Sony HXR-NX5U

My current video camera is a Sony TRV-20, a mini DV camera that I've had for 11 years. I just purchased a Sony HXR-NX5U camera, which records to memory cards using the AVC HD format. The Mac that I have was purchased in 2005 and is a Dual 2.7 G5 with 8GB of RAM. I have Final Cut Studio 2, but am unable to use Final Cut Studio 3 since my Mac still uses a PowerPC chip and not an Intel chip.
What I'm wondering is how well my setup will be able to handle HD video from this camera. Will I be able to work with the video this camera produces at its highest quality settings, or will I need to scale back a bit? Or will I need a new Intel Mac altogether?

Can FCP work natively with AVCHD files
nope.
or is ProRes so good that you wouldn't want to?
ProRes is an editing codec.
Can you export AVCHD, or only ProRes and SD footage once you're done?
Gotta convert to ProRes.
When it records in 1080/24p, does it record in that mode natively? Or, does it record the footage as interlaced and then you can remove the pulldown during the import?
Not sure. I don't own the camera. Shoot a test and see. Or, look that up in the camera manual.

  • HOW CAN I CONNECT A STEREO MICROPHONE TO MY SONY HXR-NX5U CAMCORDER?

I recently purchased a SONY HXR-NX5U professional camcorder, and want to be able to connect an external, wired, STEREO mike to it. But I don't quite understand HOW to do it. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
The camera has 2 XLR mike-sockets, each of which is obviously for a MONO, not STEREO, mike.
And the wire of the STEREO mike that I want to be able to connect has a STEREO MINIPLUG (3.5mm), not an XLR plug, at the end
Is the solution about CONNECTING this external STEREO mike as simple as doing what I've TRIED to do (but doesn;t seem to work) -- which is: (a)insert, into the camera's 2 XLR-sockets,  2 XLR-plug-to-phonosocket adapters, (b) plug into those 2 phonosockets a Y-Connector which, at the "Y" end, has 2 phonoplugs and which, at the 3rd end, has a STEREO MINISOCKET for the microphone, and (c) then insert the STEREO mike's miniplug into the Y-connector's minisocket?
That's what was recommended to me and which I've tried, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I just don't understand yet how to turn off the camera's built-in mike and turn on this external STEREO mike -- but the built-in mike keeps working and this external stereo mike -- hooked-up this way -- stays inactive.
    ANY SOLUTIONS?
ALSO, I've been told that hooking up a STEREO mike this way -- assuming it works -- would give me REDUCED SOUND-QUALITY. Is that actually so? And if so, why -- and what can I do about it?

    A few things...
    1. If you are still hearing the internal mic check the switches on the side panel and make sure the internal is not being fed to channels 1 or 2. The ability to mix internal/external mics is a feature of the camera.
    2. How are you powering the mic? If it doesn't have it's own battery/power supply it is expecting phantom power from the camera which it will not be receiving via the adaptors.
    3. If the mic has its own power you should be able to do this via the Y cable provided the inputs are set to MIC and the side switches are set to INPUT 1 and INPUT two for each channel.
Hope this helps. Feel free to give our support team a call at 800 883 6817 if you'd like to discuss with a Sony tech.

  • Best sequence setting for Sony HXR-NX5U (1920x1080)? Also, why use Sony Content Browser?

    Hello,
I'm using Premiere CS 5.0 and I am hoping to find a sequence setting that doesn't require me to render footage from my new camera, a Sony HXR-NX5U.
Can anyone help me out?  Also, does anyone use Sony's Content Browser?  If so, why?  It seems like a wasted extra step in the workflow.

  • Strange audio behavior w/new Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD CAMCORDER

Help,  I just unpacked my Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD CAMCORDER.  All went well with video, CMU software, etc.  I have CS5 on the way, but for now am still using CS4.  I set up the project with AVCHD 1080i30 (60i).  I import my video and the image looks fine, but the audio is all HISS  - total clipping.  I listened to the file with Sony's CMU software and it sounds perfect.  I have eliminated camera error by using multiple mikes, internal mike, headphone audio sounds great and again, with Sony's CMU software the m2ts files sound normal.  What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated as I really want to use this camera tonight.
    Regards,
    Lisa

How (step-by-step) are you getting the files from camcorder to PPro?
For my Canon Vixia, I simply use WinExplorer to copy the individual MTS files from SD card to hard drive, and then import into CS5
For other cameras, I have read that required "metadata" is contained in the folder structure, so an entire folder must be copied from camera to computer... often or sometimes using the software that came with the camera, since it is designed to do a "complete" copy

  • Sony HXR-NX5U - HD or SD?

    Hello -
I shoot with Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM in AVCHD FX (24Mbps) 1920x1080/60i format.
I mainly deliver in DVD or DVD-DL format to my clients.
I am noticing that the quality is not as good when watching on a standard DVD player due to the massive HD file size on a DVD.
    My question is:
The camera allows me to shoot in SD mode as well. IF, I were to shoot in SD format and deliver on DVD or DVD-DL.
Will the quality be better and nice, sharp looking? or do you suggest shooting in HD format and deliver on DVD/DL?
    Thanks for your help.

First off, there is no such thing as a "massive hd file on a dvd". All DVDs are standard definition. What you are seeing is the effect of compressing your file from a larger image to a smaller image along with the necessary compression to bring the bit playback rate under 7 .
What most likely needs improving is how you compress the material for DVDs.

  • I need a workflow for a PAL DVD from Sony HXR-NX5U footage.

    Dear community,
My task is as stated in the title.
Please let me know what process you guys and/or gals have with complete success.

OK, my camera shoots in NTSC frame rates only, as I purchased the cam in the US. (Subsequently, Sony released this upgrade to make the NX5U have the option to switch to PAL Frae rates) whcih I will be doing...
Do you mean that this camera is natively switchable between PAL and NTSC - how so?

  • Sony HXR-NX5U AVCHD

I have tried this in both final-cut 6 and 7 with the same results. In the log and transfer window final-cut reads the HD files perfectly, but when I shoot in SD mode (mpeg) nothing shows up in the transfer window. I called sony and the tech at the other end had the same issue. He said that it appears to be a final cut pro issue. Is there something with-in the codec that is missing or coming soon?

The camera is very new, and employs a different form of AVCHD than other existing AVCHD cameras, even SONY ones. I have issues with L&T with their HD flavor...any footage over 15 min takes 3-5 hours to import. Haven't tried SD.
This is what happens when camera manufacturers introduce new cameras with new flavors of existing codecs...the editing systems need to catch up.
There is a beta of ClipWrap in the mix, but that isn't readily available. You can write to them though, and see if you can get on the beta to deal with the SD footage. I'm sure they'd love to have you.

  • Editing footage with sony HXR-MC50E what cable or program do I need to transfer

Editing footage with sony HXR-MC50E what cable or program do I need to transfer footage to computer and into Final Cut Pro?
I am editing with Final Cut Pro
    I have a Mac
My footage is on the HXR-MC50E

One small correction-- you do not use File-->Import. You must use Log and Transfer in FCP 7 or Import From Camera/Import Media in FCP X. In FCP 7 the clips will be automatically converted to ProRes upon import. In FCP X you can choose to work with the native files (re-wrapped to .mov) or you can optionally transcode to ProRes. When importing in FCP X, enable the 'create optimized media files' option to convert to ProRes. If you do not enable this option the files will remain in their native codec.

  • IMovie '11 and Sony HXR-MC2000U

Hello, I was thinking about purchasing the Sony HXR-MC2000U AVCHD Camcorder, and was wondering if this camcorder was compatible with iMovie '11, or Final Cut Express 4. Either or would work. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know!
    Thanks in advance!

Use MPEG Streamclip to rip the disc, and switch to a new camera.

  • Easiest way to import files from Sony HXR-MC50u

The pro-"sumer" Sony HXR-MC50u camera doesn't seem to to be supported for iMovie 11 or Final Cut Pro.     Should I merely record on SD cards or memory stick and use a reader to import.  It might be slow... but what other options should I consider.

Your experience with unlisted cameras is not typical.
There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of camcorders or cameras shooting video and new ones are constantly proliferating.
There is no way Apple (or any other company) can test every camera so those on the lists represent a tiny percentage of what are available.
So long as the camera shoots an internationally approved format (DV, HDV, AVCHD etc.) it will almost certainly be compatible.
In short the lists are therefore virtually useless unless you are buying one of the limited number of cameras that have been tested.
Unfortunately a few camera companies insist on developing their own non-standardised formats.

  • Sony HXR-NX70E OK with FCP 7?

    I am considering purchasing a Sony HXR-NX70E.
Are there known problems importing footage shot with this camera into FCP 7 (not FCP X)?
I am also hoping someone can comment on this:   if I shoot in 50 hz (i.e. PAL / European standard) but my project is for a US client, AND the final program will only be delivered on the web, does it matter?  Or do I have to do some sort of Standards Conversion using e.g. the Nattress Standards Conversion software.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Nick.  The reason I said I might shoot 25 fps / 50 Hz if my end result is a US client is:
I may end up buying the camera in the UK (where I spend most of my time, and shoot two thirds of my projects).  Ideally, I wanted a camera that was switchable, i.e. would work for both US client and UK client projects 60 hz / 50 hz respectively.  So I was exploring whether if I bought a camera in the UK, that was NOT switchable, I would be able to shoot 25 fps / 50 hz hz and still create content that works for US client projects that are WEB DELIVERY ONLY.  (My understanding is that the problem comes in if the final video is displayed on a television in the US if it is shot  at 50 hz instead of 60 hz, and that for web delivery and viewing on a computer monitor there is not a problem.).
The cameras that I have found that are switchable 50/60 hz are a bit out of my price range.  The next step down is not switchable.  I am currently considering the Sony HXR-NX70.  Sony says it may be upgradable in the future but it isn't now.  The camera has only been out a few months.  So I was trying to determine if I would be able to use the camera at all on US projects if it only shoots 50 hz.  Sorry if this was not clear before.  Any further thoughs would be much appreciated.
I do understand about the recharge / power suply issue, having lived in London on and off for 10 years and having lots of devices that come from the US originally

  • Importing from Sony HXR-MC1P

Because I needed a good quality action cam video camera (I fly paraglider) I bought a Sony HXR-MC1P which uses the AVCHD format only to realize FCE 4.0.1 (I have a license for FCP 5.0.4 but as my needs are well below professionals I haven't updated it for ages) didn't recognize it.
Is there any means I can import video from the camera? Either by other software conversion or "trick"?

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.
Please tell us exactly what you're doing and what happens when you do it. It's possible this device will not work with FCE and will need to conversion, but we really need a lot more information.

  • Sony HXR-NX5 and Sony HXR-MC50

Has anyone used either the Sony HXR-NX5 or HXR-MC50 cameras with FCPX?
I am especially interested whether FCPX can interpret large spanned clips and join them together correctly on import.
    Many thanks!

    Update:
FCPX does support both cameras. Although I have had one or two instances where it doesn't like the data on a SD card, because of one corrupt file, in which case FCPX crashes. (Most likely caused by a faulty SD card). In those cases, I have had to use Clipwrap to create Prores files before importing.
