The CPU is not upgradable. You have to buy a new MBP.

I have a Sony Vaio with a Intel Core Duo processor. I've never used a linux contribution before (exept Ubuntu), and now I searching after a lightweight and not too "userfriendly" interfaced OS.
What can you say about using this rather than any other linux?

With that modern of a processor you should be fine. If everything was working under Ubuntu, you might want to take a look at a few key files (like <code>/etc/X11/xorg.conf</code>) and possibly see which drivers your machine will require, but I'd say you should be able to get everything working...with a little hard work. Arch doesn't hold your hand nearly as much as Ubuntu does, but I'd say if you're looking to learn, you've found the right place to be!
(note: I came from Ubuntu as well over a year ago)

GPU and CPU high temperatures on Sony VAIO VPCEA1S1E

I have a problem with my Sony VAIO VPCEA1S1E (with Intel Core i3 330M and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 inside). The temperatures of CPU and GPU are higher under Linux than under Windows. As a result the fan is much more noisy.
Under Windows
When the system is idle the temperatures are about:
GPU: 52-58°C
CPU1: 42-50°C
CPU2: 36-45°C
In System Monitor tool there are 4 CPUs displayed and two of them (CPU1 and CPU3) remain suspended most of the time (while CPU0 and CPU2 are running all the time). The cooling fan is silent. This is OK.
Under Linux
When the system is idle the temperatures are about:
GPU: 67-69°C
CPU1: 55-57°C
CPU2: 35-57°C

I've also tried using Power Management tips for Radeon from Arch Wiki but the only option I could set in /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method file was dynpm and it made no effect.
It seems to me that the main problem is power management of the Radeon card as it interrupts CPUs very often and heats most. I suspect that the CPU temperatures may be increased because of the Radeon ones (but I may be wrong).
I hope someone can help with the issue...

@kismet010: Did you run aticonfig --initial (as root) after installing catalyst? It's very important. Before I run it the temperatures (and fan noise) were the same as with xf86-video-ati. Actually there are some more configuration steps that have to be taken after installing catalyst - check ATI Catalyst @ ArchWiki.
Now I'm bothering with dual head configuration because catalyst incorrectly sets the primary screen (i.e. the other way round as xf86-video-ati does) but it's for another thread.

Anybody know why my Sony Vaio S series won't recognise my iPhone 3GS ?

I just bought a Sony Vaio S with Intel i5 chip, however when i plug in my iPhone 3GS absolutely nothing happens. The phone doesn't even charge - I've checked the cable with my old Dell and it works . I've downloaded the latest iTunes and can't seem to work out why I'm getting zilch from the laptop? I've tried all 3 USBs on the thing but still no good.

How do I transfer contents of hard drive on PPC iMac G4 to a new quad-core Intel Core i5

         Although my PPC iMac G4 still works OK, I am beginning to realise the time has probably come to get a current model in order to keep up with all the advances that have happened since I bought it about 8 years ago: I will probably get the new quad-core Intel Core i5.
         As this will only be my second computer, I am wondering how I can transfer all the stuff on my hard drive onto a new computer and how easy it will be,given the apparently outdated connections on my G4 like USB 1,and possibly other things I don't know about.I am running 10.4.11.
          Any tips gratefully received.

As Allen indicates, Setup Assistant appears automatically, since you do have firewire, the transfer should be speedy, depending on how much data are on the G4. The firewire on your G4 is FW400, your new Mac has FW800, but you can get an inexensive adaptor that will allow the connection, since the ports are different.
You don't need an external now, but I strongly advise getting one, with a drive as large or larger than your new Mac, you should clone/back up frequently, I use SuperDuper! which will allow automatic backups.

Be sure that the battery is fully charge then try the following:
Hit the ESC key after power on to bring up the Start up Menu and then select System Diagnostics (F2). Now run the battery test.
If the battery is OK then try the below suggestion:
Go to the Control Panel ----> Power Options and then select the HP Power Manager on the left column. You can then select one of the power plans and see the effects on battery life.
Depending on the power plan selected and what applications your are running, you may not get more than one hour on battery.

Very likely not.
RAM gets improved over time like everything else, so if the RAM is too old it won't be compatible with newer machines.
TO confirm, use Crucial.com and punch in each machine, then read the RAM requirements and specifications, if they match, then your good.
But I'm willing to bet they won't be beause of the age difference between the two machines.

Upgrade RAM yourself through macsales.com for $60. Use the remaining $140 of Apple's mmeory price and upgrade for $150 to hi-res (1680x1050) and anti-glare. I never regretted that upgrade on mine.

my dilemma is if i go 2.7ghz i5 with 8gb of ram and the 750gb (7200rpd), after i buy the magic mouse and the keyboard, i'm already into $1367.00....
where as if i got a imac for $1399.00 i'm looking at a 2.5ghz i5 quad core with 8gb ram and a 500gb hard drive, with the amd graphic chip. plus i'm also getting a 21.5" led screen. where as with the mini i would have to hook it up to my existing monitor or even share it with my existing computer.
i love the look of the mini, but it is really hard for me to justify spending that much money having to buy all the "extra's", just have a working computer. when i can just pony up $32.00 more and get a whole sytem...

I have found some 2x8 (16gb) DDR3 cas Lat. 9 12800 204 pin 1600 RAM replacement memory that I want to install...but then I saw that it was a quad core...can I go beyond just the 2x8gb RAM? OR will the upgrade I have found have to do? (I've already found a hybrid 750gb drive to replace the clunky 5400 rpm 1TB hard drive!!) Is this last step... (the DDR3 Cas.
