Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR to MacBookPro with FinalCut

I've been using my HDV camera as a playback device to get 720p30 HDV captured into FinalCutPro 6. The firewire from the camera to the Mac works fine. Will the
Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR allow me to capture 720p30 HDV from tape to Final Cut via firewire? If not firewire, what kind of cabling do I need to get pictures and sound into FCP from the GV-HD700 deck?
Thanks!

The specs listed on B & H note that one cannot transfer HDV720p/30 via firewire, but the comments on the same site regarding the recorder in question seem to rebut this. I've since read a suggestion about defeating the down-convert option on the deck, so that FCP, which is expecting to capture HDV based on my capture settings, will recognize what's coming through the firewire. I'm wondering if I'll be able to control the deck through the capture window, or just start tape and capture now. Thoughts? Thanks very much!

  • Sony GV-HD700 HD Video Walkman

Sony's relatively new offering, the GV-HD700, looks like it might make a good feeder deck for editing HDV/DV. Has anyone had an opportunity to road test this unit? Thoughts/Comments?

Ron: My experience with previous generation DV walkmans is that they work perfectly as feeders, but the mechanism (which really is consumer grade) simply can't stand the wear. I have a ruined GVD-300 in my desk that broke a few times until it was damaged beyond repair. Just from normal use. DSR-11s DVCAM decks didn't exist at the time, but every unit I used since then seems to keep going like Duracell rabits. These things are designed for business/medical presentations, rather than being controlled remotely by a computer all day. When Sony puts a pro label on a deck, even if the features are similar, it simply is way more robust. And it may be less expensive in the long run.

  • Sony GV-HD700 issue

I'm having issues with FCP using the Sony GV-HD700 for video playback. I cannot get it to run as an HD playback device. DV seems to work ok, but the options for HDV are all grayed out.
    My sequence preset is: HDV-1080i60
    Capture preset is: HDV
Device Control Preset is: Sony HDV firewire
I'm trying to use a firewire connection. On the deck itself my settings look correct.
I've set the HDV/DV Sel to HDV. My i.link conv. is turned off, and my A/V-DV out setting is turned off.
I've tried handfuls of settings and have not had success yet.
    Any ideas?

    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire because it's Long GOP structure is too taxing on your processors to spare the system resources needed to drive an external monitor.
The best option you have is the Matrox MXO...$1000. This coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you color correction quality...but, it isn't compatible with COLOR yet. www.matrox.com
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well.
You can view HDV out firewire as DV...as stated in page 220 of the manual:
"For example, you can preview a 720p30 HDV sequence via an NTSC DV FireWire device
connected to an external monitor. The output signal is letterboxed and downconverted
to NTSC video. You can also use a third-party interface to view any format supported by
Final Cut Pro—as long as the frame rate of your clip or sequence matches the frame
rate of your current output device."
But I haven't a clue how to get that to work. Manual doesn't say as far as I can tell. THis is for external viewing only...not good for color correction.

    Hello,
I am still having problems capturing HDV from a Sony GV HD700.
It sees the deck, can capture some, but then crashes. Anybody have experience
with certain decks and cameras not able to capture with Final cut 7?
I am stumped. Settings are HDV.....1080I 60 ... on presents.

  • Audio sync problem with sony video walkman input

i purchased a sony video walkman to ingest mini dv into fce1, using a 1ghz g4 imac with os 10.3.9. 256mb of ram. i made the purchase to overcome the same sync problem i had when ingesting long clips directly from a canon xl-1.
i'm connected with firewire. audio is 16 bit (shot on an xl-1) and i've checked and rechecked the preferences and other relevant settings.
i'm buffaloed at this point: how can i capture longer clips without a loss of sync?
could the problem still be related to having shot the material on an xl-1? could it be related to only having 256mb of ram?

yes, i have...i've also deleted fce preferences files as well. i'm wondering if reinstalling the program will help this situation?

  • SONY GVD1000E MINIDV VIDEO WALKMAN and G5 imac

I was looking on the jigsaw sytems web site at the SONY GVD1000E MINIDV VIDEO WALKMAN and I saw that they say it is incompatable with a G5 imac
    Is this so?

    Neil,
    1) Your best bet is to get 5.1 if you do not have it yet. It is a paid crossgrade, but as long as you have the original install discs it is a simple process.
    2) The "e" at the end of your camera indicates that it is the PAL version I believe. Do you edit in PAL? or NTSC? Whichever you use just make sure to choose the proper easy setup.
    3) Since you have a G5, I would suggest using that as your video machine. You can get around the firewire situation in one of two ways. First, and best in my opinion, is to purchase a second internal SATA harddrive and install it in the spare bay, set this as your "Scratch Disk" and your off. Second, buy a PCI firewire card and install this in a spare PCI slot, then connect your firewire drive to this. Or, if you feel the need, do both.
    4) As for why iMovie works and FCP doesn't, the simple answer is the iMovie is a consumer program that has much lower tolerances than the PRO FCP. From what I understand, iMovie does not capture timecode and does not capture audio and video as separate files, among other things. To do these things there must be proper communication between the computer and camera.
    5) Another thought is that your camera may be set to downconvert the footage to SD on output. This might also explain why you got something in iMovie and not FCP. Check in the menu system for your cam and see if it is set to downconvert.

  • Sony GV-HD700 Output problems

I've been trying to Print to Video for days now. Does anyone have a definitive answer on this mystery? I can successfully capture material in both DV and HDV, though in HDV the frame size of my clips is still 720x480 even though I set it up for 1440x1080 in the presets, but I can't Print to Video in either of the formats.
    My deck settings are....
    HDV/DV SEL: HDV
    DV Rec Mode: SP
    Component: 1080i/480i
    i.LINK Conv: On
    TV Type: 4:3
    A/V to DV Out: On
My FCP Audio / Video Settings are....
    Seq. Preset: HDV-1080i60
    Capture Preset: HDV
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV FireWire
Video Playback: None ( but I can change without affecting ability to capture. )
Audio Playback: Default ( but I can change without affecting ability to capture. )
Under A/V Devices tab I have selected.....
Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video
    Video: HDV (1440x1080) 60i
    Audio: HDV
After trying several other combinations the system seems to take control of the deck, rolls tape, transcodes or conforms to HDV, transfers to deck or camera, but nothing actually records on the tape.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,

  • HELP NEEDED CAPTURE DV FOOTAGE WITH HDV VIDEO CAMERA

I'm trying to capture DV video footage I've done years ago with my Sony DCR-HC40E PAl into FCP version 6. with my new camera HDV video Sony HDR-HC7 1080.i/mini dv so I can capture it into FCP but it's jerky, An yone know the setting for both the HDv camera and FCP to get the footage perfect as the rginal video.
    Cheers

From the FCP menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DV-PAL > OK. (Use DV PAL Anamorphic if you shot wide screen).
Menu bar once more: Sequence > Settings > Set Sequence Preset > OK.
That camera should detect the DV format tape and playback with the correct settings automatically.
All you ned to do is connect it via FireWire and capture.
For everything else, here's the manual for that camera: http://www.docs.sony.com/release/HDRHC5.pdf

  • *** Turning the "conforming HDV video" render OFF

I had to print some HDV projects back to tape, so on the advice of another person here, changed some settings so that the "conforming HDV video" stage was done before deciding to print the sequence to tape.
I'm finished printing my projects to tape now, and when I'm not editing a new HDV project, each time I press option-R to render, it says "conforming HDV video". How do I turn this "off" so that it will just render out like it normally did in the past?
    Thanks in advance..........

Hi, can you tell me how you got the printing to video to work. I´ve tried now for few days to output HD material from my project back to my tape. I have a Sony HVR Z1U Camcorder. The sequence plays well on my computer and my camcorder even starts to record but there is no picture transmitted to the tape.
    Where is the problem?
    Thanks in advance

  • Sony GV-HD700 wont capture

No matter what combo of settings I use, I can not get Final Cut to capture HD footage off the Sony GV-HD700 deck. I have tried several coronations of setting on both the deck and FCP 6 and nothing works. Any ideas?

Yes on all three. I have set the capture preset to all the HDV settings I have, and have used the all the HDV firewire control settings, including the sony ones. It will control the deck, but it wont preview and when I hit capture now or set an in and out point, it wont capture. It says that there is no data. I have also unplugged the firewire and changed the iLink settings on the deck. Neither on or off work. I have also changed the HDV settings to Auto and HDV and nothing.

  • Best path for HDV video to Apple TV.

I use a Sony HDR-HC1 HDV to record videos and need to know the path to Apple TV that will provide the best quality. I’m showing these on a 50 inch Fujitsu 1080i Plasma. I edit the video in Imovie-HD.
Can someone tell me what the best settings are to export from iMovie-HD into Quicktime or iTunes. I understand that Apple TV doesn’t support 1080i, so I’m wondering what are the best export settings to use to achieve the highest quality video through Apple TV.
I used to have a Roku Picture bridge that displayed exported ts files beautifully, but it died.
Thanks for any and all advice.
    Ken

    you understand incorrectly.
    appletv supports 1080i.
but since 1080i is only 540 lines vert resolution,
you should probably output at 720p
    Okay, thanks for the correction.
Do you know if I can choose to export to 720p from iMovie-HD?

  • Managing hdv video

I'm pretty new to video editing and I just got my hands on a Sony HDR-HC1 HDV cam. I'm using FCE for my editing. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions/tips for capturing the HDV clips. When I've done this with standard DV, I use the capture window in FCE and log all of my clips that way (which then allows me to delete the cache when I'm done editing and recover the clips with "capture project" if I need to). When I go to capture with my HDV cam, FCE only lets me essentially do a "capture now". It won't even open the capture window. I don't mind FCE capturing the whole tape with "capture now" and seperating it into clips for me (which is what I'm currently doing with my HDV tapes) but there doesn't seem to be any way to recover these clips if I remove the cached files. Is there any way to recover these clips if I clear my cache? Is the timecode for the clips even stored in the project? If I do need to keep the clips, does anyone have any suggestions to dealing with this obviously huge amount of storage needed for the clips short of buying a new external hard drive deticated for each project? And finally, is this just a short coming of FCE and does FCP allow me to use the capture window for HDV? Any advice on the HDV capture process with FCE would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
Oh, I should mention I'm using the most recent version of Final Cut Express HD in case anyone wants to know what version.

Sorry, by "cached files" I refer to those in the "Capture Scratch" directory.
When you say FCP5 works with HDV material differently, does it support logging and recapturing (with "capture project") for HDV in the same way that FCEHD does with DV?
Also, does anyone have any tips to share with how they manage to keep all the captured clips? I wasn't keeping copies on my hard drive with regular DV because I could recapture, but now it looks like I will burn through drive space very fast. Is just buying more external hard drives the best option? Thanks for the advice!

  • Can I author hi def HDV video and surround digital audio by sending a file

Create a bl;ue ray HDV video and surround-digital audio
    Posted: Nov 2, 2006 10:43 PM
I have a MAC G5 dual processor, Final Cut Pro, DVDSP, and a home network connecting the MAC to an IBM PC with a Blue Ray Burner. You would think that wioth my Sony HDV camera, I could create HDV hi-def video material and a Dolby 5.1 or DTS audio track along with it and burn a Blue REay media and then be able to play it on a Sony Blue Ray player in my home theater.
Well, How do you do this? I have been wanting to create some of my own stuff and record like this so anyone with the equipment could view it.
    Please RSVP

I recently made a dual layer disk on one of our G5s without a dual layer burner by doing the final burn on a PC. I imagine you could do the same with blue ray.
Just edit the project and make your hi def DVD on the MAC using FCP and DVDSP. In DVDSP Build the project to a suitable folder on the hard disk. Copy the files to your PC and burn the disk as a data disk with the burner software.

  • Conforming HDV video takes ages!

i shot some footage in hd 50i on my sony Z1 captured it all seems great - did the editing all fine (its a 3 min sequence), but now when i render it within the FCP timeline it seems to taking ages to "conforming HDV video" is this normal?
I use a macpro 2x3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with graphics card

I hadn't seen that Michael so I appreciate the heads up.
This HD-Connect MP2 unit looks to be a far more cost effective solution than the previous contender... up to now, for bi-directional conversion, I think the Canopus ADVCHDM1 has been pretty much our only option, though I had conveniently overlooked that when making my last post !
consider my stance amended ... you only "have" to accept the conform if you don't have access to third party convertors ( and the necessary IO gear for your FCP workstation )

  • Which Sony Video Camera's will work with Final Cut

    Hi,
I'm getting *Final Cut* and can get +Sony Video Camera's+ at a discount, but like to know which +Sony Video Camera's+ will work with *Final Cut* or should most work without any problems?
    Thanks,
    Sal

You got to do better than that.
Any idea on the TYPE of sony video camera's available to you? They make quite a few.
I'd stay away from anything with a DVD in it... also HDV can be tricky too... but not undoable.
