Sony Handycam SX44 and Toshiba CAMILEO H30

Are they compatible with my macbook below are my specs. If not, what are comparable video cameras(under 202.00)?

Well, I personally would avoid both cameras. The SX44 records in mpeg2, a problem for Macs, and the Toshiba in AVI. You can transcode the video using workarounds I have found the best option is to do a lot of research, starting with Amazon.com, where at least one Mac owner of the Toshiba found the files unusable.
I have found that going to Apple and looking for their suggestions often helps. Here is a page with supported camcorders for iMovie 11, for instance. I suspect the list is pretty much the same for your iMovie 09.

  • Toshiba Camileo H30 importing

I have recently purchased the camileo h30.
I have taken some 1080p video recording.
I have windows vista home premium.
it shows the video fine on the media player.
my issue is when i go to import the video into a
windows movie maker project, the video shows up
as only audio, and there isn't even any sound.
    Can anyone help me?

    Hello D.Feldman,
have you tried it with the movie maker of the attached software, also?
I think there are no problems with them.
Maybe the Windows movie maker misses some specific codecs?
Another idea is, to record in different resolutions (720p, WVGA, VGA in PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz) and try it again.

  • Sony handycam hard drive (toshiba 1.8 60G MK80316) hooked up with usb adapter

Handycam won't power up. Removed hard drive and hooked it up with a usb adapter to a laptop. Drive not shown in my computer. I found drivers for the adapter and toshiba hard drive but hard drive is not found.

    Hi newbie-515,
Unfortunately, the failure code for the hard drive is fortelling you of what is to come. In my opinion I would address the solution by the following specific actions:
1: Back up any data that can be accessed from the original drive, onto an external hard drive. To minimize the risk of losing any information.
2: Replace the failing hard drive, before it gets to the point of complete failure. This may also prevent loss of personal data.
and 3: Decide whether you want to upgrade/restore Microsoft Windows 7 onto the pc. That particular pc has current drivers available online at HP Support for the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.
Once this has been completed, then you can recover any personal data that was backed up to the external hard drive, onto the newly installed hard drive.

  • Unable to capture "Sony Handycam" to iMac

I bought Sony Handycam 2007 and worked on PC windows but this year I bought a new iMac computer but when I captured the video to iMac from the Sony Handycam and it won't open or work.... iMac said that I need to download software called MPEG or MPEG2, so umm do I need to buy a software or download free from internet??  Or do I need to buy new programe called "OS X Lions"  I'm new with iMac and patient to learn everything on iMac.

If the Vista install was a standard installation, Vista should recognize the camera automatically and install the correct drivers. Nothing you need to do. Make sure that you connect the firewire cable first between the camera and the on-board firewire connector. Do not try to connect it to the ATI card. Once the cable is connected, turn on the power on the camera and set it to VCR. Vista will then install the necessary drivers automatically and if they have been installed previously, show the autoplay box. Make sure that the menu in the camera is correctly setup to use the iLink connection and the format you shot in, so either DV or HDV. Consult the Sony manual for that. If the does not work, try a different cable first.

  • My ipad does not appear in itunes. I am OS 10.6, itunes is up to date, I have restarted computer and ipad and switched usb sockets. Dont know if its related, but I can no longer see my sony handycam in imovies too.

My brand new iPad 2 does not appear in iTunes. I am OS 10.6, iTunes is up to date, I have restarted computer and iPad and switched usb sockets. Don't know if its related, but I can no longer see my Sony Handycam in iMovies too.

What content are you wanting to copy of the iPad ? You should be able to copy off anything that you've purchased from Apple (films, music, ibooks, apps etc) by connecting the iPad to your computer's iTunes and doing File > Transfer Purchases. If you want to copy off music copied from your own CDs or purchased from other sites then you will need to find a program for your computer that can copy them off – iTunes won't copy them off.
For photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit or saved from emails/websites then you should be able to copy them off via the Windows camera wizard.
For photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.
Content in third-party apps (documents and files etc) then how you copy that content off will depend upon what the apps that they are in support e.g.either via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc.

Hard Drive:  The Hard Drive is on my camera (Sony Handycam)
Just needed some info on what is going on with your particular system.
Knowing the exact camera model will also assist us.
If this camera is standard AVCHD you should be able to connect with USB to Mac with FCE open and use Log and Transfer without all the fiddling around converting etc.
What FCE does during ingest is convert files to AIC. (Apple Intermediate Codec)
FCE cannot read the individual files in the BDMV folder, that's why all the converting is required when you use that method.
BTW: regards formatting drives/cards/memory on cameras; it is wise to use the actual device to format rather than a computer. This is a prime cause of read/write goof ups with solid state media. This applies to still or video cameras.
Keeping the COMPLETE card/memory structure in tact is vital for successful transfers.

  • Sony Handycam and MacBook Pro via Firewire 800

    Hi there,
I'm trying to connect my Sony Handycam (HC30E) to my MacBook Pro via the Firewire 800 port, but it simply won't register.
I bought a cable online that goes from my Sony (iLink) to the Firewire 800 port, so connecivity should be sound - but nothing at all is registering on the Mac.
I've updated all apps and Snow Leopard to the latest builds. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers!

    On paper, NO.
800 is back compatible with 400 and it should work fine.
On the forums a few users have ended up in your situation.
The common denominator is 800 ports on newer Macs.
Still don't know for sure what the trouble really is.
I suspect dodgey cables not pinned out properly.
If your cable is at the budget end of the market I'd suggest trying one at the quality end. Shielded and OFC style.
If the System Profiler can't see the camera then nothing else matters until it does.

  • IMovie 11 and quality loss with Sony Handycam DCR-SX33e

    Hi folks,
I have a Sony Handycam DCR-SX33e (good one!) and iMovie '11 recognizes it, it's able to import movies directly from the cam, creates events, etc... BUT the quality of the movies within iMovie environment is very very poor (i.e. pixels big like a house!) BUT if I look at the movies using QT (from iMovie events, "reveal in Finder" on a movie), the quality is perfect.
Still, if I make a project and finalize it, the exported movies are horribles.
I notice that the cam works with a DV-PAL resolution (720x576), but iMovie works with wide resolutions.
How can I work with iMovie without losing quality on my movies? Can QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X help?
    Thank you!
    Bye

    Geriatra,
Don't judge the imported footage in iMovie11 on the clip area and the monitor area. They are not a true representation of the finalized project. What's the best way to judge if the footage is imported properly is to look at the actual footage itself by clicking the clip and then select reveal in finder. Play the footage and see if it matches the original. If you do not want iMovie to optimize the footage, you can deselect this feature and it will simply either copy or move your original footage.
Personally, I don't know if iMovie 6HD helps because your Mac still needs to read MPEG-2 properly which you said are not having any success. Over here on my Macbook, I have no problems working with MPEG-2 converted files and with iMovie 11. Quality is superb. Albeit, I converted those MPEG-2 files using my faster Quad Core Vista 64 machine and posted them later on my RAID network server before being made available for the Mac.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMovie and Sony handycam DCR-HC20

I have a Sony handycam DCR-HC20, it records onto miniDV. I hook it up with a firewire cable to my computer to import video AND after uploading video onto iMovie for five minutes or less it crashes. I have tried other computers and the same problems occur. The camera worked fine with my last computer. I've been to the Apple Store and I forgot my camera so they couldn't help me.
Is my camera model just outdated?

    Welcome to discussions!
When you start up iMovie, and the first dialog box appears that gives you the option to create a new movie, etc. Underneath that is a drop-down arrow named Video format. Click on that and choose HDV 1080i, then see if it imports.

  • IMac G5 (10.3.9) and Sony Handycam (w/ Hard Drive)

I am trying to purchase a camcorder and do not know which one to get. Sony tells me that none of their dvd or hard drive camcorders are compatible with Mac and would need a third-party software for it to work, however, a friend of mine has an older Sony Handycam (with tapes) and says it works perfectly with iMove and has never had to load any additional software. Does anyone know if the Sony Handycam (hard drive) will work without using pixela software? Or can anyone give me a good camcorder recommendation ... I know that Canon has some models that are compatible with Mac but I don't know which one to buy. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Any camcorder that records on media other than miniDV tape will not interface with the mac in a way that allows you to download the file to edit. That is why the Sony (or any other camcorder) the records on DVD disks don't work. As for brands and recommendations, Sony miniDV tape cameras come highly recommended although other brands also have their fans. You should look at any reputable brand and decide based on $$$ and your personal preference according to needs. But, you need to make sure it records on miniDV tape.
A couple of other notes: The camera needs to have a FireWire interface. And some Canon cameras will only connect via FireWire if no other FireWire devices are connected to your Mac.
Also, you might want to switch your inquiries on this matter to the forums on iMovie and iDVD. Lots of respondents there that have far more expertise than me.

  • I have iMovie 09 and have successfully used an older Sony Handycam to directly capture and record. Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized in iMovie09. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

    Hi jcm2656,
iMovie ’09 does not support the Sony HDr-PJ230 camcorder. See this article for a list of cameras supported for that version of iMovie -
    iMovie '09: Camcorder Support
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290#1
iMovie ’11 however, does support it. See this article -
Apple - iLife '11 Help - iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
Note that iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-60p from this Camcorder.

  • Saving Video from a Sony Handycam HDD - I'm stuck in iMovie ****!

We foolishly bought a Sony Handycam HDD video camera last year, thinking we could save our movies to DVD using the computer.
I can do it using the laptop we got my daughter for Christmas, but this isn't really feasible. My G4 has iMovie 3.0.3. and even though I recently upgraded to a 2Ghz processor, I still can't install the iMovie I bought with iLife '08 2 years ago.
I need to be able to save files from my Sony handycam to my computer and burn DVDs. Or even if I could just burn them without saving, that would be fine.
I have heard that I need StreamClip from Apple and I see that I need to buy Apple MPEG-2 converter first and then I see in the feedback category for that product, everyone who gave it bad marks was trying to do what I'm trying to do. Then I read somebody recommended Quicktime Pro...
    I'm completely confused..and frustrated!!!!
Is there a version of iMovie that will work for me even though I just have a plain old 2Ghz processor?
Would Quicktime Pro or some other software do it for me? I don't mind paying $30 for some software that I'm only going to use for saving movies from camera to DVD, but I'd rather upgrade iMovie if that was possible.
    thank you.
(I'll come in off the ledge now...)

Hey. This is a really good question because I too have run into video problems with mine. After a couple of years I couldn't stand it anymore so I sprung for a MacBook Pro for myself this past Christmas. When I say video problems I mean I can't watch a DVD, a video on the net, etc. It's a pain.
But I still haven't given up on it. Currently it's just used for storage. Did that processor upgrade make any difference for you? I've been looking into that upgrade along with an upgrade to Leopard on the Quicksilver to see if it can handle the video.
We bought a Panasonic video recorder and have a G5 (pardon me but I don't know the processor speed). Even that computer wouldn't recognize the video files stored on the recorder and refused to import them. I called Panasonic and they explained I needed iLife '09. (Currently on the G5 there is '08 and it is running Tiger.)
What you might want to do is a couple of simple upgrades. First the OS to Leopard and then upgrade your iLife to '09. I can say that the camcorder works like it should with iMovie '09 just like the rep at Panasonic said it would.
    Hope this helps.
    Frank
