Sony HDR-FX7 import problem

I just got a new Sony HDR-FX7 and when I tyy to import it tells me there is no camera attached. I have been on the phone with Sony for over two hours and they have no idea. I have tried in FCP and imovie with no luck in either program. Everything works fine with my other cameras and other devices. Anybody have this problem or any suggestions on what to do.
Thanks

Hey Photos341,
I am having problems with FX7. I got it a few days ago and I can't capture footage from the tape. I'm able to see the tape BUT I can't capture in HD. Here is my thread, I have not received any solid advice from anyone as to how to solve this. I was at the apple store today and was told that sony was not quite compatable with FCP, but there is a work around and some sort of plug-in is required to get it going.

  • Sony HDR FX7 doesn't work with Final Cut 5.1 Help

    Hi there.
I'm looking for some help. I"ve purchased the Sony HDR FX 7 today and took a few shots with it. I've connected the camera to my G5 and was tryingt to capture the movies I've recorded. Nothing seems to work.
Can someone please give me some help. I'm lookin for some very basic info on how to connect the camera and how to set it up with FCP. I am going to my one to one lesson but it's only on Friday next week. So I am hoping that I can learn some basics with you folks before I spend 1 week in vain.
Is there a link or some sort of study material on how to properly connect/set up/download and /or capture the video from this camcorder.
I'm really hoping that I could find something useful to get this process going. Right now I'm stuck, I can't capture the video. It tells me something about the timecode is out of range. When I try to capture now it says that the camera is not connected. But I see the video playing.
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Z1user Thank you for your reply and I hope you and your wife have fun.
I was supposed to have fun too and the FX7 is my wifes present for my birthday (today) but after I've played with it for a while and ran into all kinds of problems, I have fun no more.
Oh well, here are the details.
I have Final Cut Pro 5.1
The camera is Sony HDR FX7
I've connected it thru Firewire 400 on the back of my G5.
If you look below and see the specs, the G5 should have no promlems capturing video.
While I was capturing the video (I followed all the steps you've recommended me) I could see on the capture screen that here an there a green line would cross the film. You know the type of lines you'd get in the old movie? Yeah, just the same. I've captured all 5 sigments I had on the miniDV and when I tried to play (I went to file-import-file, I've selected the captured clip from my internal HD where the FCP put the files). The file opened in browser. And then it open in preview window of FCP (sorry I'm very new to FCP so I may be using wrong terms). At this point the clip that is 1 minute long would play for 2-4 second and end there. The quality of it was also very, very put (and I filed it at HD 1080i, may be even 24p (not sure about 24p as I have not studied the camera well to know if I need to turn it on or it's on by defalt). So, the quality was really poor. It was the case with all 5 clips I've captured from FX7. All of them 2-4 sec. long and very poor quality.
If anyone is readying this, could you please give me some ideas where to go with this.
    Thank you

  • FCP X transcoding Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i) to NTSC 720 x 480. Results are not pretty.

Help, please? I shot some interview footage for my student documentary film with a Sony HDR-FX7 (1080i). FCP X transcodes it to NTSC 720 x 480 on import and it looks awful. Have now learned the difference between interlaced and progressive!. The film project has 1080p footage as well and won't deinterlace in Compressor or JES. Not sure what to do: can't reshoot. I've spent hours on Google and YouTube and can't find a solution or a viable workaround. Would welcome your help; thanks!

I don't know what you're doing but there is no way FCP imports that media to 720x480, unless the camera is set to downconvert on output. iLink has to be switched off.

  • Capture HD video in Final Cut Express with a Sony HDR-FX7

When try to capture a video from my new Sony HDR-FX7 using the HD Format Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 the preview screen never shows the video being captured. In fact the video is never captured. Any suggestions to how set the 'Easy Setup'? When I try to capture with NTSC format the software keeps looking for a timecode that it will never find thus stops within a minute of starting. I would love to capture some video from my new Sony HDR-FX7 but not having much luck tonight. Have any helpful hints?

First, trash your preferences. Setting different incorrect settings and opening the capture window is a good way to corrupt the prefs files. HDV AIV 1080i60 is the only one to use if the camera is correctly set to output HDV.
Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media (you really did shoot HDV?), and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime are you using?

  • Sony HDR-HC1 import fix

I have a G5 tower (dual 2ghz) and had difficulty importing to iMovie 6 from my Sony HDR-HC1. Like many folks have identified in other posts, I could get iMovie to recogognize the camera and operate the transport but could not import any video or audio (click on import button and still got the same blue screen with no video/audio imported). I tried the G5 front firewire connector and the back firewire connectors... same thing. I tried connecting to a hub connected to the back firewire connector... no luck, same thing. I solved the problem by connecting via an external firewire drive (other folks have also identified this as a fix, but it's deep in the post). The drive is connected directly to a back firewire connector. I then connected the camera to the other FW port on the drive, turned on the drive, and everything worked just fine. No problem importing. I spent hours working on this and can't believe this is the fix...... but it works everytime. If Apple is watching this board, there has to be some FW glitch in the tower G5's. I hope this post can save someone some time. Th FW external drive enclosure I am using is just a "metal gear box" from Meritline. I suspect this will also help out HDR-HC3 camera users also.

Thanks ..and welcome to iMovie Discussions.
This may not work for Canon camcorders - which like to have the FireWire circuit to themselves, and dislike having a FireWire drive connected - but it works with my HC-1.

  • Problems importing from sony HDR FX7

    hi forum.
i'm having problems importing audio from my camera into i-movie.
during import there is no sound coming from my computer, but there is sound coming from my camera. after import when i play back the clip i just imported, the sound is morphed. its like the pitch has been turned down in the audio file, except no effect has been done on it.
if anyone out there has a similar problem, or a soulution please let me know as i am ready to throw my mac out the window!
    john lawlor

OK i think i get what you are saying but....
will the cound correct itself while it in in imovie. in other words will i be able to edit and listen to the audio as it is supposed to be?
what concerns me it that after i noticed this probem, i tried exporting it as a quicktime file, thinking that the wound would be OK, but after it finished exporting, the quicktime file was exactly the same. the sound was morpehd on it also.
could it be the settings on my camera?

  • HDR photo importing problem

I create HDR photos in photmatix pro, I save the images as jpg or tif. I Import the jpg or tif to Iphoto then delete original images as they show in the Iphoto library. Iphoto will not open the imported image, I can click on the thumbnail image but the alert says original image can't be found. What is the problem? Seems ok when I import raw files directly to Iphoto, just when I made an HDR image.

I can click on the thumbnail image but the alert says original image can't be found.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Sony DCR-HC96 import problems

I'm having problem trying to import my movies to iMovie 08 from my Sony DCR-HC96.
I connect the camcorder to its dock, connect the power cable and the Firewire cable (i-link), switch on and fired up iMovie 08. I press the import button but it just tells me that no camera is connected.
I have replaced the Firewire cable but it still does not help.
Can anyone suggest any further action?
Interestingly it has become harder and harder to import my movies from the camcorder and at one point I had to hold the cable in a certain way to get an import option - which leads me to beleive that the dock is at fault...but at £70 for a replacement from Honk Kong I think I'd be better off buying a new camcorder!
Any suggestions what maybe wrong/new camcorder that will work with a Mac!

    iMovie 7 not iMovie 8

  • Is the Sony HDR-FX7 HDV Camera compatible with Final Cut Pro 5 or 6?

Has anyone gotten this to work correctly. I have read in a few forums that the camera is not supported by FCP and I checked on the compatibility list and it is not there. iMovie sees this camera and can capture from it.
I can not get FCP 6 to recognize the camera. I set device control to Sony HDV and I am only able to capture using the Intermediate Codec. When I switch to the HDV codec it only will record for a second then fail. Although I can capture with some limitations I still can't get FCP to recognize the camera and therefore video from the timeline won't playback on the camera.
I really don't want to have to buy a hdmi capture card or buy a HDV deck to get this to work. If anyone knows any workarounds it would be greatly appreciated.
If there are none any suggestions on a cheap compatible hdv deck or camera to get footage in and out would be great.
    Thanks.

I have never had a problem with my internal boot drive either capturing DV footage and since HDV shares the same data rate I didn't think it would be an issue.
Then you are lucky my friend. If you wish to keep tempting fate that is your choice. I am simply suggesting that you follow the suggested setup so that you could eliminate a possible problem.
I do think there are compatibility issues.
This may be the case. Have you used an easy setup that matches your cameras settings and then changed control to firewire basic as I suggested earlier?
I have manually set up the capture settings and it will only work to the intermediate codec.
Manually settings are not always the best method. Try an easy setup as I suggested earlier.
I have narrowed it down to 2 things, either it's a Final Cut 6 issue on an Intel Mac, or it's just not compatible (Apple does not list it in it's Compatible Hardware List).
What I am trying to do is to narrow it down further. I have given you suggestions but it does not appear that you have tried them. If you try these we can continue to eliminate until you have an answer.
Please post back when you have tried my previous suggestions.

  • Sony DCR-HC37E Import Problems

I'm trying to import an hours' worth of footage from my Sony DCR-HC27E into iMovie 6.0.3. However, when I try to import iMovie will only capture 2:02 minute clips meaning I can't leave it to import.
The only reason I can think of why this is happening is that I'm importing all files to an 80GB USB1.1 external which can't be written to at the same speed as the video which is coming in from Firewire.
I'm having exactly the same issue with FCE3.5 HD too.
    Any help?

  • USP Sony DVD Camcorder Importing problem

Reading your messages, makes me feel that I should go out and get myself a HD Camcorder.
Right now however I have a USB version and I just cannot get it to handshake with Movie HD 6.
I appear to be following all the rules, but I cannot get passed the system thinking its DVD Play that I am after.
DVD Player takes the whole screen, plays the Camcorder DVD perfectly, but because the software takes the whole screen I am locked out from getting to any functions.
Is there another version of iMovie that I should be using?
    Thanks for any response.
    John

iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders
no support via usb, no support of DVDcorders... sorry to say.. :-/
Reading your messages, makes me feel that I should go out and get myself a HD Camcorder.
if you want to use the iApps, as they are intended for, you should buy a miniDV camcorder, standard or Hidef (=which needs a powerful Mac...)...
    besides:
the DVDplayer app is a ... ehm, player app, no converter for DVD content to iM... and making the screen smaller: while the dvd plays, hit -1 or -0 to make the player window smaller...

  • Boss wants to get Sony HDR-FX7 - is it a good camera with FCE HD?

I don't want to get stuck with a camera that doesn't do justice to the software.
I've heard on this forum that the Panasonic Dvx 100B is one of the best choices but is not HD. The boss says he is willing to go for HD because it will be implemented more in the future and he wants to be ready for it.
Can any of you give your experienced comments on this?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    All Hail,
From our company to you, thanks for each response here. The boss says he is appreciative of the input and is holding off on the purchase of a camera until he is sure he is getting the right one, that maybe the FX1 is the right one.
He sends his thanks, and I thank you too.
As my own personal request, I must repeat the above question for the FX1, I notice it produces mpeg2 format, which I assume needs to be processed through Streamclip before it can be read by FCE HD?

  • Capturing footage form HDR FX7 to Final Cut Pro 5.1

    Hi Guys,
I think my posts are borring as I didn't get almost any replies. But I still need to figure out what to do with my new Sony HDR FX7 and how I can get the footage out to FCP 5.1
I've posted the details of what I've done in another thread here it is:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4655824#4655824
I just retured from the apple store and I was told to meet with one of the final cut pro gurus during my one to one lessons. But the earliest I can do that would be a week from now. I was also told that because it's Sony, there is known problem with capturing HDV into FCP. However, there's seems to be some sort of "patch" or program that you can download (probably a patch for FCP that enables you to capture from Sony HDR FX7.
Do any of you know that the apple store guys are talking about?
Where can I get this patch? What should I do?
I've tried the HDR FX7 on FCP 6 and the result is the same, it captures only first 2 seconds of the full hdv. Please help. Your responce is highly, highly appreciated.
    Thank you,

Please do not double post. It confuses the natives and clutters the issue.
If you have something to add to an existing thread, just add it to the thread, don't start yet another one.
    cheers,

  • Connecting HDR-FX7 camcorder to Macbook Pro help

I have a Sony HDR-FX7 Camcorder. To capture footage it needs an HDV/HV-i.Link cable. The only problem is, (I think) that this doesn't connect to a macbook pro 13inch laptop.
So my question is, what cable(s), what adaptor, if i need one, do I need to connect these.
Here are the ports for my macbook: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3627
Please help me out. Talk to me like I don't know anything about computers, I would be so grateful.

Hi everyone, I picked up on this thread as I am having similar problems with my Sony HDR FX7 camcorder and how it communicates with the latest MAC Book Pro. I have the 9 pin cable referred to in earlier posts, but my new MAC Book Pro does not seem to recognise my camera? I am using Final Cut Pro to edit a video captured by my camera.
In my previous MAC Book I used iMovie to successfully access the video through my MAC, but it doesn't seem to work on the latest MAC Book Pro (or does not recognise the camera)?
Has anyone got any suggestions please?
    many thanks
