Sony Optiarc BD-5850H Blu-Ray in iMac

Has anyone ever swapped out the factory slot load Sony Optiarc AD-5680H DVD Player/Writer in an iMac with a Sony Optiarc BD-5850H bluray writer/player?
It has exactly the same dimensions and SATA connections as its in the same family as the original so is there any reason why it wouldnt work?

I think you swap the bezels. I did with mine.

  • Replace W520 Sony Optiarc AD-7710H DVD Burner with Sony Optiarc BD-5750H Blu-ray Burner?

I am planning on replacing the DVD burner which shipped with my W520 (4270CTO) with a Blu-ray burner.  Evidently not all W520s ship with the same drives.
Does anyone know whether the front bezel on the W520 is the same for the two Sony Optiarc drives mentioned above?  If not, which Blu-ray burners can accept the W520 front bezel from the Sony Optiarc AD-7710H, which is the drive my machine shipped with?
    Thank you!

  • Playing blu rays on iMac

I bought a Samsung Blu ray burner.  I wanted to play Blu Ray movies on my new iMac as well as have the superdrive capabilites and apple didn't offer such a product. I just got the drive, but it will not play my blu ray movies. What player do I need?

Other posters here have bought Sansung drives and complained that they wouldn't work, either.
I have been to the Samsung website on several occasions to research this issue  and I can find no evidence that these drives are Mac compatible.
I believe that no optical drive from Samsung is compatible with Macs.
Here are some Blu-ray drives that are known to be Mac compatible.
Return the drive you have and try these.

  • Blu Ray on iMAC for home cinema ?

Has anyone been able to get Blu ray to work on their mac?
I use Plex on my intel mac as a data source for my home cinema set up which works really well after I have ripped my DVD's to hard drive. I notice that Plex can also play .MKV high def files very well.
I currently play blu ray discs through my kids PS3 which is in the other room but I really want to play them from the hard drive on my mac through Plex onto my big screen.
So my question is - is it possible to get an external blu ray disk reader to connect to my imac ? and if so which one ?
Also, what is good software - eg - handbrake/mac the ripper etc to convert the blu rays so I can store them on my hard drive?
I read somewhere about Macs not being able to handle bluray as PC's do ? I also have linux ubuntu but no windows PC's and I really don't want to turn to the dark side (Windows's) for this one.
    Any ideas much appreciated ?
Please don't waste your time telling my to move my PS3 and other such solutions... and yes I do own the disks.......
    thanks in advance.

Apple computers cannot play Blu-Ray disks natively due to the format not being supported by the hardware or OS X software..

  • Sony Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500S is not reading blu ray disks

I have a pavilion dv7-1070ev and upgrade from windows vista home premium 32bit  to Windows 7  home premium 64bit.The laptop came with the optical drive Sony Optiarc BD Rom BC-5500S with Firmware version 1.83.The problem is that the bd-rom is not reading blu ray disks. When i put in CD's/DVD's everything is fine -> drive starts to spin up and a little later the disc is readable/available in windows. When i put in a BluRay disc -> drive just makes a very short silent spin effort (to identify disc?),and no disc is available in windows. When i double click my drive icon (in my computer) it pops up a window asking me to insert a disc.Note that it is the first time I put blu-ray disk to watch blu-ray movie.I have never used the bd-rom when the laptop had windows vista.
The drive is compatible with windows 7 b4bit

Searched in forums I found these solutions :
    A clean registry
    1. To begin the process, start the Registry Editor.
Click START,click RUN, type REGEDIT, and then click OK.
Click the plus(+) next to the following folders in the left side of the window pane:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        SYSTEM
        CurrentControlSet
        Control
        Class
        (4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318)
      2. Look for any of the following names in the right side of the window pane:
        UpperFilters
        LowerFilters
    3. If any of the items above are listed, right click on the item and select DELETE.
    4. Be sure to restart your computer after you have deleted the files in the registry.
    B.new firmware
1.Download the latest version for the retail version of this drive from sony at:
     http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/uploads/media/WinDL_BC5500S_V106_02.zip
Sony says that you can only update from Firmware versions 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1,04 and 1.05. Previous firmware version(s) other than mentioned here are probably OEMs and therefore cannot be updated with this file.  Contact  your PC manufacturer (FTS, DELL, HP....) if you require firmware updates for these drives.
I have HP version 1.83 dated December 2007 so I cannot update.
    C.Uninstall/install bd-rom
Uninstall bd-rom from device manager ,restart the pc and then looking for drivers.
    searching not found something.
My driver is up to date (21/06/2006) and the driver is 6.1.7601.17514
    D.Clean the laser lens
I put a cd cleaner to clean the lens, but that didnt help
I have used the solutions but the problem is not solved.
    Can anyone help ;

QuickPlay is made by Cyberlink who also makes Power DVD 10, 11 and 12 products.
You have to uninstall QuickPlay and all Power DVD products (don't use QuickPlay anymore, it's outdated and it will not be updated as it's been long discontinued). There is also a Power DVD folder(s) that needs to be deleted as well.
After you have uninstalled everything, run CCleaner as many times as necessary and delete what it finds in its registry cleaner.
     http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Here is also a link for Power DVD11 cleaner as well, use this after CCleaner.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/16915.page (restart after all of this)
Are you running the trial of DVD or have you paid for it ? If you want to purchase some Blu-ray software then stay away from Cyberlink, I use Total MediaTheatre 5 and it's much better.
Also available for free is Power DVD 10 for HP owners, when installed correctly, it's OK, but it's not with out its problems.
If you want to install Power DVD10, then post again.
The other thing that worries me is your Sony drive, I have had many people here that I can't get the Sony drive to read Blu-ray's. I don't know if its firmware is out of date (there is no firmware update) or if the new updated Blu-ray players have become incompatible.
You may be forced to buy a Pioneer or HP Blu-ray reader.

    Dec 3 2011:
I bought a Sony BVD-780W 3D Blu ray  home theater in a box at Best buy, but can't display a 3D Blu-Ray on my Vizio  E3D420VX passive 3D TV.   After talking with tech support at both Vizio & Sony, but not getting a definite answer from either.
I can play 3D content using the Sony 3D online apps included with the home theater, so I don't think the problem is the TV or the HDMI connection.
Has anyone figured out if or how to play 3D Blu-Rays with a Sony 3D Blu-Ray player on a passive 3D TV?
There seems to be a communication stand-off between the TV and the Blu-ray.  Vizio tech support told me that as soon as the TV senses 3D input, it will switch to 3D mode, but Sony says the player will not play 3D unless it detects a 3D TV.
I wrote more about the specific situation on my blog and included more screenshots here: iCoolSpark blog.

Dec 4, 2011 - After my 2nd contact with Vizio tech support and my 3rd contact with Sony Support and some additional trial and error, I am now able to get the 3D Blu Ray to play with my passive Vizio 3D TV.
Here is the support request I sent to Sony Support (my third contact with them on this case - with personal info removed for privacy)
    Product Group: Sony
O/S          : Select Your Operating System
    Model        : BDVE780W
Question    : ref EventID #E####### I can't get 3D on a Vizio E3D420VX passive 3D TV from the 3D Narnia Promo blu-ray provided with my BVD-780W home theater.  I think the 3D TV & 10.2 Gbps HDMI connection are OK because I can display 3D content from the Sony 3D Experience online app.  The integrated 3D blu-ray player seems to require an active shutter synch signal from the TV before it will play 3D.  Is there a firmware upgrade planned to fix this limitation?
Here is the response received from Sony - which is very close to providing the answer, but not quite right, and not enough to solve the problem.
Thank you for contacting Sony Support.
I'm sorry that there in no 3D when playing back the 3D disc in the 3D Blu-ray Disc Home Theatre System. Based on the information you have provided, I suggest that you set BD output to 1080P. Please follow the steps mentioned below to set BD output to 1080P:
    # Press the HOME button.
    # Select Settings .
    # Select Screen Settings .
    # Select BD/DVD-ROM 1080/24P Output.
    # Select Auto.
    # Press Enter.
If the issue is unresolved, please contact our telephone support staff who will be happy to provide further diagnosis and assistance at: (800) 222-7669 or (239) 768-7669 Intl
Currently, I do not have any information on future firmware upgrade.
    Thank you for your time.

I looked at this setting when I received the above response, and found the BD/DVD-ROM 1080/24P Output was already set to "auto" . It didn't occur to me immediately to try setting it to "off", however, after 24 hours with no solution I decided to try turning that setting off to see what would happen, and guess what?  PROBLEM SOLVED!    Here is what the setting looks like on the screen.
Now when I play the 3D Blu-Ray, the menu comes up with 2-D or 3D.  I can select 3D, the TV auto detects 3D mode and I confirm.  I get a message to put on the 3D glasses and I'm watching 3D Blu-Ray on my Vizio!
I'm glad that my initial hunch about the blu-ray player looking for an active sync signal was wrong!

  • FD Trinitron WEGA KV-30HS420 problem with Sony Blu-ray players

I have a Sony FD Trinitron KV-30HS420 television, which has worked very well over the last 11 years or so.  I've owned a Sony BDP-S780 Blu-ray player for a few years, and it has worked very well with my TV.  I believe I updated the firmware on the blu-ray player a month or two ago, to the M07.R.0631 version from December 2014.  When I plugged a USB flash drive into the player - one I've used several times before successfully - the screen went black.  The only difference I can think of is that I created folders on the USB flash drive, and put the mp4s into the folders.  I think I may have had a similar problem with the blu-ray player a year or two ago when I also used folders on the USB drive, but I was able to fix the problem by unplugging the player and rebooting.  That did not resolve this issue. Now, if I try to turn on my player, which is hooked to my TV via HDMI, the "Sony Blu-ray" symbol appears as usual, then the thin blue line that stretches partially accross the screen horizontally, but at the stage where the screen will usually flicker and the blue line will expand to fill the whole length of the 16:9 screen, the screen instead turns black.  It appears the player is still functioning (as I'll explain below), but the TV is no longer able to process the signal. I spent several hours with Sony tech support going through everything - checking the connections, swapping HDMI cables, lowering the resolution on the player, and changing other player settings, but I still have the same problem.  If I hook the player up to a newer Vizio HD television, everything works fine - which is why the player seems to be functioning ok.  If I hook my HD DVR to my television, it continues to work fine as well - so I don't think it's a problem with my HDMI connection on my TV.  It appears to be a communication issue between the blu-ray player and the TV. I have been meaning to buy a second blu-ray player anyway, so I purchased a Sony BDP-S5500, thinking that might resolve the issue.  But the exact same thing happens when I plug it into my Sony TV.  That blu-ray player also works fine with the newer Vizio TV.
I spent several additional hours with Sony support making sure there wasn't an issue with the new Blu-ray player.  This included about an hour of hold time, and being forwarded to over 4 different support staff, including an "escalated" forward to a "Level 5" support staff.  I had to repeat the issue several times to the staff, including Yeng (Employee #C8WZ), Charlie (Employee #C75Y), and Mel (Employee #C822).  The first staff I spoke with - Eric - told me he'd call back the next day after checking compatibility issues.  Neither he, nor any other Sony staff, called back after 2 days, so I called support again - they had no record of my conversation with Eric, and I had to start the whole process over again.  The Sony phone support so far has been very disappointing, to say the least. Any help would be appreciated.  I'm guessing that by plugging in the USB with the folder structure, it somehow triggered a setting on the older BDP-S780 blu-ray player to use an updated setting - a setting that is common with the software on the newer blu-ray player.  Has anyone else had a similar issue with one of the FD Trinitron WEGA tvs?  Thanks for your help.

Your older TV is not capable of displaying either 1080P or any progressive program at tthat. On a standard definition (SD) non-progressive CRT like yours, blu-ray is a complete waste. Even if it could accept the signal, it wouldn't look any better.

  • Connecting a TV to the internet -- TV internet apps or blu ray

We are buying a new HDTV -- probably the Samsung LED/LCD.  Don't need 3D.  There are multiple models and to get one that has the Samsung internet apps, it is $200 more.  Should I be getting the TV with internet apps -- where it is all pretty and loaded in or should I get my internet to TV options via  a Blu Ray player.  And what do I need to get in a Blu Ray player for this. I think I need WiFi capabilites.  The other Blu Ray quesiton is someone told me that only certain units let you stream HD content--so what does that mean.

Just purchased Sony Ex7oo hdtv and Blu ray wireless dvd player.  A Wi FI DVD player can easily be setup to your wireless network ; and then you can download directly to TV.  Otherwise you need to buy a usb receiver for about $80 for your TV to do this.

  • Connecting Blu-ray DVD to TV

I recently purchased a Sony HDTV and a Blu-ray DVD and the expensive HDMI connector cable.  Unfortunately, the tv only
has one HDMI outlet and it connects with the Verizon HDTV control box and it only has one HDMI outlet. So how do I connect
the Blu-ray DVD to the TV?

The correct solution is Components cables on the VZ STB use the HDMI for your blu ray .  You want to try to stay away from the HDMI switches cause issue with the Verizon STB's Trust me on that one

  • How to convert Hi8 to iMac? Have 2 video cameras: Sony CCD-YRV98 video Hi8 and Panasonic SDR-SW20 digital video. Please provide the steps to convert to iMovie '11. Also, is there a way to burn in blu-ray?

I already have two video cameras. One older (Sony) in Hi8 and the less older one (Panasonic) which is digital. Between the two can it be accomplished to transfer the Hi8 video on tapes to iMovie?
I have the newer iMac 21.5" and also would like to know if it is possible to record this on blu-ray. The iMac didn't come with iDVD, which means I have to get that uploaded. Any other suggestions?

    Sony Hi8 camcorder
No it is an Analog Camera - and have NO Digital-Out
I may be made a Wrongful assumption in that the - Panasonic digital camcorder - was a Digital 8 Camera.
If it is - it has a Digital Out (FireWire) and can playback the Hi 8 tapes from the other Camera.
If it is a miniDV Camera - it also have a FW-out (Digital out) - BUT can not play Your Hi 8 tapes.
Then there are not so many ways to do this.
If Your Panasonic digital camcorder - Has Analog in RECORDING ( not all have this, it was an EXTRA Cost ! ) - Then You can playback from the Hi 8 Camera to this and record onto a miniDV tape - to be played and Captured/Imported into Your Mac.
The Panasonic digital camcorder - Might have a feature - Play trough - that makes it possibly to use it as an Analog - Digital bridge - some can do this - But You've not told the exact type/no: etc - So I can not guess.
If this still do not work (The Panasonic digital camcorder do not have an Analog in connection/function)
    - Then You need an Analog/Digita Converting box - from Hi 8 to this A/D-box then to Mac via FireWire.
There are several types and prices - I got a fairly expensive box due to that I've lot's of old VHS tapes in even bad quality. And this - Canopus ADVC-300 - has a function - Timebase Correction - that helps a lot in regard to drop outs and Audio slowly going out of sync. I just keeps perfect even over several Hours of VHS-tapes.

  • Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S570 won't connect to iMac

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to connect my new sony blu-ray player to my iMac wirelessly. My iMac is set up as an airport base station, and I have no problems connecting my iPhone to it to use the internet.
Internet sharing is turned on, and i'm using a 40-bit WEP password. Every time I try to connect my blu-ray player, it connects to the network, but cannot connect to the internet. Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas? I'm pretty frustrated.
    Thanks!

Hi there I'm having a similar problem with the s570 - it finds the livebox network ok but I enter the WPA password
The AirPort Extreme can use the following WPA security settings:
    WPA2 Personal
    WPA/WPA2 Personal
Which of these are you trying to use?
Is there something in the instruction sheet or setup page of the Blu-Ray player that specifies exactly what type of security settings are compatible with the device?

  • Can anyone explain how I go from a Sony HD camcorder .m2ts file to viewing the video in HD on either DVD or Blu-Ray?

I have recently started to edit footage taken on a Sony HD Camcorder using iMove 11.
Uploading the .m2ts file was no problem straight from the camera to iMovie, but I (stupidly) assumed that I could burn an HD DVD from iMovie/iDVD to view on a DVD player. I've done a bit of internet research to find out why the quality of the DVD is so bad i.e. SD rather than HD and I think I understand it. Just.
Further searching to find out our to convert AVCHD/.m2ts to either HD DVD or Blu-ray has boiled my brain. So much stuff I read was a couple of years old so I wasn't sure what is possible.
Can anyone tell me how I get to the point where I can upload the .m2ts to the iMac, edit the footage and burn a Blu-Ray or HD DVD?
    Cheers!

Booted the Mac this morning and it now works. I tried Alchroma's solution but whether the stereo is Plain or Matrix, it works both ways. I don't think that this was the solution as a result, but thanks for the suggestion. To confirm, my Easy set up is HD / AVCHD Apple 1920 x1080i60, the only thing I can think I did differently compared to yesterday is that I shut my Mac down having changed the Easy setup. Previously, I only changed the easy setup then closed FCE4 down.

  • IMac won't accept blu-ray discs

My iMac won't accept a blu-ray disc when I insert it - the iMac spits it back out after about 10 to 15 seconds. I then tried a normal DVD and the iMac accepted it and started playing it almost immediately. Is it not possible to play blu-ray discs on an iMac or Powerbook? Are there any fixes?

    Hi guys,
I in the same situation as Seattle Oz, in that I am thinking of buying an iMac and would like to use it to produce high-definition videos. I currently use a Sony VAIO VGN -- A R21S which has a Blu-ray disk drive. I am told that with the use of Roxio Toast, I can burn to a Blu-ray disc but cannot play it. I find it pretty incredible that a product that is renowned for video editing and allows you to produce a Blu-ray disc doesn't actually have the facility to play it! However that being the case, what does anyone else do, to produce HD quality videos and how do they export them, if not by Blu-ray disc. I would also like to know what format the output is in, when it is burned onto the Blu-ray disc.
