Sony HDRHC7 HDV Handycam

Does anyone know if a sony HDRHC7 HDV camcorder will work with FCP 5.1?

That would be the "D'oh!" answer, but my read of the Sony tech specs did not mention a Firewire connection. If there is one, then it is mine. Mine. MINE, DO YOU HEAR ME???? MUUUUU-HAAAAA-HA-HA-HAAAAAA!!
er... sorry...

  • Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

    Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
    thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • Sony DCR-DVD505 Handycam: Unable to get video clips, audio

Evaluating Adobe Premier.  Hopefully helpful for other Sony DCR-DVD505 users.
    Objectives:
    1) Get videos from Sony DCR-DVD505 handycam into Premier Elements
    2) Drag and drop various clips into Sceneline
    3) Insert menu markers
    4) Burn DVD
Stuck in Step 1, getting video from handycam, unable to get video clips (with audio)
    First Try: NO AUDIO.
The Sony DCR-DVD505 burns a mini-DVD (1.4 GB) while recording.  After "finalizing" the disk, the media may be imported into the computer.  Streaming was supported by Windows XP driver but is no longer supported in Windows Vista.   In fact, Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) does not even recognize the camera as a DVD drive!  So downgraded to Vista SP1 and used the Sony Picture Motion Browser to import media into computer as MPG files.  Each MPG file is a clip (corresponding exactly to camera record on-off sequence while shooting).  Then opened up Adobe Premier Elements 8.  Used get media to import all the MPG clips into "Organize".  Dragged and dropped various clips...inserted a menu or two and...burned the DVD.  PROBLEM: VIDEO OK, BUT NO AUDIO(?!).  The MPG files on computer play fine (with audio) inside Windows Media Players.  Read all sorts of nonsense about why Adobe Premier (probably old versions) cannot work with "low-quality/compressed" MPG and needs to be a particular type AVI soo....
    Second Try: Capture VOB directly
Forget the camera.  Insert the mini-DVD directly into computer DVD drive, create a new project and followed directions from  "Lowdown on VOB" http://forums.adobe.com/message/2117743 and "tools to convert to DVI" http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317.  I loaded the VOB directly and dropped them into  Timeline as advised by the second post (only hitch being the first VOB pertaining to the DVD menu is not recognized and is neither needed).
However, File > Export is always GREYED out (unusable).  And the status at bottom right seems to be looping on "Background Rendering".  DO I WAIT?  In any case, the whole video is showing up as a single continuous stream and what I want are the clips from the camera?!
Then I tried Prism (again as per the second forum post mentioned above).  It simply did something to process 30 minutes of video and crashed in the end without explanation - saying there was an error in conversion.
Is this AVI conversion even a good idea?  How would I get my clips back??
Bottomline.  My mini-DVD and imported MPGs plays fine in Windows Media Player.  However unable to extract the camera clips (with audio).

Dawg, I have the Sony DCR-DVD305, and have been using it successfully for quite a while with PE7, with few issues, once I had a workflow nailed down.
I believe the 505 is basically the same camera, with some additional features.
This workflow worked for me in the past so I'll pass that along:
Sony Browser to PC as Mpeg.
Mpeg to Windows Movie Maker, output to DV-AVI, taking default settings.
    DV-AVI imported into PE7.
This should also work for PE8.
Upon getting Cyberlinks PowerDirector v7, my new workflow changed to this:
I take the min-DVD directly from camcorder to my PC, and capture the disk via Power Director.
PD will convert the VOB's directly to DV-AVI Type 2 on one pass.
    I then load this DV-AVI into PE7.
(PD v7 was pre-installed on my new PC from HP, or it can be purchased from Cyberlink).
    Other options to try:
Copy the VOB's directly from the mini-DVD to your PC and use Prism to convert these to AVI.
Or load the VOB or Mpeg into PE, then use that to convert to AVI.
(Export to DV-AVI with PE8 is done with SHARE/PC, not Export under the File Menu, which is greyed out).
I've had many issues trying to work with Mpeg's and VOB's when loaded directly to PE with limited success.
So if you can get it converted successfully to AVI outside of PE, I've found this to be a better approach.
Post results, if any of this works for you...
Note: One other thing, if you are working directly with VOB's to PE, especially multiple VOB's from a single DVD, you can encounter out-of-sync issues between video and audio. If this occurs, review this link from Muvipix:

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

I have just spent 2 hrs trying to connect my Sony HC-24 Handycam to i-Movie does not recognize the camera, any advice. ?.

    Fossils,
its odd, Apple used to list iMovie compatible digital camcorders on their site, but now its only digital still cameras. I would first make sure you are using the firewire ports, not USB (that Handycam has both, but iMovie only supports firewire for video I think)

  • I can't use my Sony Mini DV Handycam with iMovie '11

    Hi xXx
I have a Sony Mini DV Handycam Video Recorder/Camcorder and about 40 tapes that need putting onto my computer and have just found out that my computer doesn't acknowledge it now i have Maverick and iMovie '11...!!!
I can't seem to download iMovie '09 from my iLife disc either...
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
Even the names of compatible Camcorders that use Mini DV tapes will do...
Thanks in advance and in anticipation

Just to confirm which version of iMovie you have, open iMovie and at top of screen click on iMovie and select "About iMovie".
    What version is displayed?
If your Mac was not supplied with FireWire then you will need a FireWire to Thunderbolt adaptor , available from Apple store or Amazon.
These run at about £25, $29 so not cheap.
You will of course still require the 4 pin to 9 pin FireWire cable.
4 pin from camcorder, 9 pin into Mac if you have FireWire on your Mac or if you have Thunderbolt then
4 pin from camcorder,9 pin into above adaptor, from adaptor into Mac with Thunderbolt.
If it is the case that you have iMovie version 10 and not version 11 then you may still have iMovie 09 in your applications folder, have a look.
This may be the reason why you can't reinstall from the iLife disc????
I tried to insert images of FireWire and Thunderbolt ports on a Mac to show you but this feature has not been working for some days now on this site.

  • Sony Digital 8 Handycam USB only + Final Cut = No go?

Hi, a while back my parents bought a Sony Digital 8 Handycam, the digital 8 format is identicle to miniDV.
The problem is, FCP doesn't seem to accept USB? This camera only transfers via USB, and I was able to on my PC running Vegas, is this not possible with FC?

  • Sony Z1U HDV Capture Settings for FCP 6.0

Hi, I am shooting a project on Sony's HVR-Z1U HDV camcorder at HDV 60i NTSC. Does anyone have suggestions for settings to capture the material into FCP. I have FCP Version 6, part of the FC Studio 2 upgrade.
    Appreciate any feedback!

There are definiitely some advantages to editing in DV rather than HDV for easy workflow and faster renders, etc.
To capture, you'll have to get the settingns on the deck and in FCP to match. If you have the deck/camera set to HDV then choose the appropriate easy setup in FCP such as HDV 1080i60. If you want to capture as DV, then set the deck to downconvert to DV, and choose the DV NTSC easy setup. You'll want to check the anamorphic box for you capture settings and sequences, but keep in mind if your are working with DV or any SD format, that the anamorphic setting can be esaily applied to clips and sequences after creation or capture.
When you export your web clips with compressor, figure out a square-pixel frame size that is some multiple of 16:9.

I am stumped. Settings are HDV.....1080I 60 ... on presents.

  • 720 progressive output from Sorenson Squeeze and Sony Z1 HDV

    Hi
I have a one off project where I need to film some shots in portrait 16:9 for output on (lots of) 720p digital screens on their sides. I plan on filming this with a Sony Z1 camera in 1080i HD mode on its side and then down-sizing in FCP and converting to progressive WMV files with Sorenson Squeeze.
I know the Z1 doesn't really do progressive filming. Would it be wise to hire a camera that does support it natively for best results? Or would Sorenson Squeeze do a good job of de-interlacing to 720p for HD LCD panels? Plus, does anyone know of a bracket-type attachment to mount cameras at 90 degrees on a tripod?
Any suggestions or tips for best results would be much appreciated, and thanks in advance for any help!

    Tom,
I don't think that your issue is with the Z1. I think that it is with HDV footage in general (nasty format and all) but you don't want to hear that so let's work on getting you going.
    1) You do need some sort of external monitor. YOu have several options, Cheapest is to buy a Matrox MXO and an Apple or Dell 24" monitor. Other options include cards from AJA or Blackmagic. If you are doing everything in HDV I would recommend something from AJA or BM that way you can capture to a more easily editable format like DVCProHD. Do a search for Kona, Blackmagic or capture cards aadn you will find a wealth of info.
    2) for this footage you need to look at the original tapes on an HD tv and see if you are seeing the same thing. This will determine if it is a compressor issue.
    3) How low did you set your bit rate? Max should be below 7 or some DVD players will have issues.
    4) in DVDSP you should be able to bring in your QT ref file and it will encode it for you. If it won't import it makes me wonder if it is being exported properly. Are you going out of FCP by FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME>with current settings, and check Make Movie Self-contained?
One more thing, in this process you are not working with film, others here may be more harsh about this but you are using video so let's call it what it is.

  • Mac won't recognize Sony DCR-SR40 Handycam

I'm trying to import videos from a Sony Handycam DCR-SR40.  This was purchased about 8 years ago. (i.e. 2006 or so)  The camera works fine, I can play, record, use all features.
I am running a mac book pro previously with OS Mavericks, recently upgraded to Yosemite
I am unable to see/connect to the Hard Drive on the Handicam.  I have the docking station and all the correct cables.  It just never detects the cam as an external device.
And, yes, I goto the touch screen USB Select Menu and select [ComputerIcon]HDD - It says "preparing" and never moves from there.
PLEASE anyone have suggestions?  Very important files on this camera

    Welcome to the forums!
As this is the iMovie 5 forum, you will probably get a better response if you post in the iMovie 9 forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1307
Please add information on what format your camera records to. Most DVDs are mpeg2 which is the final delivery format not intended for editing, which means file conversion and loss of quality before you can import it into iMovie.
Or, to put it another way, your camera is incompatible with iMovie.

  • Compatability of Sony camcorder HDV SR5 with FCP X

I have looked at the list of camcorders which will work with Final Cut Pro X and, although the Sony HDV SR10 is there, the SR5 isn't. Does that mean I would waste my money if I downloaded FCP X?
I have Mountain Lion Version 10.8.5 with 3.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory.
At the moment I am using Final Cut Express 4, which is fine. However, I'm tempted by the enhanced facilities with FCP X.

The list of cameras is meaningless as it is grossly out of date and only includes a handful of the thousands of available camcorders.
All DV and HDV tape cameras together with SDHC cameras will work with FCP X.
In any case you can download a free 30 day trial from
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial/
Note that you may need to update your operating system as I believe the latest version of FCP X needs Mavericks or Yosemite.
