Soo much trouble setting up NIS (and if possible AutoFS)
Hi,
I have recently started a company, and run an office with 4 workstations running ArchLinux and a server running Debian (Wheezy).
Ultimately I want this out of the network:
1. Centralised user accounts
2. Centralised home directories (mounted over network)
3. All users should be able to FTP in to the server externally, and reach all the files in their home directory.
As of now I will be happy just to get NIS working. The homedirectories i can sync over the network with Rsync and then easily share via FTP with VSFTP. So far, I have followed these guides:

NIS Problems:
1. I cant get change passwords. If I run yppasswd on a client, I will get "segmentation fault (core dumped)". Somewhere I read that if you only have one master server, no slaves, you can only change passwords in the server. I tried using yppasswd locally, but that just results in "NIS not being able to change password"
2. I want to have a seperate passwd and shadow file for NIS, so I was thinking of putting them in /var/yp/etc/, but will login through FTP work?
General questions:
1. Is it completely retarded of me to think i can get this working running ArchLinux clients? If so, what do you guys recommend?
Please. I'm running on 12 hours with this shit now and I just find more and more errors. I need help.
Set up another box running ArchLinux just to see if i could get it running...
Followed the wiki on NIS, but I cannot start ypbind. I have up to starting the daemons, without problem. The make command runs fine, but i cannot start the goddamn ypbind daemon. Running systemctl status ypbind gives me.

I have 2 macs hooked up on a verizon wireless network. Got a new mac mini with Lion when my "old" Imac Intel core dou with tiger stopped working. However I had it repaired and now have both sharing the same wireless network. Since the old Mac was online previously it is set now as the administrator. Once you get access to the public folder, you can drag aliases to the other folders to the public folder.
command + l will make an alias you can then drag.
Is there a reason the one is still at 10.4.3?
What bdaqua means is that you may consider upgrading to 10.4.11. Of course, there was some bug in 10.4.11 that may require you to reconfigure your wireless access. Just a hassles, wireless works fine in 10.4.11.

I've had good luck with pureFTP for data transfer when the hassles of Mac OS got in the way of data transfer.
You could use FTP.

Try:
PureFTPd Manager. Free. Is the server. It runs on your home computer. I found PureFTP easier to use than the Apple solution in Tiger. The apple solution could have changed.
You would have to contend with these issues:
Enable your Mac firewall to pass ftp traffic.
Do you have a local router? Enable it's firewall. Tell it to pass ftp data to your home mac.
Verify that your isp lets you run an ftp server on your home mac.

Having trouble setting the look and feel
hi, i've almost finished my app and am trying to improve it's appearance. I'm trying to change the look and feel but i can't seem to get any changes to take effect. i've been reading through the tutorial on L&F but obviously am not 'getting' something.
At the moment all I'm trying to do, is to add the line below. I'm not totally sure where to put it though. I've tried putting it in the main method and nothing happens. I've also tried putting i the CreateandShowGUI() method and that doesn't seem to do anything either.
Where should it go?

Basic troubelshooting steps have not changed in iOS 7. Restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.

I have a 19 digit code that i had to scratch to get, a 30 digit number under the bar code, and a 6 digit authorization code that seems to be completely pointless. I started off putting in the 19 digit code with all my other information, but it wanted 24. so I filled in the rest with zeros. I am having trouble setting up my time capsule. the amber light is flashing. i have a Verizon FIOS network that i use for the internet (WiFi) and do not want to configure the Time Capsule to do that function. I just want the Time Capsule to back up.
Simple.. bridge the TC.. in the apple utility in the NAT and DHCP area.
Plug it into the FIOS router.. you can turn off wireless in the TC if you want.. or use it.. it can work faster if you are nearby and can select 5ghz.. but up to you. -
I am having trouble setting up my Yahoo! e-mail account on my phone...it asks for my Password and I type it in carefully and correctly, but I get an error window, "MF Message Error Domain error 1032" -what does this mean and how can I get around it? My password is long and convoluted, but it works when I type it in on my main Mac workstation, just fine.....what gives?

I have an email account through yahoo. I am having trouble setting it upon my iPhone and can't receive or send emails!!!! I contacted Rogers and they said I need to find out the host name of the incoming server, in other words yahoos host name. Help!!
Yahoo's servers are notoriously unreliable. Use the "Yahoo" account type when setting it up. If it doesn't work, and you are positive the credentials are correct, wait a while and try again.
While you're waiting, set up a free gmail or iCloud email account. -
I need to organize medical photos. They are pre-op and post-op photos. What is the best way to organize them? should I use iphoto or is that too much trouble? Since they occur on different days, organizing by event does not seem appropriate. Also, organizing by face is not always possible as some are close up photos of an individual eye. Surely, this has been done before, and I don't want to spin my wheels reinventing this.
Who can tell with that amount of information to work with?
iPhoto is not limited to Events or Faces as organizational tools - Albums, Keywords, various forms of metadata can be leveraged for use as well, and these are often more flexible. Really it's up to you to look at the tools available and see if they suit your usage scenario. -
I am having trouble setting up icloud on MAC. In system preference it is listed as mobile me, it asks for member name and password. It also has a learn more button under "try mobileme for free". I am not getting anywhere
It's evident that you are using Snow Leopard or earlier (or very early Lion) since you have the now obsolete MobileMe preference pane.
The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are:
OS X v10.6.8 or later
2GB of memory
8GB of available space
and the supported models are:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)

If you are running Leopard on an Intel Mac you will have to upgrade to Snow Leopard to access the Mac App Store - it's available in the online Apple Store. However if you have a PPC Mac you cannot run Snow Leopard and cannot proceed further. -
