Soon as I log in the finder hangs up
I just got a new HD at Apple Store Sunday. Now the mac is hanging up as soon as I log in. The finder shows BBOD and the dock is permanently showing instead of hiding at bottom. Not sure what to do at this point. Just rebooted and logged in at 2nd log in and same thing. Any ideas what to do?
I can log in normally. When I do, finder hangs immediately. With peripherals attached (speakers, ethernet cable, etc) I cannot boot into safe mode. With everything disconnected, I can boot into safe mode. Regardless of how I log in, finder hangs within a few seconds as soon as I select a file. The dock is stuck in the up position. Reinstalling the OS (command-R) did not clear up this problem. I'm hesitant to wipe down the disk since I just got the new HD on Sunday and it took me all week to get it 80% operational. Now it starts okay but if I select an app it takes about 5 minutes of the beach ball before I can double click it open. Then it's 5 minutes for the click to actually force the machine to start the app. If I select a file, it's five minutes before I can double click it open. Even though I have several print drivers install, I always get a prompt that I don't have any print drivers installed.

It is not reassuring when the Finder hangs
Hello,
Recently my iMac started occasionally hanging when I switched to the Finder. It's been once or twice a day. Sometime it will come back after a few minutes. But sometimes I have to relaunch, and I hate having to do that, it makes me feel like the mac is 'unclean' somehow after that and I usually restart the machine.
I just wanted to know if this is a known issue with 10.8.2, hopefully being fixed in 10.8.3? Or is it more likely my machine? I found some stuff online about finding and removing invalid kernel extensions, and I did that. But the issue still persists after many weeks.
Thanks for any suggestions,
BobNavigate to the /Home/Library/Prefernces/ folder. Locate and delete the com.apple.finder.plist file. Relaunch the Finder. See if that helps.

Finder Hanging On Startup, Restart
This just started several days ago; the Finder hangs after a normal startup. After say, three minutes, everything finishes loading to my desktop and system operation is normal, other than the HD seems to perhaps be running too much.
Here is my console log, parsed to only include events since my last shutdown. Help is appreciated.

Finder hangs for 10 seconds - icons dissapear on second screen
Hi, I just did a clean install of Lion and did all my software updates so that brings me up to 10.7.2.
Re installed all my software as usual. I had a problem that made the Finder hang. Tried to find the bug but couldn't, so what I did is rename the current user, and create another user account with the name I usally use. Logged in to that new one, and the problem went away.
I copied some stuff over from the old account to the new one. While doing so I realized by clicking in the "buggy account's" desktop folder, it made my finder crash again. So I deleted that account to make sure not to get those problems back.
Since then, my Finder doesn't actually crash but it hangs from time to time for about 10 seconds. While it hangs, My files on my second's screen desktop dissapear. (JPG's PDF files icons dissapear). All other apps are OK.
It's kinda annoying.... Is there a way to log what is going on? I can't seem to find anything at that precise time in the Console.
Is there a pref file I can trash that is affecting me second screen?
Or, is my iMac trying to detect the second screen become unresponsive?
Really weird, please help! You might try resetting Finder prefs...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.) -
Finder Hangs Crashes and Burns in Lion: Steps to FIX
Issue Description:
Since installing OSX Lion the Finder hangs, entire system becomes unresponsive, cannot force Finder to relaunch and osx must be forced to restart.
Occurred intermittently, usually when executing searches via Finder or Spotlight, or when moving files between folders.
History of FAILED steps taken to fix issue (via Apple Support):
SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964)
PRAM reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
Clear User and System Caches
Cleared Login Items for User Profile
Ran Apple Hardware Test (3 hours, more info http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509)
Reinstall Lion via Recovery Partition method (Control + R, ie not a clean install of Lion)
The above was included in case you’re dealing with same issue and troubleshooting wondering what the **** to try next. Or if you plan on calling Apple Support it will give you some idea of what might be planned (and averted).

Finder hangs when HD is opened/Attempts to connect to Network Server
We have two iMac G3s running 10.3.9.
The computers are connected to a Dlink ethernet router.
One of the computers will occasionally hang either when booting or when we double click on the hard drive. It appears to be trying to connecting to the other networked computer. We get the spinning beach ball plus an empty window.
While it's hanging, other applications can be opened from the dock and seem to be functioning normally.
If the ethernet cable is unplugged, the system will start normally.
One guess was that an alias to files on the other had been added to the sidebar and that the computer was trying to resolve this when the HD was opened. I saw this mentioned in a different Mac forum. Is this a problem? Is there a way to see why the one machine is trying to connect to the other?
What I've tried so far:
Disk Utility (Repair Permission/Verify Disk)
Disk Warrior 3.03 (Rebuild the directory
Removing the plist (I got a login window that then wouldn't allow typing the password.)
Cocktail
Suggestions?
iMac G3 Mac OS X (10.3.9)I agree that it is very annoying, but in my experience the Finder hang does eventually resolve itself if you wait long enough.
Not being that patient, I usually relaunch the Finder from the Dock, which clears the hang immediately. -
Finder hangs (and "UserActivityAgent") after install
I installed Leopard with no issues (until I rebooted). Now, I have nothing on my desktop, and the finder will not run. I can open apps from the Dock, but I can't even open folders from the dock.
I let Spotlight finish indexing, and then used it to get to the Activity Monitor. Finder and something called UserActivityAgent are listed as "Not Responding". Killing and restarting them does not help. I've rebooted my iMac 5 times, but no luck. Each time the Finder hangs on startup. Any ideas?Lawson Culver wrote:

I am having the exact same issue. From what I have read though, we have to re-install with the archive and install option. Try that, I am going to and will be back in a couple of hours with updates. -
Finder hanging - can anyone help?
I am running Lion on my MacBook. Working with an old and new external seagate hard drives. The finder is hanging and I have to restart the computer to do anything with the finder. All other programs still work while the finder hangs. If I try the force quit/ relaunch option - the finder never restarts unless I reboot. I have included the latest console message below.
I would appreciate any help.

Professional graphic designer here. I "upgraded" to Mavericks last week, and many times throughout the day, the finder hangs when I try and open new files. For instance, when I click "open" from any application, finder window opens in column view (my preferred view) and I click one of the drives or folders on the left. I have one alias for a folder marked "clients" and inside that are my current client files. But nothing happens to the right in the columns, I just get a spinning icon in the lower left corner of the finder window. After 15-30 seconds of this, the files appear and I move on. But before I upgraded, finder was instant...no hangs ever, so this is a really annoying slowdown of my workflow.
Try the following. Select (triple-click to select the entire line), then control-click and from the contextual menu, select Services > Reveal in Finder:
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.savedState
Drag the selected folder to the Desktop.
Re-launch the Finder by following the instructions here: Mac OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Determine if that results in any change. -
MacBoor Air is now hanging with various applications, including the Finder
Hi Everyone,
My 2011 MacBook Air is now hanging rather frequently, regardless of program. Any suggestions? The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
When I go to my downloads folder on my dock and click the file all the content shows up but as soon as I go to open it in the finder, I get a blank window. Has anyone else had this problem, if so, How do you fix it. I also cant delete anything from this folder because of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking at the "Find my iPhone" app and I have a doubt regarding how it works for the macbook. In order to detect the location, the macbook should remain signed into iCloud. What if the person who has stolen my macbook logs out of iCloud.
It should work fine for iPhone/iPad because we can enable "Restrictions" to prevent the user from signing out of iCloud. Do we have simialr settings for the macbook?
Thanks,If it's not on the device list, it indicates that someone has gone to Find My iPhone on icloud.com and manually deleted it from the device list (as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0eeddd), and it has not gone back online since (which would cause it to reappear on the device list; Find My iPhone has been turned of in settings on the device; the iClolud account has been deleted from the device; or the entire devices has been erased and restored.
Unfortunately, there's no other way to track the phone other than through Find My iPhone. You could call your carrier and see if they would blackliste it so at least the theif couldn't use it. -
I have lost my iphone 4s and want to use find my iphone app on my boyfriends iphone 3s to delete the info on my now lost phone. Do i need to log out of his icloud inorder to log into mine to do this on his phone?
You need to use the Find My iPhone app (in the itunes store - free). When invoking it on a device, you enter the ID password of the account the lost device is connected to. You can also use a computer's browser and log into icloud.com.
