Sony SDT-9000 scsi tape drive under udev

I've installed Arch .7 and have updated the system with pacman.  I set up the system to use udev.
I have an Adaptec AHA-7850 scsi card with a Sony SDT-9000 tape drive attached as the only scsi device.
When I check out /dev, there is an sg0 device, but no tape, st0, nst0, etc.  dmesg shows the tape drive identified at boot, and cat /proc/scsi/scsi also shows it.
I can't use mt on the sg0 device, and I'm not sure if that is my controller or my tape drive, and if the tape drive, how I gain access to it.
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I figured it out.  I was using kernel26-scsi, but didn't realize I still needed to load the scsi tape module (st) into rc.conf.  Did that, now it works.

  • SCSI Tape Drive 599-2081-01: What tapes?

I can find no documentation whatsoever on sun.com for the SCSI Tape Drive 599-2081-01. I'm thinking of buying this tape drive from a friend, but he doesn't know what tapes will work on it.
Will Exabyte 8mm 112metre tapes work, for instance? I already have some of them.
This is to work with an Ultra 10. I doubt an my old Adaptec 2940UW card will work with it... I'll have to get a PCI card that's suitable for Solaris 8.
    Thanks!

I have one of these drives and currently use Exabyte 170m (Mammoth) tapes... they run about 50 bucks
and their part number is 312629...

  • SCSI auto sense failure when SCSI tape drives are present

I've got a driver based on Sun's old SCSI Solaris 8 bst.c sample that worked fine up until the latest Solaris 10. Now I get a "Check condition with Auto Sensing" failure on all SCSI targets using this driver whenever a SCSI tape drive is present.
Is there a document that describes SCSI driver changes with the latest Solaris 10?

When a failure occurs pkt_r is 0 (command complete), pkt_state has flags 0x17 (which mean xfer didn't happen and STATE_ARQ_DONE didn't happen), but the sts_chk bit is true indicating a check condition.
rqsense option is set, so the driver doesn't attempt to manually retrieve sense data. Should it?
Anyone at Sun want to advise on an OS behavior change that might be linked to this?

  • How to add SCSI tape drive card to Hyper -v 2012

    Hi,
It is possible to add HP LTO tape drive through SCSI connector in Windows server 2012 core installation standard edition.
    Regards,
    Shahul Hameed

Are you referring to Windows Server 2012 or Hyper-V 2012?  Big difference.
With Hyper-V 2012, you only have the Hyper-V role, no other roles. With Windows Server 2012 you should be able to do it, if the HP drivers allow you to install without a GUI, or you may want to install the tape drivers with the GUI and then remove the GUI
to go back to a "core" install.
You cannot connect or pass-through a tape drive to a Hyper-V VM, regardless of the host.

  • Drivers for scsi tape drive

    morning, mr
i have a SUN blade 1500, solaris 9, i attached Fujitsu tape drive 3480/90 M2488C, in adaptec scsi (se) card, but i don see the drive in solaris, the scsi card is good (tested) and Fujitsu tape drive is good (tested).
Please, what i need to do?, what command, patches? i don know wath to do
    thank you
    victor Rodriguez

Consider using a SCSI card that has been qualified to work in a SPARC-based system.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunBlade1500/components.html#SCSI
Adaptec brand cards do not work in that architecture.
    They work in PeeCee's.

  • Is it possible to use a tape drive under OS X?

I tried posting this on the OS X discussion page without success, but there have been a number of posts on this discussion page regarding DLT drives so perhaps someone here has the know how?
I have a variety of SCSI drives including LTO, DLT, Exabyte and DAT that I read and write under Solaris and Linux, mainly with the 'tar' and 'dd' commands. I want to do the same under OS X, however OS X does not appear to have the vital tools I am used to such as 'mt' to control the drives. Using a backup program such as Retrospect is not an option since the tapes need to be read on other Unix systems - I have distributed 'tar' written tapes to many other individuals without a problem but never to/from a Mac.
    Fingers crossed,
    Simon

    Hi Simon,
We looked in Unix tools for Mac OS X at one stage, and I was under the impression these guys had a command line tool set which was cross platform compatible.
    http://www.tolisgroup.com
Never really investigated much further as we decided on a different backup system.
    Good Luck

  • External tape drive DAT 72 problem

    Hi all,
I have solaris 10 sparc running and working very well
but i have problem with external SCSI tape drive DAT 72 problem
it seems to me the tape drive is manufactured by SUN microsystems
    when i ran ls -l /dev/rmt/0
    it reveals the following output
    bash-3.00#  mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status
/dev/rmt/0: No such file or directorywhen i ran ls -l
    it reveals the following output
    ls -l /dev/rmt/0

SCSI cable is connected properly to Tape device and to server as well
the tape has SCSI termination dongle as well and connected properly to Tape device as well
any ideas would be a great assist

We use a IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library. 1 Drive with 23 slots.
It is a Dell TL2000 tape drive.
The DPM-Server is a x64 Windows 2012 R2 with Microsoft System Center Data
    Protection Manager 2012 R2 Version 4.2.1235.0
In Device Manager I have a Medium Changer device which is IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library(Driver Version 6.2.4.1)
and Tape drives has IBM ULTRIUM 6 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE(Driver Version 6.2.4.1)
The tapes are not write protected.
Is this a tape issue or a protection-agent failure? Any suggestions??

    Hi,
We have seen this when using OEM drivers - please install the Microsoft in-box tape drivers.
    1) Open device manager
    2) Locate the tape drive
    3) Right-click and look at the properties.
    3) Under the DRIVER tab, select UPDATE DRIVER
     a) Select the Install from list or specific location (Advanvced) - next.
     b) Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install. - next.
     c) Uncheck the Show comtabile hardware checkbox.
     d) Highlight LTO under the manufacturer.
     e) Highlight the LTO tape drive under model - then next.
     f) This should install the Microsoft ltotape.sys driver.
    4) Rescan the tape library in the DPM console, if a duplicate tape drive appears, then run the following utility.
c:\program files\Microsoft dpm\dpm\bin\DPMDriveMappingTool.exe to remap the tape drive and remove the duplicate
    5) Now inventory the library and try a new backup.

  • Remote tape drive

I have system taht only has a tape drive attached to the SMC. Can you use a remote tape drive under solaris 10? do you nfs the tape drive? how do you connect to a remote tape drive?

Well, when you boot a machine into single user mode from a CD or DVD, it will not automatically configure the network, but you can do this by using normal ifconfig commands.
Before doing the restore you will have to create a new filesystem on the disk by runnings newfs and then mount it as /a or similar .
You can perform an ufsrestore from a remote machine by specifying the remote machines tape drive as the path to restore from, e.g.:
    ufsrestore if <user>@<remote server>:<tape device>
for example, to do an interactive restore from a remote tape::
    ufsrestore if admin@remote-server:/dev/rmt/1
.. one drawback with this is that ufsrestore probably rely on rsh to communicate with the remote server, so you might need to enable rsh and configure a .rhosts file for the user.
You can probably pipe the tape over ssh as well, with something such as:
    ssh <user>@<remote-server> "dd if=/dev/rmt/1 ibs=1024" | (cd /a ; ufsrestore xf -)
    .7/M.

  • Sony SDT-5000 Tape Drive & OS9.2

Good evening (well it is where I am...) everyone.
I have recently obtained an immaculate (almost NOS!) Power Macintosh 8600/250, running 0S 9.2.
It comes equipped with a Apple factory fitted tape drive (the aforementioned model). Apart from the usual computer (pronounce it just like Scotty did in ST:TVH) manuals and software, there is nothing that tells me how to use (or interact) with this drive. I have some tapes and when I put them in, the drive appears to recognise the tape and there is much flashing of LEDs.
The tape drive shows up in the system profiler but its entry indicates "no mounted media inserted".
A search of the sony DDS tape archive doesn't really help me with my current predicament which is this:
Is there any driver or software I need as I would love to use this tape drive with my 8600/250? The zip drive only takes 100MB disks and I have already filled five of these up...
Any help would be gratefully acknowledged.
    Kind regards,
    PW&Co.

Hi, Padraig, and welcome to Apple Discussions. The best thing to do with your tape drive is ignore it, and get a nice big external hard drive on which to back up your data.
The reason you hardly ever see tape drives advertised any more is that practically no one wants them — with good reason. They're dead slow, costly, trouble-prone, inconvenient to use, unsupported by most current consumer backup software, and generally inferior in every imaginable way to hard drives, whose per-GB cost has now fallen to less than 10% of what it was when the 8600 was a current model and tape drives were seen as reasonable data backup devices.
Buy yourself a $15 FireWire PCI adapter card and a big FireWire external drive. You'll be far happier than you'd be fighting your tape drive.

  • How can I connect a DLT-IV Tape drive with SCSI interface to Quad G5?

I have had no problems with my "Quantum equivalent La Cie DLT-IV Tape drive" on OSX connected to the G4 Quicksilver using an Adaptec 2930CU PCI card - but I can't move that to the G5 as it has to be PCI-Express cards as far as I can tell.
Adaptec pre-sales support inform me that Adaptec have no Mac support in their current product range.
Has anyone found a solution to this connection requirement that will work with Retrospect and DVD StudioPro?
If there is a workable solution which is no longer available to buy - I would still be interested in knowing so I could scour ebay for it.
    TIA,
    Richard

    Hi Richard;
If you go to ATTO, they are offering a ExpressPCI PSC which include a SCSI bus on sale for $24.11.

  • Can I connect an external DLT Tape drive to the SCSI connector on an E450

Hi... totally new to SPARC. I have inherited an E450. It appears to have the 8 bay option. I have 6 scsi disk drives installed in slots 0 through 5. Internally, there is one ultra scsi controller in slot 2 and two internal cables running from the top of the card, one for each channel. I do have an extra ultra pci scsi card, but when I plugged it into a pci slot, the system would not boot. Bottom line, can I connect an external DLT drive to either Channel A or Channel B at the rear of the Unit and not intefere with other SCSI devices (i.e. the disk drives). Currently, the DLT is set to SCSI ID 8. If this isn't recommended, how do I install the secondary ultra scsi card and have the system recognize it ? Note that the Hard drives have been wiped and I WILL be loading Solaris 10, but have not yet. I wanted to make sure all of the hardware worked first. The second PCI Scsi controller I have is an Adaptec 39160, and I'm assumming it will work IF needed. I'd prefer not to use it if necessary.... ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated ! Thanks, Randy

I suggest you leave the current internal connections just as they are.
You never know when you'll need to add more disks.
That Adaptec card is for PC's.
It won't work in a Sun SPARC-based system.
What sort of SCSI interface is required for that tape device?
Single-Ended? High Voltage Differential? Low Voltage Differential?
You need a card that matches that interface type if you hope it to "drive" the tape.
One quick way to tell, is to examine the chassis of the tape peripheral
and find the small icon that should be at the port for the SCSI cable.
For example, Sun's 375-0005 card is Single-ended and is what you already have inside your E450.
Sun's 375-0006 is a HVD card and would be correct for A1000 and D1000 arrays or L7 or L25 tape libraries.
Sun's 375-3057 card is LVD and would be appropriate for Sun's D2 array.
The manual for that 375-3057 card happens to have pictures of the SCSI icons I just mentioned.
See page 35 in that manual.
    http://192.18.109.11/816-2156-11/816-2156-11.pdf
Once you confirm what's needed by the tape peripheral, we may be able to suggest how to connect it properly.

  • IDE/ATAPI Tape Drive: Support?

    Hi Friends:
Does anyone know of a device driver/hack to allow IDE/ATAPI tape drives to work under Solaris 10? The BIOS recognizes the drive -- and I can also use the IDE/ATAPI SCSI emulation within Linux to write to the drive.
Is anything similar supported on Solaris 10?

I never have used an ATAPI tape drive.
But I do know that some tape support was added to the Solaris
USB kernel modules (e.g. with the S9-x86 patch 115554-19,
S10-x86 should have the same support).
An idea would be to try on the these USB<->ATAPI bridge devices
(external enclosure) and attach the ATAPI TAPE device to such a
bridge and use the thing as an USB tape drive.
Works fine with ATAPI CD/DVD writer devices. Since I don't own
an ATAPI TAPE, I've never tried such an USB<->ATAPI TAPE
    device, but it might work.

  • Need a DLT Tape Drive?

I have a DLT Tape Drive I was using up until I updated to the latest version of OSX.
I was using it with Retrospect. But now there is an OSX, Adaptec, SCSI, Retrospect issue.
The bottom line is that Retrospect won't work anymore with my setup.
Anyone need a DLT Tape drive.
    Save me from doing ebay.

It's probably your Adaptec Card no longer working under OSX. I think the Atto is the only one that will work reliably under the latest OS
