Sony VX2000

I've used my Sony VX2000 with iMovie 2 for years with no problem, but now I've upgraded to iMovie 6. I've found that if I create a movie, export it to my Sony VX2000, and import it back, there are all kinds of problems. Some clips have no audio (even though I can hear it playing as it is imported). Other clips will freeze on a video frame (while continuing to play the audio), and I can't get the frame off my screen, even if I click on a different clip. And, it freezes on a video frame even if I just scroll the playhead without playing -- or if I export it to QuickTime.
This problem has occurred on several different projects (so I doubt that it is caused by corrupted media) and it has occurred after erasing and reinstalling the whole system, the software, etc.
Has anyone else had problems with similar cameras? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

How old is the cable? If it is pretty old I would try a new one.
I have a VX2000 myself but have not tried to export back to tape for some time. I will try and remember to try it tonight.

  • No video through Sony VX2000 via firewire FCS 2.0.1

    Hi,
I've been trying all day to pass video via firewire through a Sony VX2000 mini DV camera to a Sony NTSC monitor using the S-video out of the camera. I've tried multiple settings/different combinations, to no avail. At this point, I can't even get video to playback in preview mode on either computer monitor. I just installed a full version of FCS 2.0.1 a couple days ago. And, while I have your attention, any thoughts about using the AJA Io to pass video in and out of FC?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Just to follow up and close this out:
    - Kinivo's replacement had the same issue.
    - I daisy-chained another active device between the Apple TV and the Kinivo. This device splits the audio out from the HDMI into L/R channels, but it also maintains the EDID signal back to the Apple TV (as the Kinivo should, as well.)
In this configuration, video successfully made it to the TV through the Kinivo. My conclusion is that the Apple TV configuration did change something that affected part of the EDID handshake, which the Kinivo switch could no longer handle.
For you geeks out there, this phrase from an Extron white paper may help:
"Additionally, a display may handle a new input selection by switching only the TMDS or DDC lines from the previous source, but doing nothing with the HPD line. This can be a problem, because some sources wait for the HPD line to change state before sending video. In such cases, switching between inputs on a display can result in no viewable picture until the system is power-cycled."
For your additional reading pleasure, please see the following links:
    http://www.extron.com/download/files/whitepaper/edid_guide_wp.pdf
    http://missingremote.com/blog/experience-hdmi-handshake-issues
I'm now searching for a single active device that will handle these ambiguous areas within the HDMI standard. Hopefully it won't cost me a mint.
In the end, Kinivo could not solve the problem, so they refunded my money. The switcher was still within the 1-year warranty.

  • Sony VX2000 for Grand Canyon

    Hi Folks,
I am planning to go shoot Grand Canyon next month and my cameras are Sony vx2000 and PDX-10, I wonder these two cameras would work better than ok for granduer shots of nature. I want to make a very good picture for viewing pleasure of Grand Canyon but I've been debating myself with this camera issue.
If there's anyone who has the experience with same or similar camera for national Parks, please please drop a line for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • SHOOTING COMPATIBLE FOOTAGE WITH DIFFERENT CAMERAS SONY VX2000 & CANON H1

I have an event happening Saturday with footage being shot on several Sony DCR VX2000 cameras and a Canon H1. I am concerned about how to properly set up the cameras so the footage is compatible and will play well together in FCS2. We will be shooting in SD mode (4:3) but I am confused with 30i 60i and 29.97. My understanding is that the Sony shoots 30i at 29.97 fps but have read there is no such thing as 30i? I have read the Canon specs and they state 60i at 30 fps. Just want to get it right. Thanks.

Thanks David, I guess there is a 30i in some prosumer models like the VX2000. I read the manual and it speaks to the progressive frame mode taking a full frame every 1/15 of a second... from that I get 30 interlaced frames per second.
Can anyone offer suggestions for integrating 30i and 60i DV footage? Also, if a camera is in NTSC DV SD mode at 30i or 60i, will this be at 29.97 dropframe? One site states 30F another states that 30 is actually 29.97.
Will 30i and 60i footage work together in FCP2? What about 30F and 29.97?

  • Error Message: Sorry...serious error PRE 7 must shut down

PRE 7 was running well. In fact I edited four movies successfully.
But now whenever I attempt to Open Project or New Project I get the message:
    "Sorry...serious error encountered...must shut down.
It is really frustrating to pay for a product and then not have it work.
Any suggestions will be sincerely appreciated.

I am running Windows XP. (latest version).
The properties window for my drives says:
    C Drive
    Used Space 27.3 GB
    Free Space 205 GB
    Capacity 232 GB
    E (External Drive)
    Used Space 27.3 GB
    Free Space 205 GB
    Capacity 232 GB
    I use camcorder: Sony VX2000.
I have deleted all previously made (4) movies, hoping for a clean start and hoping that would help. It did not.
So now I don't even get a chance to load from the camecorder because when I click on New Project, I get the message: "Sorry..."
Since PRE 7 has worked in the past, I can only assume that somewhere in there I did something wrong to cause this problem.
Side note: I down loaded a tril version of PRE 8 to see if that would work. Same thing. I have since removed PRE 8.
I will most sincerely appreciate any help because I am a total computer dummie.
Note that I did update to the latest version of Quick  Time. Did not help.
I am so frustrated over this. I recently videoed a Puppet Show and gal is really on my case for the finished product.

  • Slow/Fast/Reverse DOES NOT WORK

I have read other posts on this issue. When I attempt to apply this effect, it does not work. This is a new project in iMovie HD 6. Clips will not take this effect. It shows up in the preview fine but will not apply. Below is what I sent Apple. Any and all help (solutions) appreciated. Is anyone else using this effect successfully in HD 6?
I select a clip (it is selected), click on the Editing tab, then click on the Video FX tab, and then select the fast/slow/reverse option. I am correctly using the slider to slow the clip down just one tick past the default position. The effect shows up in preview but will not apply. The red progress line (that indicates the effect is being rendered) shows up for about a tenth of a second and then stops. I am using the latest version of iMovie (6.0.3). I have a Dual 2 Ghz G5 Tower. I have 1.5 GB of ram. I am using OSX 10.4 8. All my software is up to date.
The camera I am using is a Sony VX2000. Never had a problem with iMovie 4 and 5. I have two internal drives. I have an external drive that is for backups only. All three are Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) format. The drive i am capturing to is the original drive that came with with my computer. It is 160 GB. 147 GB is free. I keep this drive clean and only for current projects.
I did have some plugins installed for iMovie from GeeThree. They are the updated versions for Intel and PowerPC running OSX 10.4.8. Again, all software is up to date. I did remove those plugins from the plugin folder. Also, I have ran Disk Utility and permissions are fine. I have not removed the preference files yet (plist) because I wasn't sure which ones to remove.
A third thing I did was to create a new project (after unstalling the plugins, restarting, using Disk Utility), reimport some footage and see if the slow/fast/reverse effect would work then. It did not work. I then saved all my current work and saved to tape. I NEED THIS EFFECT TO WORK! Please who can solve my problem? Dinner is on me!! LOL!

  • Final Cut Exporting to DVD Settings Help!

Hello, all. Hopefully someone can help me with this problem that I have been struggling with for weeks.
I shot a video project in standard definition on a Sony VX2000, then edited it in Final Cut Express. I am now wondering what the best export settings would be in order to put it onto a DVD, and maintain the quality at 100 percent. I've tried exporting it in several different ways, but no matter what I do, the quality is never as good as it was shot.
So, what should the export settings be from Final Cut? And do you think I need to use a different software to maintain perfect quality on a DVD?
    Thanks so much

  • NTSC External video flashes in FCP HD

    Hello all,
I have a Sony VX2000 connected to my G5 by firewire with an NTSC monitor connected to the A/V ports of the camera so I can watch the timeline play on a regular TV. The problem is that after I have been editing for about 30 minutes or so, the NTSC monitor starts flashing (Viewscreen on camera flashes also) and I loose the sound output from the camera. The canvas window on the computer monitor plays fine. I have 4 other systems (G4s & 5s) with this configuration and they all work fine. I have tried deleting all my preference folders, reinstalling FCP HD, wiping the hard drive clean and loading everything again, but none seems to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ronnie Aldrich

That's either a Firewire bus issue or a problem in your camera. I'm voting on the camera as the culprit but you imply you have used the same camera on the other systems successfully. Yes?
If so, you start testing the FW bus. You can really only do that by adding another FW bus with a PCI card.
DV inputs on cameras can go wonky and they appear to be supersenstivie. The slightest variation in the data stream can make them blank out. Especially troublesome with Canons, I hear.
Try the easy stuff before doing clean installs wipes.

  • IChatAv won't recognize my camera

I'm trying to set up iChat but it won't seem to see my camera (iMovie does). I just did a clean install of 10.3 and did all the updates to 10.3.9. My Quicktime is 7.0.1 and iChat is version 2.1. My camera is a Sony VX2000 and I have it turned on in camera mode. Running on a PowerMac G4. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much. -Julie

    HI Julie,
To certain extent a upgrade to Tiger would probably sort most minor problems with the way Panther was set up.
However iChat relies heavely on the settings within the OS and iChat to work properly.
    I would start here Gulliver, "kmosx3: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance", 06:15am Mar 27, 2004 CDT
Concentrate on the Routine Maintenance Tasks.
Then I would check the System Profiler > Firewire section to see if the camera is seen.
Then Check that in iChat >Preferences > Video section that the camera Microphone appears in the Microphone drop down. This will prove theat iChat can see the camera.
For the Quicktime issue, try this page of EZ Jim's http://ezjimfortestonly.blogspot.com/2005/07/help-for-ichat-av-3-problems.html
I would also delete the Quicktime Prefernces further down the list (it is best to view this folder in List View)
Have you got any Video add-ons as Quicktime plug-ins or additional input PCI cards ?
    Delicous Library ?
The change from TV to DV output from the camera may only be a menu item on the setup of the camera rather than a switch on the outside. (it might also be an auto selection when the cable is in use as you believe).
I would also open the Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) and see if anything is obvious there about any Video use in the background.

  • Video capture stops when connected to FCP using fire wire

Captured video using Sony VX2000 using 48 khz and 16 bit audio stereo mode. Using Sony Premium miniDV tapes.
Video plays back fine when not connected via firewire to G4 dual 867 with 2 GB Ram.
Using default capture preset of 48 khz 16 bit, connect fire wire and video capture randomly stops stating it has lost connection or is missing capture data. If I switch to just plain capture using non controllable device, I have the same issue except the tape keeps playing but FCP stops capturing.
Tried other tapes and no problem.
Tried other fire wire cable and no problem.
I am having problems only on this tape and when connected.
When not connected it plays back on the camera with no stopping.
    Steve Bowers

    To answer your questions--
Dumping preferences usually does not cause problems. More likely you updated some part of your system or are having other hardware issues.
No updates or hardware issues. The original problem (discussed in another thread) was one where the video is skewed inward on the lower right corner. Apple instructed me to dump the preferences and start from scratch. That I did and now I am experiencing problems I did not have before. If it is hardware problems, then I guess it is just coincidental that FCP is just now presenting problems. However, the other problems I am having are software related and does not involve the camera.
What software versions of FCP, OSX and QT are you running and have you updated any of them recently?
    FCP version-5.1.2
    OSX-10.4.8
    QT-7.1.3
Is there anything special about the 'difficult' tape?
    No.
    Did you record it?
    Yes
Was it the last of a bunch?
Not sure. I buy bulk so this was one in a box of 5 that is was in a case of 50 boxes.
Are you using the same camera as the playback device?
    Yes
Does it work if you use another computer?
Not sure what you mean. I have only one MAC G4.
Was it recorded using another camera in a non-DV format?
No. Playback is through same camera is was recorded on.

  • How can I capture video directly into FCP without recording to tape first?

I hooked my Sony VX2000 to the computer via firewire and opened the Log and Capture dialog box. The video from my camera shows correctly in the preview window.
I click the Capture Now button and the capture window opens but no video displayed. The message below the window says "Waiting for Timecode".
I guess the camera doesn't send timecode when it's not recording so I press the record button. Now video shows up in the capture window. After 16 frames it freezes and an error box pops up that says "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully."
Foiled again! This has been a problem from time to time when I want to capture video from a source that does not supply timecode.
Is there any settings I can change to capture video directly from a camera using FCP without having to record it to tape in one step and then capture it in a second step?
    Thanks,
    Rob:-]
    FCP 5.1.2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Dual 1.8GHz Power PC G5, 3GB ram

I thought I had tried that. Thanks, that was the answer.
I am aware of the danger of not having tape backup. Having worked with the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 it is a chore to free up the P2 cards fast enough to keep from starving the camera crew. Copying the P2 contents to a single hard drive is the practice but leaves the whole shoot at the mercy of a single point of failure.
As far as my capturing directly to HD, it isn't a problem for short podcasts that could be recreated quickly if lost. Also, I can still record to tape in the camera but avoid the second step of capture when I'm in my edit bay anyway.
    Peace,
    Rob:-]

  • Hiss. How to go about it the right way?

    Hey all:
The project is a short film we shot on a Sony VX2000 with the camera as the sound recorder. There are two scenes with quite an unacceptable level of hiss.
The mic (Audio-Technica shotgun, AT835) was plugged into a mixer and came out left-channel only. We had the camera recording a mono signal. I mention this only so that you know everything - I don't think it is a contributing factor to the problem as most of the location sound came out fine.
Thing is, ST's Noise Removal isn't really having an effect on it. Same with the Parametric EQ. I understand that sound cleanup is all about compromise and lesser evils, but I'm really not seeing any results beyond the extremes of no change and supremely distorted audio.
I'm not audio man, it's a meager project, trying to get our feet wet. ADR and a reshoot is possible (albeit in a few month's time), so I just want to know if the audio is beyond saving or whether I'm just failing. If anyone with more experience would be willing to recieve a sample of the problem and advise me further.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Michael

can you isolate a section of the footage that has ONLY the hiss? if so, you should be able to set that as your Noise Print and then perform a removal. if that doesn't cut it you may have to roll up your sleeves and use some parametric EQ.

  • Recording screen display to Camcorder

I have a MacPro with the ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB (2 dual-link DVI).
I connected one DVI plug to my Cinema display and the second plug to my Sony VX2000 Camera using a S-Video connection and S-Video to DVI converter.
I want to use Safari to view the news in full screen display on my camcorder, like I used to do with a PC (a Dell Portable PC with a S-Video output plug linked to a second video screen) and I got a full screen display of the Media-Player windoes of the movie.
I tried practically all the display settings with various resolutions and I cant have any pictures in my camera. The onlu thing I have is the background picture and sometimes part of the full Safari screen display.
Can someone advise me if I can do with my MacPro what I used to do with my PC?

Proabably the simplest is to turn in display mirroring in the Displays System Preference. It will most likely reduce the resolution of your main display though.

  • Dark Images Problem

We video with 3 Sony VX2000 Cameras, input to a Panasonic MX30 mixer and record the output with a Sony TRV 950. We then export the recorded tape to iMovie 6. Our problem is the imported clips appear dark. The images from the shooting cameras, from the recording camera and from the mixer output look fine. The problem appears to be in iMovie 6 resulting in too dark "shared" images (output of edited program back to camera or DVD). Anybody have any clues as to what I should do to correct this (brightening the individual clips not really an option as we're doing 1 hr programs)?

    Hi
Really. There is no other solution than adjusting brightness and contrast in iMovie HD 6.
In this case I would concider FinalCut and if the three Cameras are recording
continually (without any break) during the 1 hour up-take.
Then I would look into FinalCut Studio Pro 2 where MultiCamera editing is standard.
    If not.
FinalCut Express where correcting picture quality is a dream compared to iMovie.
You make one correction then drop this on the rest of the clips or the whole sequence. (It's imported as a full sequence then can be split into clips)
There are no "set picture correction" that then can be copied over to the rest
of the clips in iMovie as standard. If there is such a plug-in is out of my knowledge.
    Try though.
