Sony NX5U footage strange (AVCHD)

First my computer specs:
Processor - Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 GHz
Motherboard - ASUS P6TD deluxe
Memory - 24 GB RAM
Motherboard cards:
   PCIe x4 - Black Magic interface
PCIe 2.0 x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #1 (card 1 driving 2 monitors)
   PCI 1.0 - open (covered by NVIDIA Card)
   PCI 1.0 - SATA 3 card (for 4 additional SATA ports)
   PCIe2.0 x16 - NVIDIA GTX570 #2 (card 2 driving 2 monitors, 4 monitors total)

OS - WIN 7 Pro 64 bit (all the latest updates...Adobe & MS)
Additional - Black Magic Design MultiBridge Pro 2, Sony HVR-M25U VCR, HD monitor on Multibridge Pro HDMI output, 1000 Watt power supply,
                 2 internal BluRay burners, 1 internal DVD burner, 1 external BluRay burner

OK Here the story…
I have a new Sony NX5U camcorder, I first shot in in HD 1080/60i, then I used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
On the next shoot, I changed to SD 480/60i, as the final edit was to be shown from a DVD, used Sony Content Manager to bring footage in, opened Premier 5.5, the footage looked jaggy.
I dragged the clip to the new item (New BIN)... to set the presets the same as the footage.... the footage still looks jaggy
I even played back the footage on the camera, captured through the HDMI port on my Black Magic MultiBridge Pro, with the same results...
I exported (re-encoded) the footage as a H-264, also as a MS AVI...brought the footage back into Premier.... looked the same..
I set the sequence presets the same as I shoot… but to no avail…. My Sony PD150 footage looks better.
The footage jerks... not smooth... forget trying to pan...
Notice the telephone wires...not smooth... I call the effect "The Jaggies" (I believe the same as aliasing)... What am I doing wrong? See picture below (the video looks much worse than the picture shows)
the telephone lines look like stair steps... (but on the Sony flip out monitor... it looks great... also much smaller monitor, though)

Try This:
copy footage from SD card to your HDD then use a Blackmagic preset AVCHD for a new sequence (don't use Standard def footage from these cameras). If you have a BM card you should have a TV connected if so what does that picture look like. When you putput via Encore burn a DVD not a Blu-Ray and that will downscale for you.

Probably not natively in CS4.
There wasn't native support until CS5... CS4 needed an add-on.

Jittery footage with Sony NX5u

Not sure if this is a camera question or editing, but I'll try the question in this forum first.
I've filmed a dozen projects with my new Sony NX5u cameras but am just now getting around to editing the first one (big mistake ).
Video is SD 720x480 60i. When I play it back it is fine on the computer monitor as well as the HD preview monitor (although the interlacing is bad - separate question probably) but when I burn it to DVD using iDVD and play it back on a regular SD television (not flatscreen / HD) it plays back very jittery, as if I filmed it with 1/30 shutter speed or in 24p and wasn't smooth. Even the static shots jitter but it's much worse with pans. The above setting on this camera should be the same as my older tape cameras (Panasonic DVX 100 series), right? 30 fps equals 60i.
First off, could this be a camera issue or an editing/settings issue? Secondly, is there a fix?
Oh, I have tried adding the deinterlace filter and MAYBE there is a slight improvement but not much.

How do I ingest Sony FS7 footage into Premiere Pro?

Hi! I was told the Sony FS7 footage can natively ingest into Premiere. But my footage is crashing every time I try to import. Any ideas?

Perhaps depends on the camera. I've ,,, in my little experience ... come across some that was. Don't remember which brand/camera was used ... but it was a total stopper. It was the first AVCHD I'd worked with, and I copied (as is not uncommon for the uninitiated) the folders that seemed to have actual video content. Finally got VLC to play it from my computer, but it was only video ... so after a bit of learning over the net, figured out the error of my ways. Sure enough, soon as I added the folder that seemed to have something odd in it but not video ... I had sound. And from the things I've seen around here with the problems of those that have trouble with sound in AVCHD (among other things) ... perhaps I'd just assumed the same thing applied universally.
I've done only a little AVCHD with my GH3, just enough to test out the comments from others that the AVCHD was noisier than the MOV files ... which, yes, they are. Not terribly, but ... MOV is simpler to work with, why shoot a noisier codec?

Shooting SD on a Sony NX5U

Hi all
New to the forums so forgive the newbie question.
I just bought a Sony NX5U but I'm still shooting SD with my VX-2100s (mostly weddings). At this point I need to shoot SD with my NX5U to match footage with my 2100s. How do I shoot and bring in the SD footage into FCP 6.0.6? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Larry,
Drop one of your VX2100 clips into a new sequence and click "yes" to the question, do you want to change sequnce settings to match clip settings. Then go to your sequence settings in the top menu bar and write down all the settings. Then go to MPEG streamclip, or whatever your using to convert, and use the exact same settings to convert your NXcam clips. Hope this works.

What timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format?

I am shooting with the Sony HXR NX5, and i would like to ask what timeline format shall i use for footage in AVCHD format? I do not see any format in the Final Cut Pro and in Motion that matches my camera format.

IF you are working with FCP 7.0.3 (the last version) then you use Log and Transfer to ingest your footage from that camera, and Log and Transfer will convert the AVCHD camera files to ProRes.
Once the camera files are ingested, make a new (empty) timeline, and either drag a source clip or edit it to that timeline and you will be prompted to match the sequence settings to the source clip. Say yes and you should be good to go.
AVCHD, H.264,etc. files are not directly usable in FCP without conversion.

Sony NX5U Log & Transfer Long Clips Issue

I've used FCP Studio for a very long time, and have been using the Sony NX5U camcorder for 3 years. Never had any problems once FCP 7.0.3 came out. But about a year and a half ago, I started noticing long clips would crash FCP 7 just seconds before the end of the upload. The max length seems to vary between 65 minutes and 75 minutes. I could swear I had earlier projects with longer clips and no problem but couldn't track any down. Yesterday I uploaded a 74 minute clip no problem, but a 93 minute clip crashed. Today a 68 minute clip crashed the program. Never had a problem with clips under 60 minutes.
The upload indicator bar gets within 1/32 of an inch from the end when the crash happens.
My work-around has been to break the clip into clips shorter than 60 minutes. I overlap the time code by about 1 second and then put it all together on the timeline.
I started looking at the forum today because in the last few days I recorded two separate projects each with multiple long rolls of either music performances or speeches. Most are about 90 minutes, two as long as 180 minutes. It's a hassle breaking these clips into shorter pieces so today I started reviewing the forum to see if anyone else has run into this.
There doesn't seem to be a lot posting about it, and the the ones that do post seem to have different "crash" times ... I saw one having a similar problem with clips 45 minutes in length, for example. The only suggestions offered are to use programs like Clip Wrap.
Is this really a restriction with Sony AVCHD files and Log & Transfer in FCP 7? I tried a few third-party solutions but they seemed cumbersome. When FCP 7 Load & Transfer works, it works great. It's just these 65+ minute clips that are the problem.
I just doubleclicked on a 123 minute clip in the AVCHD Package in the Finder, and it opened fine in QuickTime Player X. I can export it out of there. The "Movie" export did it very quickly ... less than 20 minutes ... but it ends up as an H.264 file so I would need to render in FCP 7 or deal with it in Compressor to get it to ProRes. But it does give me one cohesive clip.
What other experiences have users had trying to Load & Transfer long Sony AVCHD clips into FCP 7?
I'm OS 10.8.4 on my iMac and 7.0.3 in FCP. I run into the same length restrictions running FCP 7 on a new MacBook Pro. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.

I've never worked with clips that long but have noticed a problem skimming longer clips in Log + Transfer to set in / out markers.
My advice would be to use Clipwrap. You can either re-wrap the file or transcode it to PR.
Their gig is file conversion so if there's a problem they'll eventually fix it.

Sony EX1 footage renders jumpy

Hi,
This is frustrating me to know end.
I just imported a PPro Mac project into AE Mac with Sony EX1 footage.
When I render, some of the clips jump back and forth (forward and backward) randomly.
It plays fine in PPro and I can RAM Preview a single clip in a separate comp just fine, but a render or RAM Preview jumps.
Any suggestions?

I'm creating a work-around for the EX-1 black-dropped-out frames in After Effects (X64 CS3 CineForm):
1. Edit a 'story board' in Premiere with the EX MP4 raw-files
2. Convert only the files I need (from all the 150 shot) in the CineForm-HDlink app to .MOV files
//filesize will become a little more, will shift a couple of frames from the MP4-raw, quality the same
//HDlink is a BAD application, because I have to transcode every MP4 file seperately. MXF files are bugging in HDlink
//HDlink does NOT trancode the audio into the new .MOV file! Sucks.
3. Replace the Premiere 'edit-MP4-raw-files' with the converted .MOV files in After Effects
4. Re-sync all the audio, 'export audio' from the MP4-raw files in Premiere to AE
5. Voila! Render without troubles
I love Quicktime!

Do you mean that this camera is natively switchable between PAL and NTSC - how so?

Earlier today I posted a topic regarding issues I'm having with SD footage shot on my NX5u cameras being very interlaced. Further, when viewing the footage on an SD tv (either via an external monitor through Firewire right off the timeline, or, exporting footage and burning to DVD via iDVD) it is very jumpy or jittery. A deinterlace filter helps this some, but not nearly enough to be comfortable giving product to client.
So, what would be helpful now is simply to hear from others on how you're handling footage from this camera in FCP - particularly SD. My camera settings are SD 720x480 60i. When playing this footage back on an HD tv the interlacing is severe, utterly unusable.
Compare this to my old camera (Panasonic DVX-100B; 720x480 60i) where the footage would appear somewhat distorted on an HD tv, but nothing more than as to be expected when viewing SD footage on an HD tv. But from the Sony camera it is not even usable, professionally.
I'm trying to trouble shoot and first determine if the "problem" is in camera or FCP. Further, with FCP capture settings, timeline settings, export settings, etc.
If you haven a suggestion then great, but I'm asking anybody using the NX5u with FCP to respond and just tell me your experience. That will help me troubleshoot.

Sorry for the lack of details. I thought about posting screen shots from the tv, so I will try that now, good idea.
Anyway, the camera is the Sony NXCAM HXR-NX5u. It records AVCHD files to SDHC cards. AVCHD files were converted to ProRes 422 upon L&T into FCP. As I learned in Shane Ross's tutorial on log & transfer workflow, I should have dumped the original files from the card onto a harddrive first, but to this point I have not done that. I have taken the footage straight into FCP (via converting to ProRes 422).
Late yesterday somebody mentioned to me that these cameras have had issues with SD. I haven't heard anymore on that or what issues they are.
As for the image quality being subjective, I understand what you're saying, but the amount of interlacing visible is far worse than anything I've done in the past (ie, tape-based SD cameras).
Am I able to upload a picture here or should I post it somewhere else and provide a link?

How can I get movies from my sony DSC-HX9V in AVCHD format to the mac?

I have recently received a Sony DSC-HX9V camera. It does movie recordings in AVCHD format. Is there a simple way to transfer these to imovie or elsewhere on my Mac? Any ideas please. Thank you.

and read the notes re. your model. So, the next best thing then would be MPEG Streamclip (free) which should be able to convert your footage to something iMovie can work with. Note: You may need to purchase the MPEG2 Playback Component from the Apple Store (less than $20) which may be needed (that depends on a) your OS version and b) the MPEG Streamclip version).

Quicktime Playback of Sony F3 Footage

I'm running Snow Leopard and have .mov MPEG-2 files from a video shoot with a Sony F3. I'm not editing. That will be done in an Avid, but I'd like to view the footage and have my own copy. How do I get Quicktime to recognize these files. I read something about a Quicktime component but don't understand how to get it or what the right approach is. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip, but the footage does not appear.

I'm currently a Final Cut Express editor so Sony's FCP tool is not for me.
Calibrated does have a FCExpress tool but I'm going to pass on the $99 and just wait for my Avid editor to do the work. This is not what i wanted to do, not ideal. But I'm stuck.

They provide demo versions of their codecs. You could therefore try it for no cost and at least see if it is a possibility for the future.

Timecode missing from Sony NX5U NXCAM

A well documented problem exists in reading the timecode from Sony NXCAM NX5U cameras. When importing the timecode Premier CS5 always reverts to 0:00 for each clip. Edius always was able to read the timecode. FCP has a new release that can read the timecode now. Has anyone heard anything about any effort by Adobe to fix this problem? Interestingly and almost (almost) humorously, Vegas 9 also has the problem with not being able to read the timecode..

Like other cameras that shoot AVCHD, you need to preserve the folder structure from the cards in order for timecode to be read. I don't think that timecode is recorded into the MTS files, but in metadata files stored along in the folder structure. I believe these are the CPI (clip information) files inside the PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\CLIPINF folder. I don't have an NX5U folder structure to test, but I do have one from a Panasonic HMC150. If I move/rename the CLIPINF folder, all the clips start 00:00:00:00. If the folder is there, however, the timecode is read.
The upshot is that if all you have are MTS files, Premiere won't read the timecode.

Need desperate help on importing Sony SR11 footage

I am having a real problem importing ALL SR11 footage into my new iMac. I have a lot of footage on my Sony. First I connect it to my iMac via USB, turn on the Sony, select USB Connect, it connects and iPhoto opens, not iMovie9 so I manually close iPhoto and open iMovie. Previously iMovie did open and showed some of the movie clips but not the recent video I just shot. I checked the Sony and the 48 clips I need are there and they play perfectly in the camera. The "NO NAME" icon is on the desktop and if I open it, there are 44GB of 60GB on the drive. There are several folders and a list of 287 MTS files in the STREAM folder which I guess are the video files.
I tried the archive and the files are on my Desktop now. And of course the same thing happens here too.
What am I doing wrong? And I also tried a new USB cable.

I called Apple Support and they sent me some important information. You can not mix the formats to import into iMovie. I continually saw the SD footage but not the HD or AVCHD files. It was suggested that I remove the footage and format the HD in the camera. Sooooooo what about the footage on the camera which could not be replaced.
Thank goodness for PCs.
I had an old version of the Sony PMB program on my HP laptop which is very slow. This program allows you to import both HD and SD files so I connected the SR11 to the PC and imported both formats into the PC in separate folders on the Desktop for easy locating. All appeared OK in the PC so I then formatted the SR11 erasing everything including stills (very important) on the card and HD and checked the camera to be sure it was clean. I then exported the HD files back into the camera and then checked to be sure all was there and then disconnected the USB cable from the PC. This took forever because I had 40+ Gigs of data on the camera which had to go both ways, import and export.
I forgot to turn iMovie off on the iMac but as soon as I plugged the camera USB cable into the iMac the import window popped open and walla, all the HD footage was there so I spent the rest of the evening importing it into the iMac as MOV files. The SD footage was already in the iMac because iMovie saw it initially when I tried to import everything. The still files were copied to the iMac via the network.
I will say that this was the first time the iMovie Import window had ever opened on its own. Just like the instructions say.
I reformatted the SR11's HD and I am now ready to start afresh.
KEEP THAT PC in the closet you just never know when it might come in handy!

Sony HD Footage Needs Additional Components

Hi Gang
I'm working with FC6
I have QT Version 7.6.4 (518.35)
Certain HD Footage shot on a Sony HD camcorder at 23.97 Frame Rate won't open in QT, just get a black screen. And in Final Cut, only get sound no Video.
QT prompts me that certain additional components are needed but there is a list of places/sites. Not sure which one to go to?
