Sony HDD Handycam...

Please help...I bought the very cool hard drive Sony video camera, but it is soooo NOT compatible with my Mac. I downloaded the Quicktime addition to be able to view MPEG 2 files. I can actually see the video clips that I transfered to my Mac, but not hear them. No audio. When I go into the A/V controls menu, the volume controls are shaded.....
I will do ANYTHING, purchase ANY software etc. to make this work...please help!

Since Kirk told him/her July 25th what to do, I'd suggest doing that.
To the OP: (long gone no doubt) Buy the MPEG-2 Apple playback component, and MPEG Streamclip (free) open the clips and export to DV and use DV clips if you want edit the video.
$30 for the MPEG-2 and the rest is gratis. MPEG Streamclip is fine with Dolby 5.1 audio and will export to DV with a proper (audible) audio codec .
If you want MPEG-4 for say iPod or Apple TV you can edit , e.g. clip out the junk and export right to MPEG-4 from Streamclip as well. You need the MPEG-2 component since MPEG-2 is licensed and Streamclip needs it to decode the original.
Note it is not the jazziest MPEG player but it will just play stuff back for you too. Since the quality of MPEG-4 is so good, I'd convert to MPEG-4 to make smaller files and watch those.
If you want to make new DVD's from the HDD then Toast 8 Titanium will use the Sony clips right in Toast (no editing the junk though) and then will author a new DVD in practically no time. Better to open in Streamclip, edit, save as MPEG (a new file will be born), then use those clips in Toast.
Just because Final Cut Pro at ANY price might have worked it was not practical advice at all. $30 is a bit less than $1000.

  • Sony HDD Handycam fixed

Software Update fixed my Sony HDD DCR-SR42 connection problems. I spent hours reading posts and trying different suggestions but could not get iMovie to see my Sony DCR-SR42. Then noticed a new update for iMovie (7.1.1). Downloaded and installed it and the camera connected straight away.... I'm still annoyed it did not work before and it seems lots of users are having trouble with Sony Handycams but glad to get it going.
Now I just have to work out how to use iMovie 08!

MPEG-2 formats require additional software to play via QuickTime Player 7. Lion (10.7) includes its own version.

The free VLC player can play MPEG-2 formats without the additional software.

  • Can Final Cut Express read MPEG-2 format from a Sony HDD Handycam?

I have just recently switched from PC to Mac and generally I couldn't be happier, however I recently bought the latest Sony Hard Disk Drive Handycam and it records to the HDD in MPEG-2 format. VLC will play the files but I am after software that will alow me do do some basic editing and burning to DVD. I don't want to spent the AUD$2000 on DVD Studio and was wondering if anyone knows whether Final Cut will do the job for me?

I have also switched from PC to Mac.
Generally the MPEG-2 format is a poor choice to edit in independently if you have PC or a Mac.
If you want to put MPEG-2 files a DVD you can use the program "Toast".
It will accept the MPEG files as source files when you create a DVD, but you can not do any editing.
Another option is to convert the MPEG files to AVI by using a conversion program. Search for one on the internet.

  • When I plug in my sony hdd handycam to my mac it comes up on the desktop but will not appear in iMovies. Therefore I cannot import the video I want.

It is very frustrating. It will not come up as an option in the 'import video' window. I can only import video that is recorded from the 'in built' camera on my computer. Any one know how I can overcome this?? I would really appreciate any help.

it takes too long... and the computer (macbook air) gets very hot when I do that. it worked 2 weeks when i tried it but as it was new then, i wasn't paying attention at how or what I did to get it. So I know the camcorder is compatible etc. And I don't think I changed settings either. It is very strange. Thanks for the reply though.

  • Sony HDD Handycam video editing in Premiere Pro CS3

Is PPCS3 Software compatible with MPEG2 Camcorder recordings?

Based on reading a LOT of problem reports, importing files from a DVD or hard drive camcorder or other MPEG device (including digital STILL cameras that create MJPEG files) or trying to edit divx, or Ripping DVD files rarely results in success in Premiere... do not be fooled by movie industry advertising into thinking that "DVD Quality Video" is suitable for EDITING... it is not... a DVD is designed to be for PLAYBACK only... and that includes trying to edit a Standard Def MPEG or VOB file!
You should also use WAV sound files, not the compressed MP3 format
The only SD (Standard Def) files that Premiere really likes are DV AVI type 2 (be sure you have type 2 and not DV AVI type 1 files)
HD (High Definition) files are a completely different issue... I don't use HD, so can't say anything about editing those files
Go to my notes page http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM
Click the internal link for editing compressed files... read, there are some ideas & links there, including some links to other programs that have been mentioned in the Premiere forum as being better suited to editing MPG files... if you want to edit a divx file, start at http://www.divx.com/
If you only have DVD type files, you should convert to DV AVI type 2 or use different software... go to the VideoHelp link in my notes and look for a program to convert... but do be aware that converting from a HIGHLY compressed viewing format back to an editing format is going to cause a drop in quality
    PS -
To work with AC3 sound files in Premiere CS3, copy the ad2ac3dec.dll file from the Encore CS3 directory into the Premiere directory
For a Firewire DV Camera - look at Panasonic PV-GS320 or GS500 (Note that I have not used either, but they have good reviews)

  • Mac and Sony HDD

I have purchased a MacBook Pro this year and whomn a Sony HDD HandyCam DCR-SR100. The issue is that I am still not able to get the audio track on my Mac.
After reading few article on this subject I did the following :
Intalled QuickTime Playe 7 for Mac
Purchased Installed MPEG - 2 Playback Component
Purchased (not received yet) QuickTime Pro
    Intalled Flip4Mac WMV from Windows
Upgrade to WMV Studio Pro HD
Instaled Windows Media for Mac OS X 9
    Purchased iLife to have iMovie
Have triger ALL reading option within Quicktime in the advanced tab
Well after all this and expense, it still not work.
When I read my file on a PC, they are in a Windows Media Player version and work GREAT. But as soon as I plug my external hard driv in my Mac, they show as an MPG format. The video is OK, but simply no sound.
What he **** I am suposed to do...
Please don’t tell me to change my Cam, if we sent Armstrong to the moon in 1969, we sure must be to solve this issue in 2008.

Sounds like that cam produces an audio file processed with a non-supported codec. Not too hopeful about getting it to work.....maybe contact Sony and see if they have info that could help.

  • Capturing audio as well as video with a sony AVCHD handycam

    Capturing from card inquiry.
I am new to CS6. I have a sony HD handycam model HDR XR350VE. I am trying to import my footage from it into CS6 but the audio is not being imported. I have read the instructions (3 different versions of the instructions!) and realise that I need to import all the BDMV files from the camera – stream, playlist and clip info files, and not just the MTS files.
It is made more confusing as my second camera - a sony HXR70p is importing perfectly (all the audio files as well as video) without a problem, and to make it even more confusing, the 350 camera works perfectly  (imports audio and video fine) with premiere elements, so the problem is not with the camera.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

I am having trouble transfering/downloading videos from my Sony HDD DCR-SR40 camcorder to my Macbook Pro,How do I get them to transfer?
Since you did not indicate the nature of your problems, I can only make a couple of generalized comments. 1) Most people import/capture DCR-SR40/60/80 "muxed" MPEG-2 content using iMovie ('08, '09, or '11). This workflow converts the files to QT edit-compatible formats (all I-frame M2V video with PCM audio) that is compatible with both QT 7 and QT X applications. 2) If you are already trying to use this workflow and are having problems getting the iMovie application to recognize the media/camcorder, recommend you change the order of connecting camcorder, powering-up camcorder, and booting the iMovie app.

  • Apple compatibility with Sony HDD Video

I'm looking for video editing software to use on my Mac with a Sony HDD camcorder. (I want to transfer the video from the Sony Hard Drive to a DVD.) Can anyone help??

Since this forum is for troubleshooting compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows, you should probably post your question in the Final Cut Pro/Express or the iMovie forums, as if anyone has used the camcorder you'll most likely find them there.

  • I have a sony hdd camcorder, how can i get the videos from it to my macpro?

I have a sony hdd camcorder, how can I get the viedos from the camcorder to the macpro?

If you have iMovie it can import video from most camcorders, but not all.   It comes with every Mac Pro.    If you need to restore it from the original installer discs, these are the directions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2604
Typically iMovie can import if you connect via IEEE 1394 or USB.   IEEE 1394 comes in three flavors:
4 pin (typical for many camcorders), 6 pin (known as bus powered Firewire 400), 9 pin (known as Firewire 800 or 1394b).   Cables exist to connect each type of Firewire to each other.  Locate your Camcorder directions on Sony's website to determine what pinout exists if you don't have the manual.
Double check on Sony's website there isn't a firmware update for compatibility with your operating system.
Push comes to shove, you may have to install Windows on your Mac to connect the Camcorder.

I've got a sony dvd handycam (dcr-dvd602e) and want to get the video into imovie. Problem is that it records to mini dvd ( wont work in macbook) it doesnt have a firewire connection, and it records to mpeg2. Did a course on imovies with a jvc camcorder and was sweet. ant ideas on what i need to do ( or do I buy a new camcorder ( got the sony because of its cheapish waterproof housing)

I've got a sony dvd handycam (dcr-dvd602e) and want to get the video into imovie.
If tech specs data I looked at are correct, this is an analog only playback unit -- i.e., not only no FireWire connector but no USB either. If so, then you would need another device to act as an analog to digital converter for you. This could be in the form of a dedicated external DAC (Digital-Analog Converter) or another device such as a camcorder or TV tuner with a "Pass Through" option to convert your analog signals to digital and pass them through to your MacBook. If you are lucky, you might have a friend who could loan you such a device (as Winston frequently puts it, for the price of a few pints of your favorite brew).

  • Sony HDD & iMovie HD

I recently bought a Sony Handycam DCR-Sr45 HDD Camera to start making some home movies. When i try to upload my clips to iMovie HD, there's no sound. The clips uploads nice and clean but there's no sound at all. i even try from my regular photo camera and same thing. Can anyone help

Hi JayLou - your problem is that the video was recorded in MPEG2 format, which is incompatible with iMovie. iMovie needs DV formatted material, so yours will have to be converted. You will need:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    And look here:
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/%7Eshmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#edit_convertMPEG
Note that MPEG is a presentation format (e.g. DVD uses it) rather than an editing format, as not all frames are retained.
