Soon to lose my Apple virginity...

Hi there, I have been reading the threads on here a lot recently when deciding whether or not to buy a new Macbook here in the UK.
I have gathered from all the discussions that i would financially be better off getting the 512mb 2.0Ghz model and upgrading the RAM and HD myself.
I know that on their site Apple need to up-sell their products so i was after some honest advice from you guys.
I think i am going to go with 2GB of RAM as i have plans for a fair bit of DVD authoring and Garage Band using, but am not sure how much HD i will need to be getting and indeed how easy both the RAM and HD are to fit myself in the comfort of my own kitchen!!
Apologies if I am going over poibts already raised, but having researched, this DIY method could save me afair whack, i just want to make sure i'm making the right decsions!!!

Sorry - can't help you with the Hard Drive, but RAM:
Best prices for UK found on the forums (by me)
2 x 512mb - if you only intend to go to 1GB:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/productinfo.asp?WebProductID=202604
1 x 1GB, if you use that and one that comes with the MacBook, so you have 1.25GB, and upgrade later on:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=353418
Best to have them in pairs, but having 1.25GB unmatched pairs will come to more than 2 x 512mb
hope this helps!

Can I turn my soon to be old Apple TV into a wireless hard drive???

Exactly. That's my question? There's a 40gb hard drive about to be tossed if I were to purchase the new Apple TV. I assume there are features the new one will have that old does not...?
Either way still a good question because there is a 40gb hard drive that has just been sitting there unused. It would nice if it could be used as a data storage device.
Currently I just stream content thru the Apple TV or rent movies directly from the ATV (not at the computer and then wait for them to transfer to the hard drive)

  • When purchasing an iPhone5, will I get it sooner if shipped from Apple or from my cell provider (AT

The iPhone5 is not available at any retail stores (Apple or AT&T).  Thus, I have to order it online.  Will I get it sooner if ordered through the Apple website or through my account at AT&T?

    Hello,
I did buy an iPhone 5 from Singapore and am using it in India. Of what I have read across the web, the warranty is not valid here. If you have any other information. Kindly let me know.

  • IPad smart cover loses coating Apple does't replace

Hi, I have the iPad 3 with the original smart cover since 4month. I called Apple Hotline because of issues with the coating on the cover. The aluminum part of the cover looks crappy because it is loosing the coaing.
You can see the pictures... The hotline said, about one month ago, I should bring it to an apple store. So I did today, but the guy there just said. No warranty, so I should buy a new one. This made me very upset and angry!!!
I actually want to complain about this guy, how unfriendly and unpolite he was. Till today I thought Apple is concerned about customer satisfaction, maybe not anymore.
So waht would be your suggestions, how should I deal with this situation?
    thx. dominik

There's something going on here you're not telling us. That looks like it came into contact with something corrosive, not normal wear. The covers are not covered by any warranty. Live with it or buy a new one.

  • Ibook- G4 Questions. Apple Virgin

I recently acquired an ibook G4 from a friend and am using it as a secondary computer when I am not home. I don't really know much about apple and could really use some help. I was wondering if the OS can be updated above the current 10.4.11 I am currently running as well as the most recent Java and Flash players for this unit. I've looked online, and not knowing alot of the apple lingo I need someone to guide me in the right direction. The processor is Power PC g4 Thanks!!!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The most recent Java update should be available through Software Update. Click on the Apple logo at the top left of the display and select Software Update. It will find whatever updates Apple recommends for the iBook. This should include any necessary Java updates.
As far as an OS update, here is a link to the system requirements for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759?viewlocale=en_US
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
The information gleaned from that list will also tell you quite a bit about the iBook.
Again, go to the Apple logo, click on "About This Mac" and it will tell you the information about the processor speed and how much RAM is installed. Click on "More Info" and you will be taken to the System Profiler where you can find out information about the hard drive, the optical drive, and other components.

  • New Airport Express: iMac loses printer, apple Tv connectivity

I just replaced my netgear router with a Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (late 09).
My set up is as follows:
    iMac 24" wireless to AEBS
Printer and harddrive connected via USB hub to AEBS
Apple TV connected to AEBS (via power extender)
Airport Express connected to AEBS (via power extender)
Slingbox connected to AEBS (via power extender)
I use Airport Utility 5.5 that came with the AEBS.
After a while, I can no longer print to the AEBS connected printer. When I then check my system, I also have lost the Apple TV in iTunes. I no longer see the AEBS in the Airport Utility. Also, the symbol for AEBS in the Finder (under shared) has changed from the AEBS icon to the generic server icon. I can also no longer see the AE in the Airport Utility.
Despite losing all the Apple devices, Time Machine still backs up to the hard drive that is connected to the AEBS, wireless internet still works, and I can still connect to the slingbox (but not to Apple TV).
The only solution is to restart the iMac, or restart the AEBS.
The whole set up worked perfectly with the Netgear (including wireless printing using AE). The only reason I bought the AEBS was to get the back up facility linked to the router, as well as better range.
I must say the experience has been disappointing so far.

Hmm I don't know actually, maybe if that happens by default, because I don't know what that is.
As to the neighbouring networks, I wouldn't think so? No other networks, not even my own primary network, appear in the Wi-Fi list on my MBP. It's in the room just next to the room where the Apple TV and Airport Express are. That room is even further away from my main Access Point on my middle floor than the room where my MBP is.

  • I lost my yahoo id and after lose my apple account automatically disabled why?

I lost my yahoo id( permanent deledted by yahoo cause of inactivity) because i did make that id just for apple id  and after lost my apple account automatically disabled why? cause of disable apple account my ip5 is not activating with io7 , because i was using with icloud.

Firstly, if you have 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' enabled on any of your devices, turn it off.
Create a new email address at Yahoo or Gmail. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and click 'Manage your Apple ID'. Sign in with the current Yahoo ID.
Where it says 'Apple ID and primary email address' and gives your Yahoo email, click 'edit'.
Enter your new address and click 'Save changes'.
Now you will need to go to each of your devices and sign out in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud - 'Sign out' on a Mac, 'Delete this account' on an iOS device (this will not delete the account from the server).
Then sign back in with your new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear from your devices when you sign out, but reappear when you sign back in.
I re-iterate: before you start, turn off 'Find My Mac' (or whatever) or you will need the services of Support.

  • Apple virgin and excited!

So, after using PCs for the best part of 20 years, I finally took the plunge, specced myself a Macbook and waiting for its imminent arrival.
I really fell in love with apple after getting the iphone 3G which is an amazing piece of kit.
I am fairly daunted by the prospect of trying to ship over all my pc files for which I have a portable hard drive at the ready....
Any starting up tips, tricks or anything advice for a newbie like me for the day when the machine arrives?
I was slightly concerned by the problems some have reported picking up wireless signals, I use BT broadband, is there anything I should expect, or anything I should do to make sure I have no broadband problems?
Fingers crossed, and I await my new Mac with baited breath.

Congrats and welcome to Apple Discussions...
You love your iPhone now... check this out. It's called, "Bump Technology"... you just bump two iPhones together and it syncs your Address Books. I saw it on a show here called, "Tech Now". Pretty amazing stuff. http://www.bumptechnologies.com/products.phtml
As for the MacBook and Bluetooth broadband. I used to use Verizon Bluetooth with one of my Mac laptops (away from home) and other than being a tad slower than hi-speed broadband, I never had any problems. Some Bluetooth devices are automatically detected and there's no set up but since this is an internet connection, just follow the instructions for your Bluetooth broadband. You can always come here and ask for assistance.

  • HT202157 i lose my apple tv remote. what should i do?

What should I do? I lost my apple tv remote.h

Go by a new one.  They sell them separately from the apple tv.  Or if you have an iphone, ipod touch, ipad, you can download the "Remote" app and use that to control your Apple TV over wifi.  I use it all the time when my daughter is watching her tv shows.

  • Did I lose an Apple Loop?

Sorry if this is bit trivial:
I was messing around with LE this morning, and was setting up a bassline using 'Walking Upright Bass.' I think that Walking Upright Bass 3 was there, but now it isn't.
Could someone please confirm or deny the existence of 'Walking Upright Bass 3' and, if it does exist, please explain to me how to get it back?
    Thanks in advance!
    Glenn
PS, the loop in question doesn't show up in Garageband, either.
    17" 2 GHZ Core 2 Duo iMac 2 gigs RAM Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Okely dokely. From a quick run-through of the loops, I think that is the only one that isn't completely in sequence. Could be wrong, but....
    Thanks for your reply!

  • HT1725 My Visa account keeps getting declined at Apple.I used this very same Visa card on Amazon with no problem. I checked my status for the card and it is still all good. Please let me know as soon as possible

My Visa account keeps getting declined at Apple. I used this very same Visa card on Amazon with no problem. I checked my status for the card and it is still all good. My friends and I buy a lots of Apple applications on iTune.
We have the correct CVV2, Expiration Date and Billing address, but you keeps declining us. Please fix this problem for me. The issuing bank for this card is Eximbank, one of the largest banks in Vietnam. According to the bank, the transaction is processed in the US. This is a legitimate Visa card.
Please let me know as soon as possible. Apple does a disservice to its brand name by declining legitimate Visa account holders from using the cards in Vietnam.
    Sincerely,
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here - I've asked the hosts to remove your credit card number from your post as these are public forums (you should consider getting a new card from your provider as you've posted it here).
Your card is registered to exactly the same address (spacing and format) as is on your iTunes account ?You can contact iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption

  • To Apple:  SERIOUS FLAW:  Same Pix Download for each Sync of Anything

Even though I synced my iPhoto Library, when I told the system to do another sync (to get rid of some Movies I deleted), it starting downloading the SAME IPHOTO pictures that were already on the computer. I stopped it.
    This is crazy.
That would mean that it will download 2775 pictures EVERY TIME the system syncs. That's NUTS! It takes HOURS each time.
Obviously, in the next version of the SW, the system must check to see that the items already exist and do NOT require another download, especially when we are talking about thousands of pictures.
I suspect Version 1.1 will be coming out very soon and the fine Apple engineers will be working hard and through the night this weekend with the next release.
Thanks to them. It's fun being one of the first users and hopefully debugging the software early so new buyers have a better experience.

I don't think so Rob, since I've now actually witnessed this behavior... But as an aside, contrary to some who describe this as an "error", I disagree. It may be a functional spec you disagree with, it may be very bad "best practices" for some of us with large libraries, but it's not an error. It doesn't have an error code, or cause the Apple tv to crash or become inoperative, require a power cycle or reset. I perceive that it just wastes sync time, but it may yet have logic to it which is unknown to me a this point... ;-(
Anyway, I have seen what was described when I purchased a couple of new movies. For reasons I can't currently identify, it did resync all my photos. In my case only 500 some. This is not much of an issue in my case, since I have the fastest interconnect. But it certainly seems suboptimal, and arguably problematic, or even, "come back tomorrow" for those with thousands of photos and a slow link... Of course, the question is, what tells it that it needs to refresh photos (or whatever in other cases)?
For now, it is a mystery waiting to be solved...

  • IPhone Remote Won't Stay Connected to Apple TV

I have an apple tv, iphone 3gs and ipod touch first gen.
I am having many issues using either the ipod or iphone as the remote.
When I have connected to the the apple tv itunes library with the iphone's remote app it works fine. But as soon as either the apple tv or iphone fall asleep, turn off or disconnect they lose each other. I then cannot re-connect to the apple tv's itunes library. I am still able to connect to another itunes library but not the apple tv.
The only way I can manage to connect to the apple tv library with the iphone again is by resetting both devices and unpairing them. Then I am able to put the four digit code in again, works fine untill it goes to sleep. A big circle!
I have installed the app on my first gen ipod touch, however the app just won't open. I have purchased the 3.0 software for the touch, but the app doesn't work on it.
I am very much at a loss.
I would appreciate any help or tips. I have tried opening the two ports apple suggests opening. However that does not help.
    Thanks,
    Syd

I too have the same issue. I could connect to either iTunes or Apple TV, but as soon as I got out of one or the other I could never get it to connect to the library. I spent hours messing with my router, and nothing worked.
I did notice that my iPod Touch (which is running 3.0 firmware) had no problems at all connecting to either libraries. So I knew it wasn't a firewall issue.
The only think I found to work (and was the easiest workaround) was to go on the iPhone Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Wi-Fi for about 10 seconds. After turning it back on and the phone reconnected to the Wi-Fi network, I could immediately connect to Apple TV or iTunes. But as soon as I got out, the problem happened again.
I definitelly think there is some TCP/IP bug in the software that isn't meshing with the iPhone 3.1.2 firmware.
    I hope this helps.
