Sony VRD-VC20 Disc Compatibility

Hi,
My father has been using a VRD-VC20 for years to archive his television shows and has recently run into problems with disc compatibility.  He has always purchased DVD+R discs, either Sony or Memorex, without issue until recently when he tried a spindle of Sony, then returned it and got a spindle of Memorex, and neither set of discs was recognized in the device.  He was receiving the message "please insert a blank disc" (or something that effect) when he tried to record with either of these media.  He also found some of the older Memorex discs, and these worked correctly in the device.
Since it is highly unlikely that two sets of 50 discs were manufactured incorrectly (he's VERY thorough and tried all 50 discs from both spindles unsuccessfully), does this device have issues with newer discs because of manufacturing differences from previous discs?  Since one of the media in question is actually manufactured by Sony, perhaps you can verify what might be different?  Can you provide guidance on what media is compatible with this device going forward, so I can avoid my poor father blindly guessing at Staples in the future?  Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kendra

Hi Kendra,
Welcome to Sony Community!
This error will appear if you're using a disc that have been already recorded on other recordable drive that is not compatible with this drive. This will also appaer when you insert a finalized DVD+/- R or DVD-RW disc.
Discs that can be used:
In stand-alone operation, you can only use DVD+R (Single layer disc), DVD+R DL (Double layer disc), DVD-R (Single layer disc), DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs.
Also, try recording from a different source and check if that helps. If the issue persists, I suggest that you get the DV Direct serviced. You can initiate the service request from the below link:

  • Sony Video Recordable Driver VRD-VC20

Is there anyway to get a Sony Video Recordable Driver VRD-VC20 to work with Windows 7?
    Thanks! Yrma

    Hi Yrma,
The Windows 7 and Windows Vista operating systems were released after the introduction of this DVDirect model.
Compatibility testing with these operating systems has not been done.
Although it is possible the DVDirect Recorder may work with these operating systems, it cannot be guaranteed.
Only Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional have been certified to work with this DVDirect Recorder.

  • VRD-VC20 Transfer Questions..please

    Hi
I am using WinXP HOME SP3, 500HDD and 200HDD onboard with an INTEL Q6600 Quad CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT GPU, and 3.33MB DDR. NERO9
A friend of mine bought a VRDVC20 DVDirect Transfer device and could not figure this out. They bought it at Best Buy for $230.00. I told her I had bunches of old VHC Camcorder tapes I wanted to burn onto DVD. I also purchased the Studio 12 Pinnacle hardware and software and still trying to figure that out too.
This DVDirect VRD-VC20 came with NERO6 Software, (because it is old) but I already have Nero 9 NeroVision v.6.0.6.0 / Express v.9.0.9.4 / Burning Rom v. 9.0.9.4 with all the Nero9 Apps. Installed on my computer, so I should ONLY install the Application and NO NERO software.
I went to the eSupport page here and it shows both the firmware and software update. VIDEO CAPTURE PLUG-IN v.1.9.3I, & VIDEO CAPTURE UPDATE v.1308) Will any of these downloads mess up my already onboard Pinnacle Studio 12 capture software?
I have (1) a VCR, (2) an Analog JVC 1997 Camcorder, and also a Pinnacle Studio 12 program on board my computer.
The Included Sony software Disc is REV. 6.10W, and I may need to find a possible upgrade to this software.
Before I hook this up, is it possible to capture from analog camera/VCR burn it to computer, then edit any of the bad places out, then use Nero9 to burn, or is this unit strictly for straight non-editable video transfer?
Can you hook the SONY burner up to the front AV jacks of the VCR and pause and record onto DVD while watching on the TV screen exactly what you wish to record, or do you just record blind using the VCR and the SONY burner separate of the TV?
On the box, the Write speed is 16X Max burning, if I connect it to the computer, so it's Ok if my DVD Rom writes only to 8X? or do I need a faster DVR-DVD Burner? The same with burning/writing to the disc inside the machine?
Any tricks, precautions I should know about, or is this a waste of time? Thanks for any info on this.

The Pinnacle Studio 12 software should run fine after the update– if you do have any issues with shared files then uninstall and reinstall the software after you run the capture plugin software update.

You can use the VRD-VC20 for both – it can be used to burn from your computer or capture directly from a camcorder or other connected video device.

Yes, the VRD-VC20 will capture whatever is connected, so you can either record blind and convert/edit later or you can pause either the recorder or the device on the fly while monitoring.

Yes, the drive can write at a maximum speed of 16x when using high speed DVD+R or DVD-R discs. When connecting a computer you can specify the write speed with the software. Depending on the type of disc you use you may get better results with a slower speed.

  • SONY VRD-mc6 problem

I am playing Mini-Dv tapes from my Panasonic DV-2000, and using the RCA (Red,White, Yellow) cables to connect into me SONY VRD-MC6.  The tape plays fine, I can see it on the Sony screen, and can monitor sound from the Panasonic.  During the playback, my Sony VRD stops and gives me an error "Can Not Complete Playback" or "Cannot Finish Writing to Disc".  After 1 or 2 failed discs, it will finally work.  This process then starts again where the next tape I transfer will kill  2 of my DVDs and then the 3rd will work.  A few times, it will actually complete the transfer of the tape, and then give me a "Unable to Finalize Disc" error.
Does anyone have a clue as to why this is randomly happening??
     THANKS for any help.

The quality of the videos are better when imported using DVi (firewire) or i.Link. If you have this type of cable, it is best to use them to import the videos to discs.

  • Import from Sony VRD-VC10

HELP! All my family videos have now been copied onto DVD using the Sony VRD-VC10 DVD Direct gadget. I want to print a frame from the disc. It plays properly on the IMAC. Apple told me to buy Toaster 10 to "rip" the disc on to the computer and put it into Quicktime or MpEG format. Roxio has been unable to get it to work with these discs. ANY SUGGESTION????????

you mean, you like to take a screenshot from a scenery on this DVD?
    no 'ripping'/conversion needed..
download the free player app VLC (videolan.org)
    playback your DVD
hit pause, when you reached your wanted 'frame'
use the usual key-short-cuts of MacOs (Apple-shift-4 and hit the spacekey.. click with 'camera' into player window)
process resulting pic in any other software..
=> Apples own DVDplayer app doesn't allow screengrabs, therefore the usage of a 3rd party app.
don't expect wonders in pic-quality.. a DVD has small res and is highly compressed.. good for watching on TV, less good when whatched on Computers..

  • Copy Video From Sony VRD-MC3 DVD Recorder to Quicktime Pro

I burn short clips to DVD on my Sony VRD-MC3 burner. I then load it on my mac to convert over to quicktime pro so I can create clips and add to my movies. The DVD plays on my mac DVD player but I can't get it to open on my QT pro so I can convert to the necessary movie extensions. The Finder wont show any folders on the DVD. Can anyone help me with being able to load these files and then convert using quick time Pro?
    Thanks

I found this info about the recorder in a Google search:
    Disk /dev/hdc: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
    Disk /dev/hdc: 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/hdc1 1 10 80000+ 83 Linux
    /dev/hdc2 10 20 80000+ 83 Linux
    /dev/hdc3 20 30402 244036536+ 83 Linux
Partitions 1 and 2 are ext2 filesystems storing the firmware files (locked up in a signed+encrypted cramfs image, so hacking will be hard). Partition 3 is encrypted xfs. Until someone cracks the encryption, no directory listing and no TS files (plus no guarantee that Sony is using TS files to store the content anyway). Breaking the encryption on any of this stuff may be tough since the manual acknowledges that they are using GNU Privacy Guard. On the other hand, since people have reported being able to update multiple units from the same Sony-provided USB flash drive, that would seem to indicate that the firmware isn't individually signed and encrypted for each unit, making it more significant if someone does manage to figure out the keys and signing scheme.
Sony does this kind of stuff all the time. It's similar to Macrovision protection on VHS tape recordings.
My guess is that the encryption is passed on to the DVD copy of the file which allows viewing but not any duplication or conversion.

  • How can I easily take clips burned using a Sony VRD MC3 Unit?

When I burn clips using the Sony VRD MC3, the clips will play on my computer but the finder does not show any files on the DVD. I think Sony creates it that way.
I was able to copy by creating a dmg image on the desktop and then burning to a new DVD. However, it would not be recognized by the DVD player on my macbook Pro like the original that came out of the VRD MC3. Any suggestions?

  • Error message when burning to Sony DVD-r discs

Just bought 200 Sony DVD-R printable discs from Costco, and I am trying to burn a 15 minute short film in DVD studio pro. The DVD just spins in Formatting and I get this message:The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error.
I have burned this same film many times with my Nexxtech DVD's and it works fine, but the Sony discs don't seem to work. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    D-

Try burning at the lowest possible speed (probably DVDx2) and see if they work.

  • Trouble burning Sony dvd-r discs

I am not able to burn video to Sony brand DVD-r discs and I am able to burn to memorex discs of same type, if I slow down the burn rate from 8x to 3x.  Any way I can use the Sony Discs?  Thanks.

Hi! Sense You have not posted your model number found on the bottom of your laptop; there's no way for us to know what OS you have or any thing else. How many different Sony DVD's have you tried to burn video?? If you have W7, there are trouble shooting features in the Action Center, which can be accessed from search.

  • Bluray disc compatability

I have some questions about imovie and dvd burning. I made a HD movie and burned it to a blank bluray disc, using imovie HD, idvd and toast 7. The disc will play on my macbook pro but the disc will not play on the playstation 3. The playstation 3 reads the disc as a data disc. Does anyone know of a way of burning a bluray disc so it will play on the playstation 3?

Heres how I have done it. I made a Divx HD dvd and play it on my computer that will give you 720p HD. The other option is to run Parallels and Windows and run the Sony software that will record DVD in AVCHD. This will play on the PS3. You do not need to us your Blu Ray disc. The PS3 will play a standard DVD recorded in AVCHD in HD.

  • Any Sony HX9V dig camera compatability problems with imac?

Hi Anyone aware of compatability problems between the new Sony HX9V dig camera and my Mac before I buy
    Cheers Vernon

    I don't see any problems.
    1. Images
When you connect the camera to your Mac you can copy the JPG images from one of the appearing  camera folders to your hard drive.
    2. Movies
There is a (little!) problem with best quality movies US format 1080/60p / EU format 1080/50p. These can't be imported directly. (I'm using FCP X.)
But you can use the free Media Converter (http://media-converter.sourceforge.net)* with the free Re-wrap AVCHD plugin (same website) to convert the available MTS files into QuickTime MOV files (1080/60p) which can be imported into FCP X. (Before I import my movies I trim them using QT X.)
(Note: I assume in iMovie you can only use them as 1080/30p (losing every other frame). I'm not 100% sure - I made a test some months ago.)
*) You can also use ClipWrap ($50) but I can't see a difference.

  • Sony HDR AX 2000e compatibility w/ iMovie

    Hi,
I've just been offered a Sony HDR AX 2000e carmcoder and I would like to know if iMovie is enough for simple video editing or if I need to use Final Cut Pro X.
    Cheers,

If you're using the HC9 in hi-def mode, then you'd want to create a new hi-def HDV project before importing..
If it's the wrong kind of project, it won't want to import..
(P.S: My various Sonys, standard and hi-def, are all recognised, in iMHD6 and in iM08. So it's not an innate problem with either the programs or the camcorders..)

  • DR8-A2 Disc Compatibility

    Hello,
I am very happy with DR8-A2. I have upgraded the firmware to 150D without any problems. Everything goes smooth but I have bought DVD-R blank labeled Proformance 8x. The problem is that the dvd cannot write to the disks with 8x but with 4x.
Is it possible to put in a new firmware and add in proformance dvd-r disks and also more dvd-r disks from other companies to work at 8x instead of 4x ?
    Thanks

What brand is the disk? Normally, for good brand it will work but not for cheap brand. Brands like sony, imation, philips etc. are good.
