Sony HDR-HC9E. HD to MPEG2 and interlacing

I have recently posted a topic on jagged video and not received much response. I was using the Sony "i-Link" convert to SD feature. I have only Just found that my aging equipment will capture in HD. I have tested a 3 min sample of the worst affected section of the movie ( ie - panning and movement close to the cam ).
This works well in FCP and exports as a movie which looks good. I export this to the Batch Monitor for conversion to MPEG2 using the preset DVD 2 pass 90 min setting. I wish this to be for Pal TV so the Inspector details are: Format m2V. width 720, Height 576, Pixel aspect ratio PAL CCIR 601 (16:9), frame rate 25, Field output - Bottom first, High quality, Best motion estimation.
I am still finishing with an interlaced / jagged video.
Thanks in advance for any response.

Thanks again Jerry. My timeline in DV-Pal ( Sony version, exported using their iConvert feature) is 47 min long and takes me about 2 hrs.+ to encode, so I am now working with a very short piece of the worst affected section and able to experiment more so will try that one. At last I have managed to contact Sony support and hope to get some confirmation of field order in outputs etc. I know it should not be a problem but it is failing somewhere. Disappointing for my granddaughter whose wedding DVD is not progressing. I did a grandsons 5 yrs. ago with the DV cam and no problems.
Thanks for the interest.
Bill.

  • Re- Sony HDR-HC9E Compatibility

I am considering buying a Sony HDR-HC9E mini DV tape camcorder but am concerned by adverse comments in previous forum discussions on the subject of compatibility.
Is anyone willing to say with certainity ,from experience, that the HDR-HC9E, using firewire for video transfer, will be fully compatible with my iMac 7,1 Intel Core 2 Duo. 2.0 GHz ( OSX 10.4.11) and with iMovie HD 6 ?

Then I have to ask you, Forrest, what you think happened to this guy, writing a review at Amazon...
+...my new Samsung SC-HMX10C (8GB flash drive)...after plugging in its external power supply, I quickly and easily shot a few snippets of video and a photo or few, then connected its USB cable to my old, slow (pre-Intel) Macintosh mini, whereupon a Samsung external drive icon popped onto my desktop. I dragged four videos and a handful of photos from the folders in the Samsung drive into a folder on my Macintosh. When I double-clicked a video, Apple's Quicktime sprang to life, displayed the standard H.264 (MPEG-4.AVC) video from the camcorder perfectly (without any of the On-Screen Information that another reviewer misled me to fear would show up in the recorded video).+
+Then I tried two more ways to examine or edit the camcorder's movies on my Macintosh: 1) I opened my old, original version of iMovie on my Macintosh, and dragged one of the video snippets onto its movie clip editing pallette; iMovie played it perfectly, without a hint of a hiccup, on the spot...+
and so on. Are you sure this is a fake?
And couldn't iMovie HD recognize HDD data if you used a 1394/firewire adapter with camcorders offering a DV out-port?

  • Compatibility FC studio w/ sony handycam HDR-HC9E

impossible to work with HDV from the sony HDR-HC9E!... the software doesn't recognize it when in HDV mode!... an updating seems necessary as soon as possible!...
(intermediate solution seems possible: FC pro accepts to capture HDV files from the handycam although the setting is on: "DV PAL anamorphic"...)

I'd upgrade.. you're G5 won't run the latest, but it would edit the video captured with your intel machine... AVCHD comes in directly to FCP and is transcoded there to ProRes which blows the doors off the AIC codec... Big time.
    Jerry
If I transcode the AVCHD to ProRes with my intel machine will my G5 with FCP 5 be able to read it, or will I have to upgrade that to FCP 6?

    Hallo,
ich eine MacBook 2,2 Ghz und eine Sony HDR-TG3E.
    Die nimmt AVCHD auf.

    Hi,

question is: a Sony HDR-TG3E isn't recognized, and import impossible..
I'm (=Karsten) not familiar with this kind of 'flashmen' devices (me old fashioned tape guy...)
    any ideas.. ?
I told 'Germany' to connect via usb, and set device to play.. any further ideas? his set-up seems to be compatible..

  • Sony -  HDR-XR350V  - HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2

    Considering a Sony - HDR-XR350V - HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2
Please help - I have been using search and spent about 45 min with a Sony sales person on the phone today, but would love to hear from someone using this camera or an expert who can interpret the specs.
Is this camera a true AVCHD camera and will it work seamlessly with FCE?
I understand, if it is compatible, that I would have to use Log and Transfer and the files would be converted to Apple Intermediate Codec (fairly large file size) I would plan to use an external drive as scratch disk for any large projects.
Here is the link to the spec page for the camera.
    http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666073203#specifications
My ultimate use for camera is editing, using iDVD to create DVD for use on TV, or being able to upload short video projects to Facebook or You tube.
For these shorter projects will this camera also work well with iMovie 09
I am so frustrated trying to find a good camera that will work well with FCE - my old Sony (only two years old has died) I had to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert its files - large learning curve but mastered it. I don't want to go through another complicated process to begin editing again with a new camera ($271 for repair and 90 day warranty doesn't make sense to fix the old one).

Tom - thank you so much - so if for any reason I would want to use SD I could convert with Mpeg streamclip like I did for my old camera. Not sure why I would do that, but just wondered.
I believe the Sony - HDR-XR350V camera has several different settings for filming - are you able to tell me how to set the camera or should I just cross that bridge when I get it. I would like to use the highest quality setting. The Sony sales guy said it has Progressive and Interlace settings - That is over my head. For going to iDVD for play on a TV what would I use. I will be ordering the camera on Monday.
You were the patient one who got me going in the right direction with my old camera - so glad you responded. I have your book and have attended a lot of One to One sessions. Love FCE and just want to get going again.

  • Sony HDR SR-11 SD footage (mpeg2) to FCP

I am editing a video that was filmed from different cameras to output to DVD and youtube. DVD being the primary concern. Some of the footage I need to use was filmed in SD on a Sony HDR SR-1. I am wondering what the best codec (dv25, DVCpro 25, DVCpro50) is to use (to gain highest quality for DVD) when using mpeg streamclip to convert the mpeg2's to dv for FCP.
Also what, if any other settings I should select like "de-interlace video" etc.
    Please Help and thanks.

I would convert to QuickTime with the DV codec as per my tutorial linked above.
The only difference is that you would use DV NTSC as that is the TV standard in the USA.
Your first post says that you are going back to DVD and YouTube. So...
If you play your DVD on a regular TV the interlaced fields will be displayed correctly.
Viewed on a flat screen TV, you can take advantage of the TV's built in adaptive deinterlacing.
When you upload to YouTube, the video is converted to the Flash video format and gets deinterlaced by their converter anyway.

Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized in iMovie09. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

    Hi jcm2656,
iMovie ’09 does not support the Sony HDr-PJ230 camcorder. See this article for a list of cameras supported for that version of iMovie -
    iMovie '09: Camcorder Support
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290#1
iMovie ’11 however, does support it. See this article -
Apple - iLife '11 Help - iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
Note that iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-60p from this Camcorder.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Have FCP, new Sony HDR-FX7e and an iMac G5 (non intel core) please help

    Hi,
This is going to be a bit of a dumb question but i need to ask to be sure of the equipement i have and if i need some new hardawre n my mac to capture the video in HD.
I have an older iMac G5, FCP and a new Sony HDR-FX7e with Belkin 4-6 pin iLink cable.
When i try to capture video that i have filmed in HD 29fps, FCP brings up an error:
Something like: Codec is wrong and also hardware card. I am guessing that the video card is not capable enough as it is the one that came with the mac. Also i am trying to capture the video onto the Hard drive which has 198Gb left. I guess this needs a firewire drive capable of teh right speed.
I am guessing here so please advise as i am so new to this you would not believe and i know it is ambitious of me to expect to plug and play but i can pick it up quickly with the right advice.
Oh, the easy set up i used was on 1080i 60
    Thanks,
    Neil

    Neil,
    1) Your best bet is to get 5.1 if you do not have it yet. It is a paid crossgrade, but as long as you have the original install discs it is a simple process.
    2) The "e" at the end of your camera indicates that it is the PAL version I believe. Do you edit in PAL? or NTSC? Whichever you use just make sure to choose the proper easy setup.
    3) Since you have a G5, I would suggest using that as your video machine. You can get around the firewire situation in one of two ways. First, and best in my opinion, is to purchase a second internal SATA harddrive and install it in the spare bay, set this as your "Scratch Disk" and your off. Second, buy a PCI firewire card and install this in a spare PCI slot, then connect your firewire drive to this. Or, if you feel the need, do both.
    4) As for why iMovie works and FCP doesn't, the simple answer is the iMovie is a consumer program that has much lower tolerances than the PRO FCP. From what I understand, iMovie does not capture timecode and does not capture audio and video as separate files, among other things. To do these things there must be proper communication between the computer and camera.
    5) Another thought is that your camera may be set to downconvert the footage to SD on output. This might also explain why you got something in iMovie and not FCP. Check in the menu system for your cam and see if it is set to downconvert.

  • How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?

How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?
    I have PremierePro-CS5 installed.
This stereo 3D camcorder (Sony HDR-TD10E), output an .MVC (MultiViewCoding) file, coded in H.264 format.
This format is already compatible with Bluray3D stereoscopic format.
    1) But, how to edit the .MVC in Premiere?
    2) What plugin should I use (if exists) for PremiereProCS5?
    3) Cineform Neo3D, can manage the .MVC format? Can convert it to Cineform format file, for import it into Premiere?
    4) What software should I use to convert an .MVC video to an AVCHD H.264 file, and import it into PremierePro CS5 or CS5.5 for editing?
    Thanks!
    Horsepower0171.

Sorry, I am Italian, it is very difficult for me to understand what he says!
I can just read the english text, or follow the actions of a videotutorial!
Thus my question is the same:
    -What software can do that?
-Sony Vegas 10 do the Bluray3D authoring?
-For MVC editing, should I wait for Adobe CS6? Or is it planned an update for CS5.5?

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Sony HDR-HC5

Hello, my name is Marc Bostian.
I'm a new Final Cut user, have shot some video on my HD Video on my Sony HDR-HC5. I have hooked it up with a FireWire 800 cable. to my Dual 2.3 G5 tower. I am able to control the camera in the Capture windows, but I'am not able to see the video on screen or capture anything.
I'm using an Easy Setup of HDV - 1081i60 FireWire Basic.
I have several full tape I need to transfer over and get started learning how to edit. I'm hoping I have something set wrong.. ??
    thanks
    Marc

Welcome to the club' .. I have been on Final Cut since #1, which is about 9 years I believe. And for me, I sometimes feel I have just scratched the surface'. But Final Cut is professional grade software, with so many different possible ways to do things. Unfortunately it has never been just plug & play, at least for me. I can't even remember how many hours I have sat & scratched my head wondering what was wrong, and it would turn out to be something simple I overlooked because I didn't take the time to learn the fundamental's .. I was always to anxious to make a project, and just dive in .. really wasting a lot of time stumbling along by experimentation.
I will say this though, these forums are a life saver, especially the FCpro. forum, for me anyway. A couple weeks ago I didn't have a clue why all of a sudden I couldn't capture HDV. anymore when it has been working fine for close to three years .. Even the certified Apple tech's where I have purchased all my computers couldn't, or probably wouldn't tell me what was up .. but I have the feeling they new about the conflicting issues with earlier software and the new Intel processor's .. After all they are in business to sell computers, not teach. They suggested I call Apple, or search
these forums. There a lot of very helpful & knowledgeable folks here .. and usually most problems get solved .. for better or worse. Lots of Luck ...

  • I have a sony HDR-SR5 camcorder and need to empty the iternal hard-drive. I have downloaded onto Picture Motion Browser and woud like to know if this will have stored all of the data on the hard-drive so can go back and edit later.

I have a Sony HDR-SR5 camcorder with a 40GB internal hard-drive. I need to clear the hard-drive as it's almost full. I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser, but am wondering whether PMB will have stored all the info from the camcorder hard-drive so that I can edit later.
Also, I would like to back-up on another hard-drive, but when I have tried this I can't view the footage stored on the hard-drive so am not sure whether I have backed up sufficiently and in what format? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful...

    >I have managed to download the footage onto Picture Motion Browser
Isn't Picture Motion Browser available for Windows only?  If so, why are you posting in an Final Cut Express forum?  My apologies if I'm incorrect.

I have a Mac Os X and a Sony HDR-CX7 camcorder.  When I get onto the Sony webpage to download the program so I can import my movies, they only have programs Windows.  How do I get this for my Mac.

You shouldn't need any application except what you already have: iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto....
To check on compatibility with your model camcorder, check these out:

Some formats are not readable by the above; you can use something like MPEG Streamclip to convert the footage or Quicktime Pro (as mentioned in one of the articles).

  • HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!! Sony HDR  SR-11 and connecting it to final cut express

I just got this new Sony HDR SR-11. I recorded a short clip and wanted to put it in my computer. I have Final Cut Express 4.0. So when I got the camera hooked up and went into the cameras files, not with final cut yet, tried to look for the files. Confused I went to a sony support site and it told me how to get to them , for a mac. I found the video file and copied it to my desktop. It was in that wierd black and grey shinney box format and said excu on the top , i think. I clicked it...Nothing. I opend it with quick time....Nothing. So I called up sony and after a long discussion the operator said that I needed to buy the MPEG-2 codec for quick time. which I did and...Nothing. So I called up again this new guy says i need Final Cut Pro to read HD files. Which Im pretty sure I dont. So I open final cut, i go to capture and...Nothing. PLEASE HELP ME. IM SOME WHAT NEW TO MACS AND I HOPE SO ONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE

I have been trying for three days to the same thing.
I did get the video content off my camera via imovie 08 but the quality is very poor.
Haven't worked out how to improve the quality yet, I also tried importing the video
via ADVC 110 analog conversion device but that doesn't improve the quality.
I do have Final Cut Pro & MPEG-2 Codec and have been searching for the video in the camera's
hard drive but can not find it.
Can you tell me where Sony told you to find the video files so that I can try & import it to Final Cut Pro.
    Thanks

  • Date and time stamp with Sony HDR CX7

    Hi,
I am trying to figure our how to find date and time stamps for individual clips.
My workflow is as follows: I use disk utility to make a disk image (.dmg) of the memory stick and import the clips from this disk image. Everything works fine, but I am not able to find any date and time information on the imported clips.
I am slowly building a large archive of these disk images and I am wondering whether I need to add some some date an time info manually. I know that this information is recorded on the memory stick as the camera can display them.

    Config:
    Sony HDR CX7
    Final Cut Express 4
    OS X 10.5

I'd also like to ask if it's really necessary that the statuses within the status profile and date profile should maintained in the same positions.
    No

  • I'm trying to upload videos from my Sony HDR-CX550 camera and the files that contain the video (.cpi or .mts) are all grayed out on iMovie. I've been able to upload footage before onto Apple computers but now it doesn't seem to be working. Suggestions?

I've tried many different options including calling Apple Customer Support and talking to them for over an hour troubleshooting the issue. They couldn't do anything. I also called Sony who failed as well. Somebody please help me out. Thanks!

    Hello whatif95,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble importing video from your Sony HDR-CX550.  I found an article that provides some information specific to your camera and iMovie '09:
iMovie: Importing both HD and SD content with Sony HDR series cameras
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
For versions previous to iMovie ’11 v9.0.1, including iMovie ’08, ’09, and ’11 (v9.0 only):
To import the AVCHD content from the camera when MPEG-2 content has also been recorded, you must first import and erase the MPEG-2 content from the camera. You should then be able to import the AVCHD content.
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.
