Go spend $40 and get a 3-port firewire card and a new DV cable. Problem solved.

    Perhaps that is the problem?

  • I am trying to hook my macbook pro to a sony bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. The same set up has worked with three other, though different televisions. Any thoughts?

I am trying to hook my MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia TV via DVI to HDMI cable and the TV will not recognize the signal. I have used the same setup with three other TV's, each a different brand with no problem. Any ideas?

Is the TV set to take input from the HDMI connection?
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your connections.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.
