Sophos causing widespread system disruptions

Hi all,
I've recently rebuilt my system and thought that I'd voice my experiences in the hope in finding some answers.. Particularly pertaining to the Sophos antivirus application. Along with many other I feel that the presence of an antivirus on an OS X system is becoming increasingly necessary in today's virus/malware filled world.. As rare as they are, in my professional career I have encountered several instances where systems were compromised as a result of such infections. I'm aware there's several similar applications available; Avira, F-Secure, Kaspersky, E-SET Ctber Security Pro. I simply started using Sophos a while back and up until recently have had no reason to consider anything else.
Some basic info, I'm running my system off a 2010 MBP with 8GB RAM and 2.66GHz i7 processor. It's laregely used as a platform for video editing and audio recording wih your typical editing and recording applications.
My first problem was encountered whilst attempting to install the Native Instruments Komplete 9 Ultimate package. Under other systems running 10.6.8 and 10.8 (with Sophos running) the drive would mount and the installer open without a hitch. However in 10.9 upon mounting the drive and launching the .mpkg the installer would immediately go into not respoding and stay so regardless of how long I left it (I tried over an hour). No prompts would open nor any windows, simply Installer appication would simply sit idly in the dock. I thought I'd mention that at this point I had installed a bunch of other software on the system build and had not encountered any such issues.
I went through all your ususal work arounds, from reboot in safe mode to fixing permissions, copying the contents of the HDD locally (ruling out any problems with the drive provided by NI), went through troubleshooting with Native Instruments Tech Support as well as the place I bought the product from and it wasn't until I had rebuilt the system twice ( gahh! >.<) that I realised that it was only after I had installed Sophos that the drive would refuse to install.
Second of all, being an avid user of the various Kontakt libraries and samplers available I have also noticed that samples take FAR longer to load and initialise and open while Sophos is activated on the system. I'm assuming that can be attributed to the on-access scanner going through and checking each file.. but I may be wrong. This is irrespective of whether Kontakt is loaded as a stand-alone application, or in a host (namely logic 7 and logic X).
I realise I may not necesasrily be able to get any conrete answers but I'd appreciate hearing any ideas or even similar experiences you might have.. even if only to satisfy my own paranoia haha.
Thanks in advance!

Along with many other I feel that the presence of an antivirus on an OS X system is becoming increasingly necessary in today's virus/malware filled world..
What you and many others may feel is not relevant, and the assumption that an antivirus on an OS X system is not already implemented in OS X is an incorrect one that has led many users down a path of abject misery. The vast majority of Mac problems reported on this site are the direct result of acting upon feelings or reliance upon myth.
Sophos has been a problem with Mavericks. I have personally tested all the products you mentioned on a brand new Mac running Mavericks and determined all of them to be worthless, at best. Developers have had the better part of a year to adapt their software for Mavericks compatibility. If Sophos couldn't get theirs ready in that amount of time, how well do you suppose they will react to legitimate malware threats that could arise at any moment - threats that are specifically designed to act in an insidious manner and are difficult to eradicate?
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better strategy for protecting your Mac is to observe the following simple principles, most of which apply equally well to any computing platform:
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

Version 8 was a bit unstable upon release anyway. Have you downloaded the patch for it?
Meantime, can you please give us more information? Can you be more specific about the crash? Does it literally cause your computer to shut down and reboot?
At what point does it crash? As soon as you start it, or after you've added media to it? If the latter, what model of camdorder is this video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What operating system are you using? Have you manually gone to Windows Update and installed the non-critical or optional updates that do not install automatically?
How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is on your hard drive(s)? Remember that even brand new computers are a mess of junk files and defragmentation.

  • Fonts causing major system lag

Some of my fonts are causing my system to get bogged down. (one i downloaded in particular called "City Burn"). I haven't used the font much before (like once on OS 10.5), but now I will be using it all the time in 10.6. I don't recall it lagging in 10.5 the few times i used it, but now in 10.6, it causes so much lag that my presentation software (ProPresenter) can't even transition nicely with it... Photoshop have major lag with it too (though that is less of a problem since i don't use photoshop live ever, so i can deal with the lag)
How do I make my font not cause lag? HELP!

But would that explain why it didn't lag in 10.5, but does in 10.6?
Snow Leopard was essentially a complete rewrite of the OS as 64 bit. This includes the type engine, which still has some glitches. So SL may have problems handling the font that Leopard had no apparent trouble with.
and would RAM errors cause the processor to be running at full?
Yes. Just as a corrupt application can, a bad font (fonts are actually small programs) can cause buffer overflows into RAM that is not assigned to it.
If you have performance issues when just that one font is active, and everything returns to normal when you turn it off, then the font is most definitely bad and shouldn't be used.
    Edit: Is this same font?
    http://www.dafont.com/city-burn.font
If so, that is one BAD font. About a billion points, many overlapping. Ditch it.

  • High CPU usage caused by system interrupts [Satellite L50-B-1DG]

Just installed 64bit versions of windows 8.1 & windows 7 on a brand new Satellite L50-B-1DG, and literally without any programs installed, the CPU usage does not fall below 45%.
The windows 8.1 task manager suggests this is caused by system interrupts, so I tried the following without any luck:
    1. installed latest version of all drivers
    2. disabled all devices one by one to trace the root of the interrupts
    3. used latencymon to trace the driver behind the DPCs, and while the program suggests that it is caused by aspi, again I cannot trace which device causes the interrupts (I have already disabled them all)
    4. re-installed windows 8.1/7 multiple times, no difference
So, is this normal? Is this caused by faulty hardware? People with same models notice anything similar?
    Cheers

  • Verify Disk results, confusing.. Can they be the cause of system lock ups?

I have been experiencing strange freezes on my Mac Pro 2008 system.
My boot disk is a 50% full 128GB SSD from Crucial and is running beautifully fast however for the past couple of weeks my system often freezes for anything from 3 seconds to 30 seconds and then the Finder restarts.
After the Finder restarts everything continues running smoothly. As if nothing ever happend, no error reports, no apps crashed, nothing.
I have verified disk permissions and verified the disk itself in Disk Utility but I am not quite sure what these results mean and if they could be the cause of these random lock ups.
    here are the results:
    Verify permissions for “Boot Disk”
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.

The volume Boot Disk was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
I would really appreciate it if someone that knows their way around this stuff could help me troubleshoot this.
As for the problem of the system locking up it does not happen in the same application consistently.
Often it happens in Firefox but it could equally often happen when working in Photoshop, browsing files in the Finder or trying to access the Spotlight search via the keyboard shortcut.
When the system locks up I get the spinning beach ball and I can still move the mouse and click and even still access CMD+TAB app switcher, switch spaces and all those things, just applications become non responsive.
If you need any more details please let me know.
    Thanks for reading,
    Jannis

These are innocuous errors that you may safely ignore. However the disk error is a problem. Do the following:
    Repairing the Hard Drive
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Safari causing full-system hang

For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:
    05/10/2010 08:15:47 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari[242] ATS AutoActivation: Query timed out. (elapsed 5.0 seconds. params: queryString = {comapple_ats_namepostscript == "Helvetica-Neue" && kMDItemContentTypeTree != com.adobe.postscript-lwfn-font}, valueListAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5710 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01602c8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentType"}
    )}}, sortingAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5730 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa01603a8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentModificationDate"}
    )}}, scopeList = {<CFArray 0x6f5750 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
    0 : <CFString 0xa0161a98 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDQueryScopeComputer"}
(sometimes it names a font, sometimes the font name is "_")
I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:
    05/10/2010 08:25:06 kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.

A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
The second issue still eludes me.
    Things I have tried:
    Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
    Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple!

  • Non-Apple browsers cause cascading system hang with clean install of Lion

It started with Google Chrome.  After a few hours of use, Chrome would randomly lock up one renderer at a time until it was completely unresponsive.  Console showed nothing conclusive in the logs, and would soon lock up itself.  Logged-in Terminal windows could sometimes get as far as a "ps auxc", but would lock up during the command output, and new Terminal windows or tabs would never get past login.  The SSH daemon would be dead in the water, preventing me from logging in remotely.  Any existing SSH connections would hang on the first command.  Activity Monitor would lock up the moment I tried to sample a process or interact with anything.  Interacting with SystemUIServer (pulling down the menu for the clock or trying to do a Spotlight search) would cause SystemUIServer to hang.  Same with the Dock.  My mouse was like the Midas of software failure: everything I touched turned to hang.  Eventually I'd be staring at a spinning beachball.  After a few (five to ten) minutes, it might perform a couple queued events (opening a window, switching to another application) but would usually become wedged again immediately, forcing me to hard restart.
I then tried installing Firefox 5, and discovered that it causes the hang fairly reliably within the first ten seconds.  Since I knew when it was about to happen, I managed to capture a few stack traces in Activity Monitor, but it was always different, and always somewhere in the kernel (usually file-system related: __getattrlist while scanning fonts one time, the open system call another).
Safari, on the other hand, works great.
I've tried performing a verification of my startup disk, which returns no errors, so although I'm not ruling out hardware failure at this point the problem started immediately after I upgraded to Lion, and persisted even after I wiped my hard drive completely and performed a clean install from the recovery partition.  It also doesn't seem to be completely the fault of either Chrome or Firefox, since they're different browsers with different rendering engines using different system frameworks.  They do both perform a lot of file I/O, so maybe that's a clue.  Another possible lead is the seemingly random errors Console will spew out while the hang is occuring.  Most recently I've gotten a screenful of '--ImageKit Error: updateGLTextureWithBitmapData: glPixelStorei returned an error : 506 ...', and before that it was 'Google Chrome Helper: CGSLookupServerRootPort: Failed to look up the port for "com.apple.windowserver.active" (1100)', "kernel: IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero".  Console spew being what it is, though, I don't know if any of that is relevant.
I figure I would be seeing quite a lot of angry forum threads if Chrome and Firefox were completely unusable on other people's machines, so I'm guessing there's something specific to my configuration happening here.  With a clean install, though, I'm not sure what it could be.  Here are detailed system specs:
24" iMac (Early 2008 -- just out of AppleCare coverage, figures) , 2.8 GHz, 2GB RAM, running Lion build 11A511 (which should be the 10.7 release version).
I would be massively indebted to anyone who has experienced or heard about this issue before and can give me something else to try.

Zeroing the disk serves no purpose in this situation.  It is a common misconception that this is required to map out bad blocks on the drive, but the fact is that 1) modern hard drives map out bad blocks as part of everyday operation, and 2) zeroing the drive involves simply writing zeros with no checks to see if the zero was written successfully, so it wouldn't know if a block was bad anyway.
It's possible the drive is starting to go bad, although then there should be some problems with SL as well.  I would recommend repartitioning the drive with Disk Utility.  Make sure it's got one partition, using the GUID partition map scheme, and format that partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Repartitioning should get rid of any gremlins lurking on the disk, unless the physical disk itself is dying.  And after repartitioning, install straight from the flash drive, as Shootist recommends, rather than installing SL first.
Hardware could be an issue.  It's entirely possible for an older system to work fine on slightly faulty hardware while a newer system does not.  Running Apple Hardware Test wouldn't be a bad idea.
Firmware updates wouldn't be a bad idea.  However, note that my mid-2010 MBP with the same specs is running Lion just fine, and I've never installed any firmware updates.  (Firmware updates scare me...  if my machine is running just fine, I'm reluctant to risk installing new firmware.  But that's probably just a bit of paranoia talking.  )

  • What's causing email transfer disruption network error?

I would appreciate help in troubleshooting and solving my problem of which the email transfer disruption network error is only one of the problems.
I'm using Mozilla Firefox rather than Microsoft Explorer with Ixquick as my default Internet search engine. I have Juno as my email provider. I have the same features on a laptop via WiFi and my workstation.
We have a new modem, and have had problems since the installation of the new modem.
With each attempt to transfer my email, there is the following Mail Transfer Error message: "There were errors encountered during mail transmission. Mail transfer was disrupted by a network error."
In searching the Internet using Ixquick, I encounter the following message(s):
    "Unable to connect"
"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at support.moxilla.org."
"The site could not be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments."
"If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection."
"If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."
    "Try Again"
Thank you for your time and efforts with this matter.
    Take care,
    Margo

When you look at the address in the address bar, does it seem to match up with the email?
Sounds like Firefox sent the server something it wasn't expecting. Sometimes this can be caused by obsolete or corrupted cookies -- assuming you have visited the site before. It also might be caused by modifications to standard information sent to servers such as the "user agent" string that specifies your browser version and OS.
To clear a site's cookies, while viewing a page on the site, either:
right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
(menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • GPU Acceleration in Chromium causes heavy system load

I experience a heavy system load (especially if I'm watching videos or listening to music on soundcloud) if I use the hardware acceleration feature in Chromium.
I use the standard linux kernel(not the lts one) and the drivers from the nvidia-package. I got a Nvidia GeForce GT 525M GPU.
If I deactivate the hardware acceleration feature in chromium, it doesn't need so much system resources, but maybe there are more factors which cause the heavy system load.
I'd like to be able to activate the feature, because otherwise I can't scroll through webpages smoothly.
The same thing happens if I use the google-chrome package from the AUR.
Has somebody experienced the same problem and/or has ideas how to solve it?

Isn't HW acceleration disabled by default on Linux? AFAIR it always had a lot of problems.

  • Software updates cause network system prefs pane lockup

Some problems today after Software Updates on eMac G4 running Tiger 10.4.11. The recent updates have been the all the latest IWork and iLife app updates, including QT 7.6, iTunes 8.2.1 and Security Update 2009-004.
Whenever I try to get into the Network screen of system preferences I keep getting a drop down box that says "your network settings have been changed by another application." I have to click on okay and the box just keeps dropping down. I can't get into change the settings and every time I click on okay this message shows up in the console.log -
    WirelessAttach: getInterfaceWithName failed
The airport card is installed but software is always turned off because I don't use WiFi. I noticed the same message when I turned on the Firewall for all network options including checking the boxes for the advanced UDF blocking, system logging and stealth options since none of them slowed my computer down on kept me from doing anything I normally do on the Internet.
I've been using software update over the last few days to get the latest PPC updates on Mac 10.4.11 and something in them could be causing the problem. I avoided updating for months because everything was working well and the latest updates are primed for Intel machines running Leopard.
This is the first time I've updated any Mac and started having problems like I used to have on PCs when I made changes. Should have gone with my gut feeling and stayed with the older PPC stable software on the older machine. Unless I can figure out what is causing the problem, I'm just going to uninstall what I can and re-install my old PPC stable versions. Something in the mix is causing the problem.

To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

You have at least partial installations of "MacKeeper" and "Norton Anti-Virus," which are both useless and harmful. You also have quite a few other third-party system modifications that might be useful but could also be harmful, especially if incomplete or outdated. Besides that, many files in your home folder have wrong permissions or are locked.
    A.
This procedure will unlock all your user files, reset their ownership, and remove their access-control lists. If you've set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    B.
The system is so heavily modified with third-party software that, instead of trying to remove the modifications piecemeal, you should erase the startup volume, reinstall OS X, and then go through the initial setup process, restoring only user data and settings from a backup — not applications or other files. This procedure will be easier than trying to clean up a messy system.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog — not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
    After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
I strongly recommend that you never reinstall commercial "anti-virus" products or "utilities," nor any software that changes the user interface or modifies the functions of built-in applications. If you do that, the problem is likely to recur.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.

  • Tablespace: PSAPTEMP # Tablespace files autoextend can cause file system overflow

    Hi All,
We are seeing the above message after updating the kernel from 701 SP 125 to 720 SP 600.
I have checked the data files that make up PSAPTEMP and none are set to auto extend so I am confused as to what it is complaining about.

Any ideas how to resolve this or is it a bug?
    Thanks
    Craig

    Hi Craig,
Deactivating the alert could be the latest solution, but you should first check how the tempfiles are setup. If they are set as sparse files they might not use all the allocated space at FS level, but might grow up to it and cause an overflow...
To deactivate that behavior you should copy temp files with a specific cp option (--sparse=never) to deactivate the sparse attribute as explained in the here under notes (the 2nd one is for 11g only thus not valid for you).
    Regards
548221 - Temporary Files are created as sparse files
Oracle creates files of temporary tablespaces as sparse files.
'Sparse' is a special property a file in Unix operating systems can have. Sparse files are files that can dynamically grow and shrink depending on their content. So many sparse files can use a common pool of free disk space. Also the creation of a sparse file is much faster than creation of a normal file.
Problems can occur if sparse files on the same disk grow in parallel and there is not sufficient free disk space for all to extend.
Usage of sparse files is not a bug. Therefore there is no possibility to tell Oracle not to use sparse files for the temporary tablespace if the operating system offers sparse file functionality.
1864212 - Forcing complete space allocation for temp files
By default, temp files are not initialized when the file is created and therefore the disk space is not pre-allocated in the file system.

  • Connecting iPod causes major system slowdown

I bought the iPod a week ago, and this behaviour has been consistent from the first time I plugged it into the Windows XP SP2 computer. When the iPod is plugged in, the service "iPodService.exe" starts up and then the entire computer grinds to a halt. I've looked at the Task Manager and noticed that both "iPodService.exe" and "Services.exe" are tying up all available resources. If I choose "iPodService.exe" and end the process, "Services.exe" immediately drops to 0% and the system goes back to a normal level of functioning and responsivness. Ending iTunes doesn't seem to cause "iPodService.exe" to release, which is why I had to force the ending of that process.
Any suggestions are really welcome. I don't think that I should be having to go through this everytime I want to update/charge the iPod.
      Windows XP

    Hi,
Try to restore your iPod to the factory setting with iTunes 7, if does not work, likely there may be some problems on your OS. And you may need to reinstall the XP on your PC again.
But before doing these, please try to connect your iPod with other PC, see if it causes the same problem
